Magellan eXplorist GC Geocaching GPS

Thank you to Magellan for sending us the eXplorist GC GPS to use while geocaching.  The GPS is great and has begun my family on a new and active hobby.  In the three weeks since we recieved the Magellan eXplorist GC GPS we have discovered trails and parks that we did not know existed.   It has got us outside hiking and being together as a family.  It is also a great way to start teaching children about directions and distance.  I am hooked and find myself hunting for Geocaches when I am running errands.
GPS for Geocaching
So, What is Geocaching?
Geocaching is the 21st century treasure hunt that kids and families can enjoy together.  According to  it  is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache’s existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS unit can then try to locate the geocache.
Magellan eXplorist GC GPS

The Magellan eXplorist GC GPS provides a user-friendly experience that helps a novice geocacher discover the world of high-tech treasure hunting, and sophisticated features to give an experienced seeker an advantage in the field. The lightweight outdoor handheld GPS, with a 2.2-inch color daylight-readable screen, is pre-loaded with 999 of the most popular geocaches in the world, and is capable of holding 10,000 downloaded geocaches. For the first time, users can customize their eXplorist GC GPS with National Geographic TOPO maps or DigitalGlobe satellite imagery. Magellan has also enhanced the eXplorist GC main screen with a new, easy-to-use menu of features to give users an intuitive presentation of options for navigating through geocaches, waypoints, maps and other tools.

What do you find in a geocache?

Inside a Geocache

In every geocache is a log to sign with your geocaching handle.  Some geocaches are micros or nanos and only have a log to sign.  Others are larger and have items to trade.  You should always trade for equal value or leave an item of higher value.  Often the items are small toys or gift bag items.  We have also found plant seeds, a compass, money and more.  Kids love to bring and item and trade.  There are also items called travel bugs that can be taken and moved to another cache.  The object is to see how far it can travel and the movement is tracked on  There are really so many great lessons that can be taught to kids through geocaching.

The first day we got our Magellan eXplorist GC we were able to get out and find 3 geocahes in our neighborhood.  Geocaches can be anywhere.  Some are in shopping plazas, town parks or in the middles of the woods.  We love the variety and they fact that we can find at least one anyplace we go.  After explaining geocaching to a friend she ordered and eXplorist and started geocaching with her daughter.  It is fun and addictive!

Where will you look for geocaches?

A Magellan eXplorist GC was provided to facilitate this review.  All opinions are my own.

Polly Pocket Zipline Adventure Pool to the rescue!

Disclosure: I participated in a campaign with  Mom Central Consulting for Polly Pocket toys. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

steri strips on chin

It’s summer, it’s hot, my kids want to swim all day long.  We have a pool here at the house and we’re doing 6 weeks of lessons this year.  For my littlest one, this all came to a screeching halt on Wednesday night- she slipped in the shower and split her chin open on the tub.  She’s healing nicely and will have a thin scar under her chin, but we’re ok with that, really just relieved she didn’t do permanent damage to her jaw, teeth or cheeks (she cut the insides of her mouth up a lot as well).  What ISN’T going well is the “no swimming for 5 days” thing.  My little one adores the water.  She wants to be in it and she’s not really understanding that no swimming for 5 days really means NO swimming for 5 days.

Polly Pocket Zipline Adventure Pool has saved the day, my friends.  My little one  may not be able to swim but a fun new toy with tiny dolls and animal friends that also includes can include water? SCORE.   Polly, a puppy and a monkey can all take turns on the zipline, hanging in the hammock, sliding down the slide into the pool…and more.  Water play with dolls in a pool is a little less upsetting than no swimming at all for my girl, and I’m so thankful for this Zipline Adventure Pool set!

polly pocket zipline adventure pool

Why do we love Polly Pocket toys? They are tiny, they are fun, and several of the sets have little suction cups on the pieces so that  they stay in place.  They are small enough to easily pack for  a trip but big enough that 2-3 kids can play together and not be on top of one another. My kids love having the toys at their level, especially since they don’t seem to be where the cat can get ONTO them and knock them over like she does with everything else in the house.  I like that when we want to move the set or take it down to bring someplace , there won’t be damage to the wall or paint.  Parent friendly, house friendly, and kid friendly for sure! My kids love dramatic play and spend hours creating elaborate stories to act out with one another- often times, the Transformers guys come for lunch at Polly Pockets, and vice versa.  We’re equal opportunity toy players here. :)

Not only are these toys fun and make for great gifts, they are also on SALE right now on Amazon- and you can shop right here, without even leaving this page, to grab them from Amazon!

