Sponsored Video: The Hair Clog Eliminator

I’ve never had a lot of hair come off my head.  Or rather, I never did , until about 4 months post-partum with kid #1.

That’s when things got ugly.

I had no idea I was shedding hair like crazy. I mean, I’ve never had particularly long hair so it just wasn’t on my radar? But my husband noticed, and was getting really annoyed with me.  At one point, in our sleep-deprived zombie state, he asked me if I was clogging the drain with my hair on purpose.

After a full five minutes of the stink eye and sharing some feelings about what he’d said, I told him I had no idea what he was talking about. So he explained.  We both were baffled.

So, naturally, I did what anyone would do. I asked my friends on a message board.

And found out the saddest of the sad news, that hair loss post partum is normal and can last for up to a year.

They weren’t kidding.  Holy MOLY. With my oldest, I lost hair in what seemed like huge fistfuls daily through her first year (It wasn’t, because I’m dramatic and exaggerate but it really SEEMED like oodles, swear).

And it lasted longer for my second post partum year…and still longer for my third post partum year.

I’m not really sure how I have any hair LEFT on my head at this point.

And yea, I know, GROSS! Iew! IwWW!! I totally agree.

But when we shower, hairs fall off our heads.  I think it’s inevitable.  I guess longer hairs just don’t go down the drain as quickly so they are seen more? Not sure. (Please note, I’ve been waffling about adding photos of hair clogs and just couldn’t do it, not to myself or to you. You are welcome).

Hairs in drains=not a good thing.  Hairs in drains=clogs in drains.

Clogged drains=plumbing issues.

That’s where you need some help…..and now Liquid-Plumr has a formula JUST for getting rid of hair clogs in your drains. I’m sure others see a need for this, but I do have to wonder if my husband may have called them. In my defense, I do clean my hairs out of the tub after my showers (and baths) but some of it doesn’t get caught, and plus we have kids with hair now, so there’s 5 of us shedding hairs daily.

This whole conversation is so gross. I totally know it is. But the majority of humans who have taken a shower have shed some hairs at some point and the reality is that sometimes human stuff is gross. But there’s help.  For all of us. Hair clogs be damned, your reign of terror is over!! *ShakingFists*

Maple Glazed Ham Recipe with Pomegranate Pineapple Reduction

I have two very special things to share in this post today.  First comes a delicious recipe JUST in time for Easter and Spring and any time you want a good glazed ham recipe. Then, after the recipe, you can meet my new friends from Ziplist and find out all about their awesomeness.  (That’s totally a word, I’m sure of it).

Maple Glazed Ham Recipe with Pomegranate and Pineapple reduction

maple-glazed-ham

Ingredients:

Spiral cut ham, ours was a little over 8 pounds
1 small pomegranate
1.5 cups of fresh pineapple
1 cup pure maple syrup
a few sprigs of fresh herbs, we used thyme

Directions:

Remove the pith from the pomegranate, being sure all of the white fleshy pieces are out.

Cut your fresh cut pineapple into 1-2 inch chunks.

pomegranate pineapple ham ingredients

Reserve about a 1/2 cup total of the fruit mixture.

Add fruit and washed fresh herbs to your blender (we used a stick blender and the tall cup that came with it).

pomegranate pineapple blending

Puree until smooth then place in and let reduce for 10-15 minutes.

pomegranate pineapple strain

This is a great time to preheat your oven to 325 degrees and place your ham in the roasting pan.

Smother your ham with the pure maple syrup, pouring slowly, then add the fruit reduction and top with remaining 1/2 cup of whole fruit.

pomegranate pineapple on ham

Cover loosely with tinfoil and cook about 12 minutes per pound.

The beauty of most store bought hams is that they are precooked, so we’re really just reheating and glazing.

pomegranate pineapple ham plated

With about a half hour left to cook, remove tinfoil.  Enjoy!

