Kick some RASH! With Boudreaux’s Butt Paste

boudreaux's butt paste logo

This post is sponsored by Boudreaux’s Butt Paste®, the effective diaper rash cream that treats and prevents diaper rash with every change. Let’s kick some rash!

If there is one thing that parents can ALL agree upon, it might be that diaper rash is not fun at all.  Not for the baby, and not for the parents or caregivers.  Sure, treatment methods may vary, but ultimately? If you find a diaper rash treatment that works for your child, you stick with it.  Always.  I know for me, once I knew what worked for my babies’ skin, there wasn’t much that could persuade me to try other products, brands, etc.  Having seen my little ones’ sore tushies and feeling like I wasn’t able to help them feel better wasn’t something I wanted to mess around with.

Boudreaux’s Butt Paste was a brand I tried for diaper rash treatment because the name caught my attention.  It’s a brand I love and use even today because it works great on my kids.  I still love the name.

My kids all had diaper rashes, but my daughter’s first diaper rash was the most memorable.  I was so diligent about changing her frequently, and keeping her clean and as dry as possible, and like many diaper rashes, started as just a hint of redness on her diaper area.  I patted her dry and put a small amount of cream on her.  An hour later, I changed her diaper again. I was very surprised at how red her diaper area was even after I’d used a little bit of cream. This time, I decided we’d do some naked time on a blanket, and I let her “air” for a few minutes. I applied cream much more liberally after this and diapered her again, making a mental note to check her again in an hour.  Thankfully, things didn’t get worse, and a few days of applying diaper cream liberally had her good as new.  Other rashes we have had have been far worse,  thankfully only a handful of them- most were about the same.  I’ve tried to have quality diaper creams in the house that help to soothe tender skin and provide a barrier to wetness to keep that baby skin from getting worse and letting it heal. Like I said before, Boudreaux’s Butt Paste has always been a favorite brand to Kick some RASH! with!

PULL-UPS® Night*Time – New Features, Money Saving Coupons and a Giveaway!

This post brought to you by PULL-UPS® Night*Time. All opinions are 100% mine.

Bedtime isn’t always the easiest time of day around here.  Especially with 2 kids who don’t need any nighttime wetness protection my little one does not like having to wear anything but her underwear to bed.  We have noticed that things go a little bit smoother when we use FUN training pants, especially ones with her favorite character friends on them.  The new PULL-UPS® Night*Time Glow in the Dark training pants have added absorbency for total nighttime protection.  Plus, who doesn’t love glow in the dark stuff?

Without fun training pants, bedtime is kind of like this: Brush teeth, potty, wash hands, freak  out at the mere mention of having to wear a diaper or training pant.  WITH fun training pants, it’s smooth sailing.  Cinderella calms her world, what can I say?

One thing I really am happy about is that more and more I’m finding night time products available for smaller kids, with the more “big kid” designs.  My little one isn’t 30 pounds yet, and diapers are too “babyish” for her, but she definitely isn’t ready for underwear at night.  Being able to at least wear big kid training pants makes HER a lot less resistant at bedtime, and makes everyone’s routine go smoother.  The PULL-UPS Night*Time come in Cinderella for girls and Lightning McQueen and Mater for boys…which is perfect for my little one because she is in full princess-obsession mode right now! They come in 2 sizes: 2T-3T (18-34 lbs) and 4T-5T (32-40 lbs) Of course she’s also been a huge fan of Mater since she first saw him on TV so she’d be happy to wear a training pant with him on it as well.

“Charge up” the PULL-UPS® Night*Time under a bright light for at least 30 seconds and then turn off the lights. Surprise, they GLOW!!!

Did you know you can head over to check out PULL-UPS® Night*Time Glow in the Dark page and while there, you can create your own fun and entertaining Glow Show Story, perfect for bedtime, and enter for your chance to win a $100 Walmart Gift Card!  You can enter as many times as you would like and new stories will be created regularly. Winners will also be announced on the PULL-UPS® Night*Time page.

