Max Steel brings us Superhero 2.0

I participated in this sponsored campaign viewing party and toy review of Max Steel for One2One Network. All opinions stated are my own.

The idea of superheroes has long fascinated so many of us- in print, television, the big screen- everyday life- the superhero represents the ultimate Good vs. Evil battles we’d all love to win- the hero triumphs over the villains, and the world stays safe from evil again.  We watch the movies, read the comic books, the books, the magazines, we buy the shirts, the shoes, the sweatshirts, hats…and the toys.  I can remember going to see the original Superman movie – it was my first movie theater experience- and I was simply in awe at the big screen, and of course, of Superman himself.  Fast forward about 30 years later…and though he’s never lost his fan base, Superman’s been reincarnated once again, inspiring a whole new generation of kids to want to be just like him.  But it’s not just Superman, it’s all superheroes.  Given all that’s happening in the world around us, you can’t blame a kid for wanting superheroes to be real, to save the world, to protect us from evil plots hatched by sinister villains.

Of course, today’s kids have technology along with the love of Superheroes, so it’s only natural that we’d have some heroes coming along with extra technology.  One of Mattel’s “old school” heroes, MAX STEEL, has come back with a new series airing on Disney XD, a live-action film due out in 2014, and a whole line of fun, cool interactive action figures and toys released in September, 2013.

Max Steel is the newest and coolest superhero from Mattel. He’s Maxwell McGrath, a 16 year old kid with a superpower he hasn’t always known about, with a 21st century sidekick, Steel.  Steel isn’t your typical sidekick- Steel is an alien warrior who’s the equivalent of 16 human years- and when he’s not playing practical jokes, he’s paired up with Maxwell McGrath to form the ultimate superhero MAX STEEL (or as I think of him, modern day superhero, Superhero 2.0).  Most of the action figures light up and they have all got a “thing” they do- which is great for kids.

Our favorites? The Max Steel Rip Launch Toxzon Action Figure (there’s a rip cord, and the discs fly through the air.  Also amusing with kittens).  Our other fave? The Max Steel Blade Attack Dredd Action Figure – because his hand spins and spins and it’s fun to do. It’s almost like a helicopter blade- just cool and fun!

Kids can bring their favorite Max Steel adventures to life with the brand new Turbo Sword (MSRP $29.99) for action-packed play. With built-in motion sensors, the sword makes battle sounds, lights up and repeats key phrases from the hit animated series with a few simple moves.  You can find it on Amazon, Target, Walmart and ToysRUs.com
The Turbo sword is full of sounds and lights- 19 sounds in all when Steel is attached.  Lots of fun for kids, but I prefer this one goes outside for play (and stored indoors) because the volume is a bit high for my liking (I will fully admit I’m hypersensitive to toy sounds so it may not be so loud to you!)

The Max Steel toy line also includes action figures (MSRP $5.99) and a Max Steel costume (MSRP $21.99-27.00), perfect for boys this Halloween.  It’s VERY refreshing to find action figures priced at this point.  My son is at the age where action figures and imaginative play take up most of his free time (besides building blocks) and he’s usually found in one costume or another, saving the world and “getting” the bad guys by whatever means necessary.  He loves to get together with his buddies and run around inside, outside, up and downstairs, getting totally engrossed in their play and losing track of time and really BEING in the moment.  They love superheroes.  I can’t blame them- who doesn’t want to save the world?

Teamwork: Max is like any other high school student. But when he teams up with Steel, their combined forces unlock superhero powers that help them conquer their world.  It’s nice to see team work encouraged and NEEDED modeled for kids!

Humor: Just like every bond between best buds, quick-witted Max and trusty sidekick Steel’s banter back and forth is just plain funny.  Steel’s even funnier to us because he’s an alien, and that brings a new level of humor!

Friendship: The bond forged between Max and sidekick Steel is undeniably unbreakable. Together they operate as one inseparable duo showing that the power of two is better than one.  It goes back to teamwork too, but it’s also really a great example of the power of friendship.

We will be having a little viewing party once everyone in my house is healthy and my son’s friends are as well- we’ve had to change the date a few times because of back to school sickies!!

Watch MAX STEEL on Saturday mornings at 8:30/7:30c on Disney XD!

Polly Pocket Zipline Adventure Pool to the rescue!

