Down and Dirty Tips to Bathe Your Dog at Home

This post brought to you by Sterling. The content and opinions expressed below are that of this mama loves.

As nice as it would be to send your dog to the groomers every week, not everyone has the budget for that. As a matter of fact, the average dog owner only sends their dog to the groomer every 4 to 6 weeks. To groom your small dog, it can cost anywhere from $30-$50, a medium breed will run $50-$70 and a large dog will set you back $70-$90. With sky high costs like that, most of us will wait until the dog gets really dirty or have hair mats we cannot handle. If we only knew how to handle bathing your dog at home, right? Well, with these tricks, you will be grooming your own dog and pocketing all that money the groomer was getting out of you!
Down and Dirty Tips for Bathing Your Dog At Home

Make sure you choose the right shampoo before you start. Do not use your own shampoo as it has different pH levels that are not good for your dog. Instead, ask your vet or the folks at the pet store what they recommend. Also remember to get a bath tool to help get through those mats or clumps of hair.

My daughter hates to get water in her ears, so she wears ear plugs when she is swimming as well as in the shower. Dogs are not big fans of getting water in their ears either, so place a small amount of cotton in your pup’s ear before you get the water running. Brushing your dog before you shampoo them help distribute the shampoo more evenly and makes it easier to get them nice and clean.

Make sure you have plenty of towels when you are bathing your dog. You will want 2-3 towels to keep yourself from getting soaked and the dog nice and dry. Dogs need to have traction when they are getting a bath, so use a towel in the tub or a non-skid bath mat. Use one towel as a “cape” to keep them from shaking their water all over you. The other towel is the drying towel to get them dry after the asking occurs.

Dogs actually do not like the sound of running water, so full the tub before you put them in. Be sure to have nice warm water for them as they hate their water too cold or too hot.

So, nowundefined you have all the tips, tools and tricks you need to get your pooch nice and clean. What are we missing here? How about your comfort when you are bathing your dog? There is nothing worse when you are bathing your dog in the tub than to lean over and get that shower track in the ribs. OUCH! Well, with the new Sterling Prevail shower door with its ComforTrack technology, you and your rib cage can bathe your dog in comfort. The flexible bottom track supports the shower door’s glide, making for an easier and safer day-to-day use for you and your family. The Sterling shower doors with ComforTrack technology  is just what you need for shower!
The ComforTrack’s cushioned threshold bends when pressure is appliedergo allowing you to kneel, sit, or lean on the track. This makes it so much easier to bathe your child or a pet, access your shower, or clean the bathing/showering space. My kids are into sports, which means they can get pretty sweaty and grubby. This equates to lots of baths and showers. I need to know the shower track is not only flexible, but durable as well. The heavy duty material of the ComforTrack has been put through rigorous testing, so you know it will outlast the day-to-day wear and tear my family can put it through. What’s more, the track features a low profile and sleek shape that is easy to keep clean. This innovation is truly a win-win for today’s homeowner!  Share your dog bathing tips in the comments!

4 Tips to Keep Your Pet Happy and Nourished

Like with many of the millions of pet owners worldwide, I want my pet to be as happy and well fed as possible. This can be a tricky balance, especially if you have finicky cats who live most of their life indoors. Just like people, cats can go a little stir crazy if you keep them inside, so you need to entertain them as you would your own child (well, so to speak.) Here are just 4 ways to keep your pet happy:

4 Tips to Keep Your Pet Happy and Nourished

1. Go For a Walk:

If you have indoor cats like I do, you cannot exactly take them outside for a walk, right? Well, not necessarily. There are leashes for cats and you can walk them in safe areas near your home. If this does not appeal to you, a screened in porch or sun room will give them a sense of being outdoors while being safe inside. Our cat… well, Rosie isn’t one of the kitties who will walk on a leash. We have several in town who will- some of them even come to watch soccer and baseball games their humans are playing!

