Affordable diapers that don’t leak DO exist #WellBeginnings #AD

This is a sponsored post about affordable diapers written by me on behalf of Well Beginnings.

Tracking Pixel

Having reliable diapers that don’t leak is kind of a MUST for parents.  Often times, that means spending top dollar with the hopes of a coupon to bring the cost down a little. With everything else in the world costing so much, that’s kind of a bummer.

Parents, what do we want?
Affordable diapers!

When do we want them?
NOW!

The bottom line is, diapers can’t leak. Period. Parents need to be able to rely on their diapers.  No ifs, ands or buts.  (See what I did there?  Bum-mer? Bottom line? But(t)s?)

affordable diapers

I still remember when my oldest nephew was born (sorry Joey) almost 29 years ago, and how my sister searched for diapers she could both afford AND that wouldn’t leak.  I also have a vague recollection that they were about 25 times thicker and bulkier than today’s diapers, but I digress.  Anyway, diapers have changed a LOT in 28+ years (thankfully) in terms of their bulk, performance, and also the brands that are making quality diapers themselves. Also, I’m pretty sure I can clearly remember one time when Joey rolled over in a new size diaper and his diaper seemed to stay where it was.  Stretch wasn’t really part of the diaper language back then.  Poor babies.

That’s where we are today, and why I’m writing this post.  Well Beginnings diapers.  Oh, yes.  I mean, aside from the super cute elephants (and who doesn’t love baby elephants? HMM??), Well Beginnings diapers offer what parents want most- diapers that don’t leak and stand up to wetness, at an affordable price.

Well Beginnings diapers are found at Walgreens.  (Is there no end to the wonder of Walgreens?). They were developed FOR active babies and toddlers.  Which means they were developed for those squirmy, wiggly, dancy little ones who make us laugh and smile so very much, and test the limits of all diapers put on their little bums. Like any disposable diaper needs to have these days, the waist and side panels are soft- and stretchy, so they really will move WITH your little one.

affordable diapers that don't leak

My favorite part of the Well Beginnings diapers (aside from performance, but I feel like that kind of goes without saying- if it keeps my kids leak free day and night, we have a winner) is that the inner liner is hypoallergenic, with natural botanicals, vitamin E and aloe.  Soothing and gentle on baby’s delicate skin.   All of this together means that Well Beginnings is a brand that offers affordable diapers that don’t leak.

So what’s your #1 requirement for a diaper?  Is it cost, is it performance?

5 ways for kids to help clean the house #SwifferatTarget #CleverGirls #sp

My little one, like most kids, is great at making messes. It’s kind of a gift of little kids. Fortunately for us, we have a little one who also wants to help us keep the house clean. She’s always the first to ask “Can I help?” and really, she’s a great helper. She just needs the right tools and guidance. We’ve actually had all 3 of our kids doing chores since they were 18 months or so. My little one has been helping her daddy to keep the floors all clean with the new Swiffer Sweep & Trap while I’ve been in bed with strep throat all week and it got me to thinking I wanted to share some of our family ways for kids to help clean the house with you. Instead of cringing at life’s little messes and messmakers, why don’t we find ways to embrace the messes and teach the messmakers?!

ways kids can help clean the house

1. Clearing and setting the table

This one is easy- even an 18 month old can carry, say, spoons to the table. We used plastic IKEA dishes for the kids for a long time so our kids were able to do bowls and plates for themselves and one another from a young age. That also meant they could clear those from the table. I will say we ALWAYS have insisted and still do that the kids are on their feet before they try to carry any dishes or anything from the table. Lessons learned the hard way, friends.

2. Wiping the table, chairs, cabinets.

We use almost all natural cleaners in our house, so it’s all pretty safe, but even a damp cloth is enough for your little one to be part of the team. Baby wipes can also work.

3. Loading and unloading dishwasher.

Most families I know keep kids’ dishes and utensils where they can reach them. If not the kids’ stuff then maybe storage containers. Those are the things even the littlest ones can help with. Our kids have helped to put their dishes into the kid drawer for as long as I can remember. We just make sure any sharp things are out of the dishwasher before they are having their turn. Now, as the kids are older, they are able to stack dishes that they aren’t able to reach the cabinet for on the counter, sort utensils, etc.

4. Sorting laundry and putting it away.

Yep. Totally serious. Kids know what socks are vs. pants from a really young age. Why not make a game of it and teach them to help with laundry? My kids are pretty skilled with laundry sorting and putting away (this is also one chore that they can get paid for, because I HATE sorting folded laundry and worse? putting it all away. They know if they sort and put away a basket, they get $1.00).

