We are UNJUNKING Halloween this year! #GetUnreal

unreal candyWe recently received a huge box of chocolate deliciousness in the mail from Unreal Candy.  As much as the fat girl in me wanted to hoard that chocolate and share with no one, I had a mission….to have a little part-ay and introduce some friends to the wonderfully chocolate deliciousness that is Unreal candy.

unreal candy candies

What IS Unreal?  Well…it all started with a boy named Nick who wanted to know why Halloween candy has to be unhealthy.  Once he and his brother learned that candy isn’t made with junk to make it taste better, they started to UNJUNK candy…and now we have UNREAL candy.  It’s nice to know there aren’t artificial colors or flavors in the candy- nor are there hydrogenated oils.  Still candy, still chocolate deliciousness, still with calories.

Everyone loved the samples they received.  We (parents) did notice as a group that some of the chocolates almost tasted a tiny bit salty and agreed that this was a great thing.  I had some extras so I sent them in to my kids’ teachers (I assure you, no chocolates were left uneaten) for them to share.  By lunchtime I had three emails thanking me and double checking where they could purchase more. Not ONE kid made a comment that this candy tasted differently than another.  They were all so excited we were letting them eat candy!

unreal candies

Another fun thing we all seemed to love about the Unreal candies is the colors- more natural, more earthy.  The kids found it “cool” and the moms thought it was great to have less artificial anything in something for kids!

We’re taking the LISTERINE® SMART RINSE® Sweet Smart Oral Care Challenge! #sweetsmart

listerine smart rinse challenge

My husband has some dental issues that are genetic.  I have a long-standing fear of dentists (Thank you, again, Dr. Gordon, for traumatizing me as a small child.  Boo, on you!).  The combination has us very diligent that our children learn the importance of good dental care from a very early age.  Dental care is one of those non-negotiable things  in our house.  Even with all of this, I will disclose here and now that I am NOT always great about flossing…or rinsing.  I’m a firm believer in being a model of behavior I want to see and am going to work very hard during the next few weeks to create a new habit- one that includes both flossing and rinsing every time I brush.  This is why we were eager to try the LISTERINE® SMART RINSE® Sweet Smart Oral Care Challenge.  We’ll be tracking our family progress on a calendar for the next few weeks- the challenge is to brush, floss AND rinse twice a day- ALL of us (well, rinsing for those of us over the age of 5) and keeping track.  They say habits are formed in 21 days so here’s hoping we create some awesome new habits together!

Anything to get kids excited about and understanding the importance of good dental care is something I want to be part of- and if it helps someone else to learn about or reaches someone new and helps them learn, then I consider that a pretty awesome day.  I was able to take part in a virtual chat with FERN INGBER, Founding President and CEO of America’s ToothFairy and  DR. KANETA LOTT, pediatric dentist last week.  Some of what they shared was very surprising- and alarming.  Here is some of what I learned from them!

Oral disease has become the #1 chronic childhood disease.

Anyone else find this very alarming? My jaw dropped when I read that.  We need to spread the word.  There are so many programs and products out there that make this EASIER on us all- we just have to use them, take advantage of them, and spread the word.  The #1 chronic childhood disease.  Scary.  (I can remember with each of my kids a phase they’d go through where they would freak out and not want their teeth brushed.  It makes me wonder if this is where a lot of oral issues start- because we all know it’s a lot easier to give in to a screaming toddler.  I wanted to many times.  I have in fact…but not with dental care.  Teeth get brushed, at least twice a day.  Period).

  • 44 percent of American kids will suffer from pediatric dental disease before they reach kindergarten
  • Of the 4 million kids born each year, more than half will have cavities by the time they reach 2nd grade
  • 43% of Americans lack dental insurance
  • All in all, 16 million kids suffer from untreated dental disease
  • Kids should be brushing for at least 2 minutes and rinsing for 60 seconds
  • Even babies’ teeth should be flossed- as soon as they have teeth that touch together
  • If a pacifier falls on the floor and the parent “rinses” it in their mouth (guilty many many times over) you can give the child your periodontal disease
  • We need to help our kids brush until they are 8.  Especially those back molars- they can be hard to reach…I’ve heard so many parents tell stories of how they make brushing a game.  Hunting animals in your child’s mouth- being a superhero with a toothbrush and beating up sugar bugs….the list goes on- but it strikes me that so many of us realize the importance of good dental care.

Find FREE  songs to help your kids brush that entire 2 minutes at www.disney.com/phineasandferbmusic or www.barbie.com/listerinekids.

