Dog and cat weight loss #PerfectWeight

We feed them, we nurture them, and we dedicate a large part of our lives ensuring that they are healthy and developing as they should be. Even when they’re naughty and break things around the house, we still love them unconditionally. And when they hurt, we hurt. We do everything that we can to avoid pain for them, because we love them. If you’ve guessed by now that I’m speaking about your children, you’re on the right path! Today, we’re talking about your 4-legged family members. Your cats and dogs.

These are our babies, which never grow up. They are a part of our family, but unable to speak and verbalize their needs, or when they are in pain. That is why it is SO important that we do our best to keep them as healthy as possible, so that they may lead long and healthy lives! Did you know that over 50% of pets in the U.S. are overweight?  This is disturbing due to the fact that 5 extra pounds on a dog is equivalent to an extra 30 pounds on a human! As you can imagine, this extra weight can lead to serious health issues just like it can with adults. Dog and cat weight loss is possible!

The Joy of the Right Pet

The Joy of the Right Pet

the perfect pet

This post about how welcoming a new pet into your home is always a joyous occasion is a guest post. Puppies, kittens or even iguanas add play and companionship to any family. However, the success of that introduction depends upon taking a few steps to ensure comfort not only for your family, but also for your new pet. Following three easy guidelines will go a long way to building a positive life-long relationship.

Choosing the Right Pet

There are a number of important factors to finding the right pet for your family. The first thing to consider is the time you will need to devote to your new pet. Do the adults in the house work? Are the children old enough to take some responsibility, like feeding or walking the new pet? For instance, if both parents are away during the day, a new puppy will not be getting the interaction, training and exercise necessary to develop into a good family pet. On the other hand, a cat does not need that level of attention, and may work well in a working household. Other low maintenance pets like fish or turtles may work well to introduce small children to the responsibility of pet ownership without adding tasks to parents’ already busy schedules. Also, consider your living circumstances. For instance, a Great Dane is fine on a 5-acre lot but miserable in an apartment. Choose the pet that best fits your family’s level of activity and space.

Make the Right Preparations

While toys are important, it is critical to have the necessary materials before your pet comes home. You can often find things like food and water bowls, leads, harnesses and collars, and high-quality pet foodat retail outlets. Additionally, you can find discounts and savings at MyCoupons or others online or in the paper, allowing you to save a bit on these necessary purchases. If you are going to have your dog spend any time outside, you must provide adequate shelter, which means buying a doghouse and providing a fence to keep them safe. Cats need a quiet private space where you can set up a clean litter box and a scratching post so they don’t shred your furniture. Exotic pets like chameleons, iguanas and some tropical birds require carefully controlled conditions and special foods. You should research these animals first to understand what is necessary to keep them healthy.

Choose a Vet and Get a Health Check

Young animals will need to have their shot regimen begin immediately. For puppies and kittens, this means a commitment to a 12 to 16 week course of vaccinations. Older pets will need to have rabies boosters, tags and often a license. Even if you adopt your pet from the ASPCA or the local shelter where rudimentary care has been provided, you ought to get a health check before you bring them home. Often shelters only vaccinate against rabies, so you will need to find out what else your pet needs, including Parvo shots for puppies, and Feline Leukemia boosters for kittens. Some shelters are rife with conditions like kennel cough or parasites, and so it is important to get these problems seen to immediately. Ask your friends with pets for recommendations, check out reviews online on sites like Angie’s List, and make an office visit before you choose the vet. These steps will ensure that you choose the clinic that best meets your needs.

Pets add quality to life, and provide companionship and joy to every member of the family. Beginning that relationship on the right footing by following these guidelines will insure a long and healthy life for your pet.

Catching snowballs with Tobey #RecipeForMoments

This post is sponsored by Nature’s Recipe® on behalf of the BlogPaws Blogger Network. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about Nature’s Recipe For Moments on behalf of Nature’s Recipe, but we only share information we feel is relevant to our readers. Nature’s Recipe is not responsible for the content of this article

Our family is a pet family. I can’t imagine ever not having a pet. I’ve had dogs my entire life, and since I met my husband, cats too.  The thing about our beloved pets is that they aren’t “just” a pet.  They are a part of the family.  When my kids talk about our family, they name Tobey, Rosabeth and Lloyd.  We celebrate their birthdays.  But one of my favorite things about having our pets is how they are with us in happy and in sad times…and they are just there, accepting our love and giving it in return.

Our Tobey is almost 13 years old.  You’ve seen him before, in my favorite Tobey picture of all time.