Maple Sugar Toast with Fruit = Easy Summer Breakfast #CookwithSpreads

This is a sponsored post about Maple Sugar Toast written by me on behalf of Unilever. Since discovering the different ways you can cook with spreads, I’m finding I’m reaching for this in the fridge when I’m cooking more an more…my kids have even invented their own recipe using a spread! We have a new favorite breakfast around here- it’s quick, it’s easy, and includes 4 simple ingredients.  Maple Sugar Toast and whatever fruit you want on the side!  What you need: bread (toasted), Brummel & Brown Spread, and some Maple Sugar!
maple sugar toast
The best part? The kids can do this all on their own (if they are little, you can toast the bread for them) and it’s no muss no fuss.  Here’s my oldest making some herself!

I haven’t cooked with spreads in a long long time prior to this campaign. Since rediscovering them at Walmart, and knowing they have less saturated fat than butter, I’ve been finding myself looking to see what other varieties we can use in recipes here at home. I’m finding that I do like to saute veggies a lot with a spread, and since the family isn’t complaining, I know they must like it too!
making her own maple sugar toast
I haven’t yet used a spread in my baking so that’s next on my list- I’m thinking when we’re done with this awful heat wave we’re having I may just do some fresh bread with the Brummel & Brown spread. I have a milk loaf I make that calls for melted butter and I’m just going to swap it out for the spread. I think it’ll be delicious and with no cholesterol, healthy for our hearts.

Cooking your favorite recipes using Unilever buttery spreads is a deliciously smart move. With 0g trans fats per serving, less saturated fat and fewer calories than butter, cholesterol-free spreads are a better option.

Movie Date Night with pizzeria! from DiGiorno #DiGiornoPizzeria

This is a sponsored post about the new pizzeria! by DiGiorno through by affiliation with SheSpeaks.  Sometimes the best date nights happen just 100% by accident.  We had the best date night ever last week and we didn’t even leave home, weren’t doing anything in particular. It was a busy day and we did a quick dinner for the kids, got them to bed and realized we had no desire to order take out as planned and go pick it up, and delivery options are limited around here and we were just “meh” about it all.  Then I remembered I had some DiGiorno Pizzerias in the freezer downstairs and suddenly, dinner was a go.The night was saved- our other option was nachos with american cheese and stale tortilla chips (thanks for leaving the bags open, kids!!) We’ve had these pizzas in the freezer for a few weeks now- Four Cheese and a Pepperoni- but these are kind of a fancier pizza and I wasn’t wanting to share with the kids.  Do we have to share everything with them?  I say nay.

digiorno pizzeria

Anyway, we popped the pizzas into the oven, threw together a salad, poured a glass of wine for me and a beer for him and sat down for a romantic dinner.  About three bites in we were giggling like middle schoolers unsure of what to talk about- we really just wanted to veg out together and watch a movie, so we moved into the living room and watched what may be the worst movie ever?!  (The Big Year – and I’m sad to say that. I love Steve Martin. But this was just bad. And sad).  We had a good time laughing at what wasn’t funny through the whole movie to the point where my belly hurt from laughing at how ridiculous we were being….and it ended up being one of the best nights we’ve had in a year!

digiorno pizzeria

New pizzeria! from DIGIORNO starts with a crust that’s golden crispy on the outside, soft and airy on the inside and drizzled with extra virgin olive oil. The crust is topped with a new flavorful sauce made with vine-ripened tomatoes, garlic and herbs – then finished off with premium quality meats, cheeses and vegetables. This pizza offers the flavor and texture of true pizzeria-style pizza fresh baked right in your own oven. These new pizzas have no artificial flavors and a preservative-free crust.

pizzeria digiorno

New pizzeria! from DIGIORNO is taking pizza to the next level. The product is available in four varieties that bake up hot and delicious in your oven in just over 20 minutes:

pizzeria!™ from DIGIORNO® Quattro Formaggi/Four Cheese features the perfect bubbling combination of mozzarella, fontina, parmesan and pecorino romano cheeses.

pizzeria!™ from DIGIORNO® Supreme Speciale offers a delectable blend of premium meats and vegetables including pepperoni, Italian sausage, red and green peppers and caramelized onions. (My husband can’t wait to enjoy this one. He loves his pizza with everything on it!!)

pizzeria!™ from DIGIORNO® Primo Pepperoni takes a classic to new heights, with the perfect combination of savory pepperoni and premium cheeses.

pizzeria!™ from DIGIORNO® Italian Meat Trio features an antipasto-inspired combination of premium meats including pepperoni, Italian sausage and Genoa salami. (I want to try this one next but I can’t find it yet in stores near me so I have to wait).