5. Floor cleaning and care

00_AD_coop_full_fsci_2v1_vFeb13

No, most kids can’t handle a whole vacuum when they are little. That’s ok. Full sized brooms also are hard to maneuver. But a small broom and dustpan? Yes. A Swiffer Sweep & Trap is a really cool new product from Swiffer that uses the same dry cloths as the Swiffer Sweeper, but also has rotating blades and dirt bin to pick up loose pieces like, you know, the cat food my 4 year old spills every single day when she feeds the animals. The Sweep & Trap has a nice compact size, is lightweight, and you can skip the middle piece of the handle to make this a kid-sized “vacuum” as my littlest calls it. Actually, she’s decided it’s HER vacuum… who am I to argue?

swiffer sweep trap mess

Uses rotating blades to pick up large particles and flicks them into a dirt bin while the attached Swiffer Sweeper dry cloth traps dirt, dust and hair that brooms can leave behind. This innovative combination cleans up big and small messes in a single swipe, so you can embrace life’s little messes. And to embrace life’s little mess makers helping to clean up those messes.

Swiffer Sweep Trap during

Only intended for dry pick-up on hard floor surfaces. As you can see, we did not use it on the mat under the pets’ dishes, and we really really need to get our hardwood floors redone. That’s another project for another day.
swiffer sweep trap after

I LOVE this new Swiffer product. It’s not perfect, but it’s quick and easy to use, 100% chemical free which means the kids are safe to use it, and it lets the kids play an active role in cleaning the house. Something they SHOULD be learning!

Oral Health Tips for Children’s Dental Health Month #ncdhm #giveaway

I have heard from many places in recent years that oral health is the doorway to overall health.  It makes sense when you think about it…. the mouth is kind of the doorway to the body… and if that’s got issues, chances are, those issues aren’t going to stay exclusive with our mouth.  We all get (hopefully) 2 sets of teeth.  That’s it.  Baby teeth and adult teeth.  Some of us, myself included, didn’t even “come” with a full set of adult teeth.  Yep. I’m short a molar on my upper left jaw and never has anyone seen the lower 2 wisdom teeth on an xray of my mouth.  I’m 3 teeth shy of a set.  (I’m sure there’s a joke in there somewhere).

For folks like my husband, who “came” with a full set of baby teeth but not adult teeth, well, they are the exception more than the norm.  My husband takes better care of his mouth than anyone I have met- but, then, I guess anyone would be hypervigilant about keeping their teeth when they were missing 12 adult teeth.  His, like my few, never developed.  Only he had a lot missing.  He’s had bridges since he was 18.  BridgeS.

This is a sponsored post about oral health tips as part of my association with the Mom It Forward Blogger Network.  Opinions are my own.

trying to blow bubbles with trident

She’s so close to blowing bubbles. SO close!

So you can kind of see why we might be a little all up in the kids’ proverbial grills about taking care of their teeth.  We brush. We floss.  We rinse.  We do not chew sugar gum.  Ever.  I will pay them for gum given to them but they will not chew it.  Why am I telling you this?  Because it’s Children’s Dental Health Month!  And it’s always good to have some reminders about oral health care… so when I was asked if I’d share about Trident Gum’s partnership with Smiles Across America over the past 10 years, I didn’t hesitate to say yes.  In 10 years, Trident and Smiles Across America have helped over 2 million kids.  That’s a lot of 0’s and a whole lot of smiles (if you like numbers, it’s also over $2.5 million).

 trident logo

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and Trident wants to share oral health tips* from The Partnership for Healthy Mouths to keep the pearly whites of those young (and young at heart) healthy and happy all year long:

  • Brush 2Min (2X) – It’s best for kids to brush their teeth for 2 minutes, 2 times a day for healthier teeth, good breath and fewer cavities.
    • Children 2 or older should always use fluoride toothpaste.
  • Visit a Dentist – Kids and parents should visit a dentist regularly starting no later than age 1.
  • Floss – Kids should clean between their teeth once a day with floss to remove plaque and food where a brush can’t reach.
    • Children as young as 2 can floss if their teeth are touching.
  • Fluoride – Fluoride is nature’s cavity fighter and can occur naturally in some water and food sources. Did you know that to help protect teeth from cavities fluoride is added to dental products like toothpaste?
  • Chew Sugar-Free Gum – Chewing sugar-free gum, like Trident, helps keep teeth clean after eating and between brushing. In fact, chewing Trident sugar-free gum after eating stimulates saliva flow, which helps reduce the risk of cavities by reducing plaque acids, removing debris and strengthening teeth.