In this picture, we’d just removed some burrs from the yard from his fur.  He was saying thank you.  We’d been playing Frisbee and he chased one into the bushes in the side of the yard.

When my mom died, Tobey did not leave my side, not once, except to go outside.  He was there, laying right up next to me or curled up at my feet for days.  When each of our kids were born, Tobey kept steady watch over each of them.  He’d lay under the swing or outside their door.  He’s shared so many of our family moments and he’s just been such a huge part of our family for so long!

As Tobey gets older, he’s not able to do as much.  He’s slower to get up, and it’s clear that his hips have been starting to ache more and more of the time.  Given that it’s winter, it’s harder to bring him to a pond or lake to splash in the water and have  swim.  But we still love to give him play time, and have him be an active part of our family.  Since winter is cold and he can’t do what he normally does outside, we improvise.

tobeysnow catch

Tobey’s favorite winter moments are when we bring him outside and toss snowballs in the air for him to catch, and then come inside and snuggle in front of the fire. The snowball catching is when he’s happiest.  He LOVES catching snowballs! He gets so excited when we toss them, and once in a while, he even gets his puppy crazies as we call them, and starts running in circles. I love seeing him so excited and active- and I love watching my kids play the same things we’ve played together with Tobey with him.

When cats don’t like to use the litter box #PreciousCat

This post about litter box issues is sponsored by Precious Cat on behalf of the BlogPaws Blogger Network . I am being compensated for helping spread the word about Precious Cat’s Cat Attract formula, but This Mama Loves only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Precious Cat is not responsible for the content of this article.” raistlin When cats don’t like to use their litter box….and other tales from the crypt. Er, um. I mean Martin family. I grew up never having had a cat.  Never not ever.  Since meeting the fabulous Mister of mine, who had a kitty named Raistlin (above) when we met, I’ve pretty much never not had a cat.  Raistlin was 14 1/2 when she passed on.  She was awesome about using her litter box…until the last few months of her life.  Or maybe if the kids locked her in a room (not her fault). Then Sunshine kitty came along and LOVED her litter box, went to it from moment one and that was that.  Except the times we found some little presents in the corner of OUR bedroom (and ours only).

Now we have 2 kitties, Lloyd and Rosabeth.  (Lloyd, also known as Moose Kitty, is the bigger one). They are PRETTY good about using the litter box. (I feel like I have to take a moment right now to tell you my 4 year old calls it a glitter box and I feel like it’s such a better term for it…and also, sometimes we think about slapping some mod-podge and glitter on the tops of our boxes just because it look fabulous… then we come to our senses). But there are times, and they seem to take turns having this ‘mood’ that they seem to forget where the litter box is or are mad at us and decide to use other facilities for their business. It’s annoying, it’s gross, and it stinks (in more ways than one). Litter box issues can pop up at any time, and I would prefer to take steps to prevent that. cat_attract So when I heard about Quality Products for Cats®, I was intrigued by the Cat Attract Litter Formula that they make.  A cat litter meant to attract cats to want to use it?  Interesting.  Intriguing.  Happy endings for many cats? Maybe.  Non-use of the litter box is the number one behavioral reason cats are abused, abandoned and placed in shelters. (This is news to me. I had no idea of this statistic but it’s sad, and I’m happy there are professionals who want to do something to decrease this number). Dr. Elsey’s goal is to provide products that help cats live happier, healthier lives and provide litter box solutions for the life of your cat. This new scoopable litter provides a solution for cat owners whose cats do not use their litter box. Blended with a natural herb attractant, Cat Attract’s herbal scent, ideal texture and particle size combine to solve litter box problems.

So what is it about the Cat Attract and Kitten Attract Litter Formulas that makes them work for cats and kittens?

(The following is an excerpt from an interview that BlogPaws did with Dr. Elsey, creator of the Cat Attract products).

The kitten attract formula has a finer particle size which is better suited to the small size of a kitten’s paw. There’s no reason a cat owner couldn’t continue using the kitten formula on an older cat but it tends to track a lot more than the Cat Attract does. Cats like a litter that is as close to sand as possible, from a texture standpoint; studies back up that point. Using sand isn’t an option because, even though cats like it, it doesn’t absorb. In the beginning stages of litter training a kitten starting with a finer litter size encourages use of the litter; the Kitten Attract litter is formulated with an herbal essence that is pleasing to a kitten. The switch to Cat Attract litter can be made once the kitten is around one year old. The Cat Attract formula has a different herbal essence that is found to be more pleasing to the older felines.

