Down and Dirty Tips to Bathe Your Dog at Home

This post brought to you by Sterling. The content and opinions expressed below are that of this mama loves.

As nice as it would be to send your dog to the groomers every week, not everyone has the budget for that. As a matter of fact, the average dog owner only sends their dog to the groomer every 4 to 6 weeks. To groom your small dog, it can cost anywhere from $30-$50, a medium breed will run $50-$70 and a large dog will set you back $70-$90. With sky high costs like that, most of us will wait until the dog gets really dirty or have hair mats we cannot handle. If we only knew how to handle bathing your dog at home, right? Well, with these tricks, you will be grooming your own dog and pocketing all that money the groomer was getting out of you!
Down and Dirty Tips for Bathing Your Dog At Home

Shampoo:

Make sure you choose the right shampoo before you start. Do not use your own shampoo as it has different pH levels that are not good for your dog. Instead, ask your vet or the folks at the pet store what they recommend. Also remember to get a bath tool to help get through those mats or clumps of hair.

Preparation:

My daughter hates to get water in her ears, so she wears ear plugs when she is swimming as well as in the shower. Dogs are not big fans of getting water in their ears either, so place a small amount of cotton in your pup’s ear before you get the water running. Brushing your dog before you shampoo them help distribute the shampoo more evenly and makes it easier to get them nice and clean.

Towels:

Make sure you have plenty of towels when you are bathing your dog. You will want 2-3 towels to keep yourself from getting soaked and the dog nice and dry. Dogs need to have traction when they are getting a bath, so use a towel in the tub or a non-skid bath mat. Use one towel as a “cape” to keep them from shaking their water all over you. The other towel is the drying towel to get them dry after the asking occurs.

Water:

Dogs actually do not like the sound of running water, so full the tub before you put them in. Be sure to have nice warm water for them as they hate their water too cold or too hot.

So, nowundefined you have all the tips, tools and tricks you need to get your pooch nice and clean. What are we missing here? How about your comfort when you are bathing your dog? There is nothing worse when you are bathing your dog in the tub than to lean over and get that shower track in the ribs. OUCH! Well, with the new Sterling Prevail shower door with its ComforTrack technology, you and your rib cage can bathe your dog in comfort. The flexible bottom track supports the shower door’s glide, making for an easier and safer day-to-day use for you and your family. The Sterling shower doors with ComforTrack technology  is just what you need for shower!
 undefined
The ComforTrack’s cushioned threshold bends when pressure is appliedergo allowing you to kneel, sit, or lean on the track. This makes it so much easier to bathe your child or a pet, access your shower, or clean the bathing/showering space. My kids are into sports, which means they can get pretty sweaty and grubby. This equates to lots of baths and showers. I need to know the shower track is not only flexible, but durable as well. The heavy duty material of the ComforTrack has been put through rigorous testing, so you know it will outlast the day-to-day wear and tear my family can put it through. What’s more, the track features a low profile and sleek shape that is easy to keep clean. This innovation is truly a win-win for today’s homeowner!  Share your dog bathing tips in the comments!

10 Fun Bear Facts

Bears are awesome. Seriously awesome. We fell in love with them watching the Disneynature Bears movie when it came out… and now we love watching and learning more and more about these amazing creatures.  They are the largest carnivore of the land mammals and look like they are the cuddliest. How can one animal look so adorable on second and ferocious the next? Bears have fascinated people for thousands of years from polar bears to grizzlies to panda bears. Here are a few fun bear facts for you to wow your friends with this year around the campfire.

