So many times: I Wish I had a Wet Ones

Baby Shower on a Budget

Throwing a baby shower doesn’t have to mean big bucks spent. You really need 3 main components: food, atmosphere and guests (friends and family). Once you have those main components and a willing guest of honor, you’re good to go. Well, maybe not that simple. Chances are, you have a budget of some sort for the food and decorations. Perhaps you’re going to an outside venue for the event.  Regardless of your budget, you don’t have to spend big to make a nice spread. Full disclosure: this isn’t a table spread from a shower. It’s a mockup with real food that I shared with some friends.  We all agreed it was yummy.  Our friends at Chex inspired me to write about how to throw a baby shower on a budget.

Throwing a Baby Shower on a Budget

Kiss It.  Keep it Simple, Silly!

Don’t over complicate things.  A simple menu with a few of the expectant mom’s favorites will be just the thing.

You don’t need to go all out on decor.

I promise.  Put down the $42 centerpieces.  Get a simple bouquet if you want something special that she can bring home with her! You can spend a small fortune on decor and really, a few simple things can make just as big of an impact.

Use what you have.

Sure, you can get a super cute baby-themed tiered serving piece, but will you use it again?  Wouldn’t you rather use that money on a gift the mom to be can use, or on yummy food?  Find a serving piece you already have- or ask a friend to borrow theirs.  That white tablecloth you usually pull out for Thanksgiving?  Use that with some fun colors instead of buying a whole new set.

Limit menu choices.

I’m totally serious. Make sure you have enough of everything, but simple works really well.  Some snacks, something a little more substantial (with protein), something sweet, and beverages.  Done.  You don’t need to recreate a whole restaurant menu.  I mean, you can, but when we’re talking about budgets…

For something sweet, everyone loves Muddy Buddies.  Why not make some fun baby girl or baby boy themed Muddy Buddies (aka Puppy Chow), served in cupcake wrappers?  Simple, inexpensive, DELICIOUS, and, as a bonus, they look adorable on the table. The cupcake wrappers also double as portion control, unless your guests have a super sweet tooth and go back for seconds (thirds).

This recipe is mine, but it’s most definitely adapted from the folks at Chex Mix. ChexPartyMix-RecipeCards-ItsAGirl-print and ChexPartyMix-RecipeCards-ItsABoy-print if you’d like to see the original inspiration (or use for you!)

Ingredients

1 bag melting chocolate

3 cups confectioners sugar

1 box (gluten free) Chex Cereal – about 9 cups- any flavor works. I try to grab the gluten free when I’m able to just so I am sure that I can tell people there’s no gluten in my muddy buddies. (I used corn flavor this time)

Sixlets in whatever color you want to use- to coordinate with the baby’s nursery theme, for boy/girl, for fun- they have so many to choose from! (2 cups total)

Large plastic (sealable!) storage bag (gallon sized)

Large microwave save mixing bowl (or double boiler)

Fun cupcake wrappers

Edible glitter, colorful shots/sprinkles/jimmies

baby-shower-muddy-buddies-ingredients

Directions

Melt chocolate in double boiler on stovetop, or at 20 second intervals in the microwave

While chocolate is melting, add your confectioner’s sugar to the storage bag. Set aside.

Once your chocolate is melted, stir in your Chex cereal.  Honestly, the most effective way I have found to coat the cereal evenly is to mix by hand.  You don’t want a lot of cereal breakage while you coat. It’s easier to gauge the pressure you are using by hand than by spoon.

After your cereal is coated, add half of it to the storage bag with the sugar, seal it and gently shake the bag to evenly coat.  Once you have the cereal evenly coated, remove from your bag and set on cookie sheet (you can also put it into your colander to remove excess sugar). Repeat with remainder of coated cereal.

Once your cereal has been coated with chocolate and then the powdered sugar, add your Sixlets (or other colored candies) and gently mix.

