The Perplexus Review – Holiday Gift Guide

Have you seen the new Perplexus maze game from PlaSmart?  I have a feeling that this going to be BIG this holiday season.  This fun toy requires critical thinking, fine motor skills and NO batteries!  Great for kids ages 6 and up.  I was SO excited with the folks at Plasmart agreed to send me the original Perplexus.  My kids were immediately intruiged when they saw this colorful orb.  In fact, I had to set up a timer and organize a line so that all 3 of my kids got equal time playing.  They had a blast with this thing!  There is a small metal ball that must be maneuvered through the maze in the ball.  You are guided by small numbers on the track.  The concept is easy, the game is challenging!  I love that you can play this game as a single player or make it into a multi player game.

Here are the details:

PERPLEXUS is a maze game where players maneuver a small marble around challenging barriers inside a transparent sphere. Unlike traditional flat-surface mazes that are composed of one path, PERPLEXUS houses various challenging tracks with 100 barriers providing a frustrating three-dimensional experience. Players select the track they would like to attempt and must work with gravity to carefully shift, flip, and twist the sphere to guide the marble. Players can race each other or the clock.

There are many fun ways to play PERPLEXUS. It works as both a single player game and as a multi-player competitive game.

HOW TO PLAY… the basics

  • Roll the ball to one of the starting points, numbered 1 2 or 3 (we suggest starting with #1) If you can´t find them…. put PERPLEXUS down and slowly back away!
  • Flip, twist and spin PERPLEXUS to move the ball along the numbered path. When you fall off the track…. cuz it´s gonna happen…. just start over!!!
  • If you make it to the end, pat yourself on the back… then go get the next PERPLEXUS challenge!

The Perplexus is at the top of my list for holiday gift ideas.  No assembly is required, the game is nice and QUIET, reasonably priced and provides endless entertainment for anyone over the age of 6.  In fact, I am thinking of getting one for my elderly grandparents!  Perplexus offers the maze in the following styles:  Original, Rookie, Epic and Twist.  Get one this holiday season and your entire family will be hooked!

Follow Perplexus on Facebook for the latest information and updates.  Perplexus Original retails for $18.89.  You can find a local vendor here.

“A sample of this product was provided to facilitate my review.  All opinions expressed are my own.” Learning Games for (Little) Kids

We are in the age of electronics and technology.  Love it or hate it, it’s part of our lives.  We can embrace it, moderate it, or try to keep it at bay, but the chances are, living in this era, our kids will be “hooked up” to something, at some point.  My feeling is, as with almost anything, moderation is ok.  I don’t mind my kids watching television- in moderation.  Same with sweets.  Now that they are getting older, we’re also allowing them to use the computer, in moderation. This is where sites like come in. is  an early childhood educational website targeting children 3-5 years of age.

This website is fully interactive and includes fun and educational games, stories, videos, worksheets, and arts and crafts projects- all  developed by child experts and educators.  These activities help children in building the skills necessary to succeed in school. Not only are they helping develop skills, but they are fun, engaging and age-appropriate activities grouped by both activity type, subject matter and age level.  Directions are clear and simple, and very visual, which is great for pre-and early readers.

We’ve spent a lot of time (perhaps too much time) playing “Hook the Fish” which is just how it sounds- a game for fishing- you need to direct the cursor using your mouse or arrow keys, and when you lose a worm, replace it- there is also a basket to put your catches into. Both my 6 and 4 year old love this game.  They love fishing, so they’ve been asking over and over, mom can we fish on your computer? I don’t mind- its giving them basic computer skills and they are enjoying something together, and they do it while I’m making dinner so I can interact with them and help if they get stuck.

We’ve also had a lot of fun with the worksheets.  This may be my kids but we love worksheets and workbooks in this family.  Well, except my husband. But I’ve always loved them, and the kids do too.  The little kids love having “homework” to do while big sister is doing her own work for school!  They like to “shop” for new worksheets.

worksheets, printable worksheets, free printable worksheets is a great, free website that is one we’ll definitely keep bookmarked for the kids for a very long time.  Quality, educational and interactive games and activities that are age appropriate.

Froggy Feeding Fun Game from Learning Resources #Giveaway

froggy feeding funI have another “guest” review from my son’s preschool teacher.  Mrs. O is a certified special education teacher who is the head teacher in the Peer Model Preschool Program at our local elementary school.  She’s been doing some reviews of Learning Resources‘ learning games and sensory products for me and has just sent me some feedback on Froggy Feeding Fun!

This is a wonderful game. I can incorporate so many different math concepts such as color identification, counting, 1:1 correspondence, the concepts more than and less than… Students really enjoy the frogs and find them motivating. Not only do students benefit from learning math concepts when playing this game but they also work on strengthening their hand muscles each time they squeeze a frog to catch a fly. This really helps support appropriate finger grasp on writing tools. As a special education teacher in preschool I also incorporate crossing midline and concepts such as in front of, behind, left, right, etc when playing Froggy Feeding Fun.

I love Learning Resources because they truly offer educational games and toys that offer different ways for kids to learn in fun ways.  I have found their quality of materials to be nothing but excellent and will continue to support this brand because of their dedication to kids’ educations.

Look out, flies! Squeeze open Froggy’s mouth and grab flies to strengthen fine motor muscles. Also develops number sense, counting and color recognition.

  • Roll a cube to determine which flies to munch—practice number and color matching skills too
  • Includes 2 durable rubber frogs, 60 flies, 1 number cube, 1 color cube and Activity Guide
  • Frogs measure 2.5” in diameter

One reader will win Froggy Feeding Fun for their house!

Bananagrams® Games Review and Prize Pack #Giveaway

Bananagrams gamesI LOVE word games.  L-O-V-E them.  I’m so excited that my oldest is wanting to play them with me.  She’s tried Words with Friends a few times- she does pretty well, in my (completely biased) opinion!!  My mom had given us Bananagrams®a few years ago, and we’ve played variations on that game ever since.  Since that time, Banangrams has extended their family of games and sent us each of them for review, including Bananagrams, Appletters®, PAIRSinPEARS®, ZIP- IT® and Fruitominoes®.  [click to continue…]

TABOO Review and Flash #Giveaway

tabooTABOO has always been a favorite game of mine.  I love it!  It’s good, clean fun, and you can get seriously silly.

TABOO is recommended for adults, but I think many kids from 8+ can play- you may have to skip a few words, but overall I think they can do it.  You have to think fast and think creatively when you aren’t able to rhyme or gesture to get someone to guess your words!  This is definitely a must-have game if you are a game night lover like me, and with over 1000 words you are sure to have many hours of fun (especially now with the Uh-Oh! Buzzer- which I won’t lie, makes me jump every.single.time!!)  Games like this are great to bring on family trips, too, or to family gatherings!

Jungle Speed game Giveaway

Jungle Speed is the lightning-fast game of quick thinking and quicker reflexes. It can be played with 2 to 10 players and is labeled for 8 years and up but my 7 year old was quick to understand the rules and loves playing. We have played several rounds of this game.  It is really fun.  And the games comes with a great fabric storage case that makes this easy to store and take on vacations.  Jungle Speed will go with us on all our family trips.

Your keen eye and swift hand will win the day, if you can stop laughing long enough to catch your breath.

Jungle Speed seems simple enough, and everyone can be playing minutes after you deal out the cards. But once you start playing, the chaotic action will take all your concentration. Fifteen minutes later, the game will be over and you can all pause for air – but that just leaves you time to play again! [click to continue…]
