Lately I have been getting excited about cleaning products and tools.  I am not sure when this paradigm shift happened because when I was growing up I was know for my messy bedroom.  I always helped my mom with chores and we had a very clean house but the door to my room often remained closed.  Years later  as a wife and a mom, I find joy and serenity in a clean and organized house.  So, YES I get excited to see a brand new Hoover Windtunnel Air Bagless Upright show up at my front door.

Hoover Wind tunnel bagless Upright vacuum Special Hoover.com 30% promo code Friends14

When I think of vacuums the first name that comes to my mind is Hoover.  Hoover has been around for more that 100 years and they know what customers want.  The WindTunnel® Air™ Bagless Upright is lightweight (12.4 pounds) , very effective and has a HEPA filter.  This vacuum is great for my household which consists of two adults, one 7 year old, a cat and a dog. We are constantly tracking in dirt and leaves.  My sweet dog, Beta, sheds more than any dog I have ever seen.  So having a lightweight and easy to use vacuum is important to me.

The WindTunnel® Air™ Bagless Upright was very easy to assemble.  I had to slide the  wand into place and pop the attachments onto the back.  That was it!  No need for tools or a hour spent assembling.  Thank you Hoover!

The first task I put the WindTunnel® Air™ Bagless Upright to was the mat by the back door.  This is the door that we use to bring the dog in and out, my sons goes outside through this door and my husband’s office is out back.  I turned the vacuum on and turned on the brushroll.    In under 20 seconds, I was done and there was a noticeable difference.   The brushrool can be turned on and off with a button, for different surfaces.  We have mostly hardwood floors so it is nice to be able to turn it off so crumbs and dust does not fly out the back.

We passed the LISTERINE® SMART RINSE® Sweet Smart Oral Care Challenge! #SweetSmarts

barbie tooth brushIf you remember, we started the LISTERINE® SMART RINSE® Sweet Smart Oral Care Challenge a few weeks ago.  I wasn't sure how this would go- I have had a lot going on myself with family things and was a bit nervous that I'd forget.  As it turned out, I didn't need to worry.  The handy little calendar we were keeping track on was like a magnet for the kids and often they'd ask if THEY could mark of our brushing sessions themselves!

listerine sweetsmarts oral challenge

One thing that was hard for us in my house was the SMART RINSE– simply because my littlest one is only 3 and was very upset that SHE wasn't allowed to rinse, because she's a “big girl” now.  At 3 she is clearly not ready to swish a rinse around and spit it out- but when she's got an idea in her head, watch out world.  I came up with a compromise- I add a splash of the rinse to a cup of water, and I brush her teeth with it.  This way I know she's not getting a lot, but she thinks she is getting to be a big kid and is happy.  She's also been working very hard to perfect her spitting technique (what child doesn't think spitting is fun?)!

I was surprised at how easily the kids adjusted to the 3 step process of the Challenge.  Floss, brush, rinse.  We haven't done flossing without missing a few times, to be quite honest, but for the most part, we have.  The kids love flossing.  They view it more as digging for “treasure” and the treasure= sugar bugs.  I'm just glad they are glad to be learning more about taking care of their teeth.

Halloween passed just two days ago.  We were still without power so we were invited to a friends' house for lunch, and managed to not have candy…but after the kids' naps, the activities began, and lots of sugar was enjoyed by all.  Of course we did a very thorough brushing before bed…but, as it does every year, the candy sits taunting all of us.  In the interests of trying to be proactive about their teeth, a few years ago we began to offer the Candy Witch- aka Switch Witch- to the kids.  A few days after Halloween, if the kids leave their candy out in it's container, at bedtime, the witch will come at night.  When the kids wake up in the morning, they'll have a treat for them where the candy was.  It's usually a small token- something like we'd put into a stocking.  The remaining candy is brought to a local food bank or sent over to our troops.  Win, win all around.  It helps keep the kids from eating too much sugar, they still get the trick or treating fun, and we get to share our treats with others.

