Four Ways to Get Your Body Ready For Spring

“Disclosure: Compensation was provided by Walgreens via Mode Media. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author and are not indicative of the opinions or positions of Walgreens.”

For many of us, the winter months are a time of rest. It seems once school starts, we are heading toward the holidays at full speed. Instead of working out at the gym, we are cooking huge meals, visiting with friends, hosting parties and pretty much over indulging in many areas. If you are like most folks, you may pack on a few unwanted pounds during that time. No wonder people make those New Year’s resolutions!

get body ready for spring

With spring upon us, here are a few ways you can get your body ready for spring:

Food: Put away those casserole dishes and get to the farmer’s market! This is a great time of year to get fresh fruits and vegetables your body has been craving.

Beverages: Water, water, water and more water! Get rid of the soda, fruit juices and other sugary drinks and trade them for good old H20.

Exercise: It is time to stretch your limbs and get them moving. Start out by simply walking. You will be amazed at how great you feel after a walk around the block.

fitness clothes

Vitamins: Our bodies need vitamins and minerals and we don’t always get those from the food we eat. To stay healthy in the spring, you need to be on a vitamin routine.

Vitamins help our body work the way they should. If we don’t take them, our bodies can begin to break down.  For my spring health routine, I take several vitamins that give me healthy hair, nails, skin, internal organs and eyes. For healthy skin and a strong immune system, I take Vitamin A while Vitamin D keeps my teeth, bones and nails nice and strong. Vitamin C is a must have to fight those spring colds I tend to get.

So, where should you go to get all your vitamins, supplements and minerals you need for your healthy body? I go to my trusted Walgreens. Not only do they have a huge selection of all the products I need, they have a staff on hand to answer all of my questions.

When shopping for vitamins, you might find it useful to know that you can help a child in need with every vitamins or supplements purchase at Walgreens. Millions of children around the world are suffering from ‘hidden hunger’, a lack of micronutrients that can lead to disease and even death. In fact, 45% of all childhood deaths are attributable to under-nutrition. Walgreens is giving a portion of all vitamin retail sales to Vitamin Angels to help 100 million children in the U.S. and abroad get the vitamins they need to live well.

Be prepared for surprises no matter where you are!

After a winter hiatus, I’m back to doing the Couch 2 5k program.  I’m plugging along, at my “perky walk” pace, but in my mind, plugging along counts regardless of how fast you are.  I may never meet my awesome cousin’s running pace, but I’m totally ok with that.  I have to be honest though, one thing that happens to me so often, and to so many others (many of whom have also been pregnant), is a little leakage while exercising.  That doesn’t make for comfort while running/jogging/walking/perkywalking/exercising/moving/sitting. It’s embarassing, totally annoying, but you know what? It happens to a LOT of us.  I’m just one of the few who will speak to it. Part of being active is being prepared for what may happen- no matter where you are… or what you are doing! Some things, we cannot plan for. But some? You totally can! This post is brought to you by our friends at Depend, opinions are my own.  I am participating in a Vibrant Influencer network campaign for the Depend brand. I am receiving a fee for posting; however, the opinions expressed in this post are my own. I am in no way affiliated with Depend and do not earn a commission or percent of sales.

Monday of this week, I was in Boston and standing at mile 24 of the Boston Marathon.  Like in the rain, freezing, cheering on runners, right there in the moment.  As I cheered these amazing athletes on, it struck me over and over, that they have been running for a few hours and what would that be like if you have to pee or if you have a little leakage?  The discomfort that must create! Do you stop? Do you keep going? Does it matter? (Note here: I’ve been doing some searches online, and it seems some folks do stop to get a bit of relief. Others refuse to…and deal with the consequence).

Over 51 million American women experience bladder leakage. That’s 1 in 3 American women*.

  • There are many common causes of bladder leakage in women including pregnancy, childbirth and even diabetes.

To support the over 51 million women who experience bladder leakage, the Depend brand is introducing Depend Silhouette Active Fit briefs, a new moderate-absorbency brief that features a thin design for complete comfort with the trusted protection of the Depend brand and a lower rise+for an underwear-like look, fit and feel.

