Essential Oils for Family

What Are Essential Oils? Essential oils are natural, concentrated fragrant compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of a plant.  Essential oils have been used historically for therapeutic and medicinal purposes.  They are most recently know for the use in aromatherapyEssential oils can be used aromatically, topically and internally.  I use essential oils in a variety of applications at home.  I especially like to add them to my vinegar and water solution to clean around the house.

I decided to start with an essential oil kit. I got the Doterra Family Physicial Kit The kit includes 5 ml bottles of Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Oregano, Frankincense, Deep Blue, Breathe, Digestzen, and On Guard to help families address a variety of health issues. The kit also came with a 15ml bottle of Slim and Sassy and a Wellness Advocate Enrollment kit all for $166.67. The kit arrived quickly and safely. I started using it right away. Last night I put some lavender oil in a diffuser in my son’s room. He slept late this morning and it was because of the “stuff” I put in his room.

The kit comes with a recyclable plastic tray that holds the essential oils tightly in place when being shipped or transported. It also has a description of each oil and how they can be used.
The Doterra Family Physician Kit comes with 4 blends. I have been using the Deep Blue blend which is also available in a roll on and lotion. Deep Blue soothing blend is great for sore muscles and joints. It smells great and you can feel it working right away. This blend is intended for topical use only. I am sure that I will be ordering more soon.

The other blends are On Guard Protective Blend, Breathe Respritory Blend, and Digestzen Digestive Blend. I love these because I know exactly what is in them. There are no fillers or sugars or ingredients that are impossible to read. They are all natural!
Today I am using Peppermint oil in my new diffuser to help keep me alert and on task. It is also making the house smell delicious. I got this portable, USB difusser that will be great for traveling and on my desk.

GreenChoice Carpet Cleaning- Natural, Organic, and Green

We don’t have many carpets in our home- we have mostly hardwood floors, with 2 area rugs in the downstairs, and carpeting in our master bedroom. I have a carpet cleaner and do use it several times a year but I have been thinking that I’d really like to get our rugs deep cleaned professionally- especially now that my littlest is potty trained.  I just feel like it would give us a “fresh start” on things, without having to purchase new rugs and carpets.

My hesitation in using a professional cleaner has always been the chemicals used.  We avoid using harsh chemicals in our home, and in our yard, so I didn’t want to call and have someone do carpet cleaning using something that could be harmful to our children or our pets.  We’ve spent a lot of time and money learning about products that are safe to use with both animals and children in the home and I feel like that would be a waste to just end up using chemicals on our rugs!   Plus, I don’t want my family breathing in harsh chemicals and fumes if I can prevent that.

GreenChoice does not just clean carpets.  They offer mattress cleaning (am I the only person this never occurs to?) and air duct cleaning as well as a variety of other services.  They can also do rug repairs.  They work hard to make natural and organic, green cleaning affordable for just about everyone, which really makes me want to learn more about their company. It seems like so many times when companies are greener, the pricing is  far above what we could ever afford.

What do you do for deep cleaning for your carpets and rugs?  Do you do it yourself?  Hire a professional?

Viviscal Review: 3 Month Follow Up

You may remember our Viviscal hair growth supplement review and giveaway a few months ago. I was part of a group of bloggers who where chosen to try out this product for 3 months and report our findings. Viviscal is a hair growth vitamin supplement which stimulates thicker and faster hair growth of thinning hair due to:

  • Post-pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Hereditary
  • Stress
  • Medication
  • Poor Nutrition

I started taking this vitamin in March, after noticing significant hair loss and hair thinning post-pregnancy. I was desperate to try anything that might help, and was so glad to find a product that uses all natural ingredients. The vitamins come in a bubble pack of 60 for a months supply. You take one pill in the morning and one in the evening. The pills were average in size and easy to swallow. I had no adverse effects

from the pills themselves, even when taking them on an empty stomache. These were my observations:

  1. Within 1 week my rate of hair loss DRAMATICALLY decreased and eventually stopped altogether (after one month).
  2. My fingernails started to grow really quickly and became quite thick. I noticed this after one month of use.
  3. My hair started to feel “thicker and healthier” after about 6 weeks of use. (yes, even on my legs).
  4. Small hairs started to grow in thinning areas after 3 months (I anticipate that this will continue with consisten use of the product).