In 2011 alone, over 50,000 kids received critical oral health services (screenings, fluoride treatments, cleanings, sealants, restorative services) thanks to Johnson & Johnson’s contributions to America’s ToothFairy.

One way to get involved this season: Join Trick or Treat for America’s ToothFairy. Just set up a virtual page for Halloween, invite friends and family to join you, and take on the opportunity to help raise money to care for a child in need.

Will you join me and take this challenge?  Let’s get our families into GOOD dental habits now, and not later!

Magic Forest app review

magic forest logic based appI have found a really, really cute physics based app from Ola Games that 4 of us in my family cannot get enough of.  Magic Forest.  It’s cute, it has animals, there’s no voilence, no  questionable language, and has just enough challenge to keep you interested (at least until level 16, none of us can seem to get past that so I don’t know what comes next?!)  There are animals and fairies and creatures who need us to tap blocks out of the way to help get the animals home.  Very simple, and yet very tricky.  If you aren’t a logical thinker all of the time (me) this can be a big struggle for you.  I actually had a hard time with this game until I watched my 7 year old play for a while.  She kind of laughed at me when I had my A HA! moment.

One thing I have noticed about this game is how almost muted and earthy the graphics and colors are.  Not super flashy, not super bright- but still very easy to see and follow.  It’s a nice refreshing view in comparison to many apps we’ve played!

This game is definitely great for ALL ages.  It encourages both the use of physics concepts and logic- which means it’ll help kids to develop and hone these skills, but also help those of us who are maybe getting a little rusty to sharpen those same skills a bit.  I can’t help but think how much my dad would have loved a game like this even 2 years ago. He knew his memory was failing and tried a lot of different games to keep his memory and brain sharp.

Be warned now, because Magic Forest is addictive.  You’ll probably have to share your iPad or iPhone with the rest of your family if they don’t have their own device to play it on.

Teaching Kids the Power of Sharing

“Kleenex brand, America’s softest tissue, knows that the moments of unexpected thoughtfulness make all the difference.”

kleenex care kit

There are so many moments that matter in life.  So many, but I find the ones that stick with me the longest are the little ones.  My mom spent her life giving and doing for others.  She was an attorney, and she was a nurse, and ultimately, she combined the knowledge, skill and compassion gained with those two careers and found herself in a position to champion for those who are less able than others for a variety of reasons.  She learned at a young age that small acts have a very profound impact.  She was the one who taught me that the little things add up- it’s the little things that speak the loudest.  Sharing and giving of yourself doesn’t have to be a huge thing.  It can be as little as sharing a smile in a somber situation.  Dropping off a box of popsicles, some ginger ale, and a trashy magazine to a sick friend.  Bringing cookies to your elderly neighbor who’s often without visitors.  Calling someone just to say “hey I’m thinking of you!” can go a very, very long way.

mom and me

I’ve tried to follow in my mom’s footsteps and  show my kids the power of sharing.  One fun way we can do that is with Kleenex’s Softness Worth Sharing Initiative- especially with allergy season upon us yet again and cold season starting to rear it’s ugly head…we’re stocking up on Kleenex….and now we can take codes from OUR Kleenex and redeem them to send a fun Care Pack to someone special.

This program started in September and is so simple to participate in- simply visit yourlocal retailer, purchase a Kleenex brand bundle pack and redeem the code on the box. Then simply visit Kleenex.com and follow the directions to send a Care Pack to someone who needs a little care, while supplies last.

Things that we have done, or that my children have done recently, to show the power of sharing?

My daughter’s friend lost her dog to cancer.  I found out later that my daughter gave up her whole recess to sit and color with her friend at the nurse, simply because she knew E would be missing her dog.

My son loves “babies” (which means anyone younger than him).  He’s had a protective instinct since I can remember and I love seeing how he’s so careful to look out for his beloved “babies” even if they are really the same age as him.  I’ve watched him give up his turn for a favorite activity or toy, just because someone else wanted a turn.

Moments like these are the ones that make me proudest as a mother.

