Getting nutrients you need as an adult #CentrumVitamins #ad

I’m pretty good about feeding my family healthy meals. I am.  I’m even pretty good about giving my family multivitamins, and even probiotics.  And then it comes to me, and I… well, I am not so great at following my own advice. Getting enough nutrients- the right  nutrients? I’m not always so great about that. I’ve been really focused on living a healthier life, making better meal and snack choices, and drinking lots of water this year. But at the end of the day, I’m a pretty picky eater and I’m not so great about eating a huge variety of foods.  So getting enough nutrients as an adult, for me, can be a big challenge. Many Americans, 9 out of 10 of us, are falling short in getting the essential nutrients our bodies need and of course, we all want easy ways to support our nutritional health that fit our busy lifestyle.  Obviously eating a well balanced diet is key, but a little support never hurt anyone, and I have been trying to be cognizant of the need of and remembering to take a daily multivitamin. I have always tried a multi in the past and ended up stopping within a week or so because of the size of the vitamins themselves…so finding some fun gummies that I can chew from a brand I trust already was a big bonus for me. This post is about getting nutrients you need as an adult is brought to you by our friends at Centrum.

How to purify the air in your home

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Holmes® Smart Air Purifier. All opinions are 100% mine.

Do you suffer from allergies? Half of my household does and it can get pretty bad for them. One issue we have is the need to keep the windows closed then the weather is not nice enough to do otherwise. That just traps impure air inside your house, making it hard for those allergy sufferers miserable. I was unaware until recently, but the air inside your home can be grosser than the air outside the house.

There are a handful of hidden allergens in your house that can make people with allergies ill. For instance, you can shed up to 40,000 skin cells per minute. These skin cells float in the air inside your home and can cover most of the surfaces in the house. Dust mites can also be an issue with more than 3 million of them living in your home at any given time! When they poop, we can inhale that and it can make us sick. If you have pets like we do, even with the best vacuum, their pet hair and dander can get trapped in carpets, furniture, bedding and even our clothes. Another sneaky allergen is pollen. I thought it stayed outside, but every time you open the door to your house, it can waft right in.

How to purify the air in your home

So the question is how to get your air inside your home clean. You can buy a vacuum that uses a good HEPA filter system, which will help trap more of these allergens than a normal filter. You can also keep live plants which not only look nice, but can absorb up to 60% of mold spores, bacteria and other airborne allergens.

holmes-we-mo-air-purifier

One of the best ways you can purify the air in your home is to put a good air purifier like the Holmes® Smart Air Purifier with WeMo technology. Because it contains a True HEPA air filter, your home environment is optimized to meet your family’s needs. True HEPA filtration removes 99.97% of airborne allergens like pollen, dust, dust mite debris, mold spores, pet dander and smoke/odor. The unit actually comes with 2 replaceable True HEPA Allergen-Remover filters.holmes-air-purifier

The WeMo technology is super cool and is easy as pie to use. Even if you are not in the room or at home, you can use your smartphone or tablet to control your Holmes® Smart Air Purifier. What I love about the Holmes® Smart Air Purifier is you can program it to be at a higher speed when no one is home and a lower speed when you are asleep. The device is wirelessly connected, so if the air in your home becomes impure, you can turn purifier on. It also notifies you when it is time to change your filters, which I am always forgetting to do. Another great feature is the air quality sensor that automatically adjusts speeds when your indoor air quality is poor. The Holmes® Smart Air Purifier is perfect for those who are allergy and asthma sufferers, parents with children, pet owners and health conscious families like mine.

