Dog and cat weight loss #PerfectWeight

We feed them, we nurture them, and we dedicate a large part of our lives ensuring that they are healthy and developing as they should be. Even when they’re naughty and break things around the house, we still love them unconditionally. And when they hurt, we hurt. We do everything that we can to avoid pain for them, because we love them. If you’ve guessed by now that I’m speaking about your children, you’re on the right path! Today, we’re talking about your 4-legged family members. Your cats and dogs.

 dog-weight-loss-#PerfectWeight

These are our babies, which never grow up. They are a part of our family, but unable to speak and verbalize their needs, or when they are in pain. That is why it is SO important that we do our best to keep them as healthy as possible, so that they may lead long and healthy lives! Did you know that over 50% of pets in the U.S. are overweight?  This is disturbing due to the fact that 5 extra pounds on a dog is equivalent to an extra 30 pounds on a human! As you can imagine, this extra weight can lead to serious health issues just like it can with adults. Dog and cat weight loss is possible!

Homemade Eczema Cream Recipe

Two of my kids have eczema. I have it myself on and off.  It’s itchy and uncomfortable.  We have tried a lot of products to help get some relief, but none seem to have a magical solution.  I decided to try to make my homemade eczema cream recently, and have been quite pleased with the results.  It works quite well, and especially for my son, he likes that there’s not a girlie scent to the cream I made.

Homemade Eczema Cream

homemade-eczema-cream-recipe

First, you’ll want to gather your ingredients.

Coconut oil (Organic is preferred)

Tea Tree essential oil

Lavender essential oil

Mixer

Container for your cream.  We had some Altoid tins that were almost empty so I just used one of those.  You can also purchase containers, but chances are that you have one in the house already that will do the job!)

Directions:

Put 1/4 cup coconut oil into mixer  with whisk

Add 3-4 drops Lavender essential oil

Add 5-6 drops Tea Tree essential oil

Beat ingredients together until well blended (about 75-90 seconds) on low-medium speed

Spoon cream into container

Use as needed!

I help my four year old to apply this eczema remedy most of the time, but my 6 year old can usually apply it himself. I help with areas he can’t reach. I like knowing exactly what we’re putting onto their skin!

5 Great Plants for Fairy Gardens

5 Great Plants for Fairy Gardens

5 Great Plants for Fairy Gardens

Planning a Fairy Garden can be a lot of fun! There are so many great accessories from cute little cottages and houses to working ponds and teeny tiny veggie gardens. You can even have wire or wooden furniture for your fairies to relax in after a tough day of bossing those gnomes around! With any good Fairy Garden, you need to have plants that work best in these miniature gardens. Here are five great plants for fairy gardens.

  1. Irish Moss is a great cover for hills or little mountains you want to build. It has soft white blooms and spreads quickly. It doesn’t bloom well in extreme heat but the green moss still is quite beautiful.

  1. Lemon Thyme is a pretty trailing plant that has little pink or white blooms. The scent when the fairies brush against it is quite lovely. The fairies also love to put a little into their cooking every now and then too!

  1. Miniature Roses are a beautiful compact blooming plant that comes in a myriad of colors. These roses don’t need a lot of room to grow but do love full sun and a good compost thrown on top of them every month or so.

  1. Onion Chives are nice to plant if you want a spiky mound with colorful pink blooms. They can be harvested by the fairies

  1. Strawberries bring all the fairies to the yard. Not only do they bloom all summer long with beautiful white flowers, but your fairies will love snacking on them on a hot summer day!

When choosing plants for your fairy garden pick ones that are easy for your fairies to take care of. Small, compact plants do best and there are so many to choose from that fit quite well in your miniature fairy garden!

Mason Jar Recipes: Pear Crisp

I used to think of crisps as being a great treat in the fall.  Then I realized that really, these delightful treats should be enjoyed ALL YEAR LONG.  Seasonal fruits in a crisp are like a dream come true, so let’s celebrate!!

Pear Crisp Mini Jars

pear-crisp-recipe

6 medium size Bartlett Pears, peeled and diced

sugar (optional)

10 jelly jars (4 oz.)

Crumble Topping Ingredients -

½ c. rolled oats

½ C. flour

1/3 C. packed brown sugar

4 tbs. butter or margarine, softened

Directions -

#1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

#2. Place about 2 tbs. of diced apples into the bottom of each jelly jar. You want to feel about ½ the jar. **If you prefer your pears a bit sweeter you can also add a ½ tsp. of sugar (sprinkled on top of the pears) to each jar.

