5 tips for hosting a garden party

Hosting a garden party can be tons of fun. Garden parties are great because they are almost always laid back and casual. Kind of like a perfect ladies’ night. I have this idea in my head that I want to have a Garden Party with my girlfriends this spring. Parties are fun. Parties have food. Who doesn’t like food? Parties with girlfriends are as fun as date night at home, just in a different way :) This post is brought to you as part of my partnership with Ristorante pizza.  Opinions are my own.

Truth be told, I’m turning 40 in May (gulp) and I think it would be fun to have a little something to celebrate. In a dream world, we’d have wonderful comfy seating and a large screen to watch a movie outdoors, plus lots of fun snacks and beverages. There’d be all kinds of little paths to wander down and fresh flowers everywhere (as I type this, we still have snow on the ground in places).

In reality, we’ll laugh and eat and drink and watch no movie, and probably won’t even notice! But the garden party setting is still a fun idea, and a great change of pace from being indoors for so long during the winter months. Regardless of weather, I came up with 5 tips for hosting a garden party.

tips for hosting a garden party

1. Lighting– I always envision garden parties being in the evening or at night. That generally means you’ll want some kind of lighting available for your guests.  You don’t want someone stumbling in the dark and falling.  You also don’t want a spotlight on someone’s face that makes them feel like they are about to perform a solo on broadway! Illuminated Garden has these Fairy Berries lights that look just awesome- and would be great for so many party themes, not just a garden party!

2. Space – Are you trying to keep guests to a patio area? Do you want to encourage them to meander? Once you make that decision, plan to define your party area either with your seating, lighting, and/or a combo of both. If you don’t have tons of space, be creative. I saw a great idea on Pinterest for using a wheelbarrow filled with ice for cold drinks. This image is part of so many breathtaking photos of a backyard wedding – so many amazing garden party ideas – taken by Mel Lawrence Photography. You can place it at the edge of the area you want your guests to be – it’s fun, free if you already have a wheelbarrow, and easy to access.

3. Theme and Décor – Do you want a theme? Do you want to go simple, sans theme? Match your decor to your vision for the party. If it’s just laid-back and casual, then make sure your decorations and plates, glasses, etc, reflect that vibe. Mason jars are a versatile decorative item for a garden party – you can use them as lanterns, beverage holders or centerpieces. They are fun, casual and pretty inexpensive. These mason jar centerpieces from Studio DIY are so simple and so beautiful!

I’m loving these utensil holders from Simply Seleta the bright colors are fun but they are so practical. Plus you can reuse them!

 display utensils

4. Bugs – Plan for a way to keep the pests away from you and your guests. Bug spray isn’t always fun to wear, but some strategically placed citronella candles or propane/butane operated mosquito traps and devices can make a world of difference to keep guests happy.

5. Food – Stick with simple.  It’s a garden party, so it’s fun, relaxed and casual. Go for easy-to-prepare meals. Think finger foods, but with a little bit of a sophisticated twist like tea sandwiches, cheese and crackers and crudité. Cut things into pretty shapes. My favorite go-to quick and easy food is Ristorante Pizza – with their gourmet toppings and thin crust, it makes a great finger food for adults. Just cut into small pieces and serve!

To see if Ristorante pizzas are available near you, check out the Store Locator. Don’t see Ristorante in your supermarket? You can put in a request with the store manager!

5 ways to save time for Easter dinner

Easter is just a few weeks away.  I’m excited to partner with HoneyBaked Ham to bring you this post with ways to save time for Easter Dinner.  Prepping holiday meals can be very time consuming and time isn’t something most people have a lot of these days. I keep thinking about my sister who almost always hosts Easter- she’s taking 3 courses at her college and she’s my dad’s Power of Attorney so she’s got a very, very full plate (pun intended) and yet, I’m sure she’s still going to offer to host for Easter. It’s what she does. That has gotten me thinking about some ways to save time for Easter dinner… who wants to spend the whole day cooking and not being with family?  Especially a year like this one where Easter is later in spring and there’s a good chance (I hope ) for a nice WARM day for everyone to be outside together!