Disclosure: I participated in a campaign with  Mom Central Consulting for Polly Pocket toys. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

steri strips on chin

It’s summer, it’s hot, my kids want to swim all day long.  We have a pool here at the house and we’re doing 6 weeks of lessons this year.  For my littlest one, this all came to a screeching halt on Wednesday night- she slipped in the shower and split her chin open on the tub.  She’s healing nicely and will have a thin scar under her chin, but we’re ok with that, really just relieved she didn’t do permanent damage to her jaw, teeth or cheeks (she cut the insides of her mouth up a lot as well).  What ISN’T going well is the “no swimming for 5 days” thing.  My little one adores the water.  She wants to be in it and she’s not really understanding that no swimming for 5 days really means NO swimming for 5 days.

Polly Pocket Zipline Adventure Pool has saved the day, my friends.  My little one  may not be able to swim but a fun new toy with tiny dolls and animal friends that also includes can include water? SCORE.   Polly, a puppy and a monkey can all take turns on the zipline, hanging in the hammock, sliding down the slide into the pool…and more.  Water play with dolls in a pool is a little less upsetting than no swimming at all for my girl, and I’m so thankful for this Zipline Adventure Pool set!

Why do we love Polly Pocket toys? They are tiny, they are fun, and several of the sets have little suction cups on the pieces so that  they stay in place.  They are small enough to easily pack for  a trip but big enough that 2-3 kids can play together and not be on top of one another. My kids love having the toys at their level, especially since they don’t seem to be where the cat can get ONTO them and knock them over like she does with everything else in the house.  I like that when we want to move the set or take it down to bring someplace , there won’t be damage to the wall or paint.  Parent friendly, house friendly, and kid friendly for sure! My kids love dramatic play and spend hours creating elaborate stories to act out with one another- often times, the Transformers guys come for lunch at Polly Pockets, and vice versa.  We’re equal opportunity toy players here. :)

Not only are these toys fun and make for great gifts, they are also on SALE right now on Amazon- and you can shop right here, without even leaving this page, to grab them from Amazon!

philanthroparty

What a fun thing to do- throw a party to get people interested in and excited about helping others!  Monster High loved one girl’s philanthropic ways so much they’ve introduced a new ghoul in school- Boo-Lu Cerone!

lulu lemonaid monster high

Boo-Lu Cerone, known to most as Lulu Cerone, is the founder of LemonAID Warriors, a non-profit grass-roots organization that helps kids turn their passions into actions, 14 year old Lulu is helping change the way her generation “parties,” by turning each clawesome celebration into an opportunity to give back through fangtastic Philanthro-parties! Monster High has partnered with Lulu and her LemonAID Warriors creeptastic community to spread the message that when ghouls come together to activate their passions into something positive for others, they are helping to create tween-esteem, acceptance and kindness within themselves.

I love seeing stories like Lulu’s because it is a reminder of the potential of good in EVERYONE, and it warms my heart when kids want to help others.  Lulu’s parents should be- and are rightfully so- very, very proud of their daughter.  Look at what she’s accomplished at 14- and now she’s got her own Monster High character!

The “Ghouls Helping Ghouls™” Skullership:

·      Fans are asked to submit video, essay or photo around how they most represent the spirit of “Ghouls Helping Ghouls,” through Philanthro-parties- submissions could win a $1,000 cash donation to their cause of choice!

Favorite game gift ideas – one size fits all!

g” alt=”apples to apples” width=”500″ height=”500″ />

Apples to Apples– There are so many versions of this game now- but really, it’s fun for everyone and appropriate for anyone. If you have younger ones in your family, get the sets geared towards the younger kids- you’ll all still have fun. I have the set for 7+ for my oldest for Christmas- and we’ve given that as a birthday party gift to four of her friends already. HUGE hit.

scrabble catch phraseScrabble Catch PhraseThis combines my love of electronics with my love of word games. My friend Jackie is hoping she can improve her Words with Friends scores…

Think fast! The SCRABBLE Electronic CATCHPHRASE game challenges you to come up with words and then pass the game fast so you don’t get caught holding the bag! Give your teammates clues so they can guess the word or phrase on the game unit’s screen. But no rhyming, first letters or parts of the word, or the other team gets a point! Once your team has guessed it, pass the unit fast to the other team. When the buzzer goes off, whoever has the unit loses a point to the other side, so move fast! When your team gets to 7 points, you win!