#4. In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar. Using a fork, or a pastry cutter, cut in your 4 tbs. of butter or margarine. The mixture will be very crumbly.

#5. Scoop about 2-3 tbs. of crumble into your jelly jars. You want the crumble mixture to come right to the top of the jar – it will sink a bit while baking.

#6. Bake for 25 minutes on 350 degrees.

Family vacations in Maine

Maine Travel- Discover the Serenity of Family Vacations in Maine

The state of Maine offers lots of fun things to see and do for those looking for a down east family vacation. Summer vacation in this state means lots of fresh lobster, rowboat rides, wild blueberries, and pristine sandy beaches.

tide-pool-maine

The southernmost part of Maine is extremely popular for family fun and relaxation.  It lies between New Hampshire and Kennebunkport, and has a luscious and lively beachside boardwalk with an abundance of sandy beaches.  This is one of the places that those living in Maine love to visit during the summer.

A common scenario found in this neck of the woods is a mix old and new. Small children really enjoy touring the Civil War forts and learning about the past. Other places that children like to visit in Maine, is the wild bird sanctuaries. Here you will find native species of birds as well as plant life.

birding-maine

You and your family can feast on seafood snacks and various sides from the seaside snack bars.  As you chow down on some homemade Maine chowder, you can stroll around gazing at the homemade goods or the fresh fruit and vegetables being offered by local farmers at roadside stands.

While in the southern coast of Maine you can also step back in time and visit the local arcades which will bring back some fond memories of games that you perhaps once played. If you happen to be vacationing with your kids, you can bet that they will also be thrilled and amused by the honky-tonk style of the arcade games. Plan to spend a couple of hours playing the games.

You will encounter many locals who enjoy wading through the tidal waters or lining up for a lobster roll as they walk hand in hand with their children with buckets and shovels swinging to and fro.

Other Maine attractions that both adults and children can enjoy include Acadia National Park, National Scenic Byways, Maine Art Museum Trail, Maritime Museums, windjammers and lighthouses. As for accommodations, there are many bed & breakfasts, hotels, motels, and inns. Call your travel agent or the accommodation resource yourself for updated pricing and availability.

Maine in known as the pine tree state and is the largest of all of the New England states. The scenic beauty of this state never ceases to amaze both locals and travelers. A spectacular display of endless white pine trees, rocky coastline, rugged mountains, wilderness, and white sandy beaches await you.

Have you been to Maine? What was your favorite part?

Turning 40, a new doctor and a “fun” surprise

This post brought to you by Poise at Walmart. All opinions are 100% mine.

I turned 40 last week.  I did.  I’m not 29 again, not 39 again, I’m 40.  FORTY.  I’m ok with the number.  It’s the other stuff that comes WITH the turning forty thing that I’m kind of struggling with.  Like Tuesday, for instance. I had my first appointment with a new physician.

turning-40

Nice to meet you, Brett!!  Time to schedule a mammogram!

Um, ok?

You’re also due for a pap smear.

We only just met, see.  I think that’s more of a second date thing, Dr. Martin (yes, I found a Dr. Martin).

(laughter)

Now, aside from the understanding and belief that medical tests and being proactive in caring for my now-middle-aged-body, which I am ok with, I do like my new doctor.  Plus she totally understood when we were laughing at some dumb joke I cracked and had THE LOOK.

You know.  The look when you have a little surprise in your panties because you grew babies in your belly and they bounced on your bladder and moved it around on you for however long they gestated inside of you and now sometimes when you laugh or sneeze your bladder gives way?

That look.

Thankfully, Dr. Martin didn’t give me pity.  She laughed right with me.

Then she suggested I get myself some Poise at Walmart so that I can have some discreet protection for those moments.  She said it was because I’m SO funny and obviously I laugh a lot but maybe she was just being nice.

The new Poise are not your granny’s leakage protection, my friends. But I’m going to save my thoughts on these for a while until I get a chance to *ahem* test them out.

And, I’m going to wager a bet that some of you who are reading this are quietly nodding and whispiering to yourselves “I pee a little when I laugh, too.”

1 in 3 of us (women) have light bladder leakage. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.  It’s just something we have to take care of because if you sprinkle before you tinkle, that may not end up smelling so fabulous and no one wants that!

See, Poise has a new friend that those of us who have those little surprises will becoming familiar with.  The friend? SAM. SAM (super absorbant material) is part of the new Poise Microliner product to help those of us with light bladder leakage. The microliners are the thinnest on the market.  Whee!! Discretion! The entire Poise line is available at Walmart at an everyday low price.