It also keeps their teeth safer.  Something that I think about often, especially knowing now that I am aware that oral disease is the number one chronic illness for children in the USA.  That's alarming to me, and so very preventable.  This is such an important issue, and we need to work to educate ourselves and our children about the importance of good oral care.

I am really liking the Smart Rinse for ME- my husband can tolerate rinsing with just about anything, but I can't do rinses that are really strong, or super “spicy” so I tend to use the kids' versions.  They are milder and just less likely to make me, well…react.  I'm swishing right along with the kids!

Bronx Zoo – A great family adventure!

I recently took my first visit to the Bronx Zoo with my kids. We decided to go in the fall while the weather is nice and WOW was it fun. It was a really great time of year to visit the zoo. Most of the animals were out and about, nobody was too hot or too cold and we were able to walk around for hours before the whining set in! The zoo itself is very clean and the staff was very friendly. We did need to refer to our map quite often, as the layout was a little bit confusing. My children really enjoyed the tiger and rhinoceros exhibits. They were able to get an up close and personal look at the animals. We really enjoyed seeing the tiger cubs frolicking and the rhinoceros running in his enclosure! We drove about 2 hours each way. It was a really fun day trip and one that I plan on doing again soon. There is so much more that we need to discover at the zoo. My kids had a great time and are still talking about their visit. It was a really great experience and one that I look forward to doing again!

You could easily take 3 or 4 trips to the zoo and still have more to see. It would be fun to split the zoo up into 4 areas and focus on just one area per visit. This would make it very manageable for little ones. In addition to fun animal exhibits, the zoo had fun shops, concession stands and live shows! Think about getting a membership to the Bronx Zoo, your family will love it!

Guild Wars 2 Tyria Guide

Cooking with Kids is so much fun I wrote a book about it! #LittleChefs

little chefs projectWell, I wrote part of a book.  Contributed to a chapter.  But I did!  I'm proud to say I'm one of 40 amazing bloggers who came together for the very first crowd-sourced ebook designed to help get you cooking with kids, the Little Chefs Project!  is all about cooking with kids and includes tips, tricks, recipes, experiences, resources, and more. Sections include the following:

  • Feel Like a Kid Again
  • Teachable Moments
  • Everyday Fun
  • Family Time
  • Fun with Flavors
  • Family Traditions
  • Additional Resources
  • Chef Boyardee Timeline
  • Contributing Bloggers

The chapter I'm included in is  “Everyday Fun” and I couldn't be happier.  I'm not gourmet. I'm not fancy. I don't create edible works of art (unless things are meant to look “meh” frequently).  But I do love having my kids in the kitchen with me and having them involved in cooking and baking.

My family may not be gourmet, but we do LOVE to spend time cooking and baking together. Almost every Saturday morning is spent making pancakes “from scrap” together- my husband lines the kids up at the end of the island in the kitchen and gives each a task- we do the griddle part, but the kids are all there helping to measure, mix, etc.  It's a mess and it takes forever to both make the “cancakes” and clean up, but no one minds.  We're all together in pajamas, cooking together and making memories.  We even clean up together (which is never as much fun but also necessary).

I have a lot of people in my life who don't cook with their children- maybe it hasn't occurred to them, maybe they don't feel they have the time, I'm sure there are many reasons. I feel it is important, and teaches kids so much- and it really is a great bonding experience.  Once you let go of expectations and just let yourself enjoy it, you can just have fun!  The entire Little Chefs project was designed to share how real-life moms (yours truly included!) have their kids help in the kitchen- and we're not models, we're not perfect- we're just everyday moms like you doing the best we can.  Real photos of real kids, in real kitchens (not even perfect kitchens!) cooking real things.  (In my case, a REAL simple recipe!).  There are so many great tips and suggestions- I definitely think you should check it out!  Plus, I want to know what you think of MY tips in the book!

What are your suggestions for having kids help in the kitchen?