Classic CATCHPHRASE game challenges you to guess words and phrases! Team up and start the timer! Keep track of the score with the game unit. Press the Next button for the next word or phrase. tenzi dice game

TenziA dice game made for up to 4 players- quick moving (and GREAT for playdates) but also fun for adults. My 7 year old ADORES this game and brings it everywhere. It’s small, portable, and really easy to play- and the quick duration makes it perfect for the younger kids.

Cribbage I don’t know how many variations of Cribbage there are. I know that for every person there’s probably at least one design of cribbage board– tucked up in my daughters’ room right now is a wooden dolphin cribbage board my husband made for me years ago – with wooden pegs carved out in the first letter of each of our names for pegs from his dad. (Will add photo as soon as I can)

classic parcheesi

Parcheesi- Classic Edition- I would wager a guess that my mom and I spent at least 500 hours in my childhood at our summer lake house playing Parcheesi. She’d get so mad because I’d get double sixes like nobody’s business! It’s a fun game and I really need to add this to my own family collection- the memories alone warrant that purchase. But it’s a fun game and appropriate for kids ages 8+ . Just looking at the images brings back so many memories for me! We had no electricity on the island so we played board games, card games, and read when it was stormy or cold or at night. That’s it.

pass the pigs

Pass the Pigs– kids think this one is hilarious. It’s also quite easily modified, but how can rolling pigs around not be fun?! My 5 year old loves this game. He thinks its hilarious when the pigs are upside down. This is a GREAT stocking stuffer. We have played this game for gosh, at least 10 years??!! Friends of ours introduced us when we were hanging out at their apartment years ago…since then we’ve married our significant others, had children, moved, and you know what? We still play this- but now the kids join in!

What are YOUR favorite games for families?

Some games received for review. Opinions are my own.

Polly Pocket’s Playtime Pet Shop & Friends Finish First DVD

polly pocket playtime pet shop 2

My kids love animals.  The love to play with them, either our family pets or toys.  They dress them up, play house, school, and whatever else comes into their minds.  They’ve been playing a lot with Polly Pocket’s Playtime Pet Shop for the past few weeks- a cute new playset from the Polly Pocket folks that’s sure to be a hit with any animal loving kid!  This set has a pet carrier, treats, food bowls, toys, leashes, plus activities to do with the animal friends.  You can even give them a bath! (I have to confess I’ve not undone the stitch holding the towel around the bar- the kids haven’t asked me to and I feel like it works quite nicely as is…and we can’t lose it this way!)

One thing that’s always “worked” for Polly Pocket is the size- the dolls, the accessories, the playsets, all are fairly small in size and are easy to store and are portable.  This is important for those of us who have smaller homes, don’t want clutter, or even for folks who travel a lot.  Having toys from home that are familiar can go a long way when traveling, and toys that encourage dramatic play seem to lend themselves to longer periods of play, so these are perfect for on-the-go. Kids love being able to bring toys places- with the Polly Pockets, they can tuck a few toys into their pocket and have something to play with and entertain them during dinner at a restaurant, or at a doctors office.

polly pocket playtime pet shop

I love Polly Pockets, always have. They are just cute and fun.  I feel like Mattel has done a great job keeping the Polly and her friends doing age-appropriate activities and age-appropriate apparel.  I get very frustrated when brands and products directed at the 3-4 and up crowd have more adult-themed or teenage themed activities and clothing.  Sets like the Playtime Pet Shop are great- the dolls are stylish and fun, the animals adorable, and there are multiple ways to interact with the playset through the slide, the checkout, the spinning bins, the swing…although I think the girls’ favorite and my own are the treat dispenser and the little treats.  Its hard for me to get the treats back into their containers because of my big chubby mama hands but the kids have no problem.  Plus, the teeny tiny fish and teeny tiny bones are just adorable.

polly pocket playtime pet shop treat dispenser

I do have to say I almost wish sets like this came with some kind of storage pouch on the back- hidden during play, but a place to store all of the tiny pieces that come with these sets.  It’s hard to keep track of them.  Not a drawback, but it would be a very nice feature.