‘Fess up, ladies.  Do you sprinkle before you tinkle?

Trista Sutter on family, gratitude and the great outdoors #TheOutdoorsMissesYou #Giveaway

Earlier this week I had the chance to sit down (via Skype) and chat with Trista Sutter.  Yes, “that” Trista Sutter.  Which is kind of ironic, because I’m fairly certain I’ve never watched The Bachelor nor The Bachelorette. (I have no reason why, although if they are all like Trista, I would love to watch….) So for me, this was a way to connect with another mom, albeit a mom who has a lot more fame in her life than I ever will.  It was a lovely conversation (though brief) but there were a few things that she said that were so meaningful to me, that really have just given me a refreshed view this week. I needed it.  It was nice to hear so much “normal” from a celebrity- talking about her kids playing sports, planning camps, playing Minecraft, stuff that the “rest of us” chat about all the time.

 trista-sutter-headshot-#theoutdoorsmissesyou

I had the chance to ask Trista a few questions- I was curious to hear what activities the family likes to enjoy most outdoors together.  Biking, hiking, walks, playing… the Sutters just really seem to enjoy being outside all of the time. They even go camping- and yes, I asked. They do tent camping.  (Clearly she’s braver than I am, I’m an RV camping girl I think…but I can hang in a tent. I’d just prefer not to….) It was really clear that Trista really values family time, together time.  Being outdoors with the family is important and part of their family on a regular basis. :)

Given that Trista’s partnered with OFF! brand to help get everyone OUTDOORS and enjoying all that mother nature offers, together, with our families, we had to find out some information about what her favorite OFF! products are. The Botanical Wipes came up several times, as did clip on repellents.  I haven’t tried the wipes but we plan to get some this week- my kids are really fair skinned and that pale skin is very sensitive to insect bites.  We’re looking forward to trying some wipes to keep the bugs OFF! the kids!

trista-sutter-happily-ever-after-bachelorette

I want to read Trista’s book: Happily Ever After: The Life-Changing Power of a Grateful Heart.  Why?

“The most important time to find gratitude is in those most difficult times because that’s how you get through them. Realize they are a blessing, even when it’s hard.” (Thank you for remembering that quote, Janel!)

Because showing gratitude every single day is immensely important.  It’s SO easy to get caught up in stuff- the big, the small, the daunting, the simple, and lose that gratitude.  But it matters. It’s important.  Trista shared with us that she committed to sharing gratitude on social media daily.  Every day. Part of being happy is choosing gratitude.  I’m pretty sure that I’ve heard that message many times in church sermons through the years.  I just have found times in my life where I almost forget to choose gratitude.  I’m recommitted to choosing happy…choosing gratitude…choosing positive.

mother-day-hammonasset

One of the best ways I have found that helps me to choose positive, choose gratitude, IS to get outdoors and BE with my family.  I actually wrote a whole post about the last minute decision on Mother’s Day to head to the beach knowing it’d not be warm enough to swim but feeling that strong urge to just get AWAY from the every day and connect with the family outside, exploring, appreciating, finding gratitude.  Choosing in those moments, planned or unplanned- those are the moments that turn into reasons for gratitude. We had one of the best days we’ve had all year and my cup was just overflowing.

As a mom, hearing Trista share how she says Magic Words to her children every night and has them repeat them really touched my heart. The biggest?

You are important” (yes, from The Help). What a gift to give your kids to remind them every single night they are important to you. I’ve decided we need to start using Magic Words in our family too.

Mother’s Day at Hammonasset Beach State Park #SiennaDiaries

After a delicious breakfast made by my family on Mother’s Day, I realized we had no plans for the day, and decided since it was due to be absolutely gorgeous out, we needed to head down to the Connecticut shore and spend a day unplugged together.  AWESOME choice, I have to tell you.

hammonasset-beach-madison-ct

If only I’d remembered to pack myself a sweatshirt.. but oh well. Thankfully, we have the use of a 2014 Toyota Sienna for a few months as part of the Sienna Diaries program and were able to ride in comfort AND luxury down to the shore.  It was nice to have so much space to throw in all of our gear we might need (and some we’d probably never need…I’m good at overpacking).

toyota-sienna-day-at-beach

Yes, this is almost all stuff packed for one “quick trip” for our family to the beach.  Can you imagine what we’d pack if it was to be hot and we needed extra drinks? We didn’t have swim suits but I did have a bag with a change of clothes for all of us. I knew at least one kid was going to go into the water no matter how cold it was (I was right).