Quiet cleaning with the Bissell CleanView Deluxe Bagless Vacuum #cleanview #ad

This review of the Bissell CleanView Deluxe bagless vacuum with One Pass Technology is brought to you by our friends at Bissell through my affilliation with Mom It Forward.  We have a yellow lab mix and a kitten who both seem to feel like leaving pieces of their fur on every surface in our house is their job in life.  Add in a pretty big backyard that’s had inches upon inches of rain in the past month, plus 3 kids and a husband (plus me) who are constantly outside playing and working and gardening- and you have messy floors.  Now, we do have central vacuum, but I have this thing about carpet and rugs with central vac.  I still like my “regular” vacuums for my rugs and carpets. Which is how this review came to be.  The Bissell CleanView Deluxe with One Pass Technology arrived at my house just in time for a huge stretch of cold, rainy weather, and the end of school.  So it sat in the box, waiting patiently to be opened.  When things quieted down and I was able to get it together, I was happily surprised at how little time and effort the assembly took.  Five minutes, and that includes helping a kid get a cup of water during.  Easy, peasy.  I like easy!!  Bagless vacuums seem SO much cleaner and friendlier to the earth to me so that’s something I was anxious to check out with this vacuum.

bissell cleanview deluxe #cleanview

This vacuum is, without a doubt, the quietest vacuum I have heard in all my 39 years on this earth (why yes, I did just tell you my age!) and that says something.  We’ve owned a lot of vacuums between my husband and me- and together, at least 10.  None has ever been what I could call quiet.  This one is.  Or, quiet for a vacuum.  Especially on the carpet or rug, this machine is REALLY quiet.  Like I could have used it while a baby was napping and not woken said baby.  (Where was this vacuum when my kids were little? Where? Maybe I can have another baby to test my theory!)

bissell deluxe cleanview assembly #cleanview

There’s a dial to change the height settings for this vacuum.  Very simple to do and the dial moves with ease when you try to turn it.  I found for the rugs we have (area rugs) that the mid-dial setting worked best and then proceeded to be 1000% horrified at what this vacuum pulled up from our rugs.  We only have area rugs downstairs and most of our home is hardwood floors.  I vacuum almost daily, sometimes twice daily.  But LOOK at this.

bissell cleanview deluxe canister #cleanview

This is from vacuuming the 3 area rugs we have downstairs. That I’d vacuumed not 12 hours prior with our regular vacuum.

Gross, right?  But also awesome.  That’s not in my rugs anymore. It’s in the garbage.  NOT in my house.  The kids aren’t rolling around on a rug that has that ICK in it anymore.

bissell cleanview deluxe #cleanview dog hair

This powerful and lightweight bagless vacuum features new OnePass Technology™ which means you can spend less time cleaning and more time doing what you want to do. Unless you have a weird love of vacuuming. In that case, call me, and you can come here. :) But really- the One Pass Technology saves time but also delivers a powerful suction paired with an innovative brush roll that makes deep vacuuming happen with no more effort than your “other” vacuum and you can rest assured that your floors and especially rugs and carpets are definitely cleaner than before.  It also has a 27 foot long cord so you can probably get a lot more space vacuumed before you run out of cord.  In my house, you can do almost the entire first floor without unplugging.  That’s awesome.

  • Innovative brush design cleans on initial pass* for excellent carpet cleaning.

  • Includes Bottom Easy Empty™ Dirt Cup for added convenience.

  • Lightweight design is modern, uncomplicated and easy to maneuver.

  • On-board attachments include a 4” TurboBrush® tool for cleaning stairs, upholstery and hard-to-reach places, a 10” crevice tool for nooks, crannies and corners and an upholstery tool and 11” extension wand for added convenience.

  • The CleanView Deluxe offers a Multi Cyclonic cleaning system that helps maintain long-lasting powerful suction.

The BISSELL CleanView Plus vacuum with OnePass Technology is now available at major retailers with an MSRP of $89.99. The CleanView Deluxe is also available at major retailers, with an MSRP of $99.99.