5 Ways to Save Time for Easter Dinner

ways to save time for easter dinner

1. Plan ahead.

Seriously.  Write the menu down.  Write ingredients for each recipe down.  Check your pantry for those ingredients.  Take note of how long dishes take to cook.  Even diagram what needs to be cooked or warmed, for how long and at what temperature.

2. Delegate.

I can’t stress this enough.  As I got older and left home, I was given things to bring for dinner.  It started with rolls (store bought) and slowly I was able to handle actually cooking something that wasn’t going to make my family ill… Just because you are hosting the meal doesn’t mean you have to do everything!

Photo Credit: Garcia Studio, Inc. 933 Fielder Avenue NW Atlanta, GA 30318 404-892-2334

Ideas for others to bring:

  1. beverages
  2. rolls
  3. salad
  4. crudite
  5. dessert
  6. sides
  7. eggs for egg hunt
  8. centerpiece

If you really feel like you want to do ALL of the cooking, that’s fine. I mean, more power to you. But you can delegate other things.  Like most of us have egg hunts at some point on Easter.  So have others bring fillers for eggs and be in charge of hiding said eggs.

3. Set up the night before.

This is a big one.  Set that table for Easter dinner the night before.  Better yet, have your family set it with you or for you.  Even little kids can handle putting napkins on the table, or serving spoons.  Don’t be a martyr.  I promise, it’s a good thing to let the kids help.  Even if the forks are upside down.

4. HoneyBaked Ham-

They have hams.  They have turkey.  They have sides.  If you are short on time, pop in to you local HoneyBaked Ham store and check out what they have to offer.

Photo Credit: Garcia Studio, Inc.933 Fielder Avenue NWAtlanta, GA 30318404-892-2334

 5. Clean Up

Plan ahead for clean up.  Make sure if you are planning to send leftovers home with anyone that you have some containers that you don’t expect to see again (because no one does remember to return them).  Make sure your dishwasher and/or dish drainer are empty before anyone arrives on Easter.  Who wants to clean up from a big meal when the dishwasher is already full of dishes?  Make it easy on yourselves.  Have them ready to fill with dinner dishes and save some time.  (Also, delegate.  I’m a firm believer if you have done the cooking you are NOT going to be doing most of the cleaning.  Totally fair.  Anyone gives you grief, you send them my way).

So why do I suggest HoneyBaked Ham?

HoneyBaked is currently partnered with Feeding America to give 1 million meals this spring! So when you go to HoneyBaked to fill your belly, you are helping to fill other bellies.  That’s a pretty cool partnership, don’t you agree?

Cat not using litter box? Check this out! #PreciousCat #Giveaway

This post about a cat not using litter box anymore is sponsored by Precious Cat on behalf of the BlogPaws Blogger Network. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about Precious Cat’s Cat Attract formula, but This Mama Loves only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Precious Cat is not responsible for the content of this article.

when a cat stops using the litter box

You want me to use which litter box?

After I first learned of a new cat litter specifically designed to encourage cats to use the litter box, I was anxious to try the Cat Attract litter. Not because our cats don’t use the litter box, but because we have 2 cats who have a ‘thing’ for our basement litter box, but they aren’t down in our basement much of the time. If they aren’t where they use the loo, chances are, problems can and will arise. Please note that when I say they have a thing, I mean, they will stand at the basement door and meow.  Then they’ll rub against the door.  Lloyd, aka Moose Kitty, will often run INTO the door.  I think he’s trying to ram the door down?  Not sure. Regardless, kitties don’t need to be in the basement all the time.  It’s cold down there and they can hang up here with their humans. We’re fun! And warm! They both have spent a lot of time whining and meowing to get down and use that litter box downstairs, which was intended for just in case the cats got stuck down in the basement for a long period of time. We didn’t realize they’d start to prefer that box!

I like my litter box in the basement...