We are a Trident family.  I’m a bubble gum girl, as is my youngest.  My husband and my oldest like ‘spicy’ gums, especially cinnamon.  My son?  He’s not picky.  He’s not really ‘into’ gum too much but when he has it, he’s pretty easy to please. ALWAYS sugar free. Period.

Toy storage that makes cleaning up fun! ($150 Prize Pack #Giveaway)

A while back, I lost my mind.  I think it was the eleventy billionth LEGO brick I stepped on, or maybe it was the fourteen thousandth article of doll clothing/accessories I found under my pillow.  The toys are taking over my house and it has.to.stop. Toy storage needs to be stepped up.

I love my kids. I love their toys. I do. I really, really do. I have a deep love of toys. It’s just the leaving of the toys everywhere in the house that makes me crazy.  I love my son’s LEGO creations but I really don’t need to find them in my bed, or in the cabinet next to my deodorant. I just don’t. Racecars don’t need to be in the fridge, and doll shoes don’t belong in the VCR slot. (RIP VCR, RIP).

Three kids,  + three kids’ toys + a small sized house = need for organization.  (I really, REALLY wanted to put 4 in there, because, it was like math, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it). Now do 3 kids + 3 kids’ toys + a small house + 3 kids who hate cleaning up their toys = mom with a lost mind.

This is where I tell you what’s helping me regain my mind, one tiny little toy at a time.  It’s really not one thing, but several.  ToyTainer.

toytainer logo

ToyTainer is a company that clearly spends a LOT of time either secretly videotaping my children or is run by people who have children just like mine.  They came up with toys for kids to play with that also can house those same toys so that the children playing with them want to put them away WHERE THEY BELONG.  They asked if I’d check out their products and um, yea. Of course I would.

My little one is at the oh I love puppies and kittens and everything princess age. If it sparkles and comes with a lot of little parts she can shove into a pocket, even better. ANDDDDDDDDDDD she likes to have sets of things (can’t deny, that’s right from mama). So she has a new collection of Palace Pets toys. Which we’ve been shoving into this metal, sharp edged  bin thingy because we hadn’t had anything else that worked. Not safe and not practical, and always falling open.  Apparently, there IS a difference between the brushes that Cinderella’s puppy uses vs.  the brushes Snow White’s pet Apple uses. And if you know 4 year olds, you understand that they will smell your fear that a piece or part was misplaced…and they will hound you to find that piece.

HEY MOM! I put my Palace Pets away!! All by myself!!

See this magical rectangle of pink? That’s the Shoe Box Play-n-Store Castle from ToyTainer.

Watch what it does.

palace pets in bin

And then… and then….

palace pets on mat

She can play with the pets.  All of them.  On a  mat.  That folds up into the case to carry the pets.  Do you SEE this, people?

She cleans up her toys and puts them away.  (Well, really, she cleans up THESE toys and puts them away. Baby steps).

It even has a handle so she can carry it from one place to another.

No pony brushes in my bed, no tiaras in my fridge.  No accessories in the laundry.

ToyTainer, if you are listening? I love you. Long time.

There’s all kinds of other equally fabulous ToyTainer products. Some are pink and some are blue and some are neither.  My son has more fun dunking Beanie Boos into the Fold n’Go Games Center on the back of his closet door than putting laundry away but… but… the 4003 Beanie Boos that live in my house are all in one place. And not in my bed.

American Girl, Build-A-Bear, Barbie and Strawberry Shortcake…oh, and you, too, my little LaLaLoopsy pals… you can all rest easy, because you can spend some time on the back of the girls’ door now in the Princess Castle Fold n’ Go.  Mommy won’t be stepping on Jasmine’s leg and dismembering her any longer.

Black Bean Veggie Wrap makes brown bagging fun!