Identifying Bedwetting vs. Night time potty training (Prize Pack Giveaway)

I wet the bed until I was in fourth grade.  My parents tried everything they could- limiting fluids, waking me to pee at night- everything.  My oldest had wasn’t fully night trained until she was 5 1/2 years old- she day trained at 21 months.  I was told by more than one medical professional that until my child was dry at night and during the day that I could not say she was truly potty trained.  I beg to differ.  I also explained to them why I disagreed and respectfully asked them to educate themselves on my way out the door.  (Politely).

goodnites

No “babyish” designs for bigger kids- THANK YOU GoodNites!

Understanding where Potty Training ends and Bedwetting begins is crucial to finding the right solution for your child.

5-7 million children wet the bed in the United States according to the National Kidney Foundation – that’s more than the number of children who entered kindergarten in the United States in 2011 according to the U.S. Department of Education. (I always thought I was one of few with this problem.  Turns out, nothing could be farther from the truth!)

95% of both boys and girls are potty trained by age four but 40% of parents say their child between the ages of 4 and 6 wets the bed at least once a week. (I’ve always believed that bedwetting and “night training” are totally separate of potty training)

GoodNites® Underwear are 40% more absorbent than the leading training pants and are specially designed to protect while lying down, to help protect pajamas and bedding, helping kids get a better sleep and wake up feeling ready for school. (My daughter has always been a very heavy wetter.  There’s no training pant that was absorbent enough to keep her dry, and even if there were diapers that could keep her dry, I can’t imagine making my 5 1/2 year old wear a diaper just to stay dry– we need products like the GoodNites for bigger kids!!)

Finding a solution that works for your child is SO important.  Educating ourselves about bedwetting vs. night time potty training is also important.   I’m almost thankful that I’d been a bedwetter as a kid, because I felt like maybe I could understand more what my daughter was feeling.  Some nights, she’d be in tears promising she’d wake up and not wet the bed.  It was awful.  She wanted it so badly, but like her mama, she’s a very heavy sleeper with really vivid dreams.  Not conducive to waking up and getting to the bathroom on time.

Britax Stroller Board

britax stroller board

In March, I got to head to NYC to have brunch with Britax and check out some of their new strollers and accessories.  One of those accessories is one that we’re still loving- and using- the Stroller Board.  The stroller board attaches fairly easily to most strollers and can hold up to a 50lb child…which means that you can have the option for a bigger kid to have a few moments rest when wandering around a fair, or an event…wherever you are.

BRITAX stroller board

I LOVE that you can adjust the height- makes things easier since my kids are all about 6 inches apart in height.  The stroller board gives you an additional spot for a child to rest without having the bulk of a double stroller or second seat- for the kids who don’t want or don’t need a ride in the stroller, but maybe just want to rest a bit.  Having this at the zoo with us was a lifesaver!

The BRITAX Stroller Board easily attaches to most strollers providing travel options for additional children. Three wheels with independent suspension provide a comfortable and stable ride for children weighing up to 50 pounds. The quick release design enables easy removal and installation of the stroller board. The stroller board can easily be adjusted to accommodate your child’s height. When not in use, the storage strap will hold the board up and out of the way.

  • Compatible with most strollers, including BRITAX B-READY (without Second Seat or Lower Infant Car Seat Adapter attached), B-AGILE, B-SCENE, B-NIMBLE, BLINK, and CHAPERONE strollers and BOB Revolution SE (single and duallie), Revolution CE, Sport Utility Stroller (single and duallie), Ironman (single and duallie), and Stroller Strides (single and duallie) strollers
  • Three wheels with independent suspension provide balance and child comfort
  • Quick-release feature allows the removal of the stroller board while the mounting bracket remains installed
  • Storage strap to position board out of the way when unoccupied
  • Attaches to horizontal or vertical stroller frames
  • Three way adjustable attachment allows the board to fit on most strollers
  • MSRP (USD) $89.99

Knowing that this stroller board is made from the folks at Britax who always put safety first made me want to try this product.  Having tried this product, and seen how useful it is, with my older kids, I love it.  Definitely a great option for families with more than one child!