The Depend brand is also entering year two of Underwareness, a social movement and charitable cause to break down the bladder leakage stigma. As part of  Underwareness, the Depend brand is:

Encouraging people to show their support for women with bladder leakage. For every photo and video shared using #Underwareness, the Depend brand will donate $1, up to $3 million, through 2016 to fund charities that advance the research and education of bladder leakage.

Join the movement and request a free sample of Depend Silhouette Active Fit briefs at Together, we can show that wearing a different kind of underwear is no big deal.

In year two of Underwareness, the brand’s social movement and charitable cause to break down the bladder leakage stigma, Depend is joining forces with CVS Health to support women with bladder leakage as they navigate their path to better health.

Here’s some video footage (with a few minor comments from me)- I can’t imagine stopping so far into a 26.2 mile run.  I have to wonder how many runners might be wearing some kind of product (like Depend Silhouette Active Fit) that can help to absorb a little leakage. I think I might be one of them!

Are you a runner? Do you have leakage issues as well? How do you deal with them?

Supporting old injuries

I’ve started Couch 2 5k again.  (Yes, again…). I need NO excuses. None.  Zip.  I’ve decided that I’m going to support my weak spots while I start this journey so that they can start to strengthen and not hold me back. I don’t need an old injury popping up and messing with my progress! I’d rather take the time in supporting old injures to prevent a relapse than nursing a re-injured part back to health!

supporting old injuries

I’m actually really liking the  new Brand Elastic Bandage with the improved ACE™ Brand Clip. They have all the same features and qualities we’ve trusted as long as I can remember, but the new fastener leaves those old metal clips with the prickly prongs behind. If you have used an ACE™ Brand Bandage ever, I’m guessing you may have also poked yourself or snagged a piece of clothing on one of those fasteners!  Pain in the neck, they were.  The new ACE™ Brand Clip is MUCH better, feels more secure for keeping that bandage securely in place, and the best part? No stuck finger, no snagged clothes.  Bonus!

The ACE™ Brand Elastic Bandage with ACE™ Brand Clip come in 2 sizes- 3″ and 4″. That gives a lot of options and versatility. I need to support my right knee, I had a bit of surgery on it years and years ago and was told it wouldn’t ever be 100% again, and it’s absolutely not- I’m always aware of it when I move and exercise and want to be sure I’m protecting it before it’s injured again…what’s that saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?

For me, I think it would be better stated, a wrap of prevention is worth a pound lost!

supporting old injuries knee

Add another layer of confidence to your performance with the ACE™ Brand Elastic Bandage with ACE™ Brand Clip. The innovative fastener on the ACE™ Brand Elastic Bandage is quick, comfortable and secure –– so you can keep giving 100%. The fastener lets you adjust on the fly and won’t snag clothes. That means I can do my slow, turtle pace up the many (too many) hills in my neighborhood and not worry that the bandage will slip out of place!

  • The ACE™ Brand Clip snaps in place and holds securely
  • Easy to adjust
  • Prevents clothing snags
  • Provides customized compression
  • Provides firm support and compression for sprains and strains
  • Bandage retains elasticity after repeated use and washings

Do you use ACE™ Brand Elastic Bandages to support old injuries?

How to overcome exercise avoidance plus FREE Printable Workout Trackers

How to Overcome Exercise Avoidance

You want to exercise. You know it’s good for you and you know it makes you feel good… when you actually do it. But it just seems that for all your good intentions, you don’t get that exercise in your daily routine as often as you should. First, you’re not alone. A lot of people have this problem, especially before exercise becomes a daily habit for them. It can take a while to get to where you want to be. For those like me, it can take a long while.  Eons, maybe. :)

Here are some ways you can overcome exercise avoidance:

Create accountability-

One of the biggest reasons people get away with exercise avoidance is that they do not have a system in place to hold them accountable. If you had a personal trainer ringing your doorbell and dragging you out of bed, it’d be much easier to get things done. Well, this isn’t an option for everyone but you are surely able to create an accountability system that is practical for you. You need one or more people in your life who can help you be accountable for your fitness goals.