So now that my oldest has officially gone meat free, and is living as a vegetarian, I’m finding meatless lunches are a little bit (not tons) more challenging to pack.  The girl who loved ham and cheese won’t eat the ham anymore and I’m left trying to make sure she’s getting her protein in.  She REALLY loves the Black Bean Burger from MorningStar Farms and I was thinking today that I should do something fun with those. So, here you go.  A meatless wrap that’s full of flavor and protein and easy to bring for lunch! (We love the Thermos Funtainers- they really truly keep foods quite warm for several hours)  Here’s the black bean veggie wrap recipe I came up with for brown bagging days

spicy black bean veggie wrap

Ingredients:

Tortilla wrap (we use taco sized)- for my husband, I’d probably use a larger tortilla)

Morningstar Farms Black Bean Burger(s)

Lettuce

Shredded carrots, diced cucumber, sliced pepper (any veggies you want)

Cheese (we did 1T of shredded cheddar)

1T Ranch dressing (if desired- we use a light version)

black bean veggie wrap recipe

Directions:

Prepare burger as instructed.  (While I was waiting on burger to cook, I warmed the Funtainer with hot water inside of it for 5 minutes)

When burger is cooked, slice into thin strips and spread strips atop wrap.

Add lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, any veggies you’d like ( we don’t do the tomato, she won’t eat them)

Add cheese (shredded or slices- preference rules here!)

Drizzle a little bit of Ranch dressing on top

Fold one end of your wrap up over your food Starting at one side of the tortilla, carefully roll into a nice, tight wrap.

Slice in half and tuck into container to keep warm until lunch.  Or, plate and enjoy!

Serve with fresh fruit and extra veggies for a great “brown bag” lunch

Five things I love #DunkinMugUp

Happy Valentine’s Day, my friends!! I can’t believe it’s this far into 2014. Where does the time go?

With the day of love coming tomorrow, it seemed kind of appropriate to talk about things I love. So without further ado, here are 5 things that I love.

#1 My family- they are my heart, and nothing matters more to me than my husband and our three little ones. I also love that my 8 year old is old enough to make me coffee now.

#2 My family and friends- The family of my heart and of my blood, and my friends- without whom, my world would be empty. I love them all.

#3 Coffee. Specifically, the caffeine from coffee. Super specifically, the caffeine in Dunkin Donuts coffee. Love it. (And my family and friends will tell you I love things a lot more after I’ve indulged in some coffee in the morning)

We actually combined my love of #2 and #3 and made a coffee care package to send to my nephew Kirby who’s away at college. I’d promised him I’d send him some Dunkin Donuts coffee but since it’s Valentine’s Day, we decided to add a few little surprises into his box before we mailed it. (Can you tell my 4 year old likes tape? I think she used a roll of tape on that card!!)

#4 Laughing- there’s nothing better in the world than having a good laugh, unless it’s sharing a laugh with those I love.

#5 Chocolate. Which is something I should love less, but I can’t help it. It’s like one of the Sirens of mythological times. (Did you know that Dunkin Donuts has chocolate in some of their flavored coffees? Trus

I hope by now you’re feeling the love. Show Dunkin’ Donuts your love for coffee by uploading a photo of you and the mug that you love here for a chance to win prizes in the Mug Up Contest.

Reading Eggs boosts literacy for kids 3-13 #ReadingEggsUS iPad Mini #giveaway

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Reading Eggs, a website designed to help children ages 3-13 with reading and literacy skills via games, songs, activities, rewards and more.

reading eggs logo

My older 2 kids, ages 8.5 and 6, are both reading now. Little sister, 4 1/2, is very anxious to read like big brother and big sister.  She’s very, very close to reading and can read a few sight words, but shes not quite there yet.  She’s been really excited to check out the Reading Eggs website.  (Especially because she gets to use Mommy’s new desktop that has a ‘magic’ monitor that can come off the stand and go around the house!)

four year old playing reading eggs

I have had a love of reading since I was a little girl, still a toddler. I haven’t ever felt like I’d read “enough” and so far, my kids seem to be following in my footsteps.  My husband’s never been a big reader, but with 4 book lovers in the house, he’s come to love reading and has actually started reading for enjoyment.  I feel like literacy is one of the most important skills anyone and everyone can have.  I’m not sure how I could function without literacy.  And, in my opinion, the earlier literacy begins, the stronger the understanding is for the rest of your life.

reading eggs lessons map 4 year old

With Reading Eggs, kids are given some questions (if they choose) to assess what levels of instruction they will need.  They can skip the assessment tools and just start going into activities, songs and games.  For my little one, we did the assessment because I wanted to make sure she’s not doing thing that are too far above her skill level that will frustrate her, but also not so simple for her that she’s easily bored.  The assessment took just a few minutes (for both the Reading Eggs and MathSeeds assessments), and her lessons map (shown above when she’d first started).

