Save 20% on ecigarettes at V2 Cigs

V2 Cigs is having a 20% off promotion right now through February 28, 2013.  Why, you ask, am I sharing a coupon for anything relating to smoking?  Well, a few months ago I’d have been offended at the idea that I’d post something like this. But in talking to many others- other bloggers, friends, and more…I’ve learned that there are many folks who have been able to quit smoking thanks to electronic cigarettes, which is worth taking a look at.  I’m of the opinion that if you can find something that helps you to quit smoking and it works for you, you should go with that.  If the end result is that you aren’t smoking anymore, that’s a win for you and your loved ones.

What you get when you purchase V2 Cigs:  the V2 Standard Kit comes with an automatic and a manual battery, USB Smart Charger, wall adapter and ten flavor cartridges. The Ultimate Starter Kit ramps this up to 25 cartridges, a car charger, a USB-powered battery, another battery, a metal carry case, a portable charging case and a lanyard.

I’m not a dummy. I know so many people who smoke- even people in my daily life who don’t tell me they do- I can tell. I can smell it a mile away.  My feeling is, if you are going to continue, at least continue with the least harmful products.  I’ve seen that ecigarettes are purported to be less harmful to your body, and hey! Maybe you’ll be able to cut way back on your smoking, at the very least, or ultimately be able to stop all together.  You can find reviews on different kinds of e-cigarettes at (the largest source for electronic cigarette product reviews).

I’m not one to judge.  In fact, truth be told, I’ve smoked cigarettes in my lifetime.  I never will again, but yes, I have done it.  Stopping for me wasn’t a big deal but I also wasn’t a heavy smoker at any point in time. My husband smoked as well.  He had a much harder time than I did when he stopped, and I have to wonder if ecigarettes would have helped him through the transition time.  If you are a smoker, you are already spending a good amount of money on cigarettes.  Why not spend a little on a different kind and see what happens?  You may surprise yourself and find you are able to cut back, or even stop!

Enter the code  REVIEW20 to get your  20% storewide savings at you’ll also get FREE shipping with their current promotion, so this is a great time to make your purchase!

I Am No Longer an Omnivore; Why I Don’t Eat Meat

vegan plant strong kale beans foodI grew up eating meat like most Americans. I happily gobbled down my meatloaf and pork chops, never really thinking about the source of my food or the impact it could have on my body. I was a kid with a lot of allergies and milk was one. Now, I would be considered lactose intolerant. I will spare you all the unsavory details, but in hindsight I realize that no animals products ever settled well with my system.
At some point in my teens I stopped eating meat. I don’t know the exact date but it was shortly before Thanksgiving. My family didn’t really get it but they were supportive and I could always fall back on items with cheese..loads and loads of cheese. Over the years I was not consistent. Sometimes I just ate poultry and dairy, with an occasional burger, then it would just be dairy and eggs. Finally, I was not eating any meat but, cheese was an ingredient at almost every meal. I was gaining weight and my cholesterol was elevated.

Vegan Coconut bacon sandwich
I decided I had to make a change. I cut way back on my cheese, dairy and egg consumption. It was gradual and it was not easy. I am still not 100% vegan and I never will be. I consider myself “plant-based”.   The majority of what I eat comes from plants. I know many people think it is extreme to eat a plant-based/vegan diet.   Common questions are, “Where do you get protein from?”, “Do you eat grass?”, “Does it taste good?”   I eat well, i  still love cooking and still eat out at restaurants. It takes a bit more planning especially when traveling but I have had some great “vegan” meals at all types of places.
Since cutting animal products and by-products out of my diet I have lost 40 lbs and found an energy level that I thought I left behind in my 30s. One key to my success is finding support. My husband has switched to plant-based eating and also lost close to 40 lbs. My mother, whom had given up on weight loss, has lost 50+ lbs so far, she started working out, and has an amazing glow about her. Twitter has been a great source for recipes, cooking techniques and acceptance.  I also am a recipes tester for Happy Herbivore’s cookbooks.

Everyday Happy Herbivore

I don’t consider myself a vegan, I am more likely to say I eat a plant-based diet.  Really, no label is needed, I am just another person going through life, making choices and doing my best on a daily basis.