Having recently checked out the Stick ‘n Play  Polly Pocket set, I have to say I prefer this one…and the kids seem to also. I think the suction cups are nice because it means the dolls will stay in place and stand upright, but it also impedes moving them around which gets frustrating for them.  I think they are a great idea but may need a little tweaking.  The kids don’t seem to mind and have mixed one set with the other and just play Polly Pockets.  They just like the dolls and the animals.

We also received the “Friends Finish First” DVD with Polly and her friends and all three of my kids loved this.  My girls loved seeing their dolls come to life and hearing their voices.  Polly and her friends are in a skating contest and Polly learns how it’s more important to have fun WITH her friends than to win and beat her friends. A cute episode and just 22 minutes long- teaches a nice lesson and isn’t very preachy.  Plus my kids love ice skating, so this was a win-win for me!

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Mattel Polly Pocket. I received a product samples and a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.

Unexpected Parenting News, continued- and I went shopping, of course.

Yesterday I shared with you some new words in my vocabulary: Alopecia Areata.  I did what many of my friends would do- I started poking around online.  Shopping is therapeutic- but this was a different kind of shopping for me. It’s funny- looking around online – Bratz and Moxie Girlz both have dolls out with bald heads.  Moxie Girlz actually sent us one, which I knew immediately would be donated to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center– what a cool gift to be able to give a child losing their hair from a treatment was my first thought.  Now, I think it’s pretty cool that a kid with Alopecia Areata might get to take one of those Girlz home.  I cannot explain to you how great it is that companies are taking steps and being proactive to help raise awareness and give kids toys and playthings that can help them to have a better self esteem- to have dolls that look like them and are still marvelous and awesome in every single way.

Back in February MGA announced that they would be coming out with hairless fashion dolls to support the fight against pediatric cancer. Under the banner “”True Hope,” MGA released three Bratz® dolls – Cloe™, Yasmin™ and Cameron™, and three Moxie Girlz™ dolls, Avery™, Sophina™ and Jaxson™.  Available at Toys“R”Us® stores and toysrus.com ,  MGA will donate $1 for every “True Hope” Bratz® andMoxie Girlz™ doll, sold to distributors, to City of Hope for cancer research.

My blogging friend Jeanne from Inside Out Motherhood shaves her head for St. Baldrick’s each year.  This year, she went pink.  She wears it well.  She’s awesome with and without hair.  Like we all are. Mattel has a Beautiful and Bald Barbie. Barbie.  Well, a beautiful and bald friend of Barbie.

The Beautiful and Bald Barbie is finally becoming a reality. A bustling Facebook campaign urged toymaker Mattel to create a doll that appeals to kids undergoing cancer treatments or suffering diseases such as Alopecia, and after receiving 150,000 “likes” in under four months, Mattel will soon put the bald doll into production. Mattel spokesperson Alan Hilowitz told CBS News’ HealthPop that the doll will be created as “friend” of Barbie. She’ll come complete with wigs, hats, scarves and other accessories, with the option of going fully bald. While many of the 152,000-plus fans that the movement has garnered will be clamoring to get their hands on one of the dolls (this writer included), Mattel said that the bald Barbies will not be sold in stores. Instead, the dolls will be donated to children’s hospitals, as well as the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. American Girl has a wigless doll out now…or you can send your child’s doll to the doll hospital and they can send her home bald.  I can imagine that could make a pretty big impression on a little girl going through a chemotherapy treatment, or a little girl with Alopecia Areata.

American Girl has announced a new line of dolls without hair as part of the My American Girl® line for girls affected by cancer, alopecia, or any medical condition causing hair loss. This new product line provides even more possibilities for a girl to create a doll that’s as unique as she is. Customers can choose from a total of five different dolls in light, medium, and dark skin tones. In addition, girls can choose their dolls’ eye color from a selection of options. Finally, because we know that not all hair loss conditions are permanent, American Girl is proud to offer one free doll head replacement should a girl’s need for a doll without hair ever change. Charitable Giving: To help provide comfort to kids who may be affected by medical conditions that cause hair loss, American Girl is including the new dolls in its annual $100,000+ donation to the Children’s Hospital Association.

American Girl also just released an option to have a (pink) hearing aid onto your doll.  I think that’s a pretty cool step for them to take.  There’s also a sweet, adorable Service Dog setthat will make your heart melt.