Saving on prescriptions

Tracking PixelI have 3 medications I take every day. Every day,  year round.  Right now, the dog is on 2 medications daily, and two of our kids have inhalers for when they have colds. One might say we frequent the pharmacy.  I try to stay with the same pharmacy for our refills, because I like the consistency and we can do refills quickly and with ease. When I find offers like the new Shop Your Way® Pharmacy Rewards Program that gives members $10 back in points* (10,000 points) for every five qualifying prescriptions filled in a rolling 12-month period, it’s time to change things up and move our prescriptions.  I’m all about getting the most bang for my buck regardless of what I’m buying, so when Kmart asked if I’d write a post about the new rewards program to share with you all, I was quick to agree.

saving-on-prescriptions

For every five qualifying prescriptions filled in a rolling 12-month period, you get $10 back in points* (10,000 points).  That’s probably $10 a month for my family, maybe $10 every other month.  Just for filling prescriptions we were going to fill anyway.  That’s as much as $120 a year for my little family.  Plus, I’m already using Shop Your Way®, and already save each time I make purchases (or have a birthday, thank you for my birthday surprise, Shop Your Way®!) …. so what I was hearing in my head reading about this new program was cha-ching! cha-ching! cha-ching!  Hi there, money! Thanks for coming back to my wallet! One of my favorite things about this program is that I can grab Tobey (our dog) and Rosie (Our cat) their immunizations AND any of their medications and those qualify too!! I have to refill Tobey’s medication he’s on two more times, and guess where I’ll be filling it?  Yep.  You guessed it!

kmart-pharmacy-rewards

Key features of this new way of saving on prescriptions:

  • Automatic Updates: As you fill a prescription at your Kmart Pharmacy using your Shop Your Way® number, it’s automatically applied to your next reward.  No extra steps for you at all.
  • Pharmacy Reward Tracking: Progress toward your next Reward can be tracked three ways: 1) members can login at kmartpharmacy.com/rewards, 2) a receipt will be printed tracking each prescription purchase at checkout and 3) members can opt in for email updates.
  • Availability: Once received, Pharmacy Reward points are usually available for members to redeem during the next transaction following their prescription purchase. Once awarded, pharmacy reward points are valid for 14 days.
  • Point Redemption: Reward points can be redeemed for qualifying non-pharmacy merchandise at any Kmart or Sears, both in-store and online.
  • Limitless Rewards: There is no limit to the number of pharmacy rewards a member can earn in a rolling year. The more prescriptions filled, the more rewards earned!  You may have to start planning what to spend your rewards ON, because they’ll be in your account before you know it!!

Both current and new Shop Your Way® members must enroll for the program at any Kmart Pharmacy or online at kmartpharmacy.com/rewards.

Do You Know When Your Child Needs An Eye Exam?

As a parent, we have so many things we have to think about and remember when it comes to our kids. Sometimes we get so focused on the day to day activities, we do not always remember to follow through on other issues. When we have a healthy child, this is especially true for many parents.  Thank you to ThinkAboutYourEyes.com and MomitForward.com for including me in this sponsored campaign about children’s eye exams.

Do You Know When Your Child Needs An Eye Exam?

does-your-child-need-eye-exam

We take for granted our kids are healthy until something happens that changes that whole idea. You probably take your children to their pediatrician once a year for their annual well check visit, right? Do you know your child needs an eye exam as part of their healthy checkup schedule? According to a National survey, only 2 in 5 or 40% of parents think their child needs an eye exam as part of their healthy checkup schedule. Interestingly enough, this is about half as many who think the same about an annual trip to the dentist (81%) or pediatrician (78%) are essential.

build a bear glasses

Not real glasses, but she hopes to one day “need” them…these belong to her stuffed animals.

If you have a child under the age of 6, they are more likely to miss out. I was surprised to learn that according to the American Optometric Association (AOA), more than a third of parents have ever taken their child to the eye doctor. Mine all went at one for the first time, and have had at least a checkup each since then.  My brother was born with Hyperplastic Vitreous and my mom always stressed how important eye exams are for kids. Because many parents are in the dark about when to take their child to see an eye doctor, 24% of them will wait until their child shows symptoms before seeking help.

I was absolutely shocked to learn 84% of parents say they would not see an eye doctor when their child started complaining about their vision. What is actually recommended by the AOA is that parents need to take children who do not wear contacts or glasses to the eye doctor every two years. If you are unsure of where to find an eye doctor for your child, you can visit the Think About Your Eyes website. Another area of eye care parents should be aware of is protecting their children’s eyes from harmful UV rays. When you are out in the sun, your child should have their eyes protected. You can learn more about this issue on the Vision Council website.