Homemade Cheez-Its

This Mama Loves Kids in the Kitchen as much as they love being in there! My kids beg for snacks all day long and while I don’t mind tossing them the occassional packaged bag of cookies or chips I prefer that the majority of their snacks be healthier- these homemade Cheez-its are made with much healthier ingredients than processes snacks and the kids love them (so does the hubby!).  They are simple and fun to make as well so I thought I should definitely include them in the Kids in The Kitchen series for you to try with your little ones as well. They get to measure, mix, roll, slice, and bake their way to healthy and tasty treats.  Experiment with some seasonings in your kitchen if you are feeling adventurous to give them various flavors- a dash of hot sauce,  or basil and oregano.homemade-cheezits-crackers

4 Reasons to get Surface 3 for Students

I was talking to a friend recently about what it was like when we were in high school. If we had to write a paper that required us to research a subject, we had to dig through a stack of books in the library. If you had to type up said report, you had to go to the typing lab and use an old typewriter… maybe if you were lucky ,a word processor! Lord forbid if you made a mistake! You had to get the whiteout and try and cover up your error! Kids these days! They sure do have it easy! If I had a Surface 3 from Microsoft, things would have been so much easier! Here are a few good reasons to get the Surface 3 for students!Tracking Pixel This post was inspired by the awesomeness of the new Surface 3, and sponsored by our friends at The Microsoft Store, but opinions are my own.

4-reasons-surface-students

Size and Weight: The Surface 3 weighs in at a mere 1.37 pounds and is just 10.51 x 7.36 x 0.34 inches. It just the right size to slip under your arm or in your backpack and take to class. With 10 hours of battery life and a three-position kickstand, Surface 3 is perfect for taking notes, recording a lecture or getting some work done in between classes while you soak up some sun! (Yes, that says 10 hours. These stay charged a really long time!)

surface3 10 hours

Support: I always get nervous when I buy a piece of technology because you never know what the support team is like. With the experienced team at the Microsoft Store, you get the best choice, value and service, including an Answer Desk to make to make sure you are up-and-running and get the most out of your technology. Once the Surface 3 is available, The Microsoft Store will host Surface 3 workshops the week following to show customers who purchased the device how to get the most from the Surface 3.

Availability: You can visit any of the 111 Microsoft Store locations in the U.S. and Canada or go online at microsoftstore.com and pre-order the Surface 3 now, which will be available on May 5th for just under $500. If you choose to buy in-store, there will be a Microsoft fiesta for students starting at 4pm. Stores will host a Cinco de Mayo inspired fiesta-themed celebration. Stores will offer Surface-branded swag and other prizes, as well as provide a 10% discount to students. The Microsoft Store is the best place to experience and pre-order the latest addition to the Surface family

surface3

Features: The Surface 3, is the best of both worlds because it is a tablet that works like a laptop and it comes with the full Windows experience (with a free upgrade to Windows 10 when it’s available.) The Surface 3 has a beautiful screen, integrated kickstand and stereo speakers with Dolby® Audio-enhanced sound, offering hands-free entertainment wherever you go. Whether you are home or on the move, you get the Surface 3 Docking Station. You can run your favorite apps and desktop software side-by-side. The Surface 3 also comes with a one-year Office 365 Personal subscription as well as OneDrive storage. I love the Surface Pen because you can take notes with ease, draw and create. You can also mark presentations, PDF files, term papers and you can even convert handwritten notes to text in OneNote.

Don’t you want a Surface 3 now? I know, right?! Pre-order yours now as well as see a fully detailed listing of the Surface 3 features at microsoftstore.com!

Be prepared for surprises no matter where you are!