Beating bedwetting blues for #BetterNights with GoodNites #pmedia #ad

This shop for bedwetting supplies is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and GoodNites, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #BetterNights

I was a bedwetter until the 4th grade. I’ve told you that before.  I remember my mom trying all kinds of things.  My body just wasn’t ready.  With my kids, I wanted low expectations for night training because of this. I didn’t want them feeling bad if they had accidents or just weren’t able to sleep in underwear at night. I remember all too clearly how much I hated the bedwetting.  I can still remember dreaming that I was using the bathroom- only to wake up mid-dream to find I was using the bathroom in my bed.  It’s not fun.

With my kids, they all day trained before they were 2, but night came much later for my girls.  My son was lucky and once things clicked, they clicked around the clock.  He’s actually not ever had an accident at night.  Day, yes, but never night.  On my lap? Yes. But not at night! With the girls, my oldest was 5 3/4 before she was able to successfully go all night without wetting.  She hated it, but all of the things we tried didn’t work.  With my littlest one, she’s almost there, I’m happy to say.  She’s turning 4 in about 6 weeks.

goodnites bed mats are discreet #betternights

What was recommended to us:

1. No liquids after 3pm. (This just won’t work for us. We all drink a lot of liquids all day, every day, and we tried it for 2 days- I felt so guilty and felt like it did nothing, except that we were depriving her of liquids).

2. Have your child go to the bathroom at least 2x between dinner and bedtime (we do that anyway)

3. Wake your child to use the bathroom before YOU go to sleep (I am OK with this one)

4. Limit your child’s fluid intake with dinner and nothing after.  (This is kind of ok, we don’t give the kids a lot to drink during meals anyway, mostly because it fills their bellies and I want them to fill up on food not drinks.  If it’s not, I will give them drinks after dinner, but minimal amounts)

goodnites bed mats collage #betternights

So what DO we do?

1. We stay positive.  The kids get frustrated at times and have shed tears many nights but we just keep talking with them about how our bodies do things when our bodies are ready.  NO pressure to be dry at night.

2. Limit fluids towards the end of the day when possible, and also when weather permits.  It’s supposed to be 93+ here the next 3 days and very humid. I’d honestly rather they stay hydrated and deal with accidents and be sure they are well hydrated.

3. Bring them to the bathroom when we go to bed.  This is a big one.  If you have a kid who won’t fall back asleep easily, this may backfire on you.  When they are little enough I just scoop them up and carry them into the bathroom.  Really, when kids are groggy and still half asleep, they are often at their cuddliest, so sneak in a snuggle.

4. No underwear to sleep- my mom always believed it was better to have some “air time” at night and never had us sleep in underwear- it also makes things a lot easier for a very sleepy kid to go to the bathroom, not having to worry about getting undies down in time.

5. Reassurance.  I guess this goes with #1 but I can’t say it enough.  I don’t know anyone who’d choose to sleep in a wet bed on wet sheets, and I can’t say I’d believe a child would make their bed and sheets wet on purpose. So if they have an accident, don’t make them feel worse about it.  Reassure them and don’t make a big deal of it.  As frustrating and annoying as it is for us to wash the extra laundry, and spend the time changing sheets at 4 in the morning when we have a big day the next day, it’s far more frustrating and upsetting to our kids.

goodnites bedmats #betternights

6. Find products like GoodNites Bed Mats or GoodNites Bedtime Underwear (find amoney saving coupon for GoodNites products !) and put them to use.  We are at the Bed Mats stage now, and since my daughter is an acrobatic sleeper, I have 2 bed mats under her sheets.  That way, no matter which was she ends up sleeping, things are covered.  We’ve also had a few sleepovers at our house at this point, and I’ve discreetly added the Bed Mats under the guests’ sheets for “just in case.”  That way if there IS ever an accident, the guest doesn’t have to worry that they’ve ruined our bed and I know I can just change things out super fast.  The Bed Mats are great for sleepovers away from home- hotels, Grama’s house, etc.

goodnites bed mats #betternights

We have used the GoodNites Bedtime Underwear, and like the Bed Mats, I still have some for boys and for girls here at the house just in case we need some.  I’d hate for a friend to be here and have to call home for something like that or have an accident.  I just remember so very well how hard it was being a bedwetter and I don’t want to make others feel that way.  When I was little, we had NOISY rubber sheets to sleep on top of  and/or plastic pants.  There weren’t disposable products nor were there discreet products.  Things were bulky and obvious.  As if the wetting of the bed wasn’t enough!

I’m usually grabbing the GoodNites products when I’m at Target. You know, if I happen to be there.  Or because I’m there at least once a week.  Either way.  But also, I like the pricing at Target, and combined with the coupon (see #6 above) they are an affordable option that helps kids to not feel quite as bad about needing some kind of absorbancy at bedtime. I don’t know how long they will have this, but with each package of GoodNites Bed Mats I have purchased to date, there’s been a coupon inside for your next purchase.

