“The Summer of Giving” with Tangerine Sky Productions Review and #Giveaway

natalie's arkWe love books in our family.  Fiction, non fiction, humor, spiritual, it’s all welcomed and loved.

From my 7 year old: Natalie’s Ark is about a girl named Natalie who  and her animal friends she meets as the dam in her town breaks: Nimbus the raccoon, Telsa the cat, Sadie the Opossum, Stella the Goose, and Skittles the Squirrel- all of whom help her to learn about what’s important and not to be afraid so much.

Amazon’s description of Natalie’s Ark: A dam above a small town threatens to burst and Natalie finds herself adrift in a rickety boat surrounded by animals plucked from the raging flood. Natalie’s journey leads her to discovery of faith, friendship, love and home. Suggested Age for readers: 8-12

Natalie’s journey after the dam breaks brings her, along with several new animal friends, to the realization that she needs to follow her faith, not her fears.

TSP doesn’t just write chapter books for tweens- they have also done some great videos, adult non-fiction,  picture books and illustrated storybooks.  All are written with the Colliers’ clear desire to produce quality, wholesome entertainment for the entire family.

Tangerine Sky Productions would like to send one winner one of their books (your choice), as well as a signed, suitable for framing, drawing done by Kevin Collier.  (retail value: $100)

Roger Nix President at Age Six – Support a hopeful children’s author!

First time children’s book author Nick Dazé, is in the final days (63 hours to be exact) of his campaign to raise funding to independently publish his children’s book Roger Nix President at Age Six.
The story is about kindergartener Roger Nix, an ordinary boy: Roger loves kindergarten, playing make-believe, and hanging out with his imaginary friends (a baby donkey named Jack and a baby elephant named Abe). But when he learns about the plans of Old Man Plee, a perennial presidential candidate, to shut down schools and send kids to work in factories as an austerity measure; Roger decides to run against Old Man Plee as a defender of “school and summer vacation, learning and imagination”. Of course Abe and Jack are there to help him every step of the way.
Nick Daze and his incredible Kickstarter campaign (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/787960356/roger-nix-president-at-six) have already raised nearly $22,000 and only has $8,000 more to go in order to put the book into production.  The book has been fully written by Daze and the illustrations beautifully crafted by Bill Robinson www.FlimFlammery.com . Each $30 pledge towards the Roger Nix campaign comes with a first edition hardcover copy of the book, delivered in time for the new school year this fall.  This is a timely story that is fascinating, engaging, and a thought-provoking read for both kids and parents written by a imaginative adult who was encouraged to explore his imagination as a child.
Here is an excerpt from the book:
Roger stood up quickly. He had something to say
With a wink from Jack and a trunks-up from Abe.
I’ll run against him,” Roger said with a shout.
I’ll run for president, have you no doubt!
To close school would be nothing short of a crime
You can’t fool all us kids, not all of the time.”
He stood on his desk and they all watched and wondered
As Roger kept talking, his voice boomed and thundered.
“We’ll beat him and keep all the schools as they are
Or make them way better. We’ll shoot for the stars!
We go to school so one day we’ll go far,
Not because it is easy–because it is hard!
We are KIDS! The whole point is to learn and have fun
And to use our wee noggins…
So Abe, Jack, and Roger got to work right away.
“That kid’s on to something,” his parents would say.
He made lots of speeches; he shook lots of hands
He toured a big factory that made rubber bands.
Then one night on the tube, to Old Plee’s disdain,
The news ran a story on Roger’s campaign.
“Roger Nix, daydreamer and ultimate kid,
Is gaining on Plee in his presidential bid.”
But everyone knew that sooner or later
Roger would have to be quite the debater.
Because one night soon, under some bright marquee
A debate would take place between Roger and Plee.

Mo Willem’s Pigeon and Pals: Complete Cartoon Collection, Vol. 1&2 DVD #Giveaway

MO WILLEM’S PIGEON AND PALS: COMPLETE CARTOON COLLECTION, VOL 1&2. came to DVD on April 17, 2012.  Mo Willem and his hilarious  children’s stories were an instant hit with everyone in my family, from the very first time we opened the cover of our first Mo Willem book, Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay up Late.  We were hooked, and are always delighted when Mr. Willem comes out with something new to delight his readers.  The kids find the stories funny, we adults find the stories funny, and it makes snuggling and reading with the kids that much more enjoyable!

Having Pigeon and Knuffle Bunny on our TV screen has been just as much fun as the beloved picture books that we’ve read hundreds of times.  The kids thought it was so much fun to watch the featurette- I think their favorite (maybe mine) was “Getting to Know Mo Willems.”

Across two discs and six stories, Willems’ tales – highlighted by “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” and “The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!” — jump off the screen in inimitable fashion! Enhanced by Scholastic’s ever-popular read-along function which helps to strengthen early reading skills, the sure-to-be-treasured collection also includes faithful and award-winning adaptations of other Willems’ best-sellers, including “Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale” (in both English and Spanish) and “Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity”, “Leonardo the Terrible Monster” and “Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed”. Made all the more enriching and engaging, PIGEON AND PALS also includes a multitude of bonus featurettes, as well as an interview with the author himself!

