“A to Z With You and Me” Review and Giveaway 4/29

Until recently I haven’t allowed my 2 year old to watch much TV. But, now that he is watching a little bit, I am amazed by how much he learns and picks up from shows like Sesame Street. When I was given the opportunity to review A to Z With You and Me, a personalized video dvd for toddlers, I was curious to see what he thought. Needless to say, he LOVED it. From the intro music, straight through the alphabet and personalized pictures, he was engaged. [click to continue…]

Caillou plush doll and toy train (Review)

If you have ever watched PBS Kids or Sprout with your own or other people’s little kids, chances are you are familiar with a little bald 4 year old boy named Caillou who has his very own animated show- and what may possibly the catchiest theme song ever.  (I can hear the notes now just typing this).   Kids love him, and they love the show.  My kids are no exception.  We’ve had a LOT of sick days in my family this winter which has made for a lot of extra television viewing time- including Caillou.  My 3 year old likes to snuggle on my bed with me after big sister gets on the bus for school and little sister goes for her nap- he likes to watch Caillou with me and then we turn off the TV and read some books together before nap.  Its one of the few things that are “ours” together, just him and me, and I love those times.

Fundex Games Review & Snoopy Sno Cone Maker Giveaway (3 winners!) ends 4/15

We play a lot of games, especially lately, with spring  upon us, melting snow, and MUD season.  Kind of hard to do a lot outside when you live where we do- the water table is very high and the ground is just sopping wet.  Its kind of like stepping onto a sponge.

Fundex Games offers a big variety of good, quality, fun family activities.  From the Snoopy Sno Cone Machine to puzzles with moveable parts, you are likely to find something to make just about anyone in your house happy!

Pinkalicious Cupcake Party Game: The Pinkalicious series has hit America by storm and having games to build on the pink-apalooza only makes it more fun.

Players work together to collect cupcakes and fill the tray by performing activities from 4 different categories; charades, dancing, drawing, and rhyming. Players roll the die and draw a card from the corresponding category pile, then perform the challenge shown on their card. When the cupcake tray is full, it’s time for a party! Includescupcake tray game board, 8 cupcake game pieces, 1 drawing pad, 1 die, and 100 challenge cards.

We liked this game.  Definitely helpful if you have a child who can read a bit- otherwise you need a lot of adult involvement.  We’re big Pinkalicious fans so we were really excited to check this out.  Lots of drama, art and movement in this game, plus the pinkness is oh so very cute!!

John Deere Dominoes: Any little John Deere lover will think this version of dominoes is tons of fun!

Kids can play along with the bright, colorful images of Johnny Tractor and his friends to help develop their matching, recognition and organizational skills.

My three year old is rockin’ the dominoes since we got this game.  Super sturdy cardboard, familiar Johnny Tractor, Eddie Excavator, and other John Deere friends help the littlest tractor lovers to learn a classic game.  Nice big pieces that are very durable and easy to hold.  One thing I LOVE about this game is the directions are on the same sturdy cardboard!!  Nice attention to detail.

Snoopy Sno Cone Machine: This is such a simple machine and offers so much fun when you have a hot day, or even a cold day with a sore throat!  I wanted one of these so badly as a kid and at 36 years of age, I finally have one.  You know, for the kids!)

For nearly 30 years, the Snoopy Sno-Cone Machine has symbolized summer fun. First introduced in 1979, this nostalgic toy lets children create treats to help them beat the heat. Just place an ice cube in the Snoopy Sno-Cone Machine, and watch it transform into a delicious dessert with a few turns of the handle. Kids can even flavor their creations with the included Flavor-Aid or with their favorite juice or soda.

We have used the Sno Cone machine a few times already- when the kiddos were sick it was a huge help- something new and fun to do, plus a soothing treat on very sore throats.  So simple, so cute, and SO much delicious fun! I can’t wait to use it more as the weather gets warmer.  Easy to clean, not a ton of pieces to keep track of or assemble after you clean, and you can buy flavored packets if you want or just use juice you have at home.  We have 2 very large blueberry bushes in our yard and always end up with too many blueberries that we don’t have room to freeze so I think we’ll be making some simple syrup with pureed blueberries for sno cones this summer!!