Four Ways to Get Your Body Ready For Spring

“Disclosure: Compensation was provided by Walgreens via Mode Media. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author and are not indicative of the opinions or positions of Walgreens.”

For many of us, the winter months are a time of rest. It seems once school starts, we are heading toward the holidays at full speed. Instead of working out at the gym, we are cooking huge meals, visiting with friends, hosting parties and pretty much over indulging in many areas. If you are like most folks, you may pack on a few unwanted pounds during that time. No wonder people make those New Year’s resolutions!

get body ready for spring

With spring upon us, here are a few ways you can get your body ready for spring:

Food: Put away those casserole dishes and get to the farmer’s market! This is a great time of year to get fresh fruits and vegetables your body has been craving.

fruit

Beverages: Water, water, water and more water! Get rid of the soda, fruit juices and other sugary drinks and trade them for good old H20.

Exercise: It is time to stretch your limbs and get them moving. Start out by simply walking. You will be amazed at how great you feel after a walk around the block.

fitness clothes

Vitamins: Our bodies need vitamins and minerals and we don’t always get those from the food we eat. To stay healthy in the spring, you need to be on a vitamin routine.

Vitamins help our body work the way they should. If we don’t take them, our bodies can begin to break down.  For my spring health routine, I take several vitamins that give me healthy hair, nails, skin, internal organs and eyes. For healthy skin and a strong immune system, I take Vitamin A while Vitamin D keeps my teeth, bones and nails nice and strong. Vitamin C is a must have to fight those spring colds I tend to get.

vitamins

So, where should you go to get all your vitamins, supplements and minerals you need for your healthy body? I go to my trusted Walgreens. Not only do they have a huge selection of all the products I need, they have a staff on hand to answer all of my questions.

Walgreens_CornerOf_Lockup_Standard_Multi_RGB[1][2][3]

When shopping for vitamins, you might find it useful to know that you can help a child in need with every vitamins or supplements purchase at Walgreens. Millions of children around the world are suffering from ‘hidden hunger’, a lack of micronutrients that can lead to disease and even death. In fact, 45% of all childhood deaths are attributable to under-nutrition. Walgreens is giving a portion of all vitamin retail sales to Vitamin Angels to help 100 million children in the U.S. and abroad get the vitamins they need to live well.

Essential Oils for Family

What Are Essential Oils? Essential oils are natural, concentrated fragrant compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of a plant.  Essential oils have been used historically for therapeutic and medicinal purposes.  They are most recently know for the use in aromatherapyEssential oils can be used aromatically, topically and internally.  I use essential oils in a variety of applications at home.  I especially like to add them to my vinegar and water solution to clean around the house.

essential-oils-family

I decided to start with an essential oil kit. I got the Doterra Family Physicial Kit The kit includes 5 ml bottles of Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Oregano, Frankincense, Deep Blue, Breathe, Digestzen, and On Guard to help families address a variety of health issues. The kit also came with a 15ml bottle of Slim and Sassy and a Wellness Advocate Enrollment kit all for $166.67. The kit arrived quickly and safely. I started using it right away. Last night I put some lavender oil in a diffuser in my son’s room. He slept late this morning and it was because of the “stuff” I put in his room.

The kit comes with a recyclable plastic tray that holds the essential oils tightly in place when being shipped or transported. It also has a description of each oil and how they can be used.
The Doterra Family Physician Kit comes with 4 blends. I have been using the Deep Blue blend which is also available in a roll on and lotion. Deep Blue soothing blend is great for sore muscles and joints. It smells great and you can feel it working right away. This blend is intended for topical use only. I am sure that I will be ordering more soon.

The other blends are On Guard Protective Blend, Breathe Respritory Blend, and Digestzen Digestive Blend. I love these because I know exactly what is in them. There are no fillers or sugars or ingredients that are impossible to read. They are all natural!
Today I am using Peppermint oil in my new diffuser to help keep me alert and on task. It is also making the house smell delicious. I got this portable, USB difusser that will be great for traveling and on my desk.