2. Play with Them:

Cats love to play, so find some cat toys and get on the floor and have some fun with your feline friend. You can even make your own cat toys out of common household items like string and a cardboard toilet paper roll.

cat playing

3. Let Them Climb:

You do not want your cat climbing on your furniture, so get them something they can climb and scratch on. A cat climbing tree or pet condo is an excellent investment in your cat’s happiness.

4. Feed Them Well:

Feeding your cat well does not mean feeding them a lot. You need to find the right food that will give them the nourishment they need. My Rosabeth (Rosie) loves the Nutrish Zero Grain pet food from Rachael Ray.

I love to watch the Rachael Ray show with my second cup of morning coffee. She has the best recipes and guests and I love her heart as well. She loves animals and her line of pet foods shows just that. Rachael created the Nutrish line in 2007 with the help of pet nutrition experts. She started with her ultra-premium food and treats for dogs and last year the line expanded to cat food.

nutrish in bowl

The Nutrish line has exactly what you would want for your pet; simple natural ingredients with no meat or poultry, by-product meal or fillers and no artificial preservatives, colors or flavors. Real meat is the #1 ingredient in the Nutrish cat food and all recipes were inspired by Rachael’s kitchen. My cat took to the Zero Grain Whitefish Dry Cat Food very well. I think she knew it was good for her! I just slowly mixed it with her previous food over a ten day period, when she was eating the Nutrish 100%.

With the Zero Grain Whitefish & Potato Recipe, real whitefish is the #1 ingredient, is a tasty and highly digestible protein that promotes strong muscles and helps minimize litter box odors. Another great reason to buy the Nutrish brand is because Rachael’s personal proceeds go to Rachael’s Rescue, which was created to help shelter pets. So far, over $9 million has gone toward food, medical supplies and treatments for animals in need. You can find the Nutrish foods and treats at your local grocery store, as well as mass retailers like Target, Walmart and Amazon. Be sure to stay connected with Nutrish and follow them on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Getting rid of pet hair #NeatoVacuumBestForPets #Giveaway

The word chaos does not even begin to describe my home at times. Especially in the winter, when we are all confined to the indoors for a large majority of our time. Don’t get me wrong, I love every minute of it…. But I also often find myself dreaming of cloning myself. Just one extra me would go along ways in helping me to maintain my sanity.

I find myself running behind the kids and their various friends throughout the day reminding them to clean up after themselves in an effort to keep the house tidy. Then, as much as my children are running around leaving things behind, my pets seem to jump right in and pick up where the children left off! Those are a bit harder to chastise for not being neat and tidy. Especially when the problem is shedding, something they can’t easily control.Getting rid of pet hair is one of my biggest challenges!

Then… there was a Neato Robot Vacuum.

The Neato Robot Vacuum is seriously the “Best for Pets“. Not just because I said it, (although come on, you guys!) but because they’ve also won numerous awards titling them as just that! Not only does the Neato keep floors neat and tidy… it’s hands free and effortless! No more daily floor cleaning with standard vacuums or sweeping with brooms… the Neato handles that for you.

How does it work?

You pick the time and date and schedule when you’d like the Neato to clean, or use the one button start. When it’s time, it moves around your house picking up debris. The Neato actually learns your house! It uses laser mapping and laser guided navigation to do this. It also includes boundary markers/sensors to protect pet bowls, stairs, and your important valuables.

The wide suction area and edge cleaning brushes can be used for through clean. The stealthy vacuum can also easily maneuver under furniture, around corners, and the square edge gets in corners and hard to reach spots!

This vacuum literally saves hours a month! It’s the next best thing to having a full time maid! And guess what happens when it’s done cleaning? The Neato Robot Vacuum just returns itself right to it’s base to recharge! How “neat” is that (see what I did there?).

What room could you use a Neato in?

Roasted Cheddar Potato Chips Recipe for Dogs

Roasted potatoes and cheddar make a great snack for dogs, they’re tasty and a healthy alternative to most dog treats. These doggy potato chips are quick and easy to make, even kids can help.

½ cup cheddar cheese, shredded

Mandolin Slicer, with waves if possible

parchment paper

Roast potatoes in the oven for 20 minutes. Pull the tray out and sprinkle cheese over potato chips. Return tray to oven for an additional 5 minutes to allow cheese to melt.

