Support the fight against childhood cancer #Duckprints #CleverGirls

This holiday season, Aflac reminds us to be thankful for our health, our loved ones, and to give back. Aflac’s Duckprints program is an ongoing celebration of the unsung heroes in the fight against childhood cancer, and continues their mission to help eradicate the disease through raising donations and awareness. Chances are, you know someone or have heard of someone who has a child that is/was/has been diagnosed with cancer in childhood.  I know we do.

My friend Kelly lost her daughter Jamie at 5 1/2 months. Jamie was almost exactly 2 weeks older than my youngest daughter. Both were bald with blonde fuzz and blue eyes. Kelly was a moms club friend, and watching her parent an infant with cancer and being her friend was an experience that changed me. It changed everyone around us. We always give and support Jamie’s Run in Jamie’s memory, but also in memory of so many other kids (including one we’ve written about, Abby, who has also left a mark on my heart).   abby and american girl   In 2014, it is estimated that 15,780 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 years will be diagnosed with cancer. That’s a huge number. Too high. Aflac is committed to the fight against childhood cancer, and has raised more than $93 million with the goal of reaching $100 million by the end of 2015.  Aflac is also giving their Duckprints award to those who’ve left their mark on fighting childhood cancer, by helping at events, fundraisers, on social media, etc.  The idea is to generate interest and excitement that will hopefully result in more donations and more awareness to help fight childhood cancer. aflac 2014 All of the net proceeds from Duckprints merchandise – like the annual Holiday Duck, which is available at participating Macy’s or at aflacduckprints.com – go to hospitals treating childhood cancer in the U.S.  Aflac will also give an additional $2 to the Aflac Cancer Center for every post, share, tweet, or re-tweet that uses the #Duckprints hashtag on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. (You can click on the link below to retweet and support the cause yourself!)

Austin Freeman Bio

austinfreeman1

Austin Freeman was born on April 20, 2003. Shortly after his tenth birthday he hurt his back and went to the doctor with persistent pain. The doctor took x-rays and thought it was likely a bruise from a fall he had taken. Austin then told the doctor that he had been experiencing pain in his groin area as well. The doctor initially attributed it to the fall and Austin started to head home with his mom.. Before leaving the parking lot, the cell phone rang. It was the nurse, saying the doctor didn’t feel comfortable not giving a full examination of the groin area. They went back in, did x-rays and discovered the mass, which unfortunately was diagnosed as Ewing Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer.

austinfreeman2

Austin was treated at the Aflac Cancer Center in Atlanta Georgia, where he received numerous doses of chemotherapy and radiation. Thankfully, after a very difficult year, Austin has been cancer free since March of 2014.

We need more stories like Austin’s.  More happy endings, more successes.  In order to do that, we have to continue to fight childhood cancer, and also to spread the word to bring awareness- and financial support to the research. It’s not just Austin, nor Jamie, nor Abby. It’s all the kids who’ve fought, who are fighting, and those who will begin their battle down the road.

Won’t you join the fight and use the #Duckprints hashtag on social media? Or make a purchase of one of the adorable and quirky Aflac holiday ducks?

Shop Kmart & Support St Jude

When the unthinkable happens and your child is ill, gravely ill, it’s devastating.  This little being who you love more than yourself is sick and you want to just be with them, taking care of them, advocating for them, spending time with them. For many families, this can’t always happen.  Why?  In a word? Money. Most families don’t have the financial resources available to cover the costs of a long term illness, including lodging, food and other treatment costs. Unless they go to St. Jude. Did you know that no family ever receives a bill from St. Jude? Not only are all of the medical costs associated with treatment covered, the family also receives free food and lodging, so the only thing mom and dad have to focus on is their child. Having had friends who’ve traveled down the road of supporting a family with a child ill, I’ve watched how hard the financial piece makes everything, and it’s just so unfair.  Things are already unfair when you have a sick child. St. Jude takes a huge burden off of families.

This holiday season, and every season, it’s a time to be thankful for those who are healthy in our life and give to those who are not. We do what we can here in our family to help others who may not be so fortunate, which we do year round, but try to do extra at the holidays.  Little things like seeking out stores and businesses who support those who are living the unthinkable. Take Kmart, for example.  Kmart toy shoppers have another way to give back to the St. Jude Thanks and Giving® campaign this holiday season.

St Jude

Between December 7th and December 13th, Kmart will donate $1 to St. Jude for every Fab 15 toy purchased, up to a maximum donation of $25,000. Kmart is already the all-time leading St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® fundraising partner. Pretty cool, huh?

So one Fab 15 toy that’s on so many wish lists gets purchased, and $1 goes to St. Jude.  If you are going to buy those toys anyway, why not head to where you can also do some good at the same time?

Chocolate Chip Cookie Jar Mix

This post brought to you by BIC®. The content and opinions expressed below are that of this mama loves.

We love to make things to give as gifts, or with purchased gifts.  Edible gifts are fun to make- we’ve made many this year, including jars of soup mix for the Hawkwing organization. Yesterday we made Chocolate Chip Cookie Jar Mix at Sunday School with the kids, but I wanted to give them a little something extra before we package them for gifting.  Using some fun marker colors and cardstock, I made some adorable (and free) printable recipe card templates that can double as bookmarks!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Jar Mix

 chocolate-chip-cookies-jar

Ingredients

For Jars:

Quart canning jars

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cups (9 ounces) Chocolate Chips

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

Mix salt, flour and baking soda together, add in jar first.  Next, add your brown sugar.  Follow that with the granulated sugar.  Add your chocolate chips. Be SURE to press down between layers- otherwise your ingredients won’t all fit!