After a winter hiatus, I’m back to doing the Couch 2 5k program.  I’m plugging along, at my “perky walk” pace, but in my mind, plugging along counts regardless of how fast you are.  I may never meet my awesome cousin’s running pace, but I’m totally ok with that.  I have to be honest though, one thing that happens to me so often, and to so many others (many of whom have also been pregnant), is a little leakage while exercising.  That doesn’t make for comfort while running/jogging/walking/perkywalking/exercising/moving/sitting. It’s embarassing, totally annoying, but you know what? It happens to a LOT of us.  I’m just one of the few who will speak to it. Part of being active is being prepared for what may happen- no matter where you are… or what you are doing! Some things, we cannot plan for. But some? You totally can! This post is brought to you by our friends at Depend, opinions are my own.  I am participating in a Vibrant Influencer network campaign for the Depend brand. I am receiving a fee for posting; however, the opinions expressed in this post are my own. I am in no way affiliated with Depend and do not earn a commission or percent of sales.

be-prepared-for-surprises

Monday of this week, I was in Boston and standing at mile 24 of the Boston Marathon.  Like in the rain, freezing, cheering on runners, right there in the moment.  As I cheered these amazing athletes on, it struck me over and over, that they have been running for a few hours and what would that be like if you have to pee or if you have a little leakage?  The discomfort that must create! Do you stop? Do you keep going? Does it matter? (Note here: I’ve been doing some searches online, and it seems some folks do stop to get a bit of relief. Others refuse to…and deal with the consequence).

Over 51 million American women experience bladder leakage. That’s 1 in 3 American women*.

  • There are many common causes of bladder leakage in women including pregnancy, childbirth and even diabetes.

To support the over 51 million women who experience bladder leakage, the Depend brand is introducing Depend Silhouette Active Fit briefs, a new moderate-absorbency brief that features a thin design for complete comfort with the trusted protection of the Depend brand and a lower rise+for an underwear-like look, fit and feel.

depend silhouette

The Depend brand is also entering year two of Underwareness, a social movement and charitable cause to break down the bladder leakage stigma. As part of  Underwareness, the Depend brand is:

Encouraging people to show their support for women with bladder leakage. For every photo and video shared using #Underwareness, the Depend brand will donate $1, up to $3 million, through 2016 to fund charities that advance the research and education of bladder leakage.

Join the movement and request a free sample of Depend Silhouette Active Fit briefs at www.Underwareness.com. Together, we can show that wearing a different kind of underwear is no big deal.

In year two of Underwareness, the brand’s social movement and charitable cause to break down the bladder leakage stigma, Depend is joining forces with CVS Health to support women with bladder leakage as they navigate their path to better health.

o   Visit www.cvs.com/depend to learn more about Depend Silhouette Active Fit. To join the Underwareness movement, go to www.underwearness.com.

Here’s some video footage (with a few minor comments from me)- I can’t imagine stopping so far into a 26.2 mile run.  I have to wonder how many runners might be wearing some kind of product (like Depend Silhouette Active Fit) that can help to absorb a little leakage. I think I might be one of them!

Are you a runner? Do you have leakage issues as well? How do you deal with them?

Sponsored Video: Country Crock – #WhenWeBake #Giveaway

The Country Crock® “So Much Good Happens When We Bake” campaign celebrates family togetherness in the kitchen and around the dinner table. We actually do a lot of baking as a family- every Saturday morning, we make pancakes “from scrap” as the kids say. The kids love to bake- breads, biscuits, cookies, muffins, cakes… they love helping and they love creating.  We consider ourselves pretty lucky that they do enjoy being part of the cooking and baking process- and it truly is a wonderful way to bond and connect with one another. Time spent in the kitchen is more about than just making cookies (or anything), it’s about the time we get as a family and the values we can share – such as patience, togetherness and sharing. These are values inherent to the Country Crock® brand.

3d-printed-cookie-cutter-kids-drawing

One of the best things we’ve ever been blessed to receive since I started this blog was this bunny head cookie cutter.  It may look like just a cookie cutter to you, but our friends at Country Crock sent a bunny drawing my 5 year old did off to a 3d printer and included this amazing little cookie cutter from her drawing.  I can’t even tell you how much I want to make these for friends and family with kids’ artwork.  Not even just my own.  Her little face when she saw that cutter was simply amazing.