Get sharpie off a stuffed animal #BizChallenge #ad

This post about how to get sharpie off a stuffed animal is brought to you by Biz Stain & Odor Eliminator. All opinions are 100% mine.

So my four year old, she really likes to color. It’s rare to see her without a crayon, pencil or marker in her hand.  We’ve always been really diligent about keeping all of the permanent sort of art supplies locked up out of reach, but somehow, she got her little hands on a purple sharpie.

And promptly colored on several of her posessions.  One was a finger mold made at a Brownie field trip to a local orthodontist office. Some sharpie went on the kitchen table, some went on her play kitchen, and some was put onto her beloved Fluffy, a stuffed puppy her Uncie Bill gave her for Christmas 2 years ago.

Kids amaze me.  When she saw that there was sharpie on Fluffy, she was beside herself. Remember, she put the sharpie on the dog.  Sigh. Patience.

Now, the other stuff came off with some mommy magic cleaning skills. My two favorite pre-wash stain methods did nothing to this sharpie.

But the puppy? I needed some help. I wanted to weep. Poor Fluffy.  Then I remembered that I’d gotten a bottle of Biz Stain Fighter in the mail and figured I needed to test it out on regular laundry, and I had to wash our napkins…so I figured Fluffy could give the Biz a go as well.  Yes, Biz.  The stuff my grama used to keep in her laundry room.

So, I put some of the Biz Stain Fighter right on Fluffy’s tush. And I waited. Biz contains more stain fighting ingredients so I knew I’d have some success, just not HOW much success.

Into the wash Fluffy went.

39 minutes later, Fluffy came out.  He was about 85% free of his sharpie marks.

A little more Biz, a little more wait…

and guess what?

Fluffy’s good as new!! He looks fab, doesn’t he? At least until my sharpie wielder strikes again.

Now, soccer and baseball start in a few weeks.  Hopefully Biz can keep up with the stinky sweaty uniforms that will be coming home x3 kids!

5 things to clean monthly

Being proactive with your cleaning will help keep your home a healthier one, and likely save you money in the long run because your appliances don’t have to work as hard to be efficient. It also means your home will smell fresher and not get stinky. It’s finally spring and a good time to start spring cleaning- but let’s not forget these 5 things to clean monthly.  I’ve also included tips to clean these items without harsh chemicals for a healthier clean!

5 things to clean monthly

1. Washing Machine– There are products available for purchase to clean your washing machine.  Buy them.  Or, better yet, run a cycle with vinegar and call it a day.  You want to run it on a hot cycle with an extra rinse.  Be sure to clean the detergent, softener and bleach compartments when you clean the washer.  For front loaders, be sure to wipe down the rubber gasket.  This is a big part of why people’s washers start giving them stinky clothes.  Stay on top of things save yourself time and money.

We learned the hard way that you have to clean the front loading washing machines on a regular basis.  Somehow, when we first purchased ours, we missed that detail.  Oops.  Lesson learned, after all laundry and our basement smelled gross and we couldn’t figure out why!!  Vinegar.

2. Dishwasher– Again, you can buy cleaner for this, or you can simply run vinegar through a cycle.  Also be sure to clean the drain trap each month.  Build up in there can cause backup and trouble starts with that.  You want your dishwasher running efficiently so be sure to empty the trap and clean your dishwasher!!  This keeps your dishwasher from being stinky, too!
3. Dryer Vent — The foil-ish thing that the air and moisture travel with the lint through?  That totally needs to be cleaned.  Regularly.  It’s a fire hazard.  I’m assuming you clean the lint trap before or after each load goes through the dryer.

4. Ceiling Fans- I actually try to do these when I change the sheets on Saturdays, but often just don’t….and it ends up being monthly.  Any longer than that and we get a build up that is just gross, and I fear we’ll end up turning them on before cleaning them and have all that dust and build up flying all over our bedrooms.  2/3 of our kids have allergies- this is NOT something I want flying around.