Fun Bear Facts

10 Fun Bear Facts

  1. No wonder bears can handle the cold; they have two layers of fur. The longer outer layer reflects water away and the short layer under each keeps the bear toasty warm.
  2. Sun bears have the longest tongues of any bear measuring at 9.8” long!
  3. A hibernating bear’s heart rate is 8bpm whereas normally it is at 40bpm.
  4. Black bears come in a rainbow of colors from light brown to reddish brown (cinnamon) to even white.
  5. When bears mate, the eggs stay inside the female’s body fertilized, but do not implant in her uterus until the fall. While she is hibernating the babies are growing. She wakes up, gives birth and they nurse for a couple months before ever stepping foot outside the bear cave.
  6. After a female bear mates she then has sex with as many bears as she can find. Since bears will not kill the young of a female bear they have mated with, she wants to make sure they all think they are the baby daddy.
  7. A polar bear’s stomach can hold 150 pounds of meat!
  8. Polar bears are the only bears that are true carnivores. All other bears love fruits and flowers, which makes them omnivores.
  9. A panda bear can eat up to 45 pounds of bamboo a day.
  10. 98% of the Grizzly Bear population lives in Alaska

4 Tips to Keep Your Pet Happy and Nourished

Like with many of the millions of pet owners worldwide, I want my pet to be as happy and well fed as possible. This can be a tricky balance, especially if you have finicky cats who live most of their life indoors. Just like people, cats can go a little stir crazy if you keep them inside, so you need to entertain them as you would your own child (well, so to speak.) Here are just 4 ways to keep your pet happy:

keep-pet-happy-nourished

4 Tips to Keep Your Pet Happy and Nourished

1. Go For a Walk:

If you have indoor cats like I do, you cannot exactly take them outside for a walk, right? Well, not necessarily. There are leashes for cats and you can walk them in safe areas near your home. If this does not appeal to you, a screened in porch or sun room will give them a sense of being outdoors while being safe inside. Our cat… well, Rosie isn’t one of the kitties who will walk on a leash. We have several in town who will- some of them even come to watch soccer and baseball games their humans are playing!

cat-on-leash

2. Play with Them:

Cats love to play, so find some cat toys and get on the floor and have some fun with your feline friend. You can even make your own cat toys out of common household items like string and a cardboard toilet paper roll.

cat playing

3. Let Them Climb:

You do not want your cat climbing on your furniture, so get them something they can climb and scratch on. A cat climbing tree or pet condo is an excellent investment in your cat’s happiness.

4. Feed Them Well:

Feeding your cat well does not mean feeding them a lot. You need to find the right food that will give them the nourishment they need. My Rosabeth (Rosie) loves the Nutrish Zero Grain pet food from Rachael Ray.

nutrish-toy-bag

I love to watch the Rachael Ray show with my second cup of morning coffee. She has the best recipes and guests and I love her heart as well. She loves animals and her line of pet foods shows just that. Rachael created the Nutrish line in 2007 with the help of pet nutrition experts. She started with her ultra-premium food and treats for dogs and last year the line expanded to cat food.

nutrish in bowl

The Nutrish line has exactly what you would want for your pet; simple natural ingredients with no meat or poultry, by-product meal or fillers and no artificial preservatives, colors or flavors. Real meat is the #1 ingredient in the Nutrish cat food and all recipes were inspired by Rachael’s kitchen. My cat took to the Zero Grain Whitefish Dry Cat Food very well. I think she knew it was good for her! I just slowly mixed it with her previous food over a ten day period, when she was eating the Nutrish 100%.

With the Zero Grain Whitefish & Potato Recipe, real whitefish is the #1 ingredient, is a tasty and highly digestible protein that promotes strong muscles and helps minimize litter box odors. Another great reason to buy the Nutrish brand is because Rachael’s personal proceeds go to Rachael’s Rescue, which was created to help shelter pets. So far, over $9 million has gone toward food, medical supplies and treatments for animals in need. You can find the Nutrish foods and treats at your local grocery store, as well as mass retailers like Target, Walmart and Amazon. Be sure to stay connected with Nutrish and follow them on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

5 Cool Ways Kids Can Help Homeless Pets

I’m going on a field trip with my Junior Girl Scout troop to Our Companions to learn about homeless pets and ways we can help them.  My girls all love animals and we’re going on this field trip as part of the process to earn their Bronze Award for Scouts- their chosen service project is making feral cat shelters.  Last year, the girls did a pet drive and collected food, bedding, old sheets and towels to donate to the Humane Society.  Kids tend to love animals, and finding ways to encourage them to give back and do for others is always a great thing.

