So let’s talk about our bathroom habits, shall we? #LetsTalkBums #ad

This is a sponsored post about bathroom habits written by me on behalf of Cottonelle.Tracking Pixel

And no, I’m not talking about brushing our teeth, friends.  Little um…*ahem* lower.

You know, down there.

I realized recently I’ve clearly failed in the teaching of all the bathroom habits in this house. Not for everyone, but trust me when I tell you that the whole notion of having clean tissue sightings after a bowel movement has evaded multiple people who reside in this house.

And that’s not good. Really, it’s sad.  And bad. And leaves me feeling less than glad.

Because what happens in the bathroom needs to stay in the bathroom.

what-happens-in-the-bathroom

And here you were, thinking ERMAGHERD she’s totally not going to talk about the wiping of the bum and poo, not Brett, not on the internet?!

But I am.

Because….as that book tells us,

Everyone Poops.

Which means everyone wipes. Or should.

But they don’t always excel at wiping. I mean, you really have to be thorough when you wipe.

Plus there’s always those “out of the ordinary” situations that leave you wondering if things will ever be cleaned up down there, and what to do with all the tissue.

Deep breaths.

I’m done talking about poo.   Today we’re going to focus on the removal of the evidence from all parts of your person.

Many families who have small children have baby wipes around.  That’s all nice, and we are in that cloud, but come ON.  I’m 39 years old.  I think I can handle a little something more than a baby wipe.  Besides- I keep those in the car to wipe hands and to get coffee spills of my shirt.  (No joke.  A few brands of wipes are equally effective at removing minor stains from shirts. Try them). In my bathroom?  I need a little something more.

#letstalkaboutbums

We’ve grown accustomed to having wet wipes available for so many things in our lives nowadays.  It’s only logical that we’d have them to use in the bathroom- and really, isn’t that one of the areas we want to be as clean as clean can be?  With Cottonelle’s Cleansing Cloths, we can have a clean, happy bottom every time we use the loo.  The Cleansing Cloths come in a nice discreet container that will blend in any decor scheme.  I’m finding I want to actually get some fun fabric and mod podge and have some fun making it look awesome!

letstalkaboutbums-brand-image

Speaking of the “loo,” you may have noticed Cherry Healey, a journalist from the UK.  She’s funny and she’s come “across the pond” to talk about bums with us.  Yes, she’s here in the USA to talk about our bathroom routines and why we should be using cleansing cloths.  I find her hilarious- but I’m partial to British humor anyway.  Keep an eye out, or search around the internet for the #LetsTalkAboutBums hashtag- you’ll see lots and lots of Cherry’s wisdom and humor!  More importantly- you’ll also see a little bit more about the WHY we need to revamp our bathroom habits and start using wipes and cleansing cloths.

Cottonelle wants to get you talking about your bum and on a better way to clean “down there” by using the Cottonelle Clean Routine. By combining the use of Cottonelle Toilet Paper and Cottonelle Flushable Cleansing Cloths, the Cottonelle Clean Routine is a revolutionary way to keep your bum cleaner.

Are you ready? Don’t be shy! Visit http://www.facebook.com/cottonelle to learn more about the Cottonelle Clean Routine and join the clean routine conversation.

Vegan For Her Book Review

The publishers at DaCapo sent me a copy of Vegan for Her, written by Virginia Messina with JL Fields, to review.  The subtitle is The Woman’s Guide to Being Healthy and Fit on a Plant-Based Diet One thing that jumped right out at me is that the author states that the book does not need to be read cover to cover but rather stick to the sections that are relevant to your needs.  Most chapters are written so that if you read them alone, they have all the information you need on that topic. The book covers topics like, Healthy Eating for All Times Of A Woman’s Life and Fighting Pain with Plants.  The book also emphasizes that eating a plant-based diet should not cause stress and anxiety. The book includes over 50 recipes including Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner AND Dessert!  I really enjoyed reading this book and I know I will refer back to it often.  At the top of my list of recipes to try are the Coconut-Gingered Black Bean Brownies.  Yum!!