When I do my ceiling fans, I either use a pillow case so the dust and stuff fall into my case and not all over the room, or I use a damp microfiber cloth.  No chemicals needed, but still effective.

filtrete odor reducing filter

5. Filter(s) Filters for your furnace, filters for your air conditioning unit- whatever you have, change or clean them once a month.  Filters help to clean the air in your home and really, who wants to breathe in all the stuff filters work to keep OUT of our homes? (GROSS).

The Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter is 65 times more effective than other carbon filters at removing odors from the entire home, such as those from cooking, tobacco smoke, pets, mildew and cleaning chemicals.

soups for sunday dinner

I adore soup, but what do you say about soup? I was chatting with my friend, Laura, about our love of soup and she inspired me to write this silly little poem…

 Ode to Soup

Oh soup, how do I love thee?

Let me count the ways….

You fill my belly

You hydrate me

You fuel my energy

So I can write more silly poems.

You feed my family

And save me work

Without you, I’d be lost.

Oh, soup, how I love thee.

You are often hot

Sometimes cold

I don’t know many who eat you I lukewarm

I can put you in my crockpot

I can toss you in a pan

I can bring you to a friend

You are so versatile

I can eat you all year round

Oh, soup, how I love thee!

Kermit the Frog Whoopie Pie Recipe

I grew up loving The Muppets.  I think most kids from the 70s and 80s did.  That was Saturday night TV.  I’m beyond thrilled that they are back and taking charge of entertainment with their new Muppets Most Wanted film!!  It’s so fun to share my beloved childhood friends with my kiddos. We were invited to a pre-screening of the new film a few weeks ago and had a great time, laughing a lot!  There’s a lot of silly, tons of fun and a little bit of action thrown into this new film to make it fun for everyone in the family to watch.  All 3 of my kids share the same “favorite” part which I won’t give away… you’ll have to watch and guess what part it is….

Anyway, given my love for all things Muppets and loving Kermie like I do, I came up with these Kermit the Frog inspired Whoopie Pies and I hope you’ll like them!

Kermit Whoopie Pies

Kermit the Frog Whoopie Pie Recipe

Recipe Adapted From: Erin’s Food Files

Ingredients for Cake:

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 Tbsp green food coloring (I like gel food coloring)

Ingredients for Filling:

3 cups powdered sugar
½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1 tsp vanilla

Supplies for Frogs:

Large Candy Eyes
Red Candy Melts
Red Sugar Sprinkles

Directions:

First, you’ll need to make the cake pieces. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In large mixing bowl, beat the butter on medium to high 30 seconds. Mix in the brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk, beating after each addition just until combined. Stir in the green food coloring.

Spoon batter in 1-inch diameter oval rounds, about 1/2-inch high on prepared baking sheets, allowing 1 inch between each round.

Kermit Whoopie Pies-1

Bake 7 to 9 minutes, or until tops are set. Cool completely on baking sheets.

Turn the oven down to 200 degrees F. Line another baking sheet with parchment paper, and set the red candy melt pieces on the paper. You’ll need one piece for each whoopie pie.

Put the pan in the oven, and bake the candy melts for 1-3 minutes, until they just start to melt. They’ll be shiny but still keep their shape. Keep an eye on them so they don’t melt too much.

Kermit Whoopie Pies-4

Remove from the oven and pour red sugar sprinkles on top of them. Allow to harden completely.

While the cake pieces are cooling, go ahead and make the filling. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter until smooth with no visible lumps.

Add the cream cheese and beat until combined. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla and beat until smooth. Be careful that you don’t overbeat the filling, or it will lose structure.

Kermit Whoopie Pies-5

Pipe filling in onto the bottom of one whoopie pie. Add a sprinkle-covered candy melt for a tongue. Place another whoopie pie on top.

Kermit Whoopie Pies-7

Dip bottoms of candy eyes in the filling and place on top of the top whoopie pie for Kermit’s eyes.