5 Cool Ways Kids Can Help Homeless Pets

Does your child dream of being a vet? Or having a big house with all kinds of animals? Or is she always begging for more pets, even though you already have a houseful? If so, check out your local animal shelter to find out what kind of programs they offer for kids.

You, like many parents, might be surprised at the many types of programs that animal shelters offer for kids of all ages, from preschool to elementary school to teenagers.

There are plenty of big and small ways that animal-loving kids can get involved and give back to the community. Here are just a few.

Make DIY Toys and Beds

Animal shelters are always in need of toys and beds. There are lots of fun DIY projects your kids can do to help. Cats love wand toys, for example. Or, your child can make a dog bed from a large piece of fleece material. Some shelters like to use ping-pong balls for toys.  Your child can decorate a bunch of them with a Sharpie and deliver them to the shelter for some kitten playtime. Be sure to check with your local group to find out what they can use and then get to work!

Hold a Supplies Drive

Your child can hold a supplies drive at his school or in the neighborhood to collect things that neighbors may not need but the shelter can use, like old sheets and towels. Some shelters love to make toys for their animals using empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls. Some collect milk jug caps (cats love to play with these!) Still others make fun toys out of empty plastic water bottles. These are all things your child can collect from friends, neighbors and family without asking for a dime!

Sign up For Camps

Camps are a big focus for some animal shelters. The camp options range from preschool camps to teen “vet” camps where participants get to observe (and sometimes assist with!) real work in the shelter’s clinic.  Some shelters offer camps for summer, spring break and over the winter holidays, too.

Celebrate a Birthday

Forget bounce houses or fancy tea parties! Have your kid’s next birthday party at an animal shelter! Some shelters host super fun birthday parties that create a memorable event for guests and helps the shelter in return. For a fee, a shelter will throw the party, provide exciting animal-related activities and let the kids meet some of the resident animals. Guests can bring food or supply donations and everyone leaves the party feeling…well, warm and fuzzy.

Sponsor a Pet

Many organizations allow donors to sponsor a specific pet while he is in the shelter’s care. This is a fun and unique way for your child to see the impact that giving can make. Work with your child to set aside money from her allowance to donate to the care of the pet. Visit the pet at the shelter, draw a picture of the pet to hand on his cage and keep in touch with the shelter about the pet’s adoption status. Then, celebrate together when the pet you helped finds his forever home!

crayons and collars

The types of programs available at shelters vary. To find out if there’s a kids’ program near you, check out Crayons & Collars, which just launched a nationwide round up of shelters offering kids’ programs. http://www.crayonsandcollars.com/shelter-programs-for-kids-2/

And if your local organization doesn’t have kids’ programs, consider starting one! That’s a great way to contribute to the shelter and your community as a whole, all the while giving your little Dr. Doolittle something meaningful to pursue.

Make Your Holiday Shopping Count: Show You Care With We-Care

When the time allows, which is not often, I love to settle in and watch a little TV. Hey! It is cheap entertainment, right?! For 30 minutes or even a few hours, I get to lose myself in my favorite shows. If you like to keep up with what is going on in Hollywood, Access Hollywood Live with Kit Hoover and Billy Bush, is the show to watch! With their irreverent style and sense of humor, the duo keeps you current with what is going on with your favorite celebrity. When she is not sharing the latest scoop in the entertainment biz or cooking with celebrity chefs, Kit Hoover likes to hang out with her husband, kids and their menagerie of rescue animals. The Hoover’s have a guinea pig named Dr. Disco Bubbles, two cats, Prince Harry and Button, and a bunny named Pickles the bunny. Next on Kit’s list of rescue animals to add to the family is a dog. This post is sponsored by our friends at ASPCA. Opinions and love of our furry friends are our own.