Great American Puzzle Factory is a sister company to Fundex and offer a big variety of puzzles for all ages and skill levels.  They sent us the Make ‘Em Move Assortment-Boy set, each of which comes in its own storage box and has moving parts to play with once the puzzle is put together.  Each of the puzzles has 24 pieces, are made of a really thick, sturdy cardboard and the moveable parts are fastened atop the puzzle with grommets.  Perfectly sized and constructed for little hands to manipulate!

Buy It: Find a retailer to purchase Fundex Games right on their site.  Amazon, Borders & Barnes and Noble are all listed as links.

THREE of my readers will win a Snoopy Sno Cone Maker!!

Debbie and Friends – Story songs & Sing alongs! (Giveaway) ends 4/15

Debbie and Friendsjust released a cute, fun animated cartoon series of story songs and sing alongs for kids.  You probably already know how much we love listening to music and dancing in our family, and I’m always game to check out the latest and greatest in kid-friendly music.  I’m often partial to the music that doesn’t appeal just to kids, but also their parents.

We all like Debbie and Friends. Good variety, great lyrics, and you’ll always find a good beat no matter what song you choose to listen to.  Story Songs & Sing Alongs features cartoon versions of “Little Red Riding Hood” “Cinderella” and “Jack and the Beanstalk,” plus original songs  “Willy Won’t” and “Home Run Ronnie.”  We’ve spent many afternoons dancing around while coloring (the kids) and cooking (me) since we’ve had this DVD and I can imagine we’ll spend many more in the same manner!

Little Tikes 2-in-1 Garden Cart & Wheelbarrow (Giveaway) ends 4/12

Spring is upon us (whether or not the temperatures are in agreement is another post!!) and we’ve been outside, outside, OUTSIDE!! a ton.  The kids are happier, I’m feeling happier- there’s just something so refreshing about being outside after a long cold New England winter that just puts a smile on my face.  (The fact that the kids sleep better is an added bonus…)

I realized not long ago that the toys we have for outside are for little kids, and preschoolers, and that we don’t have much for toddlers.  This isn’t such a good thing since I have a toddler, and she loves to go outside.  Thankfully, Little Tikes emailed last week and asked if we wanted to try a new spring toy, and this cute 2-in-1 Garden Cart & Wheelbarrow  was the option we chose:

Honk your horns! Chuggington: Ride the Rails now on DVD (giveaway)

“Chuggington” currently airs daily on Disney Junior, Disney Channel’s learning-focused programming block. The  show, if you are unaware, follows  three young trainees, Wilson, Brewster and Koko, as they learn to “ride the rails” of life and become productive chuggers. The characters are vibrant, engaging and relatable, and the life lessons learned during each episode are important ones, introduced on a preschool level.

Chuggington: Let’s Ride The Rails (SRP: $16.98- was avail 2/8/11) welcomes preschoolers to the vibrant world of “Chuggington” with six fun-filled episodes that take young viewers on entertaining explorations, while gently reinforcing valuable lessons such as humility, trust, respect and teamwork. The episodes featured on the new DVD are “Clunky Wilson,” “Braking Brewster,” “Can’t Catch Koko,” “Old Puffer Pete’s Tour,” “Koko On Call” and “Hodge And The Magnet.” Special bonuses include “Chuggington”-themed coloring pages and activity sheets.

My kids were hooked on Chuggington from the opening notes of the theme song the first time they heard them.  *I* like this show. I love the characters, I love the lessons taught, I love the quirky expressions- they are Traintastic!!  We love all of the friends and characters on Chuggington, although I think I like Mtambo and The Great Frostini best…I love their names!   If you have an aspiring train engineer who wants to do more Badge Quests, this is a great DVD for your collection- it would be a great add-in for an Easter basket!

Britax Frontier 85 Review & Giveaway ends 4/15

Carseat safety is a big deal to me.  I get a little obsessive about it at times, but hey, we all have our “things” and this is mine.  My son has spent the last 18 months in a very girlie, not at all boy flower print carseat, because, quite simply, I found a great price on one of the safest carseats on the market and snatched it.  When I say a great price I mean I stalked my local Target store enormously pregnant and when they thought they were sold out, I saw a Britax Marathon box tucked in the shelves UNDER where the exersaucers were.  Do you know what my very pregnant self did?  I climbed under the shelving to get that box.  (I LOVE bargains, remember?!)  34+weeks pregnant chubby lady wrestling with a huge carseat box.  Totally sane.  Not crazy at all.  But- I had a 10% off my purchase coupon and a normally $279.99 carseat was ringing up at $125.00.  I’d do it again in a heartbeat.  Well, maybe I’d ask a salesperson to climb in there, but you know.

