Giving the Gift of Caring

One of my most favorite songs of all time is Twila Paris‘ “It’s the Thought That Counts” and I can tell you that I’ve never once heard it without feeling inspired to do for others.  So how do we actually GIVE the gift of caring to our children, our friends, our families?

twila paris its the thought

In my world, growing up, I learned how to give by watching my family give to others- my parents opened their home to anyone who needed a place to go, on every single holiday.  Last minute? No problem.  My parents always found a way to have some kind of special surprise under the tree for anyone spending time at our home over Christmas.  But it was more than that- more than just Christmas, or holidays I mean.  They taught us how to care by example- when someone had a loss in the family, or was sick… we helped.  We cooked, we babysat, we ran errands.  We were there, to support and care. I remember when my cousin came home from a tour in Iraq and my parents offered her the use of our lake house for a week.  Just because they knew she might need a place to chill and kind of recharge, reconnect with her family.  It was in these acts that we kids learned how to give the gift of caring.

One of the ways we, meaning my husband and I, try to show our children how to give the gift of caring is also what my parents did.  When our old neighbor calls and needs her gutters cleaned, off my husband goes.  She’s elderly and hasn’t got anyone else to do it.  When a coworker needs to move a heavy piece of furniture- my husband goes.  When a friend needs an hour of quiet, we watch her kids.  When we see someone struggling, we offer help.  Sometimes, we just offer a smile or a kind word.

kleenex care kit

A simple way we can teach our children the gift of caring- giving them what I think is one of the best gifts we CAN give them, is by doing.  Even fun little things like sending one of the Share the Softness packages from Kleenex is a way to help teach our children the gift of caring.  Kleenex is still running the promotion:   visit your local retailer, purchase a Kleenex brand bundle pack and redeem the code on the box. Then simply visit Kleenex.com and follow the directions to send a Care Pack to someone who needs a little care, while supplies last.

Other things we do with our kids: baking goodies for elderly neighbors, visiting with neighbors, holding doors, smiling, sending a card or note in the mail when we think of someone who’s not so close by.  There are so many ways we can give our children the gift of caring, don’t you think?

How do you think we can give the gift of caring?

“I wrote this review while participating in an ambassador program by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of the Kleenex brand and received product samples and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.”

What made us decide to get life insurance policies

Having kids is a reason that many folks decide to get a life insurance policy. I know we have three very good reasons to have a policy.  (Aren’t they cute?)

3 kids are 3 good reasons to get life insurance

Photo credit: Jennifer Mirock Photography www.mirockphotography.com

I will forever remember the morning of September 11, 2001, just as almost any American will.  I will also forever remember returning home after work that evening, taking a look at my then-boyfriend and bursting into tears, realizing as I looked at him that he was a strong, healthy young man and we were probably going to go to war to retaliate against the terrorists and ohmygoshwhatifhedoesgotowarwhatwillhappentome and suddenly my world seemed to just STOP.  I’m still not sure how that could possibly be because it had stopped that morning when I first learned of the attacks.  But still, things got real in an entirely different way right then and there.

We’d already bought a house together, just a few months before. We knew we’d be married down the road, although we weren’t officially engaged. But we knew.  We’d known since about 2 weeks after we met that this was it…for both of us.  He was already thinking about what he could do to plan ahead for the worst in the event that more attacks came, or if he got drafted to go to war, or went to enlist.  He’s the planner. I’m the feeler.

After we’d been home a few hours, had dinner, cleaned up, he said he wanted to have a serious conversation.  Brett, he said, I think I’m going to get life insurance. Name you as the beneficiary.  That way, if something happens, you’re taken care of. You won’t be left with a mortgage you can’t afford in a house that’s in this condition (we’d bought a fixer upper- it was JUST finished 100% when we moved out in June of 2005).  It took me a while to begin to wrap my head around this.  But he was right. So we started to look into life insurance policies. Then we got a little bit confused.

Trying to figure out how much life insurance was a bit overwhelming to us both.  We  weren’t aware of sites like Genworth Financial who provide resources and information to help sort things out when it comes to looking into life insurance.   Thankfully, we did get it sorted out, and we’ve had coverage ever since.  It may not be the most pleasant thing to discuss, but having life insurance helps to ensure that your loved ones aren’t left high and dry if the unthinkable happens.  Now that we have children, we’ve changed our policies as well.  Articles like this Life Insurance 101 I found are a way to find out more information before deciding what kind of insurance to purchase and how much.

Do you have life insurance? What made you decide to get it? Do you have any tips or suggestions?