For this reason, Kit agreed to work with the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), on a unique online partnership. If you are not familiar with the ASPCA, they are the first animal welfare organization in North America. With over 2 million supporters, they are also the nation’s leading voice for animals. The ASPCA is a national leader in the areas of anti-cruelty, community outreach and animal health services. For the month of December, you can give back to the ASPCA through your online purchases, with no money out of your own pocket. What a great way to give back and show you care by participating in the We-Care campaign.

Getting rid of pet hair #NeatoVacuumBestForPets #Giveaway

The word chaos does not even begin to describe my home at times. Especially in the winter, when we are all confined to the indoors for a large majority of our time. Don’t get me wrong, I love every minute of it…. But I also often find myself dreaming of cloning myself. Just one extra me would go along ways in helping me to maintain my sanity.

I find myself running behind the kids and their various friends throughout the day reminding them to clean up after themselves in an effort to keep the house tidy. Then, as much as my children are running around leaving things behind, my pets seem to jump right in and pick up where the children left off! Those are a bit harder to chastise for not being neat and tidy. Especially when the problem is shedding, something they can’t easily control.Getting rid of pet hair is one of my biggest challenges!

Then… there was a Neato Robot Vacuum.

The Neato Robot Vacuum is seriously the “Best for Pets“. Not just because I said it, (although come on, you guys!) but because they’ve also won numerous awards titling them as just that! Not only does the Neato keep floors neat and tidy… it’s hands free and effortless! No more daily floor cleaning with standard vacuums or sweeping with brooms… the Neato handles that for you.

How does it work?

You pick the time and date and schedule when you’d like the Neato to clean, or use the one button start. When it’s time, it moves around your house picking up debris. The Neato actually learns your house! It uses laser mapping and laser guided navigation to do this. It also includes boundary markers/sensors to protect pet bowls, stairs, and your important valuables.

The wide suction area and edge cleaning brushes can be used for through clean. The stealthy vacuum can also easily maneuver under furniture, around corners, and the square edge gets in corners and hard to reach spots!

This vacuum literally saves hours a month! It’s the next best thing to having a full time maid! And guess what happens when it’s done cleaning? The Neato Robot Vacuum just returns itself right to it’s base to recharge! How “neat” is that (see what I did there?).

What room could you use a Neato in?

Be sure to check out the Neato Robot Vacuums “Best for Pets” pet-friendly webpage dedicated to providing pet shedding resources, tips and even a Pet Shedding Solutions Guide featuring content from PetMD and Pet360.

Parsley Carrot Dog Treats Recipe

Tobey’s 13 1/2. He gets spoiled more and more as he gets older. I won’t apologize for it. He deserves it. That includes homemade treats!!  Check out this quick and easy dog treats recipe the kids love to make for Tobey :)

Parsley Carrot Dog Treats

parsley-carrot-potato-chips-dogs

Ingredients

1 bunch of fresh parsley, finely chop the entire bunch, including stems

⅓ cup grated carrots (one large carrot, or two small ones)

2 ½ cups flour

¼ cup grated cheddar cheese

2 tbsp cooking oil

1 ½ tsp baking powder

½ cup water

parsley-carrot-chips-ingredients
Directions

In a large bowl combine the fresh parsley, grated cheese and carrots. Drizzle the cooking oil over the fresh ingredients and toss so that everything is coated.

In a small bowl combine flour and baking powder and mix well. Slowly add the flour mixture to the fresh ingredients, tossing the entire time so that the flour coats everything without clumping.

Once everything has been combined, slowly add the water a couple spoonfuls at a time to the mixture, tossing everything. Once all the water has been added the dough will resemble wet mush, just make sure that all the dough is wet and there is no remaining dry flour.

parsley-chips-mix

Lightly grease a mini baking cup tray. Spoon the dog treat mixture into each cup, keeping the amount just below the top of the tray because they rise very slightly. Bake in the oven at 350 F for 25 minutes.

If you have a larger dog you can use a regular sized cupcake tray and cook at the same temperature for 30 minutes.

Allow biscuits to cool before serving. Treats can be refrigerated for 2 weeks, or frozen for up to 3 months.