Dr. Elsey also mentioned things that I wasn’t aware of- often times, when cats have blood in their urine, it’s due to stress and not infection.  Things that can cause your kitty stress?  Dogs, other cats in the home, small space, and people.  In our house, ,we have 5 people, 2 cats and a dog.  We do give the cats free roam of our house, so they have a good amount of space to roam, although it’s not a huge space, I think they have places to run and play.  One of their favorite “jungle gyms” is my son’s batman bed… So what are some immediate tips to help with this even before we try this new litter? 1. Make sure each cat has their own litter box (I’m so happy we have 2 already, win for the Martin family!) 2. Scoop the litter DAILY 3. Keep the litter box someplace that’s not super noisy.  Next to a washing machine can startle them if it’s running. 4.

Do you have cats? Do they ever have litter box issues?

Getting rid of ticks #TickFreeFall

There is nothing that makes my stomach turn faster than a plump tick on my dog or cat.  I remember years and years ago seeing one on our family dog and wondering why there was a jelly bean stuck to her fur when it wasn’t anywhere close to Easter and no one had had jelly beans in the house (I would have known about THAT, let me tell you). When I showed my dad, he explained what it was.  I was so grossed out but at the same time, felt so so bad for our dog.  Ever since then I’ve been hyper vigilant about ticks.  For pets and people.  Some kinds of ticks can make our furry family members very sick but they can also make people very sick.   Ticks carry deadly diseases such as Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. I try to just keep them far, far away from all of us. Getting rid of ticks isn’t always a one-and-done kind of activity, unfortunately.

I am being compensated by PetArmor for my  participation in this campaign with  Mom It Forward Blogger Network.

So how DO you keep ticks away from you, or start the process of getting rid of ticks?

1. Keep your living quarters cooler, not warmer. Fleas and ticks love to be warm and snuggly.

2. Use a product like PetArmor solution on cats and dogs  solution for flea and tick protection for both dogs and cats. It KILLS the four major types of ticks including those that carry Lyme disease. PetArmor contains the same No. 1 vet-recommended active ingredient Fipronil found in Frontline brand products, and provides the same protection against adult fleas and ticks but is available for significantly less.

  • While pet owners are very aware of the danger of bloodsuckers like ticks, fleas and mosquitos during the summer months, many do not realize that these bugs stick around well into the cooler fall season. In fact, some species of ticks, such as the American Dog Tick and the Deer Tick, are more active during the transition into fall. Fleas also survive happily in a nice warm home.

    • The adult stage deer tick actually begins its feeding activity about the time of first frost (or early October throughout its range), and it will latch onto any larger host (cat to human) any day that the temperature is near or above freezing.  Adult female deer ticks can transmit Lyme Disease.  Another tick that carries Lyme disease is the Blacklegged tick. The adult stages of this tick begin to become active as the season changes from summer to fall.

3. Get rid of those weeds.  Stay on top of things.

4. Check, check and check regularly. Check people and animals for any ticks regularly- we check nightly.

5. When going in woods, wear long pants and tuck them into your boots if possible.

6. Don’t let kids play in tall grass/weeds.  If they do- check thoroughly for ticks.

7. Take off the shoes.  Always.  Ideally, keep shoes out of the house altogether (that’s not doable for us, but we do remove shoes in the breezeway. There’s a lot more than ticks that come in with shoes so really, just keep them at the door!!

Emergency Preparedness for Pets #HillsPet

Emergency preparedness for pets (and humans), also known as disaster preparedness, is a hot topic right now.  One thing that many of us haven’t always remembered to include in our disaster kits, emergency kits, etc. is anything our pets would need to survive for an amount of time.  Hills Pet Nutrition began a Natural Disaster Relief Network earlier this year as part of their Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love program. It’s sad that there’s such a need for this but at the same time, really great that companies are seeing a need and DOING something to fill it.

This post is sponsored by Hill’s. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about Hill’s Science Diet for Cats, but This Mama Loves only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. is not responsible for the content of this article.”

Here are some tips for emergency preparedness for pets offered by Dr. Dan Aja, Director of U.S. Professional and Veterinary Affairs at Hill’s Pet Nutrition:

  • Ensure your pet can be identified by either a microchip or collar ID tag, with updated contact information.

  • Prepare an emergency box of pet supplies that is readily accessible in the event of an evacuation. Emergency kits should include: first aid supplies and guide book; a 3-day supply of pet food in a waterproof container and bottled water; a safety harness and leash; waste clean-up supplies; medications and medical records; a contact list of veterinarian and pet care organizations; information on your pet’s feeding routine and any behavioral issues; comfort toys; and a blanket.