I like my litter box in the basement…

Both of our cats have avoided the litter box on our main floor for a long time and we don’t really want them in the basement. So, as you can see, this kind of caused a bit of a problem. When I was asked to check out Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract litter, I hoped it would at least encourage Lloyd and Rosabeth to give the upstairs box a chance. To my delight, within 2 days my cats were using the upstairs litter box by choice. The frequency that we have to scoop out the waste from it has more than quadrupled, and neither cat is pawing at the basement door or meowing to go down there. I’m sold, and will be buying this again.

lloyd watching fish

A cat’s version of a good TV show

lloyd and fish tank

He loves to watch the fish in the tank! We turn the tank light on and he comes running….

Now, I know we’re fortunate and that many have far more serious (and frustrating) issues with not using a litter box- at all.  Lloyd and Rosie have both missed the litter box, but only rarely. When our old cat Raistlin was alive, she would have been a cat we used the Cat Attract for.  Raistlin woulld pee just about anywhere BUT her litter box for a really long time and it made us crazy.  We never would have re-homed her… but the fact is that many cats are given up because of litter box issues and one little switch to a new litter literally could end up being a life or death matter for cats.  That”s kind of a big deal, and for those who are frustrated with a cat having litter box issues (or lack of issues I suppose), definitely worth a try.

lloyd and tobey

Don’t tell anyone, but even Tobey the dog would be sad if we weren’t around…

Cat Attract has saved cats from going to the shelter or being euthanized.

It really can save lives. Check out other litter box solutions: http://blogp.ws/LitterSolutions

So what is it about this litter that stands out?

Well, it clumps hard.  Really hard.  It doesn’t crumble when you take it from the litter box. That alone is a big deal.  Very few if any little bits fall back into the litter box.  So the smell isn’t sticking around.

Cat Attract is non toxic (super important) – it’s made of natural herbs.  No chemicals, no deoderant. No catnip. The formula is actually patent pending. It contains Chlorophyll which provides a natural odor control.  Pretty cool, right?

I’m about to place an order of more Cat Attract litter.  I told you I was going to buy it again, and I’m putting my money where my mouth is.  It’s working well for us, it’s non toxic and keeps the litter box smell down. That’s a win for everyone in my house!

One reader will win a 20 lb bag of Cat Attract Litter!

The Cat Attract giveaway, across all participating blogs, is limited to one winner per household. Winners must be 18 years of age and reside in the U.S. Winners will receive an email to provide delivery instructions. Prize delivery can take 6 – 8 weeks

Simple Blueberry Syrup Recipe

My family LOVES pancakes, waffles, and French toast…especially with syrup on top. We do enjoy maple syrup, but it’s always fun to mix things up and try new things.  We have 2 huge (9-10 foot tall) blueberry bushes that produce gallons and gallons of berries each year that we cannot consume all of, so what’s not shared with family and friends or enjoyed by us is frozen for use in winter.  One of our favorite uses for our frozen berries is Blueberry Syrup.  This blueberry syrup recipe post is brought to you by our friends at Domino Sugar through our affiliation with the Mom It Forward Blogger Network.

Easy Blueberry Syrup

3 1/2 to 4 cups Blueberries

2-3 tsp lemon juice

1 1/2 to 2 cups Domino Quick Dissolve Superfine Sugar (You can add more or less to taste, we just try to do less)

domino sugar flip top

Bring blueberries and lemon juice to a full boil

Drop heat to simmer, cook for about 10 minutes

I like to run my syrup through my immersion blender or Magic Bullet to get it nice and smooth at this point.  You can also strain it through a cheesecloth. I’m lazy.

If you want a syrup with berries in it, add about a cup of fresh or frozen berries to the batch at this point.

blueberry syrup with quick dissolve sugar

Return berries to pan, adding the sugar to sweeten. Bring to a boil and cook for 1 minute.

Let cool.

Use within 1 week.

Serve over pancakes, waffles, or even ice cream for a sweet, fruity treat!