· Featurette: “Getting to Know Mo Willems”
· Featurette: “Animating Pigeon”
· Featurette: “Mo and Pigeon Visit a School”

Kohl’s Cares® for Kids with Eric Carle #Giveaway

Aside from the marvelous sales oh-so-very-frequently, one of my favorite things about Kohls is their Kohl’s Cares® for Kids program.  It isn’t just about getting excellent children’s literature at super low pricing ($5 for a hardcover picture book!!) or the super cute plush that go along with them, although that is awesome in and of itself.  The program sells kid-friendly merchandise, 100% of the net profits of which are donated to support kids’ education and health initiatives all across the US.  To date, over $180 million has been donated.  That’s a lot of money they’ve donated since the program began in 2000 and I applaud companies to have programs like this in place.

Right now, Kohl’s Cares® is partnered with Eric Carle, one of my all time favorite authors for children’s books!  As with all of the books and merchandise sold for Kohl’s Cares, each item is just $5.  Some of our family favorites are available, including Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, The Very Busy Spider, 10 Little Rubber Ducks, and a new-to-my-family story, Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too? which is just so sweet and I was very glad to add it to our collection.  The lamb plush that goes along with The Very Busy Spider is soft, snuggly, and beautifully done to echo Bill Martin’s rendition of a lamb from the story.  The note cards are my favorite item in this line- truth be told, I’ve purchased 3 other sets and tucked them away.  It’s the Very Hungry Caterpillar’s fault, not mine.  I can’t resist.

There’s also a “crazy about cookies” cookbook which will delight your tastebuds and make for a very sweet family afternoon if you want to bake some cookies with your little one and then snuggle up on the couch to read a story or two while they bake.

One of my readers will win a Kohl’s Cares prize pack including each of the books pictured here, the notecards, and one of the plush animals from this line (based on availability).

The Scholastic Store-Great Books at Great Prices #Giveaway 3 Prize Pack Winners!

I have a lot of love for books.  Fiction, non fiction, it doesn’t matter.  Children’s books are no exception.  I love them.  I am happy to say that my kids love them.  I love sharing books with them, and discovering new stories to share, rhymes to recite over and over again.  The Scholastic Store has such an awesome range of books- including some of our favorites, the I Spy series.  One of my favorite gifts, and one that my kids always receive, is the gift of a book.   My mom had a great love of books and I obviously inherited it from her!!  I love the Scholastic books because it offers a way to save a bit of money on the same titles you can find elsewhere.  Books are great gifts, they can be enjoyed over and over and over again, and they are easy to find, and affordable options!!  I love tucking a book in as an extra gift, too!! Be creative and fun!

We do a lot of I Spy around here- if not with the books, then in the car, at the dinner table, we play the game…I love that Scholastic continues to put out more I Spy books regularly. I will be very, very sad when they stop publishing them, although I find them as delightful the 100th time I read them as the first.  I Spy Christmas wasn’t in our collection (thankfully it is now) and I love going through it with the kids- or even better, when they all three snuggle on the couch and go through it just themselves.  It makes my heart all melty, plus they are teaching one another and helping one another.  I think having met Jean Marzollo last spring at our local school probably only served to make my love of I Spy grow deeper!! They even have Nintendo DS games  of ISpy!

There are books for babies and toddlers, the preschool crowd, the graders, even books for ages 13 and up.  Not sure what to get?  The Scholastic Store offers suggestions for your purchases based on ages, price ranges, toys, games, crafts, etc.  They have an entire section just of gift ideas.  What I just learned is that The Scholastic Store isn’t just online.  They are in New York City.  I will be there one day!! American Girl introduces Cecile & Marie-Grace Historical Characters

American Girl has introduced two different historical characters– Cecile Rey, an African American, and Marie-Grace Gardner a Caucasian, who “reach across the boundaries of race and calss to help their beloved city of New Orleans in 1853.”

I think its really cool that they are introducing two characters at once- and in such a great way.  I know my introduction to American Girl came long after I was done with dolls- when my niece Samantha got her Samantha historical doll for Christmas- and I’ve (im)patiently waited to have daughters to enjoy the brand with ever since (more on that in the next few weeks).  I am unsure if the timing of the new dolls is intentionally coinciding with The Help movie coming out but I think its pretty cool they are happening at the same time!

Despite different backgrounds and life stories, Cécile (a bold, confident girl from a well-to-do African American family), and shy, caring Marie-Grace (who has just moved back to New Orleans with her father), form a unique bond through their shared love of music. Later, their growing friendship deepens as they work together to help their community during the yellow fever epidemic that sweeps through New Orleans in 1853. Each character is brought to life through a beautifully designed 18-inch doll, plus an array of historically accurate and culturally authentic clothes and accessories that reflect the girls’ heritage and time period. Usborne Books through Kelly (Giveaway AND Huge Discount for New Consultants!)

I LOVE children’s books.  Well, really, I love all books, but children’s literature has always been something I’ve held close to my heart.  One of my favorite places to find books is Usborne Books, and one of my favorite people to get them from is Usborne Books through Kelly!  Usborne Books carries lots and lost of different books- books for babies, touch and feel books, noisy books, chapter books, lift the flap books, reference books, and so many more!!

We actually love Usborne Books so much that a few years ago, we did a catalog ‘party’ for them- and in lieu of getting free books for our home, we opted to use our freebies to donate a bunch of new books to our library here in town- this way, we can enjoy them, but so can many others, and with budget cuts being what they are, the library needed some fun new books.  It was fun to have Busy help me choose books for the library, and I was surprised how many people wanted to just give cash so we could purchase more books FOR the library!!

Some of our family favorites from Usborne are: [click to continue…]