Lightweight Cat Litter Makes me Happy #FreshStepCats

This post brought to you by Fresh Step Lightweight Extreme Litter. The content and opinions expressed below are that of this mama loves.

Remember I was complaining sharing about how I’m not a fan of cat litter last week? I mean, I understand the purpose. And I embrace that it’s a necessary part of having a cat in the family. Or cats, as the case may be.  But the packaging of litter and by the makeup of it- it’s all bulky and heavy and hard to purchase, transport and bring into the house. Never mind the scooping and changing of the litter!

I found the new Fresh Step® Extreme Lightweight Litter available at Target– right on an endcap, on display AND on sale! Plus I scored big and found a coupon on my package to save an extra $1.50.  Not too shabby for my tabby! (Get it? Get it?)

The new Fresh Step® Fast Lightweight Extreme cat litter is 30% lighter. LIGHTER.  That means getting it off the shelf, paid for, into the car and into the house is easier, and less of a struggle for me. Now I can have strong odor control and NOT struggle with the heavy, bulky container. (Truthfully, the container is still bulky, but it’s a LOT lighter and I can deal with some bulk.  How sleek can we expect cat litter packaging to become, really!?)

I wish I could tell you that Rosie and Lloyd are both loving the new lightweight cat litter as much as I am. Rosie’s been happy to use the new litter, even in the upstairs box, which she normally hates to use. Sadly, Lloyd got outside about a week ago and hasn’t been seen since.  We’re still looking and have friends and family, and neighbors looking, but we’re starting to lose hope that he’s still alive.  We have a lot of coyotes in our area. We’re still looking, but it’s starting to look like we’re a one cat family again.

Rosie, understandably, is out of sorts, as Lloyd has been with her every day of her life- they were littermates… and we adopted them together. I was really concerned about Rosie with this litter because she’s a little finicky about things and really only likes to use the litter box in the basement and makes it known if there’s a change in the box.  Thankfully, she’s taken to this one (yay! I save my back, she saves me changing two boxes daily) and has been using the upstairs box more frequently with this lighter weight formula.

Have you tried lightweight litter? How did you like it? More importantly- how did your cats like it?

Healthy Dog Foods for Happy Pets #GetHealthyHappy #HealthyWeight

When I describe my family to you, I’ll tell you I have a husband, three children, two cats and a dog. Depending how loud they are that day, I might even mention our 7 hens and rooster. We love our pets. They are definitively part of our family. So much so that our pets even take part in exchanging gifts on holidays and birthdays. Laugh if you want, but I blame my mother for it… our dogs growing up ALWAYS had treats on Christmas morning, always put something under the tree for each of us humans, and got us a little surprise for our birthdays. I’ve kept that tradition up (although the chickens haven’t done gifts yet, I think maybe that might be a little bit much, plus, well, they are chickens).  In any case, we love our pets. They live in our house and are living, breathing parts of our family. We feed them and take care of them, and we love them.

We want our families to be happy and healthy. It’s what anyone wants, for their family, right? So for us, having healthy pets is a way to have happy pets. We want our furriest family members to live long, healthy lives so they can be with us as long as possible. Keeping our pets happy and healthy isn’t really that hard to do.  Our dogs already love us unconditionally, and our cats- well, they do too, but sometimes that love is hidden…. Keeping them healthy doesn’t take a lot.  Exercise, play time, checkups, love and healthy dog food. That’s what our pets need to be healthy…and thus, happy. Did you know that because of the way dogs age, missing one annual checkup is like missing 5 years of checkups?  A lot can happen to a body in 5 years time.

tobey at 13

Feeding your dog or cat the right amount of a good, quality food can help to prevent obesity- one example- Hill’s® Science Diet® Adult Healthy Mobility™ is what we’ve considered of late for our Tobey. He’s 13 1/2 now and while he’s quite active and pretty healthy for his age (Go, Tobey!), he is getting older and his dietary needs have changed, so we want to make sure we’re offering him foods that meet his nutritional needs and also don’t offer too many extra calories. Healthy is happy, remember.