Gift Ideas for Baby

What do you get for the littlest ones in our lives? Tiny infants don’t open gifts, they won’t know, but it’s hard to not get them something for the holidays, isn’t it? I have a few gift ideas for baby!

Books– Think of yourfavorite books as a child. Or the books you and your children have read hundreds and hundreds of times. Why not start adding to the baby’s book collection? Some of our favorites: anything Sandra Boynton, Eric Carle…the Llama Llama Red Pajama books, Goodnight Moon, anything by Jez Alborough, and anything by Roger Priddy. Books are usually read over and over, especially with young children, so try to get board books! You could even just start a tradition of a holiday themed book – add to that collection every year!

Clothing– Ask the parents what the baby needs. Maybe they need some clothes for the next season, or a larger size. It’s not like baby clothes aren’t adorable in every size, you know?

wooden shape sorting cube

Baby Toys– If this is a family’s first baby, chances are, they don’t have much for the “next” age level for toys. Ask around, do some research. Sophie the Giraffe is a family favorite that I often give as a shower gift, but most certainly would give for a holiday gift as well. A nice shape sorting toy is always appreciated, and used for many many months- my kids are 3, 5 and 7 and they STILL use our shape sorting bus! Most sites online or employees in smaller stores can help give you some wonderful ideas based on baby’s age- don’t be afraid to ask!

Bath Stuff– What about a gift basket- good for baby and parents? Some great bath products (check with the parents first if they have a brand they prefer), a few cute bath toys, maybe a hooded towel, a puppet washcloth, and some lotion, with some lotion and a candle for the parents would be a great gift.

Get Better Basket– Like it or not, most babies can and will get sick. Products to help them feel better can add up fast. Why not do a themed gift and do a fun character humidifier, some natural relief products (see my thoughts on Maty’s natural relief products), a blanket to snuggle, and maybe some herbal tea and honey for mom and dad.

Dishes/Drinkware: A nice set of child-safe dishes, child sized silverware, a nice sippy cup or two can also be a great gift. Even baby china- my mom bought all of her grandkids a set of baby china when they were born- most of them got Peter Rabbit themed- we still use them on Thanksgiving and other special occasions even today.

What are YOUR favorite gift ideas for babies?

Save Your Skin with Neosporin Eczema Essentials (Prize Pack Giveaway)

ins.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/neosporin-eczema-essentials.jpg” width=”400″ height=”600″ />I have eczema. My son has eczema too. It’s pretty much dormant in warmer weather, but it’s been back in full force for at least the past 6 weeks. I’m always on the lookout for something that will help not only provide some relief for itching, but also to help prevent more itching. Neosporin’s Eczema Essentials is a product line that works for those who have eczema but also for those who just have dry, itchy skin.

We have both been using the Eczema Essentials for a few weeks now, and while neither of us is living free of eczema, I know I’ve noticed my son is less cranky, and wanting to change his clothes less often (does this happen to other kids who have eczema? It’s like he wants to change his skin or something but he can’t verbalize that)…and I don’t notice his eczema patches looking quite so ‘angry’ lately. He’s happy there isn’t girlie smell in the products. He’s 5 you know, so he wants to smell like a superhero, not a girl. His words, not mine.

In any case, winter may not be started by the calendar but the air’s feeling wintry and the heat’s been on, which means the skin irritation from drier air has begun. Besides using products like the Eczema Essentials, Dr. Peter Lio has these seasonal skincare tips for us:

Fall:

Many people suffer from seasonal allergies in the fall, and these can trigger skin irritation along with the change to drier, cooler weather.

  • If seasonal allergies are active, talk to your doctor about keeping them in check with medications such as antihistamines
  • Focus on a regular skincare routine with regular bathing and moisturizing, as well as using topical medications when needed
  • Moisturize within minutes after every shower or bath to help lock in the water

Winter:

Cold and dry weather outside and forced hot air inside can put the skin at high risk for irritation. The lack of sunlight may result in lower levels of vitamin D which may be related to skin irritation as well.

  • Keep skin warm and protected when outside
  • Try a thick, protective moisturizer on any exposed skin to prevent windburn
  • Consider talking to your doctor about supplementing vitamin D during the winter months as many people are deficient
  • Consider getting a humidifier for bedrooms to help add moisture to the dry air
  • Moisturize within minutes after every shower or bath to help lock in the water

One thing I learned long ago is NOT to take super hot showers or baths when my skin is dry and/or irritated. It only makes things worse. I’m a little surprised that’s not included in the tips, but maybe that’s because it’s a year-round recommendation.