Vegan For Her book review

Vegan for Her is a guide to meeting the unique needs of vegan women, with recipes and practical information for optimal health at every stage of a woman’s life.  In Vegan for Her, dietitian Virginia Messina tackles the issues most pertinent to women who follow or who are considering a vegan diet, and JL Fields provides health-supportive recipes and tips for taking your veganism beyond the plate. My Little Pony is growing up with Equestria Girls (2 winner #giveaway)

This is a sponsored post about the My Little Pony Equestria Girls line of dolls.  Opinions are my own. Growing up, I loved My Little Pony everything.  I think that they came in third only to my Annie wig and my Cabbage Patch Kid doll.  The ponies were different- I could do so much with them including brush their hair.  They were smaller in size than a doll, so I could bring them wherever I went much easier. A few ponies and some imagination and I could fill an afternoon.  My older daughter likes MLP but hasn’t fallen in love with them.  My little one, who just turned 4? She adores MLP.  Tshirts, underwear, mini ponies,  regular ponies, videos…and to her delight…the new Equestria Girls line.

Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer arrived at our house the other evening, packaged together in one box.  Each has her own sense of style and comes with a few accessories.  There’s only one girl who can be crowned Fall Formal Princess, and only one crown in the box…your little one gets to decide who wins the title and the crown. The kids have been enjoying Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle together- they were immediately “best friends” and have been marrying all of brother’s action figures (Iron Man is quite the catch, who knew?)

(Please note- when my 8 year old says something is creepy, it’s a GOOD thing!)

Futures at Fenway with Kidz Bop

A few weeks ago we were invited to visit Fenway Park in Boston for a fun day of watching Baseball and Kidz Bop for the Futures at Fenway program.   We got to see Boston’s Double A affiliate, the Portland Seadogs play against the Harrisburg Senators.  The Seadogs won with a final score of 5-2.

Futures at Feway park

We had great seats behind home plate and loaded up on hot dogs, peanuts, pretzels and cotton candy.  It was a gorgeous day at a historic and cool ball field.  This was the first time in the history of Fenway Park that they allowed dogs in the park, we even saw one man carrying his cat.

Fenway Park Seadogs

The game was followed by a Kidz Bop concert and then we spent a couple of hours walking up Newbury Street and at Faneuil Hall.  It was really a great family day.

kidz bop at fenway

Keep your eye out for more Futures at Fenway days.  It was a really great experience for us and we would go again.  Futures at Fenway gives families a really affordable way to visit the park– ticket prices are just $5-30 for the event and all concessions are half off.  That’s a huge savings!  It also lets the Double A affiliate teams have a chance to play in the park as well.  This year, dogs were invited (with a signed release/waiver at the entrance) to enjoy the event as well.  We’ll be going next summer as a group with friends- won’t you join us?

Checking In: See how we like our cheap wireless plan

Remember, about a month ago I shared that we were checking out the Walmart Family Mobile plan with the Concord phone and the cheap wireless plan? Well, it’s been long enough that hubby (as well as me, and the 8 year old) have been able to play around and use the phone to really see what we think of the plan.  The verdict: we love it. It may not have the most bells and whistles of some other smartphones that cost 5-6 times as much, but it has the bells and whistles we USE and need.

My husband is able to send photos to us while he’s on the road- so when he sees something really cool, instead of  just describing it over dinner, and trying to share the image from a teeny tiny flip phone, he can send it immediately. Like last week, he caught about 20 blue crabs- he was able to tell not just tell us but also SHOW us…and I was able to get the grill set up to cook the crabs. (Which is the absolute end of my involvement with the crabs).

concord-tmobile-smartphone-unlimited-plans-familymobilesaves

I have to admit right now that yes I did add myself into the phone contacts. Just in case you were wondering. 😉

When he’s home, my 8 year old has taken over this phone. She loves to text.  We don’t let her text many folks, but we have let her text family members.  She’s also been known to text me if I am up in my room or she’s down in the basement with my husband.  But she’s also able to text her daddy from my phone when he’s at work and check in or tell him something that happened- the two of them are thick as thieves and that’s been great for both of them.  My son has been playing around taking photos to send via text or just to surprise his dad with….

familymobilesaves-tmobile-affordable-smartphone-plans

We’re also in the process of redoing a room in our home- and now my husband is able to compare prices or send me links because he has a phone with a data plan.  He was at a business, loved their flooring, asked where it was from and was able to send me the link to check out within 5 minutes.  That’s not something that we’d have been able to do before.

walmart-family-mobile-unlimited-plans-no-contract-familymobilesaves

Having the ability to keep in touch and be able to search online for things with a smartphone has been wonderful for my husband (and for me).  Even just for being able to search for where a place IS or a phone number makes me feel better if he’s far from home.  He likes being able to look stuff up himself and not have to call home to ask me to look something up.