I am participating in the Chef Boyardee Little Chefs program in conjunction with The Motherhood and I’ve been compensated for my time.  Thoughts and opinions here are 100% my own.

Skylander’s Giants Starter Kit

One of THE hottest games and gifts this season is the brand new Skylanders Giants! The original Skylanders Spyro's Adventure was released last year around this time, and it was a big hit among many. Right now Spyro’s Skylanders Adventure is the number 1 selling game and highest selling action figure in the country – beating out brands like Star Wars and Batman. It has been quite the game, and I believe Skylanders Giants will do the same. It has become my boys' absolute favorite video game. On October 21, 2012, Skylanders released a second game: Skylanders Giants. It is kind of like a sequel if you will.

Check out a trailer of the new Skylanders Giants, below:

That's not all! I have teamed up with 4 AMAZING bloggers: Couponers United, Adventures of a Couponista, Enza's Bargains and This Mama Loves Her Bargains, to bring you a giveaway of the Skylanders Giants Starter Kit. You do not need to own any previous versions of the game, to play this one. We are giving you the whole kit! The winner will get to choose their choice of gaming console! Giveaway is open to the US only and will end at 12:01am ET on 11/14. To enter, fill out the rafflecopter below.

Teach your daughter to keep track of her periods

u by kotex tween products

It's almost inevitable that your daughter will at some point start getting her period.  We as adults have a few ways to approach this, with facts and information and open dialogue, or an as-you-go approach.  If you hadn't noticed, I'm in the educate and and talk about things camp.  My daughter, at 7, is aware that women get their period, and that there are special products she'll need when the time comes for her to have her period.  I give her as much information as I feel she can handle as a 7 year old.  As she gets older, and especially as her body starts to show signs of starting to have monthly cycles, I'll give her more information.

One thing that I will do is to teach her how to start keeping track of her cycles- mood changes, bloating, bleeding, spotting, etc.  One simple way is by making notes on a calendar, although in this day and age of technology, she may very well keep track on the calendar on her phone, her iPod, or even with an app designed for exactly this purpose.  Keeping track on a calendar gives visual cues and reminders for both your daughter and for you.   Did you know that you can visit Kotex for more tips and ideas- and be sure to visit U by Kotex for tips and ideas specifically tailored for Tweens!  U by Kotex would be a great site to introduce your daughter to- even if she's not fully open to chatting with you about her period, she can look around and find that there are so many others experiencing the exact same things she is- it may end up helping her to feel more comfortable in opening up to you!

I wrote this review while participating in a Brand Ambassador Campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of U by Kotex Tween and received products to facilitate my post and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

The Perplexus Review – Holiday Gift Guide

Have you seen the new Perplexus maze game from PlaSmart?  I have a feeling that this going to be BIG this holiday season.  This fun toy requires critical thinking, fine motor skills and NO batteries!  Great for kids ages 6 and up.  I was SO excited with the folks at Plasmart agreed to send me the original Perplexus.  My kids were immediately intruiged when they saw this colorful orb.  In fact, I had to set up a timer and organize a line so that all 3 of my kids got equal time playing.  They had a blast with this thing!  There is a small metal ball that must be maneuvered through the maze in the ball.  You are guided by small numbers on the track.  The concept is easy, the game is challenging!  I love that you can play this game as a single player or make it into a multi player game.

Here are the details:

PERPLEXUS is a maze game where players maneuver a small marble around challenging barriers inside a transparent sphere. Unlike traditional flat-surface mazes that are composed of one path, PERPLEXUS houses various challenging tracks with 100 barriers providing a frustrating three-dimensional experience. Players select the track they would like to attempt and must work with gravity to carefully shift, flip, and twist the sphere to guide the marble. Players can race each other or the clock.

There are many fun ways to play PERPLEXUS. It works as both a single player game and as a multi-player competitive game.

