Fairhaven Health Review and Giveaway Ends 5/19/11

I just love finding all natural pregnancy products. Sometimes it feels like a pregnant woman is so restricted in her options. No deli meat, no caffeine, stay away from cleaning supplies, etc…. I have found that there really aren’t that many products out there for woman who are looking for an all natural alternative, particularly ones that are geared specifically for the pregnant woman.

That’s why I was so excited when I learned about the Fairhaven Health website. Not only do they sell pregnancy products, but also nursing and fertility aids. I had the opportunity to try out the Pregnancy Deodorant and the Tea-For-Two.
The Pregnancy Deodorant was a product that I had never seen before. To tell the truth, until now, I have never even thought about the harsh chemical and additives that are included in products such as deodorant and makeup. This deodorant does not contain any of the harsh chemicals that other do, such as aluminum and parabens. The deodorant is a roll on, with a very light scent. I have to admit that I was skeptical at first. After all, I am a Secret Clinical Strength type of girl, but this deodorant actually worked! I had no problems with perspiration and the product worked throughout the day. It was great, and I will definitely be sticking with it during my pregnancy and after!

Rachael Ray Nutrish

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Nutrish for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine. about us

We received a sample of Rachael Ray Nutrish just 6 dry dog food for Tobey to try recently, and wow.  He loved it!     Perhaps he was just bored with his other food, but one sniff and he was sold- he ate the entire bowl really fast!

I like simplicity for me, and for my family.  When I say my family I include furry family members as well.  I like knowing that Nutrish is made with so few ingredients, it makes me feel good about feeding this to my dog!  (My kids, quite honestly, just love the fact that Rachael Ray is on the bag.

What are the 6 ingredients in the Nutrish?  Lamb meal is the main ingredient, with brown rice, ground rice, dried beet pulp, poultry fat, and natural chicken flavor.  It’s wheat and soy free, for those of our furry friends who have sensitivities to those ingredients!  Plus there are no fillers, no preservatives and no artificial flavors. This isn’t even what makes me like the product so much (or the concept. I haven’t actually sampled it myself!) but some of the profits from this product benefit Rachael’s Rescue!

Olive Oil Desserts Cookbook – What a Mom Wants

Micki Sannar created a very healthy dessert cookbook that features an ingredient I’d previously never thought of when baking desserts- olive oil!  Olive Oil Desserts features dozens of delectable recipes that replace trans fats with olive oil without sacrificing taste (which, let’s be real here, is what matters for dessert!!). Cakes, Cookies & Bars, Muffins & Sweet Breads, and Pies & Crisps are the different ‘chapters’ in this cookbook, with dozens of mouth watering images to tempt you even further beyond the recipes themselves.

Olive Oil Dessert FACTS

• NO Trans Fats
• NO Hydrogenated Oils
• 30% Fewer Calories
• Monounsaturated Fat
• Made with Pure Olive Oil
• Heart Healthy
• Whole Grain Option
• Amazing Taste & Texture
• Makes You Smile!

I’ve used applesauce to replace oil for years in many of my baking recipes, but it honestly never occurred to me to think of olive oil as a substitute.  I think I started using the applesauce to reduce the fat content of the baking, and have always associated olive oil with cooking.  But why not use olive oil?  It is well known for its heart-healthy properties, so if you are going to use a fat, why not a healthy fat?

I wasn’t sure where this baking venture would take me (really, no one is ever sure where my baking ventures will take me…I’m inconsistent with baking and cooking…) but was game to give this a try.  I decided to start with the “New Toll Cookies” which are a replacement for the ever-loved Toll House Cookies.  The reason I chose this recipe is that I find it almost a challenge to screw chocolate chip cookies up (but I have) and since its something I’m comfortable baking anyway, probably a good place to start. I’ve made these twice now- the first time without the Butter Extract that Micki recommends- and the second with it- definitely adds the buttery taste but the cookies themselves are delicious with or without it (given the choice, I choose with).

A New Toll Cookie
2/3 cup……………….. pure olive oil
3/4 cup………………. granulated sugar
3/4 cup………………. brown sugar, packed
2 large……………… eggs
2 teaspoons……….     pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon………… butter extract
1 tablespoon……..    milk
2 1/2 cups……………. flour
1 teaspoon………… baking soda
1 teaspoon………… salt
1 cup………………… semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup………………… chopped pecans (optional)
1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly coat large
cookie sheets with olive oil cooking spray.

2. In a mixer bowl add olive oil, sugar, and
brown sugar. Blend until smooth and creamy.

Beat in eggs, vanilla & butter extracts, and milk.
3. Add flour, baking soda, and salt. Blend well.

4. Fold in chocolate chips and pecans. Drop
by tablespoonfuls or medium size cookie scoop
onto prepared cookie sheets.

5. Bake 9~11 minutes. Cool on wire racks.

Want to try baking vegan?  Micki has some recommendations for vegan substitutions in this book.  A very nice touch!

I’m anxious to try the Blueberry Streusel and Lemony Squares with Blueberries this summer when our blueberry bushes start producing our berries- perhaps it will be a new family tradition- picking the berries, washing them, and then baking with some of them!

Beaute de Maman Review

Many expecting moms suffer from skin changes during pregnancy. I never experienced many problems with my previous pregnancies, but this time around I have acne and psoriasis. I found that my normal skin care products just weren’t working anymore. When I found Beaute de Maman, which is a line of health and beauty products developed by an OBGYN, I was intrigued.