Mix up your routine-

Sometimes people avoid exercise because they’re just getting bored with what they’re doing. This is why it is very important to mix up the activities that you’re doing or where you workout so you can avoid boredom. Do something different, invite a friend or move from inside to outside.

Keep motivated-

It’s easy to exercise when you’re feeling motivated but how do you keep that motivated feeling when you’re tired or hungry or just don’t feel like exercising today? It’s important to have reminders of your goals and motivations. Some people create posters or hang things in their gym. Some people like to have a motivational scrapbook to remind them of their successes and goals. You might have some great workout music that gets you in the mood or a movie that makes you feel inspired. A printable workout tracker may help too (see below)

Start gradually-

If you’re having a hard time committing to exercise, you may want to slow down a little and start gradually. Sometimes people get excited or have New Year’s Resolutions and they try to do too much at once or too much at the start. Make small changes one at a time and work your way up. Take it slowly and then it will become natural and normal for you.

Track your progress-

Another way to stay motivated and skip exercise avoidance is to monitor your progress and track any improvements, no matter how small. This will help you see that it is working for you and you’ll be more motivated to keep it going. Don’t think that you should only track weight loss, for example. You could track measurements, energy levels, sleep patterns, mood and more.

A great way to track your progress is to use something like this free weekly printable workout tracker (download here: printable-workout-tracker-weekly)

Weekly Workout Tracker

Here’s a free printable monthly workout tracker for you, too (download printable-workout-tracker-monthly here)

Use the buddy system-

My friend Lisa (look! You made the blog!) and I both hate working out.  So, we try to work out together.  We usually complain to one another the whole entire time but at least we’re doing it.  Might seem backward to complain but at least we’re exercising while complaining.  And who knows. Maybe complaining actually makes you burn more calories? We can dream, right?

These are some ways to keep on track with your exercise plan. Ultimately, each one of us has to find something that works for us. We’re all different but these general ideas can be tailored to your specific needs and personality.

So, who’s working out today? What are your tips to overcome exercise avoidance?

New Year, New Mugs, New Resolutions #DunkinMugUp

So up until this morning, I was going to be all kinds of light hearted and silly in this post.  Happy 2014! Mugs up to a New Year and new resolutions to be healthier (and mine, specifically, to have moments…moments of exercise, of calm, of solitude, living in the moment).

And then I went to the doctor for a check in for my anxiety medication.

I thought I’d be in and out in 10 minutes, see you in a year.  But this was a new practitioner (I liked her a lot) and instead of ok we’re good, see you in a year, I was hearing things like “your blood pressure is really elevated.  We’ll check it again in 10 minutes”

And then the 10 minutes passed.

It didn’t drop.  So I figured she’d tell me to try to get exercise in and not be stressed and to come back in 2 weeks.  We’ve done that before.

But she didn’t say that.  Instead I heard “Your blood pressure is too high. You’re at risk of stroke, and you need to go pick up this medication and take it today, come back in 2 weeks to see if it’s helping, and we’ll talk more then.”

I’m sure we would have chatted more but I had to go get my little one at school and had to go.  So plans have changed.  Significantly.

I’m kind of freaked out.  I mean, Mug’s up to a New Year!!  But I’m going to be 40 this year- in just a few months- and to put it mildly, I’m not really “up for” having words like stroke in my vocabulary.  I have a whole other agenda for this year.

So, I still say let’s #DunkinMugUp!!  But I’m also saying, it’s game time.  I’m playing to win, not just be on the bench.  So while my coffee definitely energizes me, I’m hoping that healthier eating and regular exercise will recharge my systems to knock this blood pressure down.  Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a weighted exercise ball and a 10 minute workout calling my name. I was going to start tomorrow, but I think I’d better start today.

Mugs up, buttercups!

