Sprucing up my bedroom with a little bit of my mom

I had this ugly lamp in my bedroom, on my bedside table.  Given that the phone lives there, and a basket with my must-read books, and whatever assorted items kids bring in, I realized recently, the lamp has to go.  I wasn’t turning it on, I hated it, it was too big for the space, and…well, it was a free lamp that I hated.  I decided to let my guilt go, donate the lamp (another man’s trash, right?) and set out to find an adorable SMALL lamp I could use for middle of the night wakings, etc….or reading.  Whichever, or both.  Of course, I was supposed to be shopping for GE Lighting, so I went over to check out their new light bulbs

I went to Walmart last and actually found an adorable little lamp, but it was kind of…boring.  It needed something.  I decided to bring the lamp home and take a few days to think about what I’d do with it.

Over the weekend, my husband surprised me with a belated birthday gift.  The jewelry chest my mom had, for oh, forever?  (It’s at least 45 years old, she got it when she was stationed in Japan during her Air Force years) The chest that had a bottom drawer that didn’t close for as long as I could remember.  My dad gave this chest to me, right when mom died, and I still to this day haven’t been ready to go through the box.  But this weekend, when my husband took me to the basement to show me he’d fixed it, to surprise me, I was able to open a drawer or two.  I’m definitely still not ready to go through it all, but I did find, in the second drawer I opened, some costume jewelry that just seemed…well, made for my lamp.

So I took that jewelry out, shed some tears, hugged my husband, and said, “I need my glue gun.  Right now.”

Bewildered, he grabbed it for me (we store it up high) and shook his head as I ran up the stairs to assemble supplies.  Cute, boring lamp: Check.  Glue gun: check.  Costume jewelry: Check. Scissors: Check.

My mom’s old costume jewelry has made my mom’s lamp far more personal, less boring, and keeps her close for just a little bit longer.

Isn’t it funny how sometimes, the strange things in life happen just when you need them to?

In honor of my mom’s lifelong love of protecting our earth, I of course had to use a “green” lightbulb – which I found tons of at Walmart (and don’t be sad, you can see ALL of my shopping photos in my Google Plus album) and am trying to change all of our bulbs in the house to greener ones.

What do you think of my boring lamp now? I love it! I also like knowing the bulb I put in there will last several years, if not longer- so I paid a bit more up front, but will have less cost in replacements (don’t have to) and less harm to our earth. Win, win.

I could be saving $177.24 a year just by changing all of our bulbs in the house to energy efficient ones. What would your savings be? http://www.gelighting.com/na/home_lighting/products/pop_lighting_calc.htm

#GELighting Sustainability and Frugal Living with Energy Efficient Light Bulbs #CBias

Living in today’s society often means the use of a lot of resources.  Driving back and forth to activities, to events, charging the many, many electronics we have in our homes…powering these electronics.  Even watching television isn’t simply turning on the television anymore- most of us turn on the television, the cable/satellite box, and maybe even a surround sound system.  That’s a lot of resources, without even touching on the lighting our homes!

We try to live smart and live green in our home.  Sometimes we are successful, sometimes we are not.  But we do try to be conscious of turning off appliances and electronics when they are not in use, and we do make sure to purchase energy efficient products whenever available, even if the cost is greater.  This is the only earth we have to live on, and we feel strongly that we need to take care of it.

Buying and using energy efficient light bulbs is one very easy, super simple step all of us can take to be a little bit greener- with almost no effort.  Sooner or later, our bulbs will die, or be broken…they will need replacing. Why not replace with greener, energy efficient options?

Come join us at the #GELighting Sustainability and Frugal Living with Energy Efficient Light Bulbs TWITTER PARTY on May 31 from 1-2PM EST to chat about green living and energy efficient light bulbs! You can win prizes, and you will probably learn some great tips about ways to live smart and green at the same time!! Won’t you join us?

CookiesKids.com has a lot to offer #LuvCookies #CBias

I have heard of Cookie’s Kids before- but I had no idea what I was missing. I think I’d heard once that it was a site that offered great selection and pricing for school uniforms, and kind of never took the time to explore. I shopped on their site on December 15th, as part of a shopper insights study.

Cookie’s Kids was totally not what I’d expected!! From baby gear to the latest in hot toys, and so much in between, they definitely have lots to offer and should be on parents’ lists for checking when we need to get things for our kids.

There are lots of great name brands on Cookie’s Kids- this isn’t just an off-brand discount site- I saw some fantastic deals on The North Face outerwear items, Levi’s, and more. [click to continue…]

Shopping for Puppy Care Kit Items

A new friend of mine has an adorable little Dalmation puppy.  Today Baby B and I headed to Walmart to check out their selection of puppy treats, toys, neccessities and gift ideas.  We’d attempted this one day last week but the stock was very low at our store so we scrapped the mission and decided to give this a go today.  Given the  holiday season, I anticipated finding some holiday themed goodies, and I wasn’t wrong.  I wanted to create a little puppy care kit for my friend for her pup, and fill it with necessities and frivolities for her little poochie.

I guess because we often make treats for our Tobey that I don’t often check out the aisle where dog treats are- I couldn’t believe how big the variety and selection were!!   Tons of brands, flavors, textures, packaging sizes, and more.  One thing I liked was the range of pricing- you can find treats for very little and gourmet treats for a lot more.  Our local Walmart doesn’t seem to carry Milo’s Kitchen, which I was very disappointed to find, because it was something I specifically was looking to include in my puppy care kit.  Some of the Milk-Bone® Dog Treats boxes had coupons (check your local newspaper the week of December 11 for a money saving coupon on Milk-Bone® Dog Treats!) for $2 off of a Pup-peroni or Milo’s Kitchen purchase but either they were 100% sold out or really just don’t carry this brand!!  I was disappointed, because I wanted to grab some for Tobey’s stocking as well.

The first thing we noticed when we hit the pet department were Angry Birds dog toys.  Now, I know what that is but I’ve never played (and won’t- I know I’ll be hooked right away!!) but I wasn’t sure if my friend does, so we passed on those.  I did snap a photo.  They are fun!!  If you have  an Angry Birds fan in your house, and a pet, definitely worth a look.   [click to continue…]