Tips to prepare for the chance of the “first” period starting at school

u by kotex tween productsSchool’s back in swing, kids are full on with schoolwork, homework, afterschool activities, etc.  They are busier than ever.  Given how busy schedules are, it’s a great time to also help your daughter prepare for the chance that her first period may happen when she’s at school.

We’ve talked about what to expect a bit, but now I want to share some tips about what to prepare her WITH in the event that this occasion happens at school.  It’s hard enough to have your period, having a surprise you aren’t prepared for is going to make it worse.

u by kotex for tweens

  • Make sure she has her emergency pack!  What to put in the pack?  That’s up to you, but one thing that is definitely going to be in my daughters’ will be  U by Kotex Tween pads and panty liners, some bandaids, and probably a spare pair of underpants.  Maybe a Hershey’s Hug and a Hershey’s Kiss for some love from home.  I would even go so far as to send this with her if she goes to an overnight at a friend’s house or something as well.
  • Prepare her with what to expect from her body in terms of cramping (this is big for me- I have horrible cramping and bloating just before my period and the first few days and always have had the cramping- I wouldn’t want her to be alarmed that something was very wrong)…headaches…moodiness- in addition to the actual period itself.  Telling her ahead of time may mean less fear from her, and it may be easier for her to handle if this starts and she’s not home with you.
  • Keep track.  I know from my siblings that their daughters showed symptoms of the cycle beginning many months before their periods actually started.  Keep track of it, and talk with your daughter about even just putting a small dot on a calendar, so she can start to learn when it may come, and when it has come before.
  • Ask if she has questions.  It doesn’t have to be a big huge serious talk, but I’m a firm believer in open dialogue.  My daughter has asked me when she will need to bring her emergency pack to school with her- weeks after we’d discussed.  So I took that time to explain that we’d probably both know the time was coming, because we’d notice changes and that we’d talk about it so she’d have it in time.  Want some tips? I’ve found the U by Kotex site to have a huge amount of resources for moms and daughters alike! It has facts about puberty, suggestions to start the conversation, and so much more.

Rice Krispies Make Mornings Better (Giveaway)

Yes, she did have Rice Krispies for breakfast. Yummy breakfast plus new clothes made for one happy girl.

Here’s something I bet you don’t know about me.  My all time favorite cereal is Rice Krispies.  With milk, without milk, in a bowl, in a cup, out of a baggie…it doesn’t matter. I love them.  Rice Krispie treats? Yes, please.  Obviously I love the taste of them, but I’ve grown to love them even more as my kids have come along, particularly now, as we’re back to school and mornings are often rush, rush, rushed.   I prefer when my kids are happy and smiling before school- a good breakfast and an organized mom in the morning helps me with that goal…

Rice Krispies are good for filling bellies, they are easy to serve, and when else does your breakfast “talk” to you the way Rice Krispies do?  With some fruit, they make for a healthy, filling start to a busy day at school or work.

Besides serving Rice Krispies (which I buy at BJ’s because it’s more cost effective and I don’t run out as soon)– some other tips to make school (or work) mornings busier for moms:

1. Pack Lunches and Snacks the night before. I can’t say this enough.  It leaves you time to make and drink some coffee in the morning instead of fumbling around trying to put together a semblance of a healthy, filling snack or lunch. Put the whole lunchbox/bag into the fridge, and you’ll save a LOT of your time in the morning.  I try to force myself to do this before bed- it doesn’t usually even take me 10 whole minutes- even to do my husband’s lunch…but the time and stress saved in the morning makes it SO worth it.

2. Backpacks/bookbags: Ready to go the night before.  Chances are, the homework’s done, and it’s easy to check the calendar for any “specials” like library books that must be returned, or sneakers that have to be brought for gym class.  Share day?  Get it ready the night before!

3. Calendars are on our walls, USE THEM.  When I was a nanny, and I won’t lie, I’m not as good as I was then, but each person in the family had a color.  So all of their “stuff” was written on the calendar in their color.  So if they were able to read or not, they’d know if there was ‘something’ for them to remember.  Share (show & tell) days, library, field trips, appointments, scout meetings, club meetings, sports-pictures….all of these things can be on the calendar.  The visual cue can be a reminder not just to us as the parents, but also for the kids to see and help learn to be responsible for their belongings.