Home Workout Programs

When I am looking for home workout programs I want one that does not take too much time, has a flexible schedule and will give me results.  Beachbody has programs for anyone’s fitness needs.  We have several Beachbody programs and my husband believes in them so strongly that he recently became a Beachbody coach.

home workout programs

What does it mean to be a Beachbody coach?  Anyone can become a coach but it takes passion and commitment to be a good coach.  My husband, Spencer, wants to help people meet their fitness goals and maintain them. He will provide support, accountability and motivation through challenge groups and personal emails.   He started out doing P90X and was so pleased with the results that he decided to do the same program a second time.  He lost weight and toned muscles.  He gained confidence and he feels younger.  Spencer wants to share this experience with you.

A Note From Spencer

“One of the biggest concerns about fitness programs is schedule. Beachbody has been listening and geared their latest programs to fit into our busy schedules. I just completed Shaun T’s (from Insanity) Focus T25. This is a fantastic, upbeat program that focuses mainly on cardio and core strength for just 25 minutes a day, 5 days a week. And if you follow Tanya, you can do the low impact, modified moves and still get the same results.  When you join and stick with one of my facebook challenge groups, you will see weight loss, increased energy and support from a group of great people that will help you stay on track! I have just started replacing one meal a day with Shakeology, it’s an awesome shake with a daily dose of superfood nutrition that helps reduce cravings and gets the best results from your fitness efforts.  I love helping people improve their lives. It’s just amazing to see your own progress, and see others doing the same.”

My Beachbody Experience

I completed the TurboFire program and I am thrilled with the results.  I also lost weight and toned muscles that I though would never be toned.  Currently I am using the Les Mills Combat program and I love it.  The workouts are 30-45 minutes, fun, high energy and they have great music.  Between working full time, house work, soccer practice and all the usual mom duties, I often don’t have a lot of time for exercise.  Being able to workout at home for 30 -45 minutes a few times a week is something I can commit to.  I adjust the program schedule to fit my needs and Spencer checks in to see if I have done my workout, if not we talk about when I will do it.  Having someone check in with me helps to keep my focused and motivated.  Spencer does it in a supportive way and never makes me feel bad if I miss a workout but he won’t let me quit either.

So, are you interested in finding out more about BeachBody programs and challenge groups?

You can talk to Spencer on his Facebook page, BBCoachSpence, his Coach page or on Twitter.

Being prepared for anything- even bears and zombies #ReebokMoms

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Reebok about being prepared. I received a Famous Footwear gift card to purchase a pair of Reebok shoes to facilitate my review and to thank me for participating.

You know, I’ve seen a trend for a while about being prepared, emergency preparedness.  Don’t get me wrong, I totally agree that there are essentials for preparedness.  First aid items?  Absolutely!  Drinking water?  Yes, and really, DUH.  People can’t live without water.  Food supplies that won’t spoil? Absolutely!  But what I’m NOT seeing is all of the things you need to prepare for besides, well, things to sustain life.

For instance….what are you going to DO to pass the time?  I totally think that pencils, pencil sharpeners, paper and some puzzle books should be part of emergency preparedness.  Probably a few decks of cards. Being prepared isn’t just all of the necessities.

But not just for emergencies, you also need to be prepared in every day life.  In our family, we have fully stocked first aid kits in all of our vehicles.  When I say fully stocked I mean that my husband really truly wants us prepared for EVERYTHING so without an actual sterile operating room, if you get a boo-boo and I’m nearby, I can probably get you fixed up in the back of my van.

If you have children, you understand what I mean when I say that going out into public with kids means that you have to be prepared in a whole other sense of the word.  It’s not just about an extra set of clothes or diapers.  Nothing screams urgent situation like a hungry kid and a mom who has no snacks in the diaper bag and forgot her wallet.  Preparedness includes non-perishable on the go snacks that don’t make a huge mess, and also, small toys that are able to entertain small children for periods of time without making a ton of noise.  This is not an easy feat.  (Hey, here I was talking about feet, and now I’m saying feat….see what I did there?)  For real, though.  I have a small airtight container with some granola-type bars in it and other long-lasting snack foods right there by the first aid kit.  You NEVER KNOW.