The service rollback available from Walmart Family Mobile is still available, $39.88 unlimited talk, text and web and $29.88 unlimited talk and text- pair that with the great phone prices Concord (is $79.88 – was $99.88)  and MyTouch devices (is $129.88 – was $149.88) and no contract? That’s a win in my book!  Online account management and information is available 24/7 on the Family Mobile website.  Hint: Grab it now while there’s a rollback! Give it a try!  I think you may like it.

I think the thing my hubby is most excited about, besides finally having a personal phone…is that he can get the ‘extras’ option and be able to download his own ringtones.  Having a cheap wireless plan for us means we can splurge and do some fun things like get a few ringtones- not something we’d normally do.  I like the peace of mind.

Walmart Family Mobile is not available in all areas yet– although it is available widely (not as available in the west).  It’s a GREAT option if you want a smartphone without paying the really high rates, having to sign a contract, and spend money on unlimited plans that aren’t actually unlimited.  We’re really happy we discovered this service and will be continuing for at least 3 more months (we like to try service for a few months to get a really thorough experience with a product like this). Signal strength is fair in our house, better outside (which is how most service plans are in my area) but signal is great in most of Connecticut and most of Mass which is where my husband travels for work all the time, and where he uses the phone the most. I do see that they are rolling out some 4g service throughout 2013 so I think that the Walmart Family Mobile plans and service will get better, better and better with wider coverage.

Now, I’m off to give the kids more fun ideas of photos to take on daddy’s phone.  He forgot it at home today and, well, we like to have some fun. I think we’ll add some photos to all of his contacts.

Be sure to look around online and see how others are liking the Walmart Family Mobile plan- just watch for the #FamilyMobileSaves hashtag!!

Pretty Poppies for Back to School ($100 Gymboree Giveaway)

This post about Pretty Poppies for Back to School is brought to you by our fashion forward friends at Gymboree.  I don’t even think I have a lot to SAY about these pieces- I think the photos kind of speak for themselves.  Gymboree is known for quality clothing that comes in lines that mix, match and coordinate to your heart’s content.  My oldest chose this Pretty Poppies outfit specifically SO she and her little sister could match for back to school and I think she did a great job choosing pieces.

gymboree-pretty-poppies-line-kids-fashion

You can see that my little one has some growing to do before these fit her really well, but thanks to adjustable waist jeans, she can wear them now with no issues.  They will fit better length wise when she actually wears shoes, but hey, it’s August and we’re not back at school and the only person who wears shoes consistently in our family is my husband.

Speaking of shoes, both girls are upset that I didn’t order the adorable and glittery navy ballet flats that go with this outfit.  I promise you I would have but honestly? I couldn’t afford to include EVERYTHING! I did notice they ARE on sale when I was looking for the link to the outfit so they may just show up at the front door in the next week or so.  They really truly would be the perfect way to finish off this outfit!

gymboree-back-to-school-girls-fashion-poppy-collage

I am amazed that my 8 year old is wearing jeans- and willingly.  She’s NOT a jeans girl.  But these are nice and soft, plus adjustable waist, and how can you not love the poppies on the bottom?  Too cute.  The seam that goes down the legs just gives the jeans a little extra bit of fun and she loves that.  The over-the-top-cute patent leather bow belt was a must for her.  We did not get the belt for my 4 year old because, well, she’s still learning to undo snaps on her pants and she waits way too long as it is to go to the bathroom. We dont’ need any obstacles in her way.