She is over the moon.  When I was away for work this weekend, my husband sent me this photo of her cookie creations with her cutter!

Country Crock® knows so much good happens when families bake together, and that’s why they brought a unique, family-fun opportunity to the NYC Tri-State area to surprise moms just in time for Mother’s Day with special cookie cutters created by their special kitchen helpers … their kids! The cookie cutters were created on-site by a 3-D printer, and inspired by the drawings kids created while at the store. The families were able to take their one-of-a-kind cookie cutter home to create even more special memories together.(http://www.unileversweepsrules.com/countrycrockbaking)

With the help of a friendly grocery store, Country Crock was able to share with unsuspecting families the good that happens, when we bake. All that was needed were a few colored pencils, the modern magic of a 3D printer, and the reminder that watching a child’s imagination come to life is one of the special joys of baking together. Don’t miss the original film in the #WhenWeBake series at WhenWeBake.com.

Being a prepared mom #MomsFirst

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Pampers. All opinions are 100% mine.

When I was an expectant mom for the first time, I read anything and everything. I joined forums. I educated myself (ad nauseum). I was prepared

Then the baby was actually outside of my body and I realized, I wasn’t prepared. Not at all.  Even the moment I heard that first sound she made- I wasn’t at all prepared for the depth of love that came simply because she existed. I’d already loved her every moment she was inside of me, but that love grew instantly as I heard her first sounds, saw her for the first time…there’s nothing that can prepare you for that.  When you watch the videos- I noticed Morgan said the same thing.  It’s just amazing. Hearing a new mom share that sentiment and seeing how powerful her reaction was, it brought me right back to those early moments.

Being a first time Mom can be both exciting and nerve-racking. The uncertain and anxious emotions are something every expecting mother encounters. Visit Walmart online and listen to stories, tips and advice from first time moms, experienced moms and expecting moms.

Walmart is hosting a web series, brought to you by Pampers Swaddlers, called #MomsFirst. It is an easy place to find helpful hints, great products and personal stories from moms like you. Do you have questions about traveling with your baby, bonding with your new baby or what products are best for your little one? Every mom has questions, regardless if it’s your first or fifth baby, and those can be answered here. It is always nice to have help with great information in one place especially when it’s designed specifically for moms, so experience what that’s like with Pampers Swaddler’s Moms First series at Walmart online.

I related most with Erin, the experienced mom, probably because of where I am in life. I’m past the baby/toddler diaper stages, but really, so much of the experiences are the same.  Juggling schedules, wondering how this affects one kid while doing something with another…

..will being at sisters’ gymnastics classes and practices every week be a bad thing for him?

will being at brother’s swim meets and practices so often be a bad thing for her?

… it’s reassuring to know that so many other moms are feeling those things.  The happy, the sad, the questions, the answers, the worries, more. No matter if you are a newly expectant mom, or a veteran mom… chances are, someone somewhere has had the same feelings you have. Like Brittany said, you’re never going to be perfect (let’s all repeat that, because we won’t, and shouldn’t strive for perfection, because we’re human!), just do the best you can!

Find great Pampers deals at Walmart.com! That’s what our hospital used, and what so many moms have trusted for their babies’ diapers through the years. We still keep Pampers wipes around even without anyone in diapers- you just never know when someone will have a spill or an incident…they are one of the things we always have on hand!  See? I’m still prepared.

I’ll just never be prepared.  With kids, things happen. Kids change. We change. Circumstances change.  We just need to do the best we can.