Since I’m going to have to start fresh with the whole couch potato to finish perky walking (others may call it a snail’s pace jog, but I’m not others), I have to prepare for that. I need to prepare with proper footwear for the “running” I’ll be doing. I want for my feet to look happy.  Pink makes me happy.  Naturally, I look for running shoes with pink on them. Please note: I’d look for shoes in the “perky walker” category but apparently, that’s not actually a sport nor a footwear style.  So I’ll stick to running.  HOWEVER.  I’m sure if I was ever in these shoes and say, a bear started to chase me, I might be able to RUN and by run I mean R-U-N and maybe even fast, so I want to be prepared. So having cute sneakers?  Double preparation.  Both for the training program for the get-healthy-and-lose-some-weight and also in the run-for-your-life category.

Also something to prepare for? Zombies.  <Aren’t they supposed to come with the apolcolypse or something?>  Seems to me that if we are going to be working to get away from zombies, we may need some sturdy footwear. Thankfully, places like Famous Footwear offer all kinds of shoes in a variety of styles and colors to help you prepare for anything that may come your way on- and off-  the road.  If a zombie is going to chase me, I either want to have shoes that will help me run – FAST- or I want to at least have them look cute while I’m caught.  (Speaking of zombies, there IS a zombie run coming to the Hartford area in a month or two…who wants to go with me?)

Thankfully, I now have some nice, quality fall/winter shoes that I can safely navigate the mall and some terrain AND some SUPER cute Reebok running shoes….and I suppose I should log off and go work on actually being able to run.  I’m excited about my new shoes. Back to school shopping is fun and all but it’s also fun for MOM to get a little something new.  And hey, if I use the time when the kids are in school to get into shape and start running, when the zombies come….I’ll be good to go…and go….and go.  Away from bears, and zombies…and the school….

So I ask…can YOUR shoes help you run from zombies? Mine can!

Motivate me, please. Weight loss programs? Help!?

This is a sponsored post about finding a way to motivate myself.  Opinions are my own. So here’s the thing.  You know the “wagon” that I fall OFF of a lot?  Well, I’ve been off it so long I’m not sure I could find it again.  I actually kind of started a new one.  But it’s time, and I need to figure out some kind of something so I can MOTIVATE ME and kick my rear into gear.  Push my derriere into the air.  Move my feet to some kind of beat. I have been eating better.  MUCH better.  That’s helping. I have more energy.  But it’s time for me to look into some weight loss programs again.  Or have a personal someone come over and scream in my face and make me do the loathed 8 letter word E-X-E-R-C-I-S-E.  I have to.

So here’s where you come in.  And you.  And you and you and you and your cousin….neighbor…whoever.  I need the help.  I need real life, dragging through the mud stories of people like you and me who don’t have a trainer but who have honest-to-goodness real life before and after weight loss/weight loss success stories.  My friend A recently lost 53 lbs in just a few months and she’s looking- and feeling- downright fabulous.  And I am so so so SO proud of her!!  I don’t know how I feel about doing “shakes” and stuff.  I have a hard time with food textures.

Summer will be trickier for finding time to get things done, I have all three kids all day long right with me… Quite honestly, I have been moving a lot more- I’m in almost constant motion walking kids to and from things at the swim club and swimming a lot there and here in our pool at home. .  If I could get my littlest one to remove her tentacles I could maybe swim laps.  Or figure out how to swim for a few laps with her on my back (I have tried this, I’m not sure that’s a great idea…). The motion and having to snack on and drink only what we’ve brought with us for the day has also cut way back on caloric intake so I’ve definitely started moving the scale in the right direction but I want to FEEL better.  All around.   There are water aerobics classes 2 afternoons a week at the club for adults, I’m hoping to find a way to keep the kids busy and still let me participate.

I’ve done the Couch to 5k program successfully in the past and will do it again-I just don’t actually like the running part.  (Truthfully, I’m more a perky walker, and I think I’ve admitted that before….slow and steady is my pace!)  So maybe that.  Weight loss programs aren’t my favorite thing.  Not always my cup of tea.  Plus, there are so many to choose from.  SO Many. How do you know what to choose?

Really, I’m just tired. I am tired of hating how I feel.  Tired of hating how I look.  Tired of feeling “blech” more often than not and tired of my own damned excuses.  So let’s play a motivate game.  Please? Thank you? Let’s motivate me to find the right from the many weight loss programs out there that may WORK for me!!!