“I wrote this review while participating in an ambassador program by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of the Kleenex brand and received product samples and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Jingit pays YOU to watch ads (Here’s my experience) #jingit #cbias

Watch a video, take a survey, earn cash.  That’s Jingit in a nutshell.  Got a smartphone or tablet?  It just got easier to watch a video, take a survey, earn cash. If you are a Facebook user, you can sign up and login using your Facebook account – it takes a few seconds and you are good to go.  Quite simple.  Obviously if you are signing up without Facebook, it’ll take a bit longer, but it still won’t take long.  Once you have signed up, you can watch any available videos, take the survey with it, and start earning.

jingit screenshot cheerios

You can also  go to a store, and as long as your phone settings allow apps to find your location, you can scan UPC codes, answer questions, and earn more money. I was at a local store the other day and since I had no kids with me, decided that I’d see how Jingit worked on the go.  I had checked out the video viewing on my laptop and iPad already…I am always curious to see how things go on my phone, on the move.  Once I opened the app, Jingit searched my location and came up with a list of items/products I could scan and earn some money from.  An employee who was stocking items nearby asked what I was doing.  I explained what the app was, and that I was trying it out.  He was very intrigued and we scanned the graham crackers together.  Honey Grahams are a family favorite, and right nearby to where I was shopping, so I headed over.  Item scanned, answered a few questions, and I had .25 cents more in my account.  I scanned a few more items, happy at how simple this app was to use.  One thing I really like about Jingit is that the brands that are offered for earnings are brands we already tend to purchase like Elmer’s, or brands that we use to make S’mores.

I think Jingit has some great potential.  I don’t live in a very urban setting so I won’t have as many opps as others may have. I do wish I could get some more video opps, it’s been a few days. I’m sure there will be more in time.  I’m anxious to see what’s next for Jingit.  I’ll be armed with my phone and ready to scan and survey for money!  I do like that you don’t HAVE to have a mobile device to take advantage of Jingit, although obviously you can and will earn more with one.

Who’s Jingit? A tech start up company that allows great brands to pay you real, instant cash for paying attention to them. Because truly great brands should truly value your time.

Have you signed up yet?  I’m kind of looking forward to seeing where this goes- this could be some nice extra income for a lot of us!

Kick some RASH! With Boudreaux’s Butt Paste

boudreaux's butt paste logo

This post is sponsored by Boudreaux’s Butt Paste®, the effective diaper rash cream that treats and prevents diaper rash with every change. Let’s kick some rash!

If there is one thing that parents can ALL agree upon, it might be that diaper rash is not fun at all.  Not for the baby, and not for the parents or caregivers.  Sure, treatment methods may vary, but ultimately? If you find a diaper rash treatment that works for your child, you stick with it.  Always.  I know for me, once I knew what worked for my babies’ skin, there wasn’t much that could persuade me to try other products, brands, etc.  Having seen my little ones’ sore tushies and feeling like I wasn’t able to help them feel better wasn’t something I wanted to mess around with.

Boudreaux’s Butt Paste was a brand I tried for diaper rash treatment because the name caught my attention.  It’s a brand I love and use even today because it works great on my kids.  I still love the name.

boudreaux's butt paste giveaway prize pack

My kids all had diaper rashes, but my daughter’s first diaper rash was the most memorable.  I was so diligent about changing her frequently, and keeping her clean and as dry as possible, and like many diaper rashes, started as just a hint of redness on her diaper area.  I patted her dry and put a small amount of cream on her.  An hour later, I changed her diaper again. I was very surprised at how red her diaper area was even after I’d used a little bit of cream. This time, I decided we’d do some naked time on a blanket, and I let her “air” for a few minutes. I applied cream much more liberally after this and diapered her again, making a mental note to check her again in an hour.  Thankfully, things didn’t get worse, and a few days of applying diaper cream liberally had her good as new.  Other rashes we have had have been far worse,  thankfully only a handful of them- most were about the same.  I’ve tried to have quality diaper creams in the house that help to soothe tender skin and provide a barrier to wetness to keep that baby skin from getting worse and letting it heal. Like I said before, Boudreaux’s Butt Paste has always been a favorite brand to Kick some RASH! with!