You can see that he’s 13 1/2, but you’d never know it looking at our happy boy!

To help pet parents with this new way of thinking about their pets’ health, Hill’s is introducing a new program, ‘Healthier Pets. Happier Lives.’ which gives pet parents the resources they need to #GetHealthyHappy. Help your pet find their healthy place. Go to and enter to win a $100 gift card toward your pet’s next vet checkup. Hill’s Science Diet will be giving away one every day for 90 days!

Is my pet fat? #perfectweight #sciencediet

Having pets is one of the most rewarding experiences we can have as humans. It’s also a great responsibility. Keeping our pets healthy is part of that responsibility. I’ve had overweight pets in my lifetime.  When I met my husband, his cat, Raistlin, was quite overweight, and on kitty diet food.  She did lose four pounds over a long time, but it was a really tough process and not fun for any of us.  (Especially when our friends, Karly and Ally, would sneak her extra food because she looked hungry all the time… love them both, but it didn’t help!)

And there’s our old boy Tobey, who, quite frankly, is a little overweight but not a lot.  He has two fatty deposits on his trunk that make him look a lot bigger than he is.  He’s such a sweet boy, we want him to be with us for a long time!

According to a recent survey by the Association for Pet Obesity and Prevention, only 11% of parents of overweight
pets realize their pets are overweight.

Only 11% of us realize this? That’s not a good number. Just like people, the more weight our furrier family members carry, the more at risk they are for disease, illness and injury. Their lives are shorter than ours already! I will tell you, with some pets, it isn’t always easy to know if they are overweight from sight alone.

This video featuring Dr. Ashley Gallagher gives some great pointers including, of course, taking your pet to the
veterinarian. But what if you want to know if that visit is necessary? Well, try standing above your dog or cat
while looking down. If you can’t see your pet’s ribs or feel them while placing your hands on the side of their
chest, they are probably overweight. Sometimes it can be  tough to know if your pet is overweight but watching helpful videos like this can help you to  assess a pet’s situation. Check out this pet weight score tool to see if your pet may be overweight!

Hill’s® Science Diet® Perfect Weight offers a breakthrough blend of natural ingredients that helps pets burn calories
no matter how active they are. It’s like feeding your pet a workout, ensuring weight loss success within 10 weeks. If you remember, we shared the story of Thundercleese in June, and his dog weight loss story.  Dog weight loss IS possible.  Cat weight loss is possible too.

Thundercleese’s dog weight loss success story is thanks to the 10 week turnaround.  His family committed to using Hill’s Perfect Weight Food and watched the results happen through the challenge.  Here are a few other pet parent’s thoughts on the 10 Week Turnaround:

Ethel lost 11% of her weight in just 10 weeks.

“Knowing the reputation of Hill’s Pet Nutrition, I felt good feeding it to her. I was very pleased for Ethel to
be chosen for the program and am quite happy with her results.” – Shawn Teets, Indianapolis, IN

Joey lost 8.2% of his weight in just 10 weeks.

“He has much more energy than he used to. Perfect Weight keeps him full longer. I have also noticed the
biggest change around his hip area. He looks like an actual dog shape.” – Katie Olson, Fennimore, WI

So I ask you- is my pet fat? Is YOUR pet fat? What are you going to do to find out, and then what are you going to do in order to rectify the situation?

Is dog weight loss possible? #perfectweight #sciencediet

Dealing with being overweight is hard for an adult. We have to be motivated to change. Consciously change our eating habits. What happens, however, when the person overweight is of a different breed. Did you know the negative health effects that excessive weight cause for humans, affect our four-legged friends as well? This was the reality Dereck Voorhies of Virginia faced, with his pet dog Thundercleese.  The Voorhies family adopted Thundercleese, a terrier, at four months of age, from a shelter. They were expecting their first child, and wanted their chocolate lab to have a companion during the transition! They found out a week later that Thundercleese had parvo. Rather than giving him back to the shelter the Voorhies paid expensive fees to treat their new family member and nursed him back to health.