Little sis got the bracelet (pictured above) in lieu of the belt.  Actually, she got 2 bracelets, because my older daughter declared that it was too tight and doesn’t fit. (So there you go.  The bracelet runs small). My little one is the accessory girl in our house anyway, so she’s happy to wear 2 or 20 bracelets, necklaces and anything else she can put on her little person.

gymboree-tween-fashion-pretty-poppies

One of the things I love the very most about Gymboree is of course that they make a great quality product, which means I’m getting my money’s worth, but also…at the end of the day, they stay true to the idea that they are making clothes and fashion FOR KIDS and they design the clothes to be played in.  Sometimes I find brands forget that kids move and climb and jump and cartwheel and however else they want to move and aren’t just sitting at a desk or in a magazine shoot.  Gymboree does not forget.  My girls were MORE than happy to strike a bunch of poses to show just how much you CAN do with their fabulous new outfits.

gymboree-pretty-poppies-size4-collage

So, now that you’ve decided that you want your children dressed just like my girls for back to school….or maybe not (…although I won’t be upset if you decide to tell me how darling they are or how cute they look.  I really won’t.), who wants to win a gift card to spend for back to school or whatever else you’d like???

Kids Fashion and Play combine with Hello Kitty and #KuKeeApp

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign about kids fashion with Pollinate Media Group™ and KuKee, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #KuKeeapp  http://cmp.ly/3/8vNxcO.

hello-kitty-kukee-bumpy-bridge

One thing my girls both love and adore is Hello Kitty.  Anything and everything with the fabulous Hello Kitty gets an enthusiastic thumbs up from them (and, well, me).  We love it.  When I first heard that there was a fun app that had an interactive component that included Hello Kitty clothes for girls, I had to jump at the chance to check it out. I mean, it’s Hello Kitty.

So off we Martins went to Macy’s at our local mall, to discover the Hello Kitty line by Evy of CA…which is the product line you can scan with the KuKee app and make your own Hello Kitty magic happen.

Not just scan and play, but REALLY play.  Literally.  The adorable sweatshirt is awesome alone but when you but it, it comes with a superb little HK finger puppet.

hello-kitty-kukee-label-scan

Using this app is really quite simple.

1. Download

2. Scan a KuKee marker

3. Take some photos

4. Check out the collection of items available

kukee-app-hello-kitty-puppet-show

Get ready to unlock the fun with KuKee – an outrageously, fun portal that activates unique augmented reality experiences.

KuKee is an awesome adventure of cool new content, fun user-experiences and zany attitude.

It’s simple – download the app (it’s free!), find the marker/label (the marker is ON the garments….), aim the scanner to activate, and the fun comes to life!

It’s KuKee time! Unlock the fun!

hello-kitty-kukee-puppet-bush

The hair clip is from The Bowtique– many of you have asked about it today, it’s called the White Kitty Clip.

Other items in the collection have tattoo finger puppets- and yes just like you’d think, you apply the temporary HK finger puppet tattoos to her little fingers and she can put on shows to her heart’s content.  Take my advice- do NOT apply these just before going out side to play.  I’d recommend the tattoos on a rainy, inside or generally more quiet day- we were playing outside and taking photos for the post and within moments the tattoos rubbed off.  Lesson learned, and now we know- save the tattoos for a rainy day, so they don’t rub off.  Here are the tattoos before we went outside- aren’t they just ADORABLE?!

hello-kitty-kukee-evy-finger-puppet-tattoos

and mere minutes later…

hello-kitty-kukee-dont-play-outside

Totally not anyone’s fault but my own.  Just learn from us. :)

There’s a lot of pink in the entire Evy by CA Hello Kitty line at Macy’s that you can check out- it was a very long and thorough process for my 4 year old to decide on the right pieces for her new outfit.  (Plus, we had a gift card to buy things, and I wasn’t going over…or at least, I meant to NOT go over…things happen…)  There’s also a lot of grey, and black.  There’s lots of pieces and styles to let your little HK fan look sweet and adorable like my little one, but there’s also trendier options for girls who don’t want to look, well, like a little girl. The skirt she chose was a MUST have.  (It’s also avail in a black with HK heads all over it, but she just loved the pink and wasn’t leaving without it)  I think it was the whole package with this skirt- it’s full, it’s twirly, it has HK all over it…and…its pink.

hello-kitty-kukee-finger-puppet-bluerail

hello-kitty-girls-fashion-kukee-finger-puppet

I see other licenses on the Evy site and I can’t wait to see what comes next to check out with the KuKee app.  What a fun concept- and what a GREAT way to keep kids busy and entertained when they are shopping with mom or dad!!

hello-kitty-kids-fashion-macys-kukeeapp

If When you download the KuKee app, the folks at Evy of CA would love to see pics of your little ones on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook!

