Can you believe it is almost time for school to be back in session? I know, neither can I. With this happening, that means winter travel plans are being made across the country. Are you going to travel this year? If so, where are you going and how do you plan to get there? In my family, we do most of our travel via the van. If you are hitting the road (or plane) this year, here are a few tips that will help you manage your travel expenses.

Tips to Plan Your Vacation and Manage Travel Expenses

Itinerary:

There is no way you can go on a trip with your family and not have it planned out. At least not in my house you can’t! Plan ahead as much as you can. Book your hotel, plan for stops along the way (for rest, refueling and sightseeing.)

Hidden Fees:

Avoid those hidden fees along the way. Stay away from the mini bar in the hotel. Warn the kids they are NOT to touch the snacks, sodas or water that has been strategically placed to tempt you. Another hidden cost is the hotel internet, which is usually not free. This can cost you $15 or more per day. I take a hotspot with me- that solves that problem. Be sure the credit or debit or prepaid card you are carrying does not have any hidden fees either.

Food and Drink:

Whenever possible, pack snacks and drinks for both on the road and once you get to the hotel. We always pack a cooler so we have plenty to eat and drink while we are driving. Once we get to the hotel, we stock up the mini fridge as well. Who wants to pay $5 for a bottle of water when we can have one of our own for about 5 cents! I’d much rather bring my own beverages so we have more money for things like baseball games and outings, not overpriced hotel conveniences!

Expenses:

Whether we are traveling for pleasure or business, I keep track of my receipts. I write the reason for each purchase and then I will file them appropriately when we get home. If you use the Prepaid Visa® RushCard, part of the Visa Clear Prepaid program, you can apply for a card account so you can track your expenses whenever you need to. If you set a budget for the trip, as I hope you do, stick to it when you travel. It is super easy to wander off the budget path if you are not careful. When we carry our Prepaid Visa® RushCard, we don’t carry cash, because it’s super convenient to use our prepaid card for many of our purchases.

When you have the Prepaid Visa® RushCard by your side, it is easy to focus on the things that matter when you travel. You know, like having fun, experiencing new things, and bonding with the family! The fees associated with this prepaid card are clearly communicated, so you know when you pay a fee and when you won’t. You can choose from two plans; the plan with a flat monthly fee for those who use their card frequently, and a pay as you go plan for those who seldom or less frequently use their card. Either way, you get peace of mind with prepaid cards that are part of the Visa Clear Prepaid program.

Getting a prepaid card that’s part of the Visa Clear Prepaid program is pretty simple.  You’ll need to sign up for an account with the provider you prefer – check out the options here – (we have the Prepaid Visa® RushCard and found it to be user friendly) and select your card preference (I’m partial to the pinks and sparkles myself)…you can select how you want to load funds to your card, and there may also be a spot to enter any promotional codes. You’ll need to confirm your account, and wait for the card to arrive.  Once your card is in your hands, you can activate and add funds, and go out and enjoy your vacation without worry that you’ll overspend your budget.

Protection: Cards in the Visa Clear Prepaid program provide you with strong consumer protection including:

  • Easy to understand fee plans
  • No overdrafts permitted so you can’t incur fees or spend more money than you have
  • Deposit or share insurance to protect your funds, e.g. FDIC/NCUSIF
  • Visa’s Zero Liability* fraud protection, providing added security if your card is lost or stolen.
  • *Visa’s Zero Liability Policy covers U.S.-issued cards and does not apply to certain commercial card transactions, or any transactions not processed by Visa. You must notify your financial institution immediately of any unauthorized use. For specific restrictions, limitations and other details, please consult your issuer.

  • We always pack our own food for the trip. Especially snacks for when we reach the hotel. Because you are right, the stuff in the hotel is so pricey and just not worth it.

  • We always try to bring our own water too. Nothing worse than spending more on one drink verses buying a whole case for less.