I had the opportunity to try out the Facial Scrub, Face and Body Cream, Nipple Gel and the Herbal Supplement for morning sickness. The Facial scrub has a nice, neutral scent and exfoliating beads that leave your skin feeling soft. I found that it does a great job of cleaning my face and removing makeup without over drying my skin. The Face and Body Cream is a nice, thick cream with a tea tree oil scent. I love that I can apply this cream to both my face and other dry areas of my body. The cream absorbed nicely into my skin and didn’t leave a greasy or oily feeling on my face.

While I really enjoyed the two facial products, I didn’t realize the full benefit for a few more days. My complexion actually started to clear up! I have been using the facial scrub and the cream for one week now and my acne is completely gone!

The nipple gel is a nice thick gel that absorbed nicely when tested on my hand, while leaving a protective barrier. This seems like a great product for nursing mothers. Particularly first time nursing mothers, when cracking and dryness are a common problem. I will definitely be keeping this product around to test later in the summer.

The Herbal Supplement for morning sickness was unfortunately sent to me after I had passed that part of my pregnancy. However, my sister happened to be deep in the throws of all day nausea when I received this product. She had even resorted to taking prescribed medication from her OB just to get through the work day. I sent these pills to her and she loved them! They relieved her nausea enough to help her function throughout the day and allow her to get off her prescribed medication.

I highly recommend checking out Beaute de Maman if you are looking for health and beauty products during pregnancy. In addition, they are offering FREE SHIPPING with an order of two or more products.  Follow them on Facebook for the latest updates and promotions.

I received a sample of this product to facilitate my review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Safe and effective ways to clean your home on a budget

I discovered a few years ago that I can clean my house – almost top to bottom – with 2 very simple and very inexpensive ingredients. They are not hard to find and you can buy them in large or small quantities.  They are also non toxic and child and pet safe so there’s no need to worry about ventilating for fumes, or rinsing once you are done cleaning.

The two ingredients that you want to get to know the benefits of? Baking soda & vinegar. There are other things you can add in, like essential oils, to enhance the cleaning or disinfecting power, or make the cleaners smell good, but you don’t really need them.  When I mention vinegar in recipes below, I am referring to distilled white vinegar (think of what you dye Easter eggs with!)

What can baking soda do? This is almost more a question of what can’t baking soda do! Sign up for Arm & Hammer coupons to make your cleaning supplies even more affordable!!  I buy 2 large bags of it 1-2 times per year at BJ’s using a coupon and literally pay just a few dollars to clean almost my entire house.  I think a 5 lb bag was $5.99 last time we bought this, less the coupon !!

What does vinegar do? It kills mold, bacteria and germs, because of its acidic properties.  Its safe for kids and pets! (Get money saving coupons for Heinz vinegar on their site!)  Buying vinegar in gallon sized containers (or larger from a warehouse club for about $6) is only a few dollars and will make most of your cleaning recipes dozens of times over!

Soft Scrub: Make a paste with baking soda & water. Put a bit of baking soda into your hand or a dish, add water to make a paste, and voila. Works the same as softscrub, it isn’t abrasive, and will clean just the same.

Coffee maker: Run 1cup of vinegar through your coffee maker to clean the machine. Run plain water through (a full pot worth) twice to rinse afterwards. Use what goes into the pot while hot to kill weeds in your driveway or front walk

Carpet freshener: sprinkle baking soda on your rug or carpet and let sit for 20-30 minutes. Vaccuum.

Toilet Bowl: Pour 3 cups vinegar into toilet. Let sit at least 30 minutes (I usually do this right before I head to bed so it can sit overnight) — this doesn’t replace scrubbing the toilet but it keeps it disinfected!

Wallpaper Removal : Mix equal parts vinegar with hot water. Use as you would any remover.

Clean your microwave (this is one of my favorites!!) Mix 1 cup vinegar with 1 cup water.  Put in microwave safe bowl and cook in microwave for 5 minutes.  Let this sit after the time ends for 5-10 minutes, open the door and wipe clean.
You can also clean your microwave with 1/2 c baking soda and 2 c water, again in a microwave safe bowl- repeat as with vinegar. So easy, no scrubbing, and totally food safe- no risk of chemicals in your food!

Fabric Softener: 1/2 c distilled white vinegar in the wash eliminates lint and static without chemicals.  Also refreshes fabrics like towels that may have a musty smell.

Floors: 1/2 cup vinegar to 1 gallon water to clean hardwood floors (works beautifully and the kids can help!)

I love fresh scents in my house- so I usually add some drops of essential oils (including strawberry or green apple which technically aren’t true essential oils but I love the smell so I add drops of them to cleaners quite often.  I just ordered some of each of these 2 scents from an Etsy seller this morning- about $4.99 for a 5ml bottle of each scent.  You can find essential oils in a range of prices at health food stores and online- many have naturally disinfecting properties (like Tea Tree Oil which is included in almost every single cleaning recipe I make but not necessary)

Other great items to keep in the house for cleaning: Castille soap and Borax (The 20 mule team borax, like mom used to buy…)

I’m not going to share all of my cleaning recipes- they are quite easy to find with a quick search online, and there are countless books you can find on homemade cleaners.  I just wanted to share some of my favorites and illustrate just a little bit how inexpensive and effective homemade cleaners can be!!

Busy’s thoughts:  My girl is a little younger than the age on the box but she had a BLAST with this.  She literally saw the box, opened it, and made snaps using every fabric sample that was included in it right away.  She was really proud of herself for being able to work the snap press, and figured it out with just a few reminders from me.  The little kids were napping and I was making dinner so she was in heaven sitting at the table making jewelry creations!

She likes that you can make a necklace and rings, and a bracelet too.  Her favorite is the necklace.  She also likes the big sheet of paper (the decals) that you can make the snaps extra custom with!  Once I showed her that we can use ribbon we have at home to make even more bracelet straps, she was all excited planning a multitude of bracelets for all of her outfits.