Being prepared for anything- even bears and zombies #ReebokMoms

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Reebok about being prepared. I received a Famous Footwear gift card to purchase a pair of Reebok shoes to facilitate my review and to thank me for participating.

You know, I’ve seen a trend for a while about being prepared, emergency preparedness.  Don’t get me wrong, I totally agree that there are essentials for preparedness.  First aid items?  Absolutely!  Drinking water?  Yes, and really, DUH.  People can’t live without water.  Food supplies that won’t spoil? Absolutely!  But what I’m NOT seeing is all of the things you need to prepare for besides, well, things to sustain life.

For instance….what are you going to DO to pass the time?  I totally think that pencils, pencil sharpeners, paper and some puzzle books should be part of emergency preparedness.  Probably a few decks of cards. Being prepared isn’t just all of the necessities.

But not just for emergencies, you also need to be prepared in every day life.  In our family, we have fully stocked first aid kits in all of our vehicles.  When I say fully stocked I mean that my husband really truly wants us prepared for EVERYTHING so without an actual sterile operating room, if you get a boo-boo and I’m nearby, I can probably get you fixed up in the back of my van.

run-from-zombies

If you have children, you understand what I mean when I say that going out into public with kids means that you have to be prepared in a whole other sense of the word.  It’s not just about an extra set of clothes or diapers.  Nothing screams urgent situation like a hungry kid and a mom who has no snacks in the diaper bag and forgot her wallet.  Preparedness includes non-perishable on the go snacks that don’t make a huge mess, and also, small toys that are able to entertain small children for periods of time without making a ton of noise.  This is not an easy feat.  (Hey, here I was talking about feet, and now I’m saying feat….see what I did there?)  For real, though.  I have a small airtight container with some granola-type bars in it and other long-lasting snack foods right there by the first aid kit.  You NEVER KNOW.

Since I’m going to have to start fresh with the whole couch potato to finish perky walking (others may call it a snail’s pace jog, but I’m not others), I have to prepare for that. I need to prepare with proper footwear for the “running” I’ll be doing. I want for my feet to look happy.  Pink makes me happy.  Naturally, I look for running shoes with pink on them. Please note: I’d look for shoes in the “perky walker” category but apparently, that’s not actually a sport nor a footwear style.  So I’ll stick to running.  HOWEVER.  I’m sure if I was ever in these shoes and say, a bear started to chase me, I might be able to RUN and by run I mean R-U-N and maybe even fast, so I want to be prepared. So having cute sneakers?  Double preparation.  Both for the training program for the get-healthy-and-lose-some-weight and also in the run-for-your-life category.

Also something to prepare for? Zombies.  <Aren’t they supposed to come with the apolcolypse or something?>  Seems to me that if we are going to be working to get away from zombies, we may need some sturdy footwear. Thankfully, places like Famous Footwear offer all kinds of shoes in a variety of styles and colors to help you prepare for anything that may come your way on- and off-  the road.  If a zombie is going to chase me, I either want to have shoes that will help me run – FAST- or I want to at least have them look cute while I’m caught.  (Speaking of zombies, there IS a zombie run coming to the Hartford area in a month or two…who wants to go with me?)

Thankfully, I now have some nice, quality fall/winter shoes that I can safely navigate the mall and some terrain AND some SUPER cute Reebok running shoes….and I suppose I should log off and go work on actually being able to run.  I’m excited about my new shoes. Back to school shopping is fun and all but it’s also fun for MOM to get a little something new.  And hey, if I use the time when the kids are in school to get into shape and start running, when the zombies come….I’ll be good to go…and go….and go.  Away from bears, and zombies…and the school….

run-from-zombies-with-reebok-famous-footwear-reebokmom

So I ask…can YOUR shoes help you run from zombies? Mine can!

