Roger Nix President at Age Six – Support a hopeful children’s author!

First time children’s book author Nick Dazé, is in the final days (63 hours to be exact) of his campaign to raise funding to independently publish his children’s book Roger Nix President at Age Six.
The story is about kindergartener Roger Nix, an ordinary boy: Roger loves kindergarten, playing make-believe, and hanging out with his imaginary friends (a baby donkey named Jack and a baby elephant named Abe). But when he learns about the plans of Old Man Plee, a perennial presidential candidate, to shut down schools and send kids to work in factories as an austerity measure; Roger decides to run against Old Man Plee as a defender of “school and summer vacation, learning and imagination”. Of course Abe and Jack are there to help him every step of the way.
Nick Daze and his incredible Kickstarter campaign (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/787960356/roger-nix-president-at-six) have already raised nearly $22,000 and only has $8,000 more to go in order to put the book into production.  The book has been fully written by Daze and the illustrations beautifully crafted by Bill Robinson www.FlimFlammery.com . Each $30 pledge towards the Roger Nix campaign comes with a first edition hardcover copy of the book, delivered in time for the new school year this fall.  This is a timely story that is fascinating, engaging, and a thought-provoking read for both kids and parents written by a imaginative adult who was encouraged to explore his imagination as a child.

Here is an excerpt from the book:
Roger stood up quickly. He had something to say
With a wink from Jack and a trunks-up from Abe.
I’ll run against him,” Roger said with a shout.
I’ll run for president, have you no doubt!

To close school would be nothing short of a crime
You can’t fool all us kids, not all of the time.”

He stood on his desk and they all watched and wondered
As Roger kept talking, his voice boomed and thundered.
“We’ll beat him and keep all the schools as they are
Or make them way better. We’ll shoot for the stars!
We go to school so one day we’ll go far,
Not because it is easy–because it is hard!

We are KIDS! The whole point is to learn and have fun
And to use our wee noggins…

THIS RACE HAS BEGUN!”

So Abe, Jack, and Roger got to work right away.
“That kid’s on to something,” his parents would say.
He made lots of speeches; he shook lots of hands
He toured a big factory that made rubber bands.

Then one night on the tube, to Old Plee’s disdain,
The news ran a story on Roger’s campaign.
“Roger Nix, daydreamer and ultimate kid,
Is gaining on Plee in his presidential bid.”

But everyone knew that sooner or later
Roger would have to be quite the debater.
Because one night soon, under some bright marquee
A debate would take place between Roger and Plee.

Glasses, contacts, or surgery?

I have worn glasses most of my life.  I remember my first pair of glasses- they were, of course, “Annie” frames…big, buglike, and ohsounattractive.  I *had* to have the Annie frames…although I’m quite certain my mom must have argued with me to no avail.   The older I get, the worse my vision gets- and it is by no means “poor” vision, but there’s been a definite decline, especially in the past 10 years.

I’ve always chosen glasses since my first pair- some cute, some funky, some super spunky (ok maybe not super spunky for others, but for me, they are spunky), some boring…

…and one time, I chose contacts. I did so with apprehension but thinking I’d be better about actually wearing them than my glasses.

That didn’t go over so well.  I have this thing about my eyes.  I can’t stand touching them or putting things- even drops- into them.  I’m probably not the best person to be trying contacts, even if they are cheap contact lenses.

But now I’m due for an eye exam and checkup, and it’s time to decide…glasses, contacts, or surgery?  The laser surgery seems to huge and- well, SURGICAL…but it’s kind of a one and done thing…contacts would be great if I could just get over my issues…and I’m so tired of glasses.

What do you think?  Would you look more into surgery?

A paid study for folks with Depression

Listen, I’ve not been super “chatty” about some things in my life, although I’m feeling like I want to start sharing things with you.  I have suffered with depression off and on for most of my life.  It’s a “side” to my anxiety diagnosis, but it’s there, and it’s real, and it isn’t fun.  It isn’t a picnic.  Anyone who has lived with depression or loved someone with it can understand what a rocky road depression is to travel down.

Right now, my depression isn’t in the forefront, but as with many things of the mind, it fluctuates.  I know that some of you have struggled and lived with depression, in whatever form and for however long, and that is why I’m sharing this study about depression – because many times for me depression hit when finances were not great, and the thought of possibly helping someone else and getting paid would have been a good thing for me!

If you do suffer from depression, please call your doctor.  Please.  Don’t go that route alone.  There are ways to get help.

One of the things I recommend looking into from RadioShack is the FitBit Ultra.  The FitBit tracks not only your steps and activity levels but also sleep patterns.  It’s great and very discreet- not something obvious to anyone around you.  I actually brought it to the Chimpanzee premiere trip and then promptly left it on my capris I flew down in- which I didn’t wear again…so I have no idea what I walked while at Disney.  That was what I wanted to see, how many steps I took!!  OOPS!  It’s kind of fun, and kind of addicting, and gives me a chance to challenge myself to get my 10,000 steps in each day.  I find myself doing a lot more walking around the house and yard since it arrived.  Technology can be so much fun- and so beneficial to our health with gadgets like this!!

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are coming up quickly!! RadioShack has great gift ideas for anyone on your list…