Be prepared for surprises no matter where you are!

After a winter hiatus, I’m back to doing the Couch 2 5k program.  I’m plugging along, at my “perky walk” pace, but in my mind, plugging along counts regardless of how fast you are.  I may never meet my awesome cousin’s running pace, but I’m totally ok with that.  I have to be honest though, one thing that happens to me so often, and to so many others (many of whom have also been pregnant), is a little leakage while exercising.  That doesn’t make for comfort while running/jogging/walking/perkywalking/exercising/moving/sitting. It’s embarassing, totally annoying, but you know what? It happens to a LOT of us.  I’m just one of the few who will speak to it. Part of being active is being prepared for what may happen- no matter where you are… or what you are doing! Some things, we cannot plan for. But some? You totally can! This post is brought to you by our friends at Depend, opinions are my own.  I am participating in a Vibrant Influencer network campaign for the Depend brand. I am receiving a fee for posting; however, the opinions expressed in this post are my own. I am in no way affiliated with Depend and do not earn a commission or percent of sales.

be-prepared-for-surprises

Monday of this week, I was in Boston and standing at mile 24 of the Boston Marathon.  Like in the rain, freezing, cheering on runners, right there in the moment.  As I cheered these amazing athletes on, it struck me over and over, that they have been running for a few hours and what would that be like if you have to pee or if you have a little leakage?  The discomfort that must create! Do you stop? Do you keep going? Does it matter? (Note here: I’ve been doing some searches online, and it seems some folks do stop to get a bit of relief. Others refuse to…and deal with the consequence).

Over 51 million American women experience bladder leakage. That’s 1 in 3 American women*.

  • There are many common causes of bladder leakage in women including pregnancy, childbirth and even diabetes.

To support the over 51 million women who experience bladder leakage, the Depend brand is introducing Depend Silhouette Active Fit briefs, a new moderate-absorbency brief that features a thin design for complete comfort with the trusted protection of the Depend brand and a lower rise+for an underwear-like look, fit and feel.

The Depend brand is also entering year two of Underwareness, a social movement and charitable cause to break down the bladder leakage stigma. As part of  Underwareness, the Depend brand is:

Encouraging people to show their support for women with bladder leakage. For every photo and video shared using #Underwareness, the Depend brand will donate $1, up to $3 million, through 2016 to fund charities that advance the research and education of bladder leakage.

Join the movement and request a free sample of Depend Silhouette Active Fit briefs at www.Underwareness.com. Together, we can show that wearing a different kind of underwear is no big deal.

In year two of Underwareness, the brand’s social movement and charitable cause to break down the bladder leakage stigma, Depend is joining forces with CVS Health to support women with bladder leakage as they navigate their path to better health.

Here’s some video footage (with a few minor comments from me)- I can’t imagine stopping so far into a 26.2 mile run.  I have to wonder how many runners might be wearing some kind of product (like Depend Silhouette Active Fit) that can help to absorb a little leakage. I think I might be one of them!

Are you a runner? Do you have leakage issues as well? How do you deal with them?

Ten Things You May Not Know About Antioxidants and Preservatives #AntioxidantFacts

About a year ago, I began doing a lot of research about foods and how they affect the health of my family and me. I have never been one to follow the leader when it comes to anything in my life, and what I eat wasn’t any different. One of the subjects I kept running across was about antioxidants and preservatives and how they impact the food we eat. I will admit, I was completely clueless and was eager to find out as much about them as I could. I recently participated in a briefing hosted by ConAgra Foods with The Motherhood to learn more about antioxidants and preservatives.

10-things-antioxidants-preservatives

Here are some really interesting facts about antioxidants and preservatives you may not know:

1. An antioxidant helps prevent oxygen from damaging other molecules. In your body, they help protect cells, slows the aging process, boosts your body’s natural defense system fend off environmental toxins and stress, keeping us healthier. In foods, they protect oils from damage that can cause them to spoil.

2. Either man-made or natural, when you consume antioxidants as part of a balanced diet, they are totally safe for your food and for your body. Actually, antioxidants help you and your family enjoy the foods you love without compromising on taste or quality.