I’ll do a lot for safety.  I’ll do just about anything for the safety of my children.  I’ve had people tell me I’m crazy for being like this- but I know Britax, and I trust Britax.  I have heard countless parents from countless walks of life say the same things over and over and over again:  Safe seats.  Rock-solid, unwaveringly safe seats.

The way people drive these days, every penny spent on a Britax is worth it!! (We’ve had a Roundabout, 3 Marathons a Parkway SGL and now the Frontier 85). With large SUV’s and so many tractor trailers sharing roadspace at all times, and adding in distracted drivers using cell phones or reading emails, or people eating, applying makeup… the road can be a scary place.

Despite my love of the seat my little man is  was in, and trust me, I do still love it, we needed a new carseat because one of the seats in the truck is expiring next month.  So, when Britax said they’d sent a Frontier 85 for us, I was super excited.  We moved the flower seat to the truck, and now my littly guy can Moooooooooo-ve around in style (well, drive, but that’s not as funny to say with the print) riding around in his Frontier.

This seat has a 5 point harness that goes up until 85 lbs.  (My husband jokes that I can’t possibly send my kids to a driver’s ed class in 5 pt. harnesses…I say, watch me!)  The LATCH weight limit is higher.    Super easy to install with the tether and the LATCH. Click and tighten!

One thing I’ve always loved about the Britax brand, and the Frontier is no exception, is that the straps and buckles are so easy to use.  They pull smoothly, and loosen smoothly.  No need to tug or yank.  You KNOW for certain your child’s seat is buckled because you can hear it click in- and if it isn’t clicking, you know it isn’t buckled all the way.  We’ve had a few times over the years when there wasn’t a click and my kids notice first!! Mom!  No click!!

This seat has something new, to me- instead of having to pretty much take most of the carseat apart to move the harness straps up and down, the whole headrest piece can be slid up and down for height adjustment.  This was great for me- changing the height on harness straps or changing carseat covers can be one of the biggest headaches parents face (want to get tempers flaring in the Bargains house?  Tell Mr. B that we have to adjust the carseat straps in one of the seats in the truck. There’s no LATCH in there…).  Really, though, it took me a minute when we got the seat out of the box to realize how simple this seat was to adjust for height.  I have heard other parents say the harness straps tangle easily on this seat, but I haven’t had that issue (yet?!).  Even if the straps do tangle, I’ll deal with it.

Of course, unlike the Marathon my 19 month old is riding in and Buddy B has been riding in, the Frontier has cupholders.  Apparently this is kind of a BIG DEAL to the preschool crowd.  Safety features?  Who needs ’em?  Cupholders are where its at!

Some of the features of the Britax Frontier 85:

  • Energy-Absorbing Versa-Tether® features a staged-release tether webbing to slow the forward movement, reducing the crash forces reaching the child, and a two-point attachment to minimize forward rotation while anchoring the top of the child seat
  • Tangle Free, Five-Point Harness with 10 harness height positions (up to 20″) and three buckle positions for a snug and secure fit as your child grows
  • Harness Ultra Guard System (HUGS™) provides resistance to forward movement in the event of a crash
  • Compatible with SecureGuard which works with the vehicle safety belt in booster mode to prevent the child from sliding under the lap-belt portion of the safety belt during impact, thus minimizing the risk of abdominal injury (accessory sold separately)
  • Energy-Absorbing Foam Liner (EPS) absorbs and distributes crash forces
  • Energy-Absorbing Base deforms in the event of a crash to absorb impact forces
  • High Density Comfort Foam provides an extra layer of padding to gently cushion your child
  • Plush, Premium Cover Set with thick, underlying comfort foam provides extra comfort, encouraging your child to stay in the proper position
  • Armrests help provide a secure fit and a comfortable place to rest tired arms
  • Premium Lower LATCH Connectors for a quick and simple installation featuring a push button for easy release
  • Color-Coded Vehicle Belt Guides indicate the path and positioning of the vehicle lap and shoulder seat belt
  • Integrated Cup Holders are designed to fit common beverages such as 20 oz reusable water bottles
  • Durable and Washable Cover in mature fashions for the growing child
  • Harness-2-Booster converts to a belt-positioning booster seat
  • Certified for Aircraft Travel in Harness Mode
  • Made in the USA with global components
  • MSRP (USD) $279.99