That kind of sounds like school. It really isn’t. Once you’ve finished the assessment tools, kids are kind of free to navigate the site to play, learn, explore and while they are doing all of the fun activities, not only are they learning, they are also earning rewards to play other games and unlock fun new features. My bigger kids haven’t been ‘unleashed’ on Reading Eggs yet, but they will be starting to do their activities today as promised.  I will always prefer anything electronic that offers educational components to the alternative, so having them excited to play these games online makes me happy. The cool new desktop helps get them excited.  They are all convinced it’s magical.  Who am I to contradict that?

Chocolate Smoothie Recipe for Kids

So here’s the thing.  The folks at TruMoo just came out with this limited edition, absolutely fabulous new flavor of their milk- in the form of Chocolate Marshmallow Milk.  I  know, right?  Well, I want some. You know, for the kids and stuff.  I mean, they did ask me if I’d write a post about it, but seriously, who would say no to writing about chocolate milk?  Especially chocolate milk with marshmallow?

trumoo chocolate marshmallow

There’s a tiny problem.

So far we don’t have this in stores in Connecticut yet.  I have not given up hope.

So we’re still excited to try it.

But until we CAN try this delightfully delicious, brand new, high fructose corn syrup free beverage, with no artificial growth hormones, we’ve got to make other arrangements.  It’s good hot AND cold, so you can enjoy it any way you like it.  A nice glass of s’mores? Yes please!!

 trumoo chocolate marshmallow #trumoo

So today, when the big kids got home from school, both were SUPER grouchy and very displeased with the amount of homework they had been assigned. I thought I’d have a fun with a quick little Chocolate smoothie recipe for kids as a surprise.

 chocolate smoothie recipe for kids

All I did to make TruMoo into a chocolate smoothie was toss 5 ice cubes in the KitchenAid mixer with 2 cups of TruMoo Chocolate Milk. Then I blended them. That’s it!

All 3 kids gave this 2 thumbs up.  And promptly asked me to look up online where to find Chocolate Marshmallow milk!

TruMoo Chocolate Marshmallow milk is made with fresh white milk sourced from regional dairies around the country – pure cocoa and just enough natural sugar to make it taste great. I love that I was able to make a fun treat for the kids that didn’t involve a ton of sugar and extra calories.  I think we may have a little fun and add some banana next time!!

Personalized Greeting Cards for Valentine’s Day #SendMoreLove

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Treat.com for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I am not one who has time to stand in a card store for an hour to pick that perfect card for anyone.  I used to, and I loved it. But now? Time is money. I also find that while I like X about a card, maybe Y isn’t great, or the images don’t work for me…and it feels kind of generic. So… it’s time to bid farewell to generic store-bought cards, and say hello to Treat. Treat.com is an online service where you can create one-of-a-kind personalized greeting cards from your PC or iPhone and they’ll print and mail them for you! This Valentine’s Day, treat those you love to a personalized card with your own photos and text, made especially for them.

I decided to choose Valentine’s Day Cards for the 5 people closest to me or to my kids (my sister).

My husband- we’re not sappy, so not many lovey-dovey cards are passed between us.  This one just grabbed my attention and made me giggle, so that decision was easy.

Why yes, yes I did totally order that card for him.  It’s funny. No need to take life so seriously!

It’s silly, it’s funny, but it’s got a sweet message.  He already knows I LOVE him. And I sign everything me, which is a ‘thing’ for another day.

For my oldest? She’s 8 1/2 and is obsessed with kittens, puppies, ponies…baby animals or cats, mostly. So this one was purr-fect.

For our son, I went with a cute but not super cute card that hasn’t got much script- he’s a newer reader and I want it simple for him to read.

Sweet and simple.  I didn’t want to choose something too cute and mushy.  He’d be quick to tell me that it was “gross” which is his favorite word lately. I think this will make him happy!j valentine inside

For our littlest one, who’s 4 1/2 and LOVES princess and sparkly anything and everything, this was the easiest choice I could make.

She’ll be so excited just to see the princess and her name!

For my sister, who’s very close with my kids and is more like a grama to them than aunt…

She goes to their games, she keeps art supplies in her house for when the kids are there. She’s got kid snacks in her pantry and drinks in the fridge.  So this card was PERFECT for the kids to send her… they’ll all want to make her a picture to put inside I’m sure.