Have you thought of continuing education online? (Giveaway – 2 $1000 Tuition Winners!)

I’ve been a stay at home mom going on 8 years now.  The time is coming when I’ll re-enter the work force at a more “regular” part-time position.  Part of me is all “oh hey, I’ll be fine, I’ll just get a job at a school (my degree is in Early Childhood Studies with a minor in Child Development)…but then part of me is a tiny bit panicked like what if no one hires me? What if what I learned about kids is 100% changed now and they won’t want me because I’m out of date and out of touch?!  So I’ve tossed the idea around about going back to school.  Maybe for educational courses, maybe not. It’s really made me stop to think about the importance of continuing education online.  Have you thought about it?

ivy-bridge-college-tuition giveaway

With the internet being so prevalent in today’s society it’s no wonder there are colleges that offer courses online (or maybe most do, I’m honestly not sure).  I can tell you that as we are all so busy and on the go so much, being able to access course materials on our own schedules is great- I think it offers more people a way to continue their education who may never have been able to otherwise.  My niece in law is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree and is completing many of her credits online.  It’s hectic but it also means she can do her coursework and check in when it’s convenient for her schedule, from the comfort of her home, instead of needing that time to commute to class at a set day and time.

My sister just finished her Associate’s Degree this past spring.  She’s 52.  She enrolled in a local 4 year program and is pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree.  She’s been considering doing some online work as well.  She’s busy, she volunteers, and has a lot of commitments, so for her to be able to take courses online is a benefit.

All of my siblings are each at least 11 years older than I am, save one who’s 22 months older.  That’s 7 siblings I’ve watched grow up, graduate high school, and pursue their lives.  Most did go to college on the “traditional plan” but some didn’t.  One brother went into the Air Force, finished his service and returned home to live with us while he was attending college.  He couldn’t attend classes and work in his field to support himself due to the time constraints of when and where courses were held.  I know my mom went back to school, at some point, before I was born- she actually started her labor with me while she was taking the Bar Exam!  But she’d gone to college after high school to pursue a nursing degree- then the Air Force- and then law school.  I think it would have been a lot easier for my mom and that brother to be able to take classes online to further their studies! It’s amazing to me how many people I know who have re-visited the school thing  and gone back to school to pursue more training or an additional degree.

Having a degree in higher education can make a huge difference for an individual or a family.  For me, it may well mean I’m able to get my foot in the door even to be a classroom aide in our school- simply because I do have a Bachelor’s Degree.  For some of my brothers, degrees in higher education meant substantial pay increases, and opportunities to advance in their company they may not have otherwise been offered.  For some, it’s just achieving a dream of obtaining that degree.  For others, it’s a way to better their life.  In any case, being able to pursue courses towards a degree in today’s society through an  online college offers a huge benefit for so many- it saves time- no commuting, no parking, no walking from said parking to your class, accessing course content and discussion at times that work for you.  It may mean for many families not having to incur the cost of childcare while you attend school.  That alone can be the difference between able to make the degree happen or not making it happen.

Blick Art Materials Helps to Support Art with Art Room Aid

I’m guessing that you’ve probably heard of Blick Art Materials.  Some of you may even have had the pleasure of visiting on of their stores!  We have one about 45 minutes from my house- I need to get over there. I haven’t been since we moved to this house going on 8 years now. Blick Art Materials focuses on offering quality products, huge selection, and a skilled, knowledgeable staff who not only know to help you with what you are looking for but also are able to give suggestions and options for other things for educational and professional needs.

art room aid blick art materials

Not only does Blick Art Materials but they have also started a wonderful project called Art Room Aid which they started in 2009. Clearly Blick Art Materials has always supported arts in education, including art scholarships and helping to create lesson plans to meet core curriculum standards to help educators- Art Room Aid kind of took things a step further.  Art Room Aid provides the tools to easily share your dreams and funding needs without complicated applications or fees that take away from contributions. If you’re an arts advocate you can quickly locate a project that resonates with you and make a high-quality contribution that will go directly to a project in need.