HOW TO PLAY… the basics

  • Roll the ball to one of the starting points, numbered 1 2 or 3 (we suggest starting with #1) If you can´t find them…. put PERPLEXUS down and slowly back away!
  • Flip, twist and spin PERPLEXUS to move the ball along the numbered path. When you fall off the track…. cuz it´s gonna happen…. just start over!!!
  • If you make it to the end, pat yourself on the back… then go get the next PERPLEXUS challenge!

The Perplexus is at the top of my list for holiday gift ideas.  No assembly is required, the game is nice and QUIET, reasonably priced and provides endless entertainment for anyone over the age of 6.  In fact, I am thinking of getting one for my elderly grandparents!  Perplexus offers the maze in the following styles:  Original, Rookie, Epic and Twist.  Get one this holiday season and your entire family will be hooked!

Follow Perplexus on Facebook for the latest information and updates.  Perplexus Original retails for $18.89.  You can find a local vendor here.

Plasma Bike Review – Holiday Gift ideas!

Many of you may remember our review of the fabulous PlasmaCar from Plasmart last year. We have had so much fun with this toy that we immediately thought of them for this years Holiday Gift Guide. They have some GREAT new products that we were so excited to try out. The Plasma Bike is a great new balance bike that is perfect for the younger crowd (18 months to 4 years). There are many balance bikes on the market but the Plasma Bike has some unique features that sets it apart from others. The Plasma Bike is low to the ground and has extra thick wheels which makes it easy for young ones to balance. It works great as a training bike/balance bike.  Both my 18 month old and my 3 1/2 year old love this bike!  In fact, my 3 year old has become so good on this balance bike that he is almost ready for a big boy bike WITHOUT training wheels.

“No batteries, gears or pedals – just a fun, encouraging and progressive start to bicycle riding.

Its unique design encourages balance, coordination and motor skill development while offering a fun ride.

Children as young as 18 months can enjoy the freedom of riding without the added complication of training wheels or anxiety of having to hold their balance too long, too early. Unlike most balance bikes, wide wheels assist children in keeping PlasmaBike upright in a stopped or stationary position, giving children added confidence and promoting self-esteem. The wide wheels and limited steering range enhance balancing capabilities and provide a smoother transition to a conventional 2 wheel ride.

Weighing less than 8lbs, it’s lightweight and transports easily to playgrounds or when the kid power tuckers out!

Sleek, unique look designed and made in Europe.

Supports up to 25KG (55lbs).”

This bike has been a lot of fun.  If you are looking for a nice holiday gift for that little one in your life this is a GREAT idea.

The Plasma Bike retails for $78 and can be purchased on Amazon.

Holiday Gift Guide 2012 – Playmobil Advent Calendar Giveaway and Review

Christmas is quickly approaching and it's time to start thinking about holiday traditions and gifts for the kids!  I just love celebrating the holidays with my kids.  It's just so special to see the excitement and delight in their eyes.  This is why I try to incorporate a lot of family traditions into our holiday season.  One of my favorite traditions is the Advent Calendar.   I always buy one of those cheapo numbers at the store that has a piece of chocolate in it for every day.  This is fun, but I was looking for something a little more substantial and interactive.  Luckily, I ran across  the Playmobil F orest Winter Wonderland Advent Calendar.  This cute little calendar comes complete with a cardboard background and a box numbered with each day.  Upon opening the numbered day your child will discover a cute playmobil character to add to their woodland themed set.  So adorable.

I know that my kids will be so excited to reveal their daily surprise.  It's so fun to build your scene as you go.  The characters in this set are winter woodland themed, so they will be played with long after the holidays are over.  This advent calendar is cute, reasonably priced and a great additional to your family traditions.  You could easily recylce this set year after year by saving the pieces in numbered bags.

The Playmobil Advent Calendars are available in the following themes:

Pirate Treasure Cove, Princess Wedding, Forest Winter Wonderland, Christmas Post Office and Dinosaur Expedition.