The Game of Life Game Inspires Career Choices in Kids

When I was a kid, one of my favorite times was family game night. I looked forward to the laughter and the good-natured competition. We would pit the boys against the girls or the adults versus the kids. Among the classic board games we played was The Game of Life game. I remember taking so long to choose if I wanted a boy and a girl baby or twin girls or twin boys that the family would tease me! Well, that tradition carries on in many families, and has done so for more than fifty years.Tracking Pixel Fast forward to modern day, and my own family carries on the family game night tradition, together, and we were recently given the opportunity to partner with Hasbro to give the newest, modern update to The Game of Life game a review. The family agrees that this game is STILL awesome and we love it!

the-game-of-life-midgame

The Game of Life Game: My Dream Job

Now the latest generation of kids and their families can enjoy a new version of the classic game: The Game of Life game. I love that this game includes career cards that were inspired by kids, just like yours and mine! Among the career cards are Video Game Designer (which was the top pick among the kids polled) and Professional Athlete, which my son  is super interested in. My older daughter wants to be a Chef or a Fashion Designer.

the-game-of-life-career-cards

What is really nice is these cards are a gateway to opening conversations with your kids about what they want to be when they grow up. In addition to the careers my kids liked are: Singer, Secret Agent, Veterinarian, Teacher, Doctor, Scientist, Lawyer, Inventor, Race Car Driver, Dancer, Police Officer, and Firefighter.

the-game-of-life-new-careers

So, for instance, with my oldest, we were able to learn she has a passion for learning to cook and serve healthy and yummy food. She may want to open her own restaurant one day and be a head chef. My husband and I may consider enrolling her in cooking classes to let her follow that desire and see if it is a good fit for her. Can you imagine bearing able to learn at a younger age what your kids may want to choose for their career path as an adult? Imagine what a game changer this will be when deciding on college courses to take or job to apply for when your kid are old enough. I think it is just genius! Games have always been a great way to bring families together and the new career cards in The Game of Life game can help inspire those parent-kid conversations about what they want to be when they grow-up in a playful, casual way.

the-game-of-life-play

Another great opportunity to start the conversation is “Take Your Sons and Daughters to work day” on April 23 and introduce them to what you do at work. These conversations can lead to job-shadowing opportunities, involvement in clubs or organizations that cater to their interests like a cooking class or baseball lessons, and eventually the pursuit of a higher-education degree in the topic somewhere down the road.

Game-of-Life-logo

You can find The Game of Life game where games are sold for $19.99. It’s great for ages 8+, 2-4 players.  When we have had 5 people wanting to play, we choose 1 person for the banker and giver of the cards!

Where to Camp in Alaska

Alaska has an amazing network of camping options for the outdoor enthusiast. Whether you are tent camping or RVing it through this incredibly beautiful state, Alaska’s campground don’t disappoint. Alaska is an ideal location for campers, as they tend to have camping options right on the water or in the middle of a forest. Most campgrounds have electrical, water, and dump stations as well as showers and covered kitchen areas. You might be trying to decide where to camp in Alaska, and here are a few great ideas to help you decide.

Alaska Highways

All along each Alaskan Highway are numerous places to pull off and camp. Quite a few areas are free and require no reservations. Many of the roads that lead to glaciers cross through both state and federal land. They will have places to pull over and set up camp for a couple days. They want you to enjoy the area and see what Alaska is about. A couple of great places can be found along the Sterling Highway towards Homer where you can park next to the infamous Kenai River where fishermen are trying to snag salmon in the summer months. When traveling on the AlCan, there are campgrounds about every 45 miles. Always check with The Milepost to see which ones are open at what time of the season. With Alaska’s harsh winters, some campgrounds are not open year round.

Seward and Homer, Alaska

Seward is down Highway 1 and overlooks Resurrection Bay. All along the bay are numerous campgrounds. You can salmon fish right from the shore and have beachfront views from your RV or tent. There is a specific area for tent only campers, but if you wanted a site with water and electric, you could get it. Most of these are not on a reservation system, but rather first-come first-served. If you head two miles south of Seward to Lowell Point, you can camp at Miller’s Landing where they do take reservations and can sometimes be found on Groupon. In Homer, you can camp right on the spit in the bay. It is very windy here but the views are nothing short of spectacular!

Denali National Park

North of Anchorage is Denali National Park, home of Mount McKinley the highest mountain on the North American continent. You can camp there at federal campgrounds that charge less than $15 per day to camp. You can bring your RV or tent camp at Denali.