  • Display a pet rescue decal on your front door or window to let first responders know there is a pet in the house. Include veterinarian’s contact information.

  • Identify a location to take your pet if you need to leave your immediate area – keep in mind that disaster shelters for people may not be able to shelter pets. Scout hotels/motels with pet friendly policies and ask relatives or friends if they could house you and/or your pet.

  • If you need to evacuate, consider taking a pet carrier or crate if possible for transport and safe-keeping.

  • Carry a good picture of your pet with you in the event of separation during evacuation. Learn where your pet likes to hide in your house because pets may hide if they are scared. Finding them quickly will help you evacuate faster.

Thinking about and preparing for the worst isn’t fun.  But being prepared is smart and it’s important.  That includes everyone who lives in your house.  I honestly never specifically thought to include our Tobey, Lloyd and Rosabeth in our emergency plans- mostly I think because I took for granted we’d plan for them too.  I do know that we’ll be more aware and adding some items to our emergency items in the basement so that our pets are more comfortable.  (Hopefully none of us will ever need these kits!!)  Really, I can’t imagine NOT including them- they are part of our family.  My kids will insist that there are 4 boys in our house- Daddy, Brother, Lloyd the kitty and Tobey the dog.  The girls, in turn, count 4 girls- me, big sis, little sis, and Rosabeth the kitty.

The Hills Food, Shelter & Love program has been around since 2002.  They’ve been helping to feed homeless pets for over 11 years, helping to fill the bellies of over 100,000 homeless pets daily.  This program not only helps to fill the bellies of homeless pets, but helps pets to find homes, and to educate new pet parents.  This new Natural Disaster Relief Network is not actually new, but is newly formalized – the folks at Hills have been helping veterinarians and shelters across the country for a long time when disaster strikes.

If you have pets, are you prepared for them in case of emergency?  Do you have pet items in your disaster kit?

On Kittens, Catbearding and Cat Litter #ClubFreshStep

If you haven’t met them yet, we have two new family members in our house.  They are brother and sister, born in early June of this year, and their names are Rosabeth (named by our 4 year old) and Lloyd (as in LEGO Ninjago Lloyd). We recently got some Fresh Step  cat litter to try with them at Sam’s Club.  We’ve never actually had two cats before and, well, the um…litter needs are much greater now than they were with our other cats.   Pleasant?  No.  Necessary? Yes.
I haven’t ever gotten cat litter at a club store before.  In case you are wondering, it’s heavy.  So plan accordingly.  The Fresh Step has a cool handle on it that makes it easier to carry, but it doesn’t actually make it lighter.  You’re still going to be lifting 42 lbs of cat litter.  I am pretty happy with the packaging, because it was a bag and I can toss it right into the recycling bin when we’re done with it (and of course, AFTER I enter my paw points!) With the boxes we’ve gotten previously, there’s the breaking down of the box and we’ve never had any kind of rewards points from buying litter- that’s a sweet bonus!  We always got what was on sale and never had any issues with the litter box odor or anything before. with either of our other cats.  Now? With 2?  So totally not the case.
When the kittens are happy, they let us snuggle with them and play.  I’ve tried to do some catbearding with them, although with my big head (ha!) and their little tiny heads, we look a bit silly… I guess that’s what catbearding is all about!?
That’s me with Rosie (Rosabeth) above.  She’s not really keen on adults holding her- although she lets the girls tote her around in baskets and carry her around all day.  She’s our feisty little peanut who’s always getting stuck in unfortunate places.  She’s good for laughs and really likes to chase the vacuum hose.
Lloyd’s a pensive little kitty.  This was as beard-y as he was going to get.  Or is.  We’ve tried many times.  You can almost see his eyes pleading to please, bring me to a less crazy house.  Almost. He’s actually my little love bug.  Once the kids go to bed, he’ll come snuggle with us- but if YOU ever try to pick him up or snuggle him first?  He’ll bolt.  He’s all about doing things on his terms.
I’m happy we’ve discovered Fresh Step– with our small house and no dedicated laundry room, the cats’ litter box has to live in our breezeway, so we don’t want things to be getting stinky in there.  We use the breezeway 99% of the time going in and out of the house and we don’t need people thinking we’re a stinky cat family. Fresh Step has carbon and borax in it to help absorb odors naturally- and essential oils to add a fresher scent.
fresh step at home#shop

Essential oils have been found to stop the growth of odor-causing bacteria, as well as inhibit mold growth.  Both paw-activated and moisture-activated, essential oils eliminate odors on contact, “blooming” to create a shield against bad odors.  Certain components of essential oils bind with malodors to create a new, larger molecule with no odor—essentially neutralizing bad smells as well as airborne bacterial odors.