Kermit Whoopie Pies-8

And…voila! Kermit the Frog Whoopie Pies! (You could TOTALLY Do Constantine and add a chocolate chip or even green frosting for some fun :)

Kermit Whoopie Pies-13

3 Reasons to Visit Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach has become a favorite vacation location for my family over the years. Having been a fan of the eastern coastline to begin with, it was only a matter of time before we found ourselves wanting to check out the world famous locale. This family friendly vacation area gives you all the avenues needed to have a great vacation at all times of the year. There are three events in particular that will bring our family back to Virginia Beach on a regular basis, however. They are each unique and spectacular in their own right, and we will continue to come back and enjoy them as long as they are offered.

virginia beach fireworks

The first one is the summer fireworks. Watching fireworks out on the ocean is a special sight indeed. From June to October, there are tons of awesome fireworks shows to take in. They take out a barge and shoot them off from the ocean, giving you the ultimate front row seat to a light show that will blow you away. If you love the beach and you love fireworks, this is the ultimate marriage.

Another important reason to come to Virginia Beach in my family (mostly husband) is striped bass season. This area is known for being the capital of the world when it comes to striped bass and you can’t find anyplace that offers better options. The fishing here goes well beyond the striped bass, however. Tuna, mahi-mahi, bluefin and even mackerel are all on the menu if you love to fish. There are countless other species just waiting for you to come and enjoy at Virginia Beach.

Finally there is the world famous Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Every single person on the planet should experience this place at least once as it represents history, beauty and excitement all in one locale. These wonderful walkways provide every form of entertainment you can imagine and some of the best food you will ever eat. Best of all, it straddles the beach itself providing a beautiful view of the ocean in all its majesty. If you want to truly have a reason to visit Virginia Beach, the Boardwalk is more than enough.

These three things are the primary draws for my family, but if you were to ask others you would get three totally different answers. That is the beauty of Virginia Beach…you have so much diversity that there is always something for everyone. There’s something to do for everyone at every age in every season. We’d love to head down to Virginia Beach for a family trip this summer- we want to explore some fun restaurants and just hang out with the kids.

Buffalo Chicken Flatbread Pizza Recipe

Dean’s Dip has a really fun, spicy and bold new flavor in it’s lineup… introducing Buffalo Ranch. They’ve paired the favorite flavor combo of creamy ranch with spicy buffalo wings into one delightful dip that you can enjoy with chips, veggies, pretzels…or, turn into a fabulous new recipe.  That’s what I did- I used Dean’s Buffalo Ranch dip to create a Weight Watchers friendly Buffalo Chicken Flatbread Pizza Recipe!

Buffalo Chicken Flatbread Pizza

Ingredients:

1 cooked chicken breast, cubed or shredded (I boiled mine)

1 cup steamed cauliflower, cut to yours size preference

1 Flatout Flatbread Light Original

3 TBSP Dean’s Buffalo Ranch Dip

2 TBSP Bleu Cheese

(You could also add any other veggies that sound good to you- this is just what I prefer for my lunches)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350

Spread the Buffalo Ranch dip all over the Flatbread (this is replacing the sauce)

Top the flatbread with your chicken, cauliflower and blue cheese crumbles

Bake for 6-8 minutes

Enjoy with a side of fruit and or veggies!

I love this pizza recipe because I get the fun spice and bold flavor of the buffalo wings without the bad-for-me breading and oil from frying.  It gives me veggie servings which we all know are super important for our health, too.

Plus, I still get to indulge in some delicious dip without the guilt- using a smaller amount means

Dean’s Dip is consistently cool and creamy every time and goes with just about everything. Potato chips and nachos are your standards, but don’t forget, Dean’s goes great with carrot sticks and brocoli florets. Dean’s Dip is located in the dairy dip section—never too far away.

Use Dean's Dip at parties, special occasions or just everyday snacking. Enjoy!