I found some money saving coupons on the Neosporin site- nice, higher value ones. I hope they help you save some- I know I’m printing some off right now!

The Neosporin Eczema Essential Line is available widely in most drug stores and online.

One US reader will win a prize pack of the Eczema Essentials including one full sized sample of each product, money saving coupons, and a set of trial sized samples, all in a cute plastic tub.

Maty’s Natural Cold Remedies (Prize Pack Giveaway)

c=”http://mamalovesherbargains.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/matys-all-natural-baby-chest-rub.jpg” width=”448″ height=”600″ />

Maty’s company is named after their daughter, Maty, who was born with severe heart defects. Due to her weakened immune system her parents were devoted to finding natural cures for her ailments, and thus was born Maty’s company. The products they offer are all natural cough syrup (both for little kids and adults), vapor rubs, and breathe better ointments.

matys all natural remedies

I’ve always looked for natural products to provide relief when my family is not feeling well. One of the first things I learned as a new mom was to but a baby vapor rub on my baby’s feet to help when she’s congested- and then about 20 seconds later I read to never use the vapor rubs sold in stores because it can harm the baby. I trusted my gut and went on the hunt for a natural, safe vapor product. I still used the foot technique, and obviously we made it through that cold, and dozens of others. I like being able to use products that are safe to use for my children. I want to give them relief when they are having a lot of coughing and cannot sleep at night…or so stuffed up they can’t really breathe. I want to give them the relief with the peace of mind that these remedies aren’t going to potentially harm them.

I discovered Maty’s over the summer, at the local grocery store, which in and of itself was exciting to me- there, right next to all of the medicines, was a natural product! Available right there! I was thrilled. I bought three. One for each bathroom and a backup. I was so glad to find an all natural product that had the ingredients that I know from researching to be effective in treating cold and flu symptoms. Products that offer relief but are free from menthol and petroleum in the ingredients.

I’m sure if you have small children like I do you are aware of the recommendations to not use any kind of cough syrup for children under the age of 6. That’s all well and good until your child under the age of 6 is coughing incessantly and the doctor says it’s just a virus, but your child is very uncomfortable and you’re sitting there arguing with yourself that kids aren’t supposed to have this stuff if they aren’t at least 6, but she’s so uncomfortable, and maybe if I just give her a half dose…but what if that’s still too much….all while your little one is just looking at you like mom (or dad) please just make me feel better. It’s a dilemma. Thankfully Maty’s offers natural cough remedies in addition to the vapor rub (which is available for adults and children over the age of 3 months) as well as a nasal ointment to help breathe better.

A gift basket with each of the Maty’s products would make a really wonderful (and thoughtful) gift for expectant or new parents- or anyone, really. Perhaps a little non traditional for a gift, but that’s always ok with me. When I find products like this that I truly believe can impact a family’s life, I do try to include it for a shower or holiday gift. If it’s helped me, it may help someone else!

Maty’s Healthy Products is also a proud supporter of Vitamin Angels. Your purchase of our products helps connect needy children worldwide with vital nutritional supplements. For more information on this organization, please go to www.vitaminangels.org

Cribbage I don’t know how many variations of Cribbage there are. I know that for every person there’s probably at least one design of cribbage board– tucked up in my daughters’ room right now is a wooden dolphin cribbage board my husband made for me years ago – with wooden pegs carved out in the first letter of each of our names for pegs from his dad. (Will add photo as soon as I can)

classic parcheesi

Parcheesi- Classic Edition- I would wager a guess that my mom and I spent at least 500 hours in my childhood at our summer lake house playing Parcheesi. She’d get so mad because I’d get double sixes like nobody’s business! It’s a fun game and I really need to add this to my own family collection- the memories alone warrant that purchase. But it’s a fun game and appropriate for kids ages 8+ . Just looking at the images brings back so many memories for me! We had no electricity on the island so we played board games, card games, and read when it was stormy or cold or at night. That’s it.

pass the pigs

Pass the Pigs– kids think this one is hilarious. It’s also quite easily modified, but how can rolling pigs around not be fun?! My 5 year old loves this game. He thinks its hilarious when the pigs are upside down. This is a GREAT stocking stuffer. We have played this game for gosh, at least 10 years??!! Friends of ours introduced us when we were hanging out at their apartment years ago…since then we’ve married our significant others, had children, moved, and you know what? We still play this- but now the kids join in!

I think there are many, many other groups of people who can benefit from a device like this.

With the Beamz, there is music grouped by category and genre, so you can be sure to have something you like to play with. The music library appears to be growing on a regular basis, so you don’t have to worry about running out of options.