For baking:

3/4 cup softened butter (1 1/2 sticks)

1 large egg 3/4 tsp vanilla

Directions

Preheat oven to 375

Beat 3/4 c softened butter, 1 large egg and 3/4 tsp vanilla until blended.

Add cookie mix and (optional) 1/2 c chopped nuts- mix well, breaking up any clumps.

Drop by rounded spoonful onto ungreased cookie sheet

Bake 9-11 min

Cool on baking racks

I am pretty happy with how these turned out.  I have this thing about handwritten recipes- notes in cookbooks, scraps of paper with notes- I treasure them all.  With technology being such a prevalent part of our lives, I fear that we will lose those little notes- and that’s sad.  I take special care of anything that’s been written by my mom, my gramas, really, anyone. It makes my heart happy to see my mom’s writing, and gramas, when I’m making a recipe they used to make.  That’s why I opted to make labels for these jars by hand, and not with the computer. It’s not perfectly neat, but it’s real, and it’s my writing.  One day, my kids might want to remember the way I wrote! cookies-jar-label

What will you be Merry Marking with BIC Mark-It™ permanent markers this holiday season? I challenge Amanda, Ashley and Jenni to join me in the Merry Marking!

4 reasons to try Jamberry Nails #Giveaway)

I’ve been hearing about Jamberry Nails for a long time, but hadn’t tried them until my friend Shaun was all “Brett you NEED to try them!!” and so I did. Finally.  Or I tried them on the girls. I haven’t done mine yet, although I promised the girls I would do Christmas themed nails to match them in a few weeks.  Now that we’ve tried them, we love them!

4 Reasons to try Jamberry Nails

jamberry-holiday-nails

See the pointer finger? That will pop right off, because the Jamberry isn’t trimmed properly.

1. Trendy and fun

We love to do holiday and seasonal things around here.  We always have fun shirts and/or pajamas to go with holidays.  Home decor too.  I’ve made many attempts through the years to do fun and festive nails for myself and/or the girls and let’s just say I have no future as a nail artist. BUT, with the Jamberry, we can do trendy and fun nails in about the same time polish would take… it just stays on a whole lot longer.  Bonus? My house doesn’t smell like nail polish.

jamberry-turkeys

Honestly, I’m pretty conservative with clothing and accessories.  My toenails are where I have a little more fun! I actually love these wrap designs so much I did the StyleBox by Jamberry for 3 months to stock up!

2. Non toxic

This is HUGE to me.  My kids love having their nails painted. I love having my toes painted. What I don’t love is what’s in most nail polishes… and the non toxic ones we’ve tried seem to chip or peel off almost immediately. I don’t like the idea of applying something that will just sit on our body that’s filled with chemicals. The Jamberry wraps, we can put a Jamberry on and we’re good for a week… probably longer but we have been changing them for a new look after a week).  Nothing toxic sitting on my nails or the girls.

3. Junior Line

I love the Jamberry Junior Line.  Little Jamberries for littler nails.  Very fun, just like the regular sized wraps, but better suited for their nail sizes. I hope that they decide to make the fun sports themed wraps in Junior sizes so my little gymnasts and soccer monkeys can have their fave sports on their nails.  The patterns and prints are so much fun to mix and match things up!! Kids get to be trendy and have a little flair too!

jamberry-turkey-chevron

4. No damage

I used to do tips on my nails.  A lifetime ago, but I loved how they looked. I hated having to maintain them, get fills, etc., and no matter what I did I always had damage when I took them off. With wraps, there isn’t damage at all!

jamberry-nails-prizepack

One reader will win a Jamberry Nails prize pack that includes 1 package of wraps (winner’s choice, based on availability) plus a mini applicator set. ARV $27.50

Thanks to Shaun for introducing me to Jamberry!!

What does independence mean to you?

What does independence mean to you?

For different people, it can mean many different things. For some, it’s the ability to do what you what to do, when you want to do it (namely my children). For others, it could be financial independence. Being able to have your own money and support yourself without the assistance of someone else.

For the company Pure Energies, the word independence holds an entirely different meaning. For them, it means giving homeowners the ability to control their own energy bill and make their own choices. Here in America, we have gotten quite wrapped up in the concept of paying a utility bill each month to a company that decides rates, measures our use, and bills us on the sum of these things. Pure Energies, however, is introducing a different option entirely. This post is brought to you by our friends at Pure Energies. Opinions are my own.

katapo

They are allowing homeowners to option of generating and directly using their own power! This is truly a lesson is self sufficiency and independence. In order to teach this lesson to the best of their ability, however, they’ve decided to take some notes from some of the people who do this best… the Kayapo.

kayapo fish

The Kayapo is an indigenous tribe located in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest. Led by the International Conservation Fund of Canada, the CEO of Pure Energies will be taking a small team to live alongside this tribe for two weeks! They will be participating in the tribe’s traditions, and exploring the Amazon.

The purpose of this trip?

kayapo iphone

To learn and exemplify what it means to be sustainable and independent, through the eyes of the Kayapo people. These people effectively protect an area of the rainforest bigger than more than half the countries in the world from threats of loggers, ranchers, and miners. The area the Kayapo protect is equal to the size of the state of Virgina!

The lessons of the Kayapo women, men, and children will go a very long ways in teaching the world the meaning of independence. I can’t wait to see the footage and photographs the team brings upon their return! Follow their journey to discover independence, courage and freedom here.