5 & ½ years later, they were faced with another health issue as they learned from their vet that Thudercleese is carrying around an extra 6-9 lbs of fat. While this may not seem like much to a human, for a dog; this extra weight can lead to serious health issues. Dereck reports that in the last year Thundercleese has had lower energy and more difficulty walking due to carrying the extra weight around.  Dereck immediately changed Thundercleese food to some common weight loss pet foods. While they were successful in scaling down his weigh, Thundercleese still seemed hungry (and a bit grouchy) after eating the food.

Luckily, the Voorhies family wasn’t discouraged. They pressed on, and decided to try the 10 Week Turnaround from Hills Pet using “Perfect Weight” pet food. After 10 weeks of the program, Dereck reports that Thundercleese is leaner, and more active and energetic on his walks! In 10 weeks, Thundercleese lost a whooping total of 10 pounds! They look forward to many more years enjoying Thundercleese’s company and companionship.

Join the 10-Week Turnaround Sweepstakes! This provides pet parents the chance to WIN great prizes such as gift cards awarded weekly, and the Grand Prize of a year’s worth of FREE FOOD!

Now, our Tobey isn’t very overweight.  He was getting bigger, but as he’s gotten older his appetite has decreased and he’s lost some of what he’d gained. That, and we make smart choices about his food and treats that we offer to him each day.  We’re happy to report that Tobey’s quite happy to nosh on the Hills foods and we’re hoping that by making good choices for him we will have him with us for several more years to come. 5 Essentials for Pets #PSP4Pets

Like children, pets come with equipment. They don’t REALLY come with equipment… because that would be way to easy. They do, however, require certain things to maintain their comfort AND your sanity! Cats and Dogs differ in their needs of course, but there are 5 essentials for pets that remain consistent! June 1-7 is Pet Appreciation Week – a week to celebrate all the things we love about our pets as we shower them with extra love and affection.  Seems like a good time to share some things that our furrier family members need.

 5 Essentials for Pets

Lloyd is still a kitten.  He still needs kitten food- until he’s a year old.

This seems like a simple no brainer, but it is undoubtedly the most important part of owning a pet.  Many people figure you just grab a can of dog or cat food from the local pet store and call it a day, but that is not the case. Food is so important because you MUST choose the food that matches your pets needs, age, and health requirements. If you aren’t sure, it’s a good idea to check with your vet for suggestions.

natures sleep tobey

So you share your home with the pet, and it becomes theirs too. Pets also need, however, a home INSIDE your home! Whether it be a special pillow, and elaborate doggie bed, or a kennel compliment with a blanket all of their own; create a space for your pet to rest and relax that’s all their own.

Like children, pets can be mischievous. Providing your pet with toys will give them distraction and help keep the curiosity brought about by boredom at bay! If you don’t provide toys for your pets, it’s likely they will find their own amongst your personal belongings! If you value that new pair of shoes you received, buy them a toy!

tobey dog treat container

Training pets can seem difficult at first, but it is similar to training children. Positive reinforcement goes along way. Keep treats handy to reward your pet when they’ve done a great job, and you will soon notice they will be soaking up your praise!

ID Collar

This is a MUST. All pets in your home (with the exception of caged animals, of course) should have an ID collar with your address and details. Their collar should also include their name, and vaccination details. If your pet is ever lost, this will allow the finder to return them to you (or your local vet) quickly and easily. Be sure to keep these updated when you move.

One place we go to for our pet essentials is Pet Supplies Plus. They have stores located in neighborhoods across the country, with each location big enough to carry everything your pet needs, but small enough to feel like home. The Pet Supplies Plus in-store team is dedicated to helping you find the right products for your pet — and will likely also remember your pet’s face and name after a few visits! (They totally do, and love Tobey. We haven’t attempted a field trip with the kittens, and probably won’t anytime soon).

Believing that every pet deserves a safe, healthy and loving home, Pet Supplies Plus partners with local animal rescue organizations, hosts adoption events at select neighborhood locations, and organizes fundraising activities to support local animal shelters and charities. Visit your local store for the latest event information!