American Girl has a long history of creating items that speak to diversity and inclusion, and these new products are yet another way we are expanding in this important area. As part of the My American Girl® line, we are providing even more options for a girl to create a doll that’s as unique as she is. Hearing Aid This removable hearing aid is specially made to fit 18” My American Girl dolls and can be worn on either ear. Purchase includes a permanent piercing to ensure the hearing aid is expertly fitted to the doll’s ear for easy placement and removal. Service Dog Our new service dog-in-training set comes with Chocolate Chip (a soft-fur, solid-body dog), a service vest with a handle that a girl’s doll can hold, and faux treats.

Bald doesn’t have to be a stigma.  We can all be beautiful and amazing and accepted for who we are.  Hair is not defining us.  We need to  work together to embrace and accept diversity and inclusion.

Fijit Friends® Newbies

Fijit Friends® Newbies are “pocket” sized, interactive friends that are just beyond adorable.  When you squeeze their cute little bodies, they purr and giggle.  Get them near a Fijit Friend, and get them giggling and purring- you just may see your Fijit Friend® dancing right along! There are 8 of the Newbies and each has it’s own look and own personality.

I think the kids love these for the interactive features- it’s almost like a pet and a friend in one, but also because they can fit into their (larger)pockets…easy to travel with.  I don’t know if your kids are like mine but they are forever tucking small toys into pockets and bags, nooks, crannies, cupholders— and as a mom, toys that occupy for any period of time that keep kids happy AND are easy to travel with earn bonus points in my book.   The Newbies actually fit right into carseat cupholders perfectly- and with the ears and tails, they won’t get wedged in and stuck.  (These are the things that matter to me when looking at new toys!!)

We were only recently introduced to the Fijit Friends® andFijit Friends® Newbies, and they are so much fun!! I tend to forget to look into interactive toys like this when purchasing for my own kids, and I have no idea why- they always love them!

The more your child interacts and plays with their Newbies, the better the Newbie becomes at their song.  With Kira, our Newbie, when you squeeze her body, her ears bend forward as she interacts with you.   The Newbies are also great to interact with one another, AND with Fijit Friends.  What this means to me is that this toy isn’t one dimensional- it can be used in many ways.

Mattel has made packaging less frustrating with the Newbies.  Look how easy it is to remove them!

Also, and this is kind of important, the tail comes NOT attached to the Newbies.  It’s on the back “wall” behind where your Newbies is placed on the display box.  Trust me on this, you don’t want to dig through trash and recycling to find this later while your child sobs next to you.  Save yourself the trouble.  I’ve even included a photo for you!

These are not quiet toys.  They are cute, they are fun, and oh-so-very-adorable, but they are not quiet.  Unless you are able to muffle the speakers, this isn’t a toy I’d recommend sending to school on the bus, or bringing to a restaurant.  I would like them to be a tiny bit quieter, or have a volume level to adjust.

Introducing Fijit Friends® Newbies™!
Before Fijit Friends® talked or danced, they were once Newbies™ – pocket-sized singing Fijit Friends®! When you squeeze your Newbie™, her floppy ears fly forward and she begins to sing. You can pet and tickle your Fijit Friends® Newbie™ to reward her for her sweet tunes. The more you nurture her, the better she sings! Fijit Friends® Newbies™ can sing with each other in a duet, or you can collect them all for a truly singing sensation! Her skin is squishy and fun to squeeze! And, they even interact with your Fijit Friend®!

Mattel’s Disney Princess Water Toys (Giveaway)

Pool or tub, water toys are a blast for little ones (and their adults, often times.  Mattel sent us  Disney Princess Swimming Ariel – Water play is a splash away with the Disney Princess Swimming ArielTurn the seashell at Ariel’s waist and then place her into the water to see her really swim.  Watch as her tail moves up and down to swim through the water just like in The Little Mermaid.

I LOVE this little Ariel.  Of course, she’s kind of my favorite princess and so that probably helps but I just love that she really does swim.  The kids get a kick out of watching her swim- although they decided from day one that Ariel needs to live in the bathtub and not go in the pool so that’s where she lives.  The shell at her waist is pretty easy to maneuver and turn to get her wound up to swim and she does move through the water by moving her tail up and down-  which honestly delights my kids every time.  We love new tub toys and are glad to add another Ariel to our lineup (we have one that her tail lights up with fish and stuff, but she doesn’t swim, so this new doll is getting far more bubble time!!)