I love that I can use this set to teach my children about the season, as well as incorporate counting/learning and tradition into our day!   This set is so cute and whimsical.  Did I mention that there is even a day that has a hedgehog and her baby hedgehog!  Adorable.  I kind of have a thing about hedgehogs.  I love them!

I highly recommend checking out this advent calendar if you have a little one in your house.  It's great for boys and girls.  It retails for $19..99 and can be found wherever Playmobil is sold.

I was also lucky enough to try out the VERY cool Pirate Adventure Island:

Pirate Adventure Island

with fire-code-puzzle to open the treasure cave. The fire-code indicates the place  to look for the magic coins with the RFID-Chips. An adjustable bamboo-maze, dangerous barriers and many secret hiding-places make the hunt more difficult. When placing the  coins in the right order  on the relief with the RFID-detection in front of the treasure cave, the cave will open and you can grab the treasure   Size: 70 x 55 x 28 cm (LxWxH)  Retails $129.99″
I got this set for my almost 4 year old son who is very in to pirates.  I wanted to get him a pirate set that wasn't too scary and this one is perfect.  I always love the look of the playmobil characters.  So cute and kind of nostalgic.  I also like how poseable they are.  This Pirate Adventure Island set is ENORMOUS!  Truly a great value for $129.99.  The box is huge and once opened there are a LOT of components.  This means a lot of fun for your little one, but also a lot of assembly.  I would warn those of you with babies that there are a lot of little pieces in this set, so beware.  That being said, we were able to set this up in a baby free area of our home.  My little guy went to town!  Hours upon hours of entertaintment.  He enjoyed not only the setup, but the play afterwards is immensely entertaining.  Because there are so many components, your little guys imagination can run wild. There are pirates, boats, secret coins, light up components, secret caves and codes to solve.  I personally love the palm trees and parrots.  I will definitely be keeping this set to pass along to my other kids.  Right now, both my 6 and 3 year play together with this toy quite nicely.  A GREAT investment for any child that likes pirates and definitely a holiday recommendation from me!
One of our readers will win their own Playmobil Advent Calendar!!! ($19.99 value)

The Children’s Place has GREAT Costumes Available

I’ve got a deep love for The Children’s Place.  Great quality clothing, affordable pricing, so the adults are happy, in comfortable styles and colors that the kids are glad to wear.  This even extends, at this time of year, to Halloween Costumes (although if your kids are like mine, they’ll enjoy costumes all year round and not just Halloween).  This year, both my girls are obsessed with fairies and everything about them.  When I got to see the fairy costume from The Children’s Place, I knew I’d have a hard time not getting it for both girls.

the childrens place halloween costume

The tulle colors on this costume are great.  Not “just” pink and purple- and not just pastels.  Perfect for appealing to both the littler girls, and the bigger girls alike.

the childrens place fairy costume

We really like how this costume is more a dress with tulle accents- it makes it easier to wear and move around in.  Plus the layers of the tulle make for a very twirly costume.  This is a necessity in my house, of course!

Of course, once this costume is on, it’s going to be hard to get your child to take it off….

the childrens place fairy costume twirl

I have a feeling these fairy costumes are going to be, as so many other costumes in our house, loved to pieces.  My son’s on his third Spiderman costume – he’s worn two in the past year until they literally just kind of disintegrated.  I’m ok with spending money like this on costumes because I know my kids will wear them for a long long time! I also have a feeling my girls will be wearing these fairy dresses at Disney World when we go this winter!

These costumes are priced at $34.95, and come with the wings shown.  The wings are made with a generous amount of elastic that’s covered with a coordinating fabric so the wings are the perfect complement to the dress itself.

I’m seeing that these dresses are sold out online so if you see them in your local store, GRAB THEM.  There are still several other costumes still available like the Dinosaur, the Princess, the Skeleton (cute not scary), the Sunflower and the Peapod.  They are also on sale!

What are your kids going to be for Halloween this year?

Thanks to The Children’s Place for the costumes!  Opinions are my own of course!