I have been really please with my results, and frankly, pretty surprised. I was hoping to see at least some decrease in hair loss, but was not really anticipating thicker and fuller hair. I love it! I have noticed that my hair has gotten quite long in the past 3 months (it grew over 1.5 inches!!), and my hair usually grows really slowly. The one negative? effect I have noticed is that my hair does seem oilier than normal. This is only a problem if I skip a day washing my hair, which happens more than I would like to admit! I have recommend this product to several family members who have thinning hair as well. I think this product is great, and the results where just as advertised. Now I just wish I could try this product out for the full 6 months to see full results!!!! I received a 3 month supply of Viviscal in order to facilitate this review. All opinions expressed are my own. No other compensation was provided. For more information on the product mentioned visit:

Johnson’s Natural Baby Care

johnsons naturalLiving more naturally is something that so many of us, myself included, are trying to do. I have to confess that before I had children, I wasn’t really concerned about what I put into my body or onto my body. Motherhood changed that.  In so many ways.  Where before I loved the smell of chlorine  bleach throughout my house, I suddenly felt ill at the thought of those fumes being breathed in by anyone in our family.  Over time, I changed to cloth diapers- full time…even had all 3 kids using cloth in one way or another at one time.  I made my own laundry soap.  I make my own cleaners.  We started recycling.  No more individually wrapped packages for us- I got some quality food containers and cute snack bags…reusable water bottles were the only thing I’d let into the house.   Compost?  Yes, please.  Rain barrels?  Let’s see how much rain water we can collect!  I am far from 100% natural, in fact, I stopped making my laundry soap (it didn’t work with our cloth diapers and the water in our well) but am hoping to start again now that we’re done with diapers.

One thing that’s always been kind of out-of-reach for us is natural and organic skin care products.  I would love to use all natural, all organic things across the board but it isn’t financially possible.  So I’m always glad to see when mainstream companies respond to the masses and start changing for the good.

Johnson’s Natural Baby Shampoo, Baby Lotion, and Head to Toe Foaming Baby Wash are a more natural version of a brand that’s been around for so long it’s definitely a household name, and one that many parents rely upon.  I was so happy when I heard that Johnson’s was working to include more natural elements in their product line, because we, as a family, strive to live a more natural lifestyle as a whole.  Natural and organic products are wonderful but are often cost-prohibitive to many families, including my own at times, and it isn’t an easy choice for parents (or anyone, for that matter) to have to weigh the cost before the benefits.  I love this line because it’s natural, gentle to my kids’ sensitive skin, smells wonderful, and AFFORDABLE!!

Johnson’s is a household name that has so many years of quality behind them, and they offer us a more affordable line for more natural ingredients.  I am glad that they are recognizing the need for more natural inclusion and I hope they will continue to rework their formulas in the same manner.

Johnson’s Natural line recently won the 2012 Better Homes and Gardens Best New Product Award! [click to continue…]

Homemade Laundry Soap

I am going to preface this by saying that not only have I made my own soap, I loved it. I stopped for the past 2 years but am going to go back to it. I love it.  I love the homemade laundry soap powder anyway- the liquid was way too messy for this mama!!

how to make your own laundry soap

Have you ever wondered how to make your own laundry soap? Well thanks to reader Rachel, here is a recipe she shared with fans! Let us know if you try the recipe or have one of your own!

  • 1 bar of Fels-Naptha Soap
  • 4 cups of hot water
  • 1/2 cup of Borax
  • 1 cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (It has to be the Super Washing Soda, baking soda or just Arm & Hammer will NOT work!)
  • 5 Gallon Bucket
  • Empty laundry containers or any kind of pour container

  1. Grate your bar of soap into a sauce pan with the 4 cups of hot water.
  2. Stir continually on low-medium heat until all the little flakes of soap melt.
  3. Fill your 5 Gallon bucket halfway full of hot water and pour in the borax, the arm & hammer, and the melted soap mixture and stir until all the ingredients are completely melted. Then fill the remainder of the bucket full with hot water.
  4. Stir the mixture once more, just to ensure everything is mixed well. Then you need to cover the bucket (if you have the lid to the bucket, let it have a little bit of breathing room, because it will expand since it’s full of hot water) and let it sit overnight to gel, it will gel HARD. Then take your dispenser (old tide container for me) and fill half with your laundry soap (I have to use a funnel) and half full of water and shake well each time you use. Will be very liquid-y but works great!

This recipe makes 10 gallons of laundry detergent so if you want to make less simply reduce the ingredients by half, etc.

My True Nature Review and #Giveaway

With a new baby in the house and 2 older kids, we give a lot of baths!  I try to stick to all natural products as often as possible.  When I learned that the children’s bath products by My True Nature included 72% organic ingredients, I was eager to give them a try. Another thing I like about My True Nature is that  you can share the Tubby Town stories with your kids- Kids love the stories and sweet characters and it makes bath time so much more fun!

I tried out the kids gift bag which includes:  Stinky By Nature 2 in 1 Baby Shampoo and Body Wash (8oz).  Bubbly By Nature Baby Bubble Bath (12 oz.), an organic cotton wash cloth, scrub toy and a reusable lunch bag.  [click to continue…]

Saving money on organic products

organic shampooWith all of the chemicals and additives that are in abundance in everything, seemingly everywhere we turn, it can get overwhelming to try to find products that perform well, are effective in use, and are also safe to use.  There are sites out there to help us navigate, but I’ve found these are murky waters to wade through and often get frustrated.  More frustrating, though, isn’t necessarily the ingredients- but the cost.  I would 100% love for my family to be on