Make your laptop a touch screen laptop with APEN Touch 8

Surely I am not the only person who is so used to touch screen tablets and phones that I find myself trying to touch the screen on my laptop….only to remember that oh hey! this isn’t a touch screen laptop.  I mean, you expect kids to do it, but not adults, right? Sadly, I usually don’t realize for a few moments and attempts to use my finger that I am on my laptop.  It’s almost embarassing (but if you can’t embarass yourself on the internet, where can you embarass yourself?) but also probably not that uncommon.  When E fun  asked if I’d do a review of their new APEN Touch 8 pen, I was eager to check it out and enjoy new technology but also stop embarassing myself.  Seriously. You’d think I’d remember!

apen-touch-pen

The APEN Touch 8 works with any laptop or pc that has Windows 8 installed and are less than 17 inches.  It’s super, super simple to use- plug it in and play.  The instructions are really user friendly and assembling the pen (battery and ink refill) take a moment of time and you are ready to go.  I was really amazed at how quickly we had this up and running.  There’s a slim magnetic strip with a sticker back that you can attach to the side of your laptop and that’s where you can “store” the pen when not in use.

apen-touch-windows-attach

Once you are plugged in you are ready to play!  I’ve used this pen, the kids have, and even my husband was impressed with it.  This says a lot, because he hates touch screens- says his fingers are too big and he gets frustrated quickly.  The pen gave him kind of the best of both worlds- he can use the pen but have the freedom of a touch screen in lieu of keyboarding.

apen-windows-pen-in-use

See it in progress? Pretty cool, right?

apen-touch-pen-windows-pen

Navigating your laptop isn’t all that APEN Touch 8 can help with- writing emails, signing documents (I was JUST talking with a few bloggers about how we have to do this so often with contracts and invoicing, etc!), and even draw!  It’s a pretty neat little device and for all that it can do, I think it’s priced really reasonably.

If you, like us, don’t have the budget or desire to upgrade to a touch screen laptop or PC, then the APEN Touch 8 may very well be a great option for you to try.

Coastal.com Eyewear Review

Coastal.com Eyewear has a great Get Your First Pair Free program.  In addition to my first pair, they sent me another pair to try out.  I have always wanted to have more than one style of eyeglasses to wear but eyeglasses can be expensive.  All I had to do was get an eye exam at my local eye doctor and use my new prescription to order two new fun styles of eyeglasses.

Coastal.com eyeglasses

You can do the same, just head on over to Coastal.com and start browsing all the modern and flattering eyeglasses.  But, before you totally fall in love with a pair make sure they are from the Get Your First Pair Free selections.  They have over 300 styles to choose from so you are bound to find something you like.  They have brands like Lucky, Nicole Miller and more.  Once you find the pair you like click continue and you are on your way to a new pair of glasses.  You enter your own prescription and it most likely will not have your PD (pupil distance).  This is easy enough to measure with a ruler.  The website has easy to use instructions.  Here comes a slight twist, the frames are free but there is a charge for the lenses, if you are getting single vision standard lenses it will be $29.95 or $39.95.  Progressive lenses or sunglass lenses do cost more.  But, still a much better deal than can be found at a local eyeglass store.

Here are the two styles I choose.

#1  Vintage VN0100 065 Olive Reddish Brown I love plastic frames so these were an easy choice.  I got single vision standard lenses for this pair.

Coastal.com Derik Cardigan glasses firstpairfree

#2 Derek Cardigan 7008 Smoke with progressive lenses.  It has been interesting getting used to wearing progressive lenses but I have to admit my vision is not getting any better.

Coastal.com Vintage FIRSTPAIRFREE glasses

Each pair arrived quickly and they come with a hard shell case, and a cleaning kit with an eyeglass screwdriver.  That is more than most local eyeglass stores will give you.  Overall it was a great shopping experience, I would and I have recommendedit to friends.

Coastal.com Eyeglasses repair and cleaning kit

I received the glasses to help facilitate this review.  All opinions are my own.

Which pair are you going to choose for your First Pair Free?
