>BOBA Organic Baby Carrier

I wear my kids.  Well, not so much my 5 year old, because honestly, I’m too short to ‘wear her’ (she’s within the weight limit of the carrier and her dad has put her in just to see if it is possible!!) but I do wear my 18 month old and  my 3 year old.  In the same carrier.  How is that even possible?   Right now, its thanks to the Boba baby carrier.  I wear my 3 year old on my back and usually wear the baby on my front although she’s starting to be ok with being on my back.  Having her on my back is often how you’ll find me cooking dinner at all, because that’s the witching hour, and the only way I can keep her happy and me sane!!

Boba is a Soft Structured baby carrier (SSC) that is intended for children between 15 to 45 lbs. Boba has a few extra inches of height to keep your center of gravity closer to your body and support your little one’s back. The innovative thing about the Boba carrier is that there are foot straps attached to the waist belt for the child’s feet to sit in enabling a healthy sitting position for the child. The footstraps not only give little tired legs a rest, but support the legs in a flexed abducted (froglike) position which naturally tilts the pelvis, fills out the hip sockets, and aligns the spine.
I’ve tried other soft structured carriers and liked them, but this is the first carrier I’ve tried with footstraps, and I love that feature about it! My little man’s not complained about them at all.  If you aren’t sure just how to get your child’s foot into the foot strap just right, or aren’t sure about a certain position for the carrier, etc, there is a whole page of instructional videos right on the BOBA site.  The foot straps allow your child’s knees to be at the proper height for maxmim comfort and positioning for them.

The buckle closure is in the center of the back, which is something different than I’m accustomed to but I find it easier for me to use and honestly, it’s made this by far my favorite carrier to date.  The others I have tried all buckle to one side or the other and that often means I’m trying to buckle one handed.  Also, this has a VERY generous waist strap length.  I’m not a small girl and I’ve had to look into buying waist extenders, which adds both cost and honestly, embarassment.  Having the super long waist strap means that really ANYONE can wear this carrier.  I could have worn this while pregnant and still been comfortable, I think (I’m not saying I recommend it, just trying to illustrate how long the strap is).

The part of the carrier where your child ‘sits’ is also a bit higher/longer than I’m used to- but I like this.  Even the happiest kid being worn will at times arch their back.  I feel a bit less like they are pulling away from me when this happens in the BOBA- with some of the other carriers it was a moment of panic when they’d arch their back because I felt like they might flip out.  It also helps your little one feel nice and snug and secure which is never a bad thing in my opinion!

I think its also nice that your little one can tuck their arms in or out.  Some kids need to feel really secure and hugged and for those kids, what a great feature the bit of extra fabric is!  I know there’s been times when we are out at a large gathering, and the loud noises or just the amount of people can get my little one very anxious and upset.  The sleeping hood is one of my favorite features of a soft structured carrier- keeping the sun/heat/cold off of baby’s face while sleeping, or blocking out bright or flashing lights, keeps them snug and secure and lets them sleep without disruption.  I know I’ve used the hood more than once when my kids have been startled and upset!!

I don’t know if I am just short with big arms so its hard for me to get the arms of a carrier adjusted properly, but it always takes me 3-5 ‘wears’ to get the shoulder straps adjusted comfortably for ME.  I also usually have to have my husband help me slide the chest clip up and down a bit on the back when I’m doing a front carry before I can feel that “oh, I love wearing this carrier” feeling.  Once we have that down pat, I will almost always choose to grab the carrier over a shopping cart, stroller, just carrying- you name it!  That’s how comfortable a good carrier IS and SHOULD BE when worn and adjusted properly!!

BOBA offers several colors and offers both organic (4 colors) and classic (non organic, 6 colors, 1 print) carrier options.  The carrier we reviewed was the Organic in Willow because with Baby B, she’s forever putting fabric in her mouth, and since this is my last carrier, I wanted to be sure to get something that I can feel comfortable with her having in her mouth instead of constantly trying to distract her.

I love this carrier, for so many reasons.  One reason why, it is SO comfortable for me to wear, for a short while or a few hours- it doesn’t bother my back nor does it dig into my shoulders at all.  I think the extra length for the waist strap is a HUGE selling point for this carrier- no extra piece to use, there’s not a second buckle to check and make sure is clicked in properly, and no extra cost.  The higher fabric where your child is means your child is more secure- a great feeling for them but also really important for the adult wearing them, because it helps keep OUR center of gravity where it needs to be and therefore, in my opinion, safer.  The really nice earthy tones of most of the fabrics for BOBAs is also really nice- they’ll go with just about anything and men and women alike can use them interchangeably.  I also think the ease of strap adjustment on the waist is wonderful.

I think that some people may look at the price of a soft structured carrier and think that gosh, its kind of expensive!! But let me tell you (my husband will attest to this) that with all of the various carriers I have bought, received as gifts or loans, and tried to even make myself- I’ve spend at least triple the cost of one of these.  If I had that all to do over again, I’d just save the time and money and get a really nice carrier from day one.  Plus, a good carrier is like your favorite jeans- the more you wear it, the more comfortable it is.

You can purchase BOBA carriers on their website.  They even ship internationally and have a no-questions asked 60 day return policy (I LOVE when companies stand behind products!!).

Do you have a carrier you love- or loved?  What kind? What did you like about it?

I received a sample of this product to facilitate my review.  Opinions expressed within are my own.

  • I have a BOBA and have a hard time getting the straps adjusted too. Also, I stopped using it for a while, because my LO was too short and she HATED how tall the back was. Now that she’s a little older (16 months) I should try it again. Thanks for the detailed review.

  • >Carriers definitly make life a whole lot easier when you have a cuddly kid:)

  • >I would love one of these for my youngest one!! I love the foot holders!!

  • >I definitely love the weight requirements. There aren't many carriers that will hold you're children as they get older! The foot holders are a neat idea too! Great review

  • >I have always been so curious to know what the Boba is really like – now I do, thanks to you! I am LOVING the feet straps feature! And, yes, while carriers might seem expensive, I have definitely spent over $100 TRYING to find/make carriers that I like only to have them wind up in the closet. So I say to new parents – get the good one right away! 🙂

  • >I am somewhat of a baby carrier addict myself. I think I have 10 different ones to date. My favorite by far is the Beco. I am intrigued by the boba carrier, it looks like it has a very similar design to the Beco, with some additions such as the foot holders. I will definitely check out the Boba website for my next carrier.

  • >I really wish I would have baby carried with my son. I definitely am going to with Baby #2! Great review!

  • >I love that it can hold a child up to 45lbs

  • >I need one of these! I love that it has a hood!

  • >I wish I had known about this carrier when Emma and Ethan were little! Thanks for the information, I may have to suggest it to my sister in law!

  • >I tried wearing my son but gave up after two unsuccessful kinds of carriers. I tried a sling when he was an infant and it terrified me – I couldn't ever fix it to where I felt safe enough to let go of him.And then I tried a front carrier when he was a bit bigger but never felt like it "fit".I was unaware at the time of the MANY other carrier products there were. I am better educated now and will definitely try baby wearing again with my next one (whenever that may be!). I'm going to bookmark the Boba one so I can check it out then!

  • >I used to have a carrier for my kids (as they are all taller than me now, it would be difficult) that I loved. This one sounds so much nicer. I will keep it in mind for shower gifts for friends.

  • >I need one of these with three kids

  • >As a mom to a 3-y-o who is very cuddly and loves to to be held I need to rethink carriers, especially after reading this. I am headed to their site now!