DDP Yoga Workout Program

Thank you to DDP Yoga for sending me their DVD and book set to try out.  If you haven’t seen the amazing transformation video of Arthur Boorman, a disabled veteran, you have to check it out.  He went from being told that he would never walk unassisted to being able to run again.  He credits his transformation to DDP Yoga.  After watching the video I knew I needed to try this program.

For all of you wrestling fans, DDP Yoga is instructed by Diamond Dave Page, former 3-time WCW World Champion Professional Wrestler.  He is a motivating and funny instructor. After a wrestling related injury Diamond Dave started treating his injury with yoga.  He then returned to wrestling and is using what he learned during his injury to help others.  DDP Yoga is for everyone.

I recently finished week 3 of the program and I feel great. I have high energy and feel more flexible already. I chose to do the advanced level but it also came with a schedule for beginner and intermediate.  Each workout is typically about 30 minutes long and has modifications so that everyone can go at their own pace.  Diamond Dave is encouraging, enthusiastic and entertaining.  I really have been enjoying this program and I like that I can pick up right where I left off if I get a bit off schedule.

About DDP Yoga

DDP Yoga is not traditional yoga, it’s a hybrid workout that incorporates some traditional yoga movements and adds dynamic resistance, active breathing techniques and power movements to make for a more challenging and results oriented workout.
The main benefits are body fat loss, lean muscle growth, and improved cardio levels all without placing undue stress on the joints. A valid comparison to yoga is they both provide increased flexibility and core strengthening.
It is currently used by professional football players, professional as well as amateur wrestlers, MMA fighters, and regular everyday people who want to perform at optimum levels and want to place themselves in the best position to see career and life changing results and improve their quality of life.
Take a look HERE to buy your DDP DVDs.
The DDP Yoga program was provided to me to facilitated this  review.  All opinions are my own.

Jimmy Dean 30 Day Breakfast Challenge (Prize Pack Giveaway)

jimmy dean 30 day breakfast challengeI think by now we’ve all seen the Jimmy Dean breakfast commercials at least once with the “Sun” in them.  I’ve kind of grown fond of them over time.  Of course, we love sausage, especially Jimmy Dean, in my family, so that helps.  I like that there are fun ways to remind us how important breakfast is- and how much it is part of our day.  I used to be a breakfast skipper.  Years and years I went without breakfast.  Not smart, not healthy, but there you go.  I can’t say I’d have been better had we had Jimmy Dean Delights around, but maybe.  I know that since having children I’ve become more conscious of needing breakfast and I’ve grown to love breakfast foods.

As this new year begins, I’ve decided I’m going to jump in and  take the Jimmy Dean and 100% Florida Orange Juice 30 Day Breakfast Challenge by taking a pledge each day.  I need to get back into exercise so I think having a small manageable goal will help.  A mile run- I can do that. I’ve done it before. Pledging things online seems to keep many of us on track so here’s hoping!

Of course, getting a free tumbler (while supplies last) for signing up is a fun extra (You can get one too!) and I have found that having a “fun” cup really helps me to be more likely to drink water throughout the day- it’s a silly thing, but add a fun design and a straw and I’m more likely to use a cup.  If it helps me to be healthier, I don’t see harm. Plus, who doesn’t love freebies?

Once you’ve signed up for the 30 Day Breakfast Challenge, you can enter the daily sweepstakes for a chance to win a $250 Walmart gift card. There will be 30 winners in 30 days, so you have a better chance of winning if you enter daily.  Who doesn’t want an extra $250 to start the new year?  You could get yourself some new clothes to workout in !

Save $1.25 on Jimmy Dean Delights when you buy 100% Florida Orange Juice. The coupon will be updated weekly and may change to visit frequently!

In honor of the 30 Day Breakfast Challenge, one reader will win a  prize pack that includes the following:

  • $50 Walmart Gift Card
  • Yoga Mat
  • 32 oz. Water Bottle
  • Pedometer
  • Watch (to get to work on time)