So why did I use the Domino Quick Dissolve Superfine Sugar?  Well, it’s super easy to use, and no mess.  With a flip top cap that pours easily, the kids can help with ease, or I can multitask without so much risk of making a mess.  The quick dissolve means I don’t have to worry that the syrup will be grainy from sugar not dissolving. Pop the lid close and voila! No mess. Bonus? I can also sweeten my coffee while I’m making syrup.  The sturdy hourglass-shaped canister is available in Domino® Pourable Light Brown Sugar, C&H® Golden Brown Sugar and Quick Dissolve Superfine Sugar (available by Domino® and C&H®).

I really like making syrups like this, because I can control exactly how much sugar is going into the kids, I’m giving them organic berries from our yard, which are full of antioxidants and other great vitamins for their bodies, and it’s so easy to make.  Having an easy to use canister for my sugar just takes one step away from what I’m doing and makes my life easier.

    French Toast Wrapped Sausage Recipe

I spent most of my life not really eating much breakfast nor enjoying it when I did have it. Since having a family, we always make breakfast, and on weekends, we like to make pancakes, waffles, French toast, etc, from “scrap” as my oldest used to say, together, as a family.  So, over time, I’ve kind of started enjoying breakfast, and have found myself wanting to be more creative and have fun with breakfast meals.  This French Toast Wrapped Sausage recipe post is brought to you by our friends at Coffee-Mate. Follow Coffee-mate on Twitter for more delicious fun and giveaway opportunities!

Coffee-mate’s smooth, creamy taste has been perfected to bring out the flavor in your coffee.  When I was sipping my coffee the other day, it occurred to me, that while this is so creamy and smooth, it would be great for a French toast recipe.  That’s where this recipe is from.  I really wanted to use Coffee-Mate‘s new Extra Sweet & Creamy but as of now, haven’t found it in store, but I will be looking for it because I think it’ll just add a little extra something to the recipe.  The creamer adds a new dimension to the French toast and creates more richness.

Spring Fashion for kids from Carter’s

One of the brands I have loved the most since even before I had my own kids was Carter’s.  Great quality, fabrics and prints that don’t fade or shrink, and soft on baby and kids’ skin.  Plus, it’s so stinkin’ cute.  I lost count years ago of how many things I’d purchased from Carter’s.  Carter’s, in fact, was the one brick and mortar store my mom would venture into the last years of her life.  All other shopping was grocery store or online. Period. She loved the options and quality available at Carter’s like I do. I participated in this spring fashion for kids program on behalf of Carter’s and The Motherhood. All opinions are my own.

We were challenged to create some spring fashion for kids from the Carter’s site.  Now, I will tell you, this isn’t easy for me. There’s too many options.  Lots of times when you think Carter’s, you think of baby and toddler stuff, and you aren’t wrong. But more and more, Carter’s is offering styles for sizes 3-7 and even up to size 12.  I prefer my kids to look like kids- not mini adults.  They have plenty of time to dress up like teens and adults when the time comes.  Until then, they can be fashionable and trendy to their heart’s content…in brands that mom’s happy with.  Here are not one, not 2 but 3 outfits I pulled together from Carter’s and am smitten with.  I’m pretty fortunate my girls LIKE to dress alike or coordinating so I can mix and match to my heart’s content.  There’s lots of room for them to each express their own individual style, though.  The first 2 outfits are all about spring break because I’m oh so ready for it.  The last could be for spring break if you go someplace tropical (we aren’t) so we’ll save it for summer.

This first outfit I like to call “Birdies” and it’s so spring-like with the colors, and birds, and shoes that don’t cover the whole foot.

Anyone else sick of winter? I am!

    carters spring style birdies

1 Two Pack Sparkle and Flower Headbands 2 Braid and Bead Necklace 3 Chambray Mary Janes 4 Two Birdies Applique Tee 5 French Terry Skinny Fit Pant

Next up is the Whale of a Spring outfit.

Skorts are a big thing in our house- my girls want to wear skirts and dresses but they want to hang upside down and do cartwheels 532432431 a day.