I do like shopping at Target for these because it’s not a special trip, the price is good, and they are easy to find.  I’ve looked at 4 different Target stores for the GoodNites products and each store seems to have them in an upper corner of the diaper/pullups/bedwetting shelves. They are easy to find but not so out in the open that kids need to worry or be upset that “everyone” will know their parents are buying products like this.

How do you help your kids to have Better Nights?

Disney*Pixar’s MONSTERS UNIVERSITY June 21st

Last night we were guests at a special premiere showing of Disney*Pixar’s MONSTERS UNIVERSITY.  My husband, 8 year old and I all were so excited to see the movie and it did not disappoint.  The main characters, Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are back and full of all their usual fun.  MONSTERS UNIVERSITY is the prequel to Monsters Inc. and tells the story of how Mike and Sully met while studying “scaring” at MU.  They were not best friends from the start but the films follows them all the way through to their partnership at Monsters Inc. Disney Pixar's Monster University

Monsters University Review

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY focuses on Mike Wazowski, who has dreamed of being the best “scarer” since he took at a field trip as a child to Monsters Inc.   The problem is that Mike (voice of Billy Crystal) is not very scary.  He studies hard and knows all the scaring tricks but he can’t scare anyone.  Sulley, voice of John Goodman, is a natural born scarer but does not think he needs to study.  MONSTERS UNIVERSITY follows their trials, tribulation and antics.  The movie will keep child and adults entertained for the entire 103 minutes (which includes the Pixar short BLUE UMBRELLA).  BLUE UMBRELLA is a great short and made me want to watch it again.

Screaming with laughter and fun, “Monsters University” is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”) and produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”). The film opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2013, and will be shown in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.  We got to see it in 3D and it was really cool.  This is a movie we will add to our DVD collection when it comes out.  Go on out and see Monsters University,  come back here and let us know what you think.
Who is your favorite Monsters Inc., Monsters University character?

Free, private video Websites with ProudOn TV #POTVFamily #ad

This is a sponsored post about  ProudOn TV,  a free, private video website where you can share your personal family experiences. I’ve long looked for a simple way to share personalvideos with loved ones near and far without having to use social media. Sometimes, the memories are private and aren’t for public eyes, or others eyes. I’ve found the solution and it’s called ProudOn TV.

ProudOn TV is a free, service which offers private video websites.   You can add on storage plans and traffic plans if you need them at cost.  I have a special code for you to get $60 in ProudOn TV credits so that you can enjoy added storage and traffic plans Simple enter FAMILYWEB3 for your credits!  Signing up takes a few seconds, and you’ll get an email as soon as your site is ready and set to go (this should take a few minutes- mine had a little bit of a glitch and mine took a few days to get going but it’s great now!!).

proud on tv welcome screenshot

If you are not one to share photos of your family on Facebook or other social media sites, this service is a great way to have the convenience of sharing on social media without the concern that others may be able to view or reshare your photos or videos without you knowing. There are multiple ways to protect privacy using ProudOn TV. You can allow only people whom YOU invite to view the video content on your site, either via email or Facebook.  But you can also set so that people who are in your videos are able to share with friends and family as well.  For me, I have a surprising number of friends and family (Lisa, I’m looking at you right now, my dear) who are not on Facebook, nor Twitter, nor Pinterest.  So for them to be “invited” to view things via Facebook won’t be a positive for them.  Being able to share things without having to send individual emails or bog down mail servers will make those who aren’t using social media to be able to do what many of us take for granted.

proudon tv video settings

There are two main options when you sign up- The Family Website, which is only viewable by those whom you invite directly through an email or Facebook. It also means that those who aren’t ON social media sites but do use the internet can access and enjoy those adorable 3920432 videos you took of the kids last month.  Or the dog. Oh wait. I mean the ones I took. You can also change the order of the videos as you upload them, so if there’s one you want lots and lots of attention on, well, you can keep it up top.  Sometimes you need those accolades, right?

There’s also the Portfolio Website, for the more tech savvy videographers in the world (aka, not me!).Bloggers, this one may be for you- you can use your blog name for your ProudOn TV site name and tie the blog and your Portfolio site together! This may be a great way for Vloggers to get their content out. For those who aspire to greater things than just quick shaky videos like I make, you really may want to check this option out.  You can customize your page to match your blog design if you want- there are tons of color themes and layouts!