Head to Fresh Step before October 31st to get DOUBLE paw points on your purchase!  When you go to redeem your points, choose Sam’s Club in the drop down menu and enter your code.  That’s it.  Easy, peasy.

Should you try Grain-Free Cat Food? #HillsPet #Giveaway

When you welcome a pet into your family, you also welcome all that comes with it.  The care and keeping of pets includes many things- love, affection, veterinary care…feeding.  We want our pets to have a healthy, happy life, and one way to make sure they have a healthy life is by choosing food that has a balance of nutrients and is the proper recipe for your pet’s stage in life.  You aren’t going to feed a kitten adult food, nor should you feed an adult cat kitten food- but there’s more to pet foods than just recipes based on needs for each age/stage of their lives.  There’s been a lot of talk about Grain-Free Cat Food lately, and while I’m certainly not going to tell anyone what they should be feeding their pets, I will absolutely share information I find helpful so that we can make informed choices FOR our pets. This post is sponsored by Hill’s. We are being compensated for helping spread the word about Hill’s Science Diet for Cats, but This Mama Loves only shares  information we feel is relevant to our readers. Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. is not responsible for the content of this article.

Hill’s® Science Diet® Grain-Free cat food offers the precise balance of nutrients your cat needs for optimal health without any grains! The first ingredient REAL CHICKEN – and no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.

So what IS Grain-Free Cat Food ?  It’s a formula of cat food designed for those cats who’ve got an allergy or sensitivity to grains (which can cause upset stomach and/or dry, itchy skin) or for cats who’s owners prefer to eat a grain-free diet and want their pets to do the same.  It isn’t carb-free (and actually can be the same or have more carbs because of the ingredients replacing the grains to keep that balance of nutritional needs). Grain-Free cat foods often have sweet potatoes in them, which offer a lot of nutritional value but also offer carbs.  Grain free cat food has a balance of nutrients to both replace what grains offer and also to keep their bodies healthy.

Grain-free does not mean carb-free or that the food is high in protein. In fact, grains are often replaced with ingredients such as sweet potatoes which provide similar or even higher carbohydrate levels, allowing for grain-free foods to still provide complete nutrition for your cat. Remember – whether or not you feed grain-free, balanced nutrition is the key to good health for your pet. Nutrient excess, such as high phosphorus or high salt, may be a problem with some health conditions.

Whatever food you choose, you DO want to make sure you are feeding your furry family members a food diet that offers a nutritionally balanced recipe.  Too much of one thing and too little of another that your cat needs is not going to do them any good.  The key is balance.  We have 2 kittens in our home- they aren’t going to be ready for the Grain-Free cat food for several months.  They are both eating kitten food which is made FOR kittens and their digestive systems.  When they are old enough for adult foods?  We’ll be discussing what dietary options are best for them with the vet.  Hill’s Pet is a brand we will look at FIRST. I recommend always talking with your vet about your pet’s dietary needs.

Support literacy initiatives at Dollar General with MARS Petcare Products!

This post brought to you by Dollar General. All opinions are 100% mine.

It wasn’t until quite recently that I learned that Dollar General sells all the big brands you love at a great value! This is especially true for many pet care brands, including Pedigree® and Temptations® from MARS® Petcare Products.  It’s always nice to be able to save money on household costs, and being able to give back to others in the community is a huge bonus.  Dollar General is currently having a promotion where if you buy $10 worth of MARS® Petcare products at Dollar General  you will receive a coupon for a FREE book! *Participating Bendon Publishing books only, must be redeemed at Dollar General

When a shopper redeems their coupon for the FREE book, MARS® Petcare will donate $1 to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support Dollar General’s literacy initiatives.  So you buy petcare products that are at a savings from other stores, YOU get a free book, and  you’ll be able to give back to support literacy initiatives.  That’s a win for everyone.  Plus, at Dollar General, you are about to use manufacturer’s coupons to get an even bigger bang for your buck.

If you don’t have a pet in your home that eats eats Pedigree® or Temptations®, there are always animals in shelters or foster homes that could use some more food.  I know there is a trend (that I LOVE) with my daughter’s 2nd grade classmates to ask for donations for food banks and animal shelters in lieu of gifts- this means we can make that money stretch further with the lower price at Dollar General plus a manufacturer coupon…and then we also can get that free book and ensure that those literacy initiatives are supported.  That’s a win for many groups and many reasons- and you can do for others!