Pepsi Müller™ Corner, Greek Corner and FrutUp Yogurts

muller yogurts

There’s a new yogurt here in the states that’s been loved in Europe for a long time.  Muller Quaker Dairy brings us  Müller™ yogurts in three varietie,  available at many local grocery stores here in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region of the US, and I couldn’t wait to bring them home to try with my family.  My kids love yogurt, and will often ask to eat it multiple times per day.  I’m always up for getting them new varieties to try.

muller yogurtThe three varieties are

  1. Müller™ Corner™
  2. Müller™ Greek Corner™
  3. Müller™ FrütUp™
muller corner with chocoballs
muller corner with chocoballsbites of muller yogurt
My kids love the “corner” varieties, especially the chocolate or crunchy varieties.  It’s fun to dump the pieces in and stir them around- and these aren’t really flavors we have seen before with typical yogurts we’ve seen in the store so it makes it more interesting for them. The ‘corner’ varieties also boast a 9g of protein– something that keeps the kids’ bellies full longer and gives them the energy they need to get through the day!   The yogurt is, as Muller promises, yummy – nice and creamy, and has a really smooth flavor.  I won’t lie, the kids love it.  I’m assuming the chocolate bits are only part of that equation, but with kids…you never know.  (I kid, I kid.  My kids are actually very particular about what kinds of yogurt they’ll eat and they devour the Muller).
loving her muller yogurt
The FrutUp variety has a fruit mousse on top and it is just delightful.  The Luscious Lemon is more like eating a lemon dessert than yogurt, which this mama likes- because my kids will think it’s a treat.
I can’t get over how creamy these yogurts are.  I’m very impressed with the quality of this product.  My husband was happy to find another brand that doesn’t taste low-fat (but is).  The flavors and varieties include standard favorites that seem to go across the board with all brands, but it’s also refreshing to see some new, different things on the shelf with these yogurts.  My family loves crunchy things, so we really like how many varieties include crunchy add-ins.
  • • Müller™ Corner™ and • Müller™ Greek Corner™ offer a new way to enjoy yogurt in an exclusive two-chamber with add-ins you can flip, stir or dip. Varieties include Strawberry, Blueberry, Crunchy Granola, Crispy Crunch, Choco Balls and Choco Flakes. The Greek-style varieties include Caramelized Almonds, Strawberry, Blackberry & Raspberry, and Honeyed Apricot.
  • • Müller™ FrütUp™ has creamy low-fat yogurt on the bottom with a vibrant layer of fruit mousse on top. Müller FrütUp is a new yogurt experience that you can scoop or swirl to your delight. With a delicious fruit mousse on the top of yogurt, there is nothing like it. Müller FrütUp varieties include Peach Passion Fruit, Splendid Strawberry, Blueberry Bliss, Radiant Raspberry, Luscious Lemon and Very Cherry.

Be sure to like Muller on Facebook and follow them on Twitter to keep up to date with their yogurts- and you never know when brands will share some coupons with their followers!!

Müller yogurt is made from reduced-fat, Grade A milk and is a good source of calcium and protein. It’s a delicious way to add delight to your day, with the nutritional benefits of yogurt.

Müller yogurt will be sold across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region, at most major retailers in the region. Visit our Facebook page Product Locator to find a store near you. The suggested retail price is $0.99 for Müller FrütUp and $1.29 for Müller Corner and Müller Greek Corner.

Müller™ provided me with product for sampling. Thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fantastic Floatables Review & Giveaway (5 winners)

fantastic floatables shark This is one of the most fun and festive posts I’ve gotten to write up on my site.  Today I’m going to share with you about Fantastic Floatables- new hovering balloon decorations that are reusable.  Fun, festive, easy to use, easy to store!  They are great for birthdays and any celebration really, but with October a few days away I keep thinking that these would be REALLY cool decorations for Halloween parties and celebrations!  An alien space ship hovering in midair?
fantastic floatables saucer
My three year old has let go of ever balloon she’s ever touched. We were at a restaurant, they gave her a balloon. As she’s uttering “Thank you” to the waitress, she let’s go.  Waitress gets her another.  She let go again.  I’m forever trying to tie them to her wrist or attach to her clothes but she freaks out and usually ends in someone screaming or crying.  Or both.  If she’s lucky enough to get it HOME, she’ll play with it happily but let it go and has to wait for someone else to pull it back down….over and over and over.  While not a big deal, it gets tiresome.  That’s why Fantastic Floatables work so well.  It’ll hover above the floor, instead of floating to the ceiling (I feel very, very bad for parents who have cathedral ceilings and cannot reach to retrieve lost balloons).  She can play happily and enjoy her balloon fun without stress or drama.
Fantastic Flotables has a really great selection of balloons- from basic shapes to funky spaceships and a whole bunch of familiar characters in between, there’s really going to be SOMETHING for just about anyone.  Smiley faces, fruits, nuts, Sesame Street, Angry Birds, animals, princesses, spaceships, aliens, and all priced UNDER $10.00
My kids ADORE these floatables.  They are pretty fun.  They are really fun with a kitten in the house, although kittens are not required for the fun.  It’s just amusing to watch our Sunshine kitty chasing things around the house.  (Does that ever get old)? One thing that’s so great about the floatables is that I can deflate them- so they are out to entertain, I can put them away and pull them out on  a rainy day, sick day, playdate, etc and they are like new again.  The whole “new toy” concept and all, I guess.  It works for us and it’s worked with the kids’ friends.  My kids like to brag that they know magic with the floatables, especially when they have friends who haven’t seen them before.  Of course, my three year old wants to bring her Belle into school for share day- not understanding that share toys have to fit into her backpack (rules).  We’re actually going to send in a few of these to her classroom anyway next month so she can share away then!