Art is all around us, in everyday life and on special occasions.  It’s in our work, our play, our love, and so much more.  We need to find ways to support arts in education the way Blick Art Materials is with Art Room Aid- or similar!  I understand that the economy is rough but it makes me so sad that the arts are one of the first things to “go” in so many school districts.  I try to support however I can- sending glue in when I find sales, or markers, crayons, supplies- in the hopes that that can free up some money to do other things.

I was very happy to be able to offer my son’s Kindergarten teacher the chance to work together on this so that she could create a project based on her ideas and not just on what was available due to budget constraints.  I won’t lie, she was very excited to have this chance.  I was excited to share it with her.  She’s really excited to do a Paper Flowers Project with the children in her class, which goes along with a writing activity she’s got planned for April of this year.  Please visit and check out the Paper Flowers Project List for Mrs. R and we’d love if you could support the classroom, or share this with someone who may decide they’d like to support.  Every little bit helps!  (Clicking the image below also will take you to the project list page)

How do you feel about arts in education?  Do you feel as I do? I want to know! I also want to know what your favorite projects were in the classroom growing up.

Freedom of speech and expression can lead to NO MAS!

No Más Oppression! No Más Censorship! No Más Silence! Change can start with two simple words…NO MÁS!

sarah kavanagh gets rid of BVO in gatorade

James Edward Bates for The New York Times

Freedom of expression and freedom of speech can wield some pretty amazing results.  Big things, little things, in between things- many of these happened because one person said “no more.” or really, NO MAS!  Someone has to start.  SomeONE has to say, no more.  No more chemicals in our water supplies.  No more growth hormones in cows who produce milk for us to drink.  No more

The above photo is of Sarah Kavanagh, a now 16 year old girl who used her freedom of speech and freedom of expression and got over 200,000 others to stand behind her- against the PepsiCo to get them to stop using BVO (a chemical used in flame retardant materials) in their Gatorade products.  She won.  Sarah’s vegan, and had looked at the ingredient label before drinking the Gatorade, to be sure there wasn’t anything she couldn’t have.  Not recognizing what BVO was, she researched and wasn’t happy with the results.  So she started a petition.  Kind of amazing what the power of speech can do!

Think of where this society would be had Rosa Parks just stood up and gone to the back of the bus.  What if Martin Luther King never shared his dream, but kept that to himself?  What if no one ever thought to say hey, there should be some kind of minimum wage for workers?

Of course, there’s also freedom of expression gone…a little too far, at least for some?    Like Leysa, who let her new boyfriend tattoo his name on her face (the tattoo is over 5 inches tall) just 24 hours after meeting him in person for the first time.   There’s an awful lot of people giving commentary on her choice of expression…I’m not sure I’d tattoo my face for anyone!

The world changes when we speak up. Freedom of expression is an important and often forgotten right.

For many, freedom of expression is not a given.  In some places, you can be jailed or worse simply for what you chose to wear- or do.  There are 2 brothers from Cuba, Antonio Michel Lima Cruz and Marcos Maiquel Lima Cruz who were jailed for dancing to hip hop music while holding the Cuban flag.  Jailed, like right now.

Nabeel Rajab, a civil rights leader from Bahrain’s is in prison for tweeting on Twitter.  He’ll be serving a 2 year sentence.  There are petitions you can sign to get Rajab and the Lima Cruz brothers freed.

Freedom of expression is important to each and every one of us.  I’d not be where I am today without it- my life would be totally different.  For many…life would be different in negative ways.  Freedom of expression is important for each and every one of us on this planet.   Right now, I am exercising my freedom of expression and free speech to say NO MAS! to automatic guns.  After the events in December in Newtown, CT, just over an hour from me, and several that have followed, I honestly am not “in the middle” about guns anymore. I can understand and respect that there are many who feel safer and protected having guns and firearms in their possession.  But I cannot understand having automatic nor semi-automatic weapons.  I want the government to ban these weapons.  We’ve seen how bad things can be, and if you let yourself think about how much ammunition that shooter had on his person, you can very easily see how much worse it could get.

no mas automatic guns

What will YOU use your freedom of expression and freedom of speech to say NO MAS! To!?!?

1.     Create a personalized No Mas Badge with an issue you feel passionate about or have fun sharing what makes you scream No Mas! Share your badge with family and friends!
2.     Sign the Petitions to stand up for the freedom of expression and setting two victims free.