3. Preserving foods helps make them taste better, they are safer, they are fresher, their natural color is maintained and you reduce their food waste. You can preserve food by canning or freezing them or even putting them in the fridge. Packaged food you eat every day may have ingredients added to help preserve them.

4. Some antioxidants naturally found in food are Vitamin E, which is found in nuts, seeds and leafy green vegetables and Vitamin C, which you can find in citrus fruits. Sometimes it is also called sodium ascorbate, which saves breads and packaged meat from spoiling. Citric Acid is found naturally in citrus fruits and is used to preserve sliced fruit.

5. Some antioxidants are man-made like BHT, which is a tasteless, colorless antioxidant which maintains freshness in grain-based foods like crackers and cookies. TBHQ is also tasteless and colorless and is commonly used to keep vegetable oils and other packaged foods fresh.

6. Food makers, like ConAgra Foods for example, chooses certain preservative ingredients based on what they know will deliver the best flavor, while keeping your foods safe and fresh.

7. A common misconception among consumers when it comes to preservatives in foods is that people think they are harmful or unnecessary. Actually, the opposite can be true. Preservatives such as antioxidants are necessary to reduce off-taste and odors in foods caused by breakdown of cells, fats and oils.

8. Some people are not sure why there is a need for man-made antioxidants if natural antioxidants are available. The reason for this is because natural antioxidants can add a flavor, taste or odor to our foods. To maintain a high quality in our foods, man-made antioxidants are used because they are tasteless, colorless and odorless.

9. Examples of packaged foods that use antioxidants as preservatives would be any food product that contains a fat or oil like microwaved popcorn, cookies, and cereal products. You may be surprised to know that there is actually no difference chemically in a naturally produced antioxidants.

10. These natural and man-made preservatives and antioxidants are completely safe. A great analogy from Kristi, an AgraCon employee is when thinking about the water in a puddle. Water causes drowning, but if you are standing in a puddle, you are not going to drown!

Simply said, whether man-made or natural, antioxidants are used to preserve the flavor, color, and improve the shelf-life of foods. Both are evaluated for their safe use in food by scientific experts trained to understand the impact on human health. Both function to reduce rancidity in food by preventing the breakdown of fats and oils (and other compounds). Both must be used at low levels in accordance with regulatory guidelines and safety thresholds. Both must be “food grade” so as not to introduce hazardous by-products or impurities in foods. Both benefit you and your family by providing food of high quality and flavor, so that you may enjoy the foods that you love!

My Top 5 Ways to Relieve Stress #StressLess2BMyBest

With the holidays just recently behind us and this awful weather we have had, it is no wonder folks are feeling stressed. Our economic standing is not yet where it needs to be, with many people still out of work and looking for ways to financially take care of their families. Add kids, school projects, car pools, after school activities and you have someone who is most likely one big stress ball. If this sounds familiar on any level, you are in good company! I feel stressed on a regular basis, and I have found a few tried and true ways to relieve stress. Feel free to give them a try! Thanks to RESCUE for partnering with me to talk about ways to relieve stress today.

My Top 5 Ways to Relieve Stress

  1. Massage: Nothing beats a full body or deep tissue massage to let the stress in your life fall away. Don’t have the money for a professional massage? Get your significant other to give you one and then you can return the favor.
  2. Meditation: Even if you have a packed day ahead, you can find 5, 10 or 15 minutes to meditate. All you need is a quiet place you can go and just let your mind find your happy place. Instead of focusing on your stressors, focus on your breathing.
  3. Exercise: As much as many of us hate to admit it, exercise is a great way to relieve stress. If you have a gym you can visit, great! If not, head outside and take a 30 minute walk. The fresh air and movement will make a world of difference.
  4. Eat Healthy: As much as I love to eat something sweet, I know how much better I feel when I eat something healthy. Why compromise? Find a recipe that can combine the two!
  5. Natural Supplements: There is nothing wrong with taking something to ease your stress Instead of heading to the doctor for a prescription, head to the natural supplements section of your local retailer or grocery store, either online or in person.