MY favorite feature of this product is that it’s reusable.  I hate buying balloons (well, to be honest, latex ones scare me, but the mylar balloons (or tin foil ones, as we say in my house) lose their helium and then there isn’t anything else you can do with them) because it seems wasteful.  The kids adore them and they are a lot of fun to have, and a GREAT way to decorate!   Fantastic Floatables gives us the best of both worlds- fun with balloons, and less waste.  Deflate, pack up, reuse whenever.
fantastic floatables saucers suspended
FIVE winners will each receive (almost) everything that’s needed is included with the Floatable, the balloons, – you will get 1 Alien Invader, 1 Spiral Galaxy, 1 Super Nova, 1 weight pack, and the instructions at a $21.00 ARV.  You will need access to helium (we love the one we got from Balloon Time last year and have purchased another since)!

Flatout Flatbreads make great pizza, panini, pinwheels and more!

We had a Flatout Flatbread Party earlier this week.  Several varieties of the Flatout Flatbreads, plus toppings and goodies galore.  Since the party was during the daytime, we did all kid-friendly options and didn’t go too crazy with options, but now that we’ve tasted and fallen in love with the Flatout line, we’ll be doing lots more experimenting with flavors and toppings and ways to incorporate the Flatout into our meals.  The Flatout Thin Crust flatbreads, available in Walmart stores since 9/22/12 are available in Spicy Italian, Rustic White or Heritage Wheat flavors.

flatout flatbreads

Everone LOVED these flatbreads.  The kids, the adults- we all did.  My dog may or may not have enjoyed a few nibbles himself.  Knowing that each flatbread has 7 grams of fiber had me smiling- fiber is a good thing, and something we try to be conscious of in my house.  The kids loved making pizzas, and doing their own thing, especially the three year olds who were with us.  140 calories, $2.98 a package, and 7 grams of fiber.  That’s a pretty good alternative to traditional bread in my opinion!

flatout flatbreads

I think the MOMS all agreed that one of the best things about these flatbreads is how quickly they are cooked, cooled, and ready to be devoured by the kids.  Since the flatbreads are, well, flat, they don’t have to be cooked for a long time.  That means they don’t get super hot.  The thinness also means they cool quickly- so when you are in a rush and the family is HUNGRY RIGHT NOW, you really can have them eating a healthy, nutritious meal in under 10 minutes.  THAT in and of itself makes me want to keep these stocked in my house, and they taste delicious- so I have double reason to keep them around.

flatout flatbreads

I do want to caution you that while delicious, the Spicy Italian variety is, indeed, spicy.  Spicy like the adults were quite surprised.  If you love spicy, you’ll love these, but be sure to taste them before letting the little ones bite into them.  The Spicy Italian is too much for my younger 2, although my 7 year old has inherited her dad’s tastebuds and declared it “awesome” and asked for some hot sauce…and then water.

flatout flatbreads heritage wheat I made my favorite kind of pizza with the Heritage Wheat flatbread- you simply spread a bit of barbecue sauce atop the flatbread, some diced up cooked chicken breast, and sprinkle cheddar cheese onto it.  We do often add broccoli and red onion on this pizza at home but I was outvoted at our party and stuck with chicken, sauce and cheese.  So simple and a little different than your everyday pizza options!

Now that I’ve had “kid friendly” Flatout Flatbreads…I’m anxious to have some more adult-friendly versions.  Jenni and I were discussing doing a flatbread with a spring mix on top, some pears or apples, gorgonzola cheese and a vinaigrette dressing.  More adult combinations.  I think for those who enjoy bagels and lox, the pinwheel would look very pretty with some cream cheese and lox rolled up with it!  These would also be delicious lightly toasted as a cracker!

What do you like to put on your pizza crust? Do you have other recipe ideas for flatbreads?