4. I’d love to tell you to set out breakfast table settings the night before, but that won’t ever happen in my house.  It would probably make life easier, but with a small kitten in the house, for me?  It would probably make life harder, and messier, because I can almost guarantee that our little Sunshine kitty would be climbing onto that table and knocking dishes off at some point.

5. If your kids are not “morning” people, try new ways to wake them.  Sing a silly song, make a silly face when you wake them.  Make getting shoes on a “race” to see who can get ready to head out the door first.  I find that if I’m being silly and having fun, sooner or later, the kids fall into being silly and fun, and we have a little less grouchy and a lot more smiley.

  • Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® cereal and memories go hand in hand. This back-to-school season, spark a moment of joy at the breakfast table with the simple grains of rice you can see and the Snap!™, Crackle!™, & Pop!™ you can hear.
  • With vitamin- and mineral-fortified Kellogg’s Rice Krispies cereal, moms don’t need to worry about sacrificing nutrition when getting their family out the door each morning. Rice Krispies cereal is made with simple ingredients and is fortified with 11 essential vitamins and minerals.

We had “The Talk” today. The period talk.

So my daughter has been eyeing a little pink cosmetic bag that arrived a few weeks ago that’s been in my closet.  She’s also been uber-inquisitive when I’ve had my period lately, noticing I’m in the bathroom more frequently, products more noticeable, etc.  As part of the Kotex Ambassador program, we received these little bags with some emergency essentials, and as I have been putting this post off because I knew we’d have a CONVERSATION, but today, it just happened.

u by kotex

Mom, what’s the bag for? Is it for me?  Can I see?

Well, um…its sort of for you.  But for when you are older.

MOM. I JUST turned 7. I’m totally older.  PS can I have it now?

Uh…sure.  Here you go.

u by kotex for tweens

What IS this?  Ohhhhhhhh is the chapstick pink?  Can I have it mom?  Please?

(Waving U by Kotex pads around) Are these stickers?  Notepads?  Can I have them? I want blue, and purple!

This is it.  Oh crap. Yes, you can have them, but you probably won’t need to use them for a really long time. They are pads, and liners.  They go on your underwear.

Like a diaper?

Well, not really.  When you are older, and when your sister is older, women’s bodies have cycles that happen each month, and at the end of the cycle, you have blood.

u by kotex products for tweens

THE BLOOD? (eyes are huge)

Yes, the blood.  Although most people call it their period.  It doesn’t hurt.  And we can talk more about it when the time gets closer.  But this bag, it’ something they sent to us, with some supplies for you to keep on hand, for just in case.  Sometimes your period can kind of sneak up on you, and it’s always good to have a pad or a liner in your bag, for just in case.

OK.  Am I going to be grouchy when I get the blood- I mean the periods- like you?  Because you are super grouchy sometimes.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm…maybe.  You never know.

Can I have the chapstick now?  It’s pink.  And I have a nail can I use the nailfile?

That’s it folks.  Nothing earth shattering to report here.  All that worry and buildup for nothing.  Sigh.

About an hour later she came up and patted my back.  Thanks for the emergency bag, mom.  I like it.  You did a great job today.

Granted, she’s only 7.  But at least we’ve broken the ice.  Although I guess we’ve started breaking it before today. We’ll talk more when she’s got more questions.  I think we’re good.  We’ve tucked the bag in a special place in her closet for safekeeping, until we think it’s a good idea to keep in her backpack.

I think the next time we broach this topic, we’ll maybe do it on a mother-daughter date, when it’s just the two of us and we can have some time to talk.  Even if it’s at a mall shopping date, she can ask questions and I can answer.  Bonding moments can happen when you least expect them to- I wasn’t expecting to have a “talk” today but honestly? I’m glad we did.

What are your mother-daughter bonding activities?  Do you take those times and use them to have important conversations?  Do you go with the flow?