The kids were super excited to go to the ocean.  We’ve actually not really been very much (twice for the littler two).

road-trip-to-beach-#siennadiaries

There are no members of my family who will just take a normal picture.  My oldest thinks we’re all crazy so she tends to hide for car pics lately (see her hand?)

Once we got to the beach I was so happy we decided to do this day trip. We went to Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, CT.  Tons of beach space, and lots of different areas to explore.  We headed way down by Miegs Point so we could do some exploring on the point to start our day around the Salt Marsh.

exploring-hammonasset-beach-state-park-ct

As you can see, I didn’t plan their footwear (or my own) well at all for anything but sandy beaches. Live and learn.  We had a blast. We’ve never gone to the ocean much, and never on a day that was chilly like this, so it was a lot of fun to explore and see a lot more of what Hammonasset had to offer besides sandy beach and cool ocean water :)

climbing-rocks-hammonasset

There were treasures to be found, tons of snails, scallops, and other fun creatures around.  We found all kinds of cool rocks and shells to check out. I was pretty amazed there was not a boo-boo for anyone since we were (almost) all in flip flops.

shells-hammonasset-beach-ct

My oldest was always far ahead and loved climbing the rocks.  I kind of think she may be part monkey at this point. She’s quite obsessed with climbing trees but none near the beach seemed to be tall enough for her climbing preferences.

climbing-rocks-hammonasset-beach-ct

Everyone liked this area with the logs.  Fun for photos. (I wish I’d brought my camera not just my phone!)

exploring-hammonasset-beach-#SiennaDiaries

Once we were all kind of ready to be done climbing on rocks, we thought we’d head back to the Sienna, grab a snack, and then off to spend some time with our toes in the sand.

I did grab this shot of all 3 kids and I think it was the best Mother’s Day gift I could get- a shot with all three kids and it so totally “grabs” their personalities. My oldest is being a mother hen, my youngest is a total goofball (like her mama) and my son is acting all “cool.”  I love this photo for tons of reasons!

mother-day-hammonasset

This is the entirety of my time in the water.  It was about 78 inland on Mother’s Day, and probably 68 at the shore. Too cold even for me.

toes-in-water

Not, however, too cold for the kids.  Or at least, for my oldest.  I wish I’d grabbed a picture of her “falling” into the water.  She thought it was great.  Until the wind picked up an hour later and she got cold anyway!

running-water-hammonasset

The little kids were quite happy to settle in and play in the sand away from the water and I was happy to just sit back and enjoy the day.  It was awesome.

sand-play-hammmonasset

I have to say, I think this was one of the best beach days my family has had.  NOT having hot temps meant we were all more comfortable and able to enjoy ourselves longer.  We had so much fun at Hammonasset and are actually talking about possibly renting one of the campsites later in the summer and camping out in the tent!  There’s so much more we need to explore and do at this beautiful State Park!! When we do, we’ll be glad to have the Sienna- so much room for all of the gear that we can’t seem to pare down!

hammonasset-beach-state-park

Thank you to Toyota for inviting us to take part in this semester of the Sienna Diaries program.  We’ll be sharing more of our adventures with the Sienna over the next few months!

Where have your adventures taken you lately?

Fairy Gardens are an easy way to bring whimsy and fun into your garden this year. With these gardens you can grow gardens on a miniature scale or just add fairy accents throughout your full-sized gardens. A fairy garden is perfect if you are gardening in a small space or want a little something fun to accent your container garden.

When it comes to accessories, there are thousands of different items you can find for your fairy garden. There are accessories that range from adorable housesand huts to a miniature vegetable garden complete with teeny tiny trowels and pots. These are way too cute!

A good walking path ending in a place to picnic is a great addition to a fairy garden. There are even little tea sets or picnic baskets complete with miniature wine bottles for your fairy garden. Another great accessory are all the water features that are available. There are workable water fountains that can attract butterflies and birds to your fairy garden. You can also build in a water feature like a pond or a watermill and bring your fairy garden to life. If you don’t want to build the pond, here is one you can purchase that is ready to install!

fairy gardens accessories

The key to a beautiful fairy garden is to keep the accessories surrounding a theme. There are so many choices to choose from that it is easy to buy everything and see how it all works together. If you can, decide what you want your fairies to experience first – whether it is their own garden or if they are going to have a quiet place to relax on a patch of moss grass. Once you decide your theme, even if the specific color palette you are trying to achieve, you can help save your pocketbook from going crazy with buying fairy garden accessories. Believe me, it is so easy to do.

Just look at how cute these accessories would be in a butterfly fairy garden!