When I shop, I do try to find organic shampoo, conditioner, skincare products- I figure if it’s organic it won’t have harmful additives (like formaldehyde! GROSS!) and pesticides used on the ingredients used in the formula.    I’ll admit I’m a lot better about getting the safest products for my kids than for myself.  We have a budget, though, so I can’t do both most of the time. is a price comparison site for organic products. Sites like this can help us  live healthy and use organic products without spending too much.  I get so discouraged that more times than not, we have to choose based on our wallets with organic products and that just shouldn’t be how things are!  Wouldn’t it be great to just find a product we like– and buy it- or even better, not have products made with harmful ingredients?   [click to continue…]

Sibu All Natural Skin Care Products #giveaway #rafflecopter

Whenever possible, I prefer to opt for natural products, especially when it is something that goes onto my skin, both for my kids and for myself.  Truth be told, I’m far better about getting products for my kids that are natural than myself, but I’m working on that. Sibu Beauty offers a line of natural skin care products that are affordable to the masses that also work effectively and treat your skin gently.  Plus, they smell really nice.  Bonus for me!!

Each Sibu Beauty product is packed with the maximum levels of Omega 7 and the 190 other bio-active nutrients from the sea buckthorn berry to revitalize, renew, and replenish.  They offer a range of products from ingested supplements to night creams and many in between- at prices that I was very (pleasantly) surprised were not that high.

The thing with the line from Sibu beauty isn’t just in the quality of the products- the bar cleanser I have, it works well, lathers nicely and rinses easily- the lotions and creams are thick enough to feel like the recommended amount can actually cover the intended areas, but not so thick you feel like you are slathering yourself with products.  Overall I’m really pleased with these products.  I will for sure be buying the bar cleanser again- I love how it exfoliates (gently) while it cleans.  Makes me giddy!  The “thing” about the Sibu line is the sea buckthorn berry:

Premium, wildcrafted sea buckthorn from the Tibetan Himalayas

For healthy and beautiful hair, skin and nails
High in the Tibetan Himalayas (12,000 feet above sea level) grows a tiny but resilient fruit that resists the harsh weather conditions and high altitudes. The sea buckthorn berry fortifies itself against the elements by producing an array of powerful nutrients. With over 190 bioactive compounds, sea buckthorn is an unsurpassed source of Omegas 3, 6, and 9. And it’s a rich source of the elusive essential fatty acid, Omega-7, an essential fatty acid vital to collagen production and healthy skin, hair and nails.

1300 years of beauty
Sea buckthorn is a natural product with 1300 years of traditional uses with the modern scientific research to back it up. Our superior processing techniques and our premium and exclusive source of sea buckthorn allow us to create a revolutionary group of beauty products.

Jack Lalanne Power Juicer Express Review and Giveaway

I recently received a Jack Lalanne Power Juicer Express in white to review.   I have been wanting a juicer for a long time.  Fresh juice tastes better and has more vitamins and nutrients than bottled juice.  I also recently watched the movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, which chronicles the journey of two men to heal their bodies through juicing.    My 6 year old son was so excited to get using the juicer.  It is a great way to get kids to drink fresh juice and you can even sneak in some leafy green vegetables without them noticing.   We made an apple and carrot juice that was so good and fresh tasting!  The juicer comes with an operating manual and a book of juice recipes to get you started.  It was easy to clean up and the pulp can be used for recipes or added to your compost.    The juicer is compact and easy to store or leave on the counter.

Designed for those who have limited space in the kitchen. No need to precut ingredients due to it’s size. This juicer accommodates most fruits and vegetables whole to produce a fresh glass of juice in just seconds. A sleek and compact version of the original with the new non-drip spout feature and the same best selling extraction technology. [click to continue…]

ScentSicles Scented Ornaments

I grew up with fresh cut Christmas trees purchased locally to support the local volunteer fire department. My mom had 2 kinds of trees that were her preference, and we had cathedral ceilings in our house. We had some monstrous trees over the years. Part of Christmas, to me, is the smell of a fresh cut tree, and there’s not much that has been able to evoke that memory for me- when my mom died, we “inherited” the artificial tree she’d begrudgingly switched to for ease a few years prior- with little kids we decided it would be a good idea…safer…simpler…

I love the tree, it’s gorgeous, a really nice tree, and I love that it was my moms. But I also kind of hate it. There’s no scent. Nothing. I think that’s what I hate. The nothingness of aroma. I am not a pine scented fan but oh, I love the smell of Christmas, of the tree fragrance wafting through the house, mixing just the smallest bit with aroma of baking cookies in the oven…those scents, they bring me right back to our house on East Hill Road…

ScentSicles seems to understand that for people like me, who don’t have a “real” tree for whatever reason, may still want to enjoy the scents of the holiday season. I wasn’t sure what I’d think when I got my ScentSicles package, but as I opened the box (not the packaging- just the BOX!) I could smell the pine and smiled- I think for the first time this year, with our fake tree, I won’t miss the fragrance quite so much. These fragrance infused sticks smell so very much like a fresh cut pine tree!! [click to continue…]
